"Nawaz Sharif was attacked because he chose the right path over the easy one" : Maryam Nawaz Sharif

Some offshore firms ‘halal’, others are ‘haram’: Nawaz

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif Tuesday criticized the verdict in Panama Papers case and questioned his disqualification by the Supreme Court.

“Where have you heard that a leader is disqualified because he did not receive a salary from his son?” Nawaz asked in his address to a convention of the PML-N social media workers.

Nawaz said that throughout the world people had the right to elect a government, but this was not the case in Pakistan. “Pakistan is a country where the offshore companies of some are halal and others haram,” he said.

“A ladla (dear) is excused despite admitting to his crime,” the PML-N chief said in an apparent reference to Imran Khan. “And when he [Imran] accepts the assets as his, they (court) say the assets are not yours. Till today they could not even prove Rs 10 worth of corruption against me,” he said, adding these are the circumstances which are destroying the country.

The PML-N chief said his party will witness a historic win in the next general election. “PML-N will have a historic win in the elections,” Nawaz said to those in attendance. “Our political opponents will fail in their intentions,” he said.

Pointing out the development work undertaken during his government, Nawaz said he delivered on his promises. “We eliminated terrorism over the past four years, with the grace of Almighty Allah. Cricket returned to Lahore. In 2013, I had promised to eliminate load shedding and that commitment was fulfilled,” he said.

However, the progress of Pakistan has come to a standstill ever since the Panama Papers decision, he lamented.

The former premier lamented that Pervez Musharraf broke the constitution but his case was still pending in the courts. “However, they gave the verdict against us in a matter of weeks,” he said.

“We cannot go back now. We will only go forward. The youth will take Pakistan forward. Nobody can stop you except God,” Nawaz said, adding that although Pakistan has been independent since its creation in 1947, its founder Quaid-e-Azam’s dream is yet to be realized to the full. “Your future should be better than your past and present,” he told the audience.

The former prime minister said that Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif stood by him through every thick and thin, and had helped fulfill all the promises he [Nawaz] made to the country.

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of deposed PM, also spoke at the convention and said that while Nawaz Sharif lost his post, his promises have been fulfilled. “Those who walked the right path have always faced difficulty … there is no room for any doctrine in democracy,” she said. “We have been facing courts since Musharraf’s tenure,” she added.

She said that those who were elected by voters could not be minus and that few elements could not implement their ideology on 200 million people.

Maryam said that her father faced hardships because he chose the right path instead of taking the easy way out. “Nawaz Sharif was attacked because he chose the right path over the easy one. He was attacked because he stood with his ideology, and his ideology is about respecting elected representatives,” she said.

While highlighting and extolling achievements of PML-N social media cell, Maryam claimed that the media cell had established footholds in every district of Pakistan. She said that the PM-N’s social media activists had played an effective part during the Grand Trunk Road rally and the NA-120 by-polls and urged party’s president to fully back them.

“The PML-N’s social media team has been very active and fully involved throughout the entire election process, and will continue to do so.”

lol.

Everything is stacked in his favor. PPP are being bullied in Sindh for years now with their ministers being arrested left right and center while PMLN gets away with it. From getting loans written off to corruption cases against him being put on indefinite delay to taped phone calls telling judges to jail Benazir for years to taking ISI money in 1990s to attacking SC in 1998...this guy has the gall to complain about justice system.

Sharif has been able to convince his target audience (semi literate PMLN supporters and liberals) that he is fighting against some kind of evil monster.

You only have to have some common sense and non biased head to understand Sharif is fighting for ONLY PERSONAL interests.
You just have to watch his speeches on Gilani to understand what Sharifs stands for

"Zardari sahab ko haq nahi k akailay $60 million kha jaayein"....Isko dukh tha k akilay kyun khaaya, iska hissa nahi diya :))

"Gilani ko chahyie ghar jaaye, agar clear hogaya tou wapis aa jaaye warna hamesha k liye ghar jaaye"

"Ye log Supreme court k faislay ka ehtraam nahi kartay, hum inhain courts ki tazleel nahi karnay deingay"

There are dozens of other statements he made and Gilani's case wasn't even about corruption but contempt. If Sharif can issue those statements on contempt, imagine if Gilani's non declared flats and businesses had been exposed.

Again salute to those so called custodians of democracy (liberals) who Sharif has been able to FOOL with his gibberish. Every criminal of this country who plays "establishment" card gets full support of this group.

Sharif is 3 time PM but biggest loser country has ever seen, his punch line these days is "Imran Khan cheekh cheekh k keh raha tha k main qasoor waar hon laikin judges kehtay hain nahi tumhara koi qasoor nahi". Can you imagine how any mature person who country elected 3 times can launch such vicious attacks against judiciary?? I mean he is literally saying that Imran Khan even admitted his guilt but judges refused to punish him?? Imran Khan's land/flat was never in question and many journalists (even anti PTI) admit even comparing Sharif and Imran's case is biggest injustice and lie. Hamid Mir even said that 'Those comparing Sharif and Imran's cases are dishonest and lifafa journalists'

Lmao. You copy/paste a lot of stupid stuff but this tops it off for me.

These PMLN/PPP crooks are done for. No amount of "interviews" trying to prove their innocence is going to save them now.

a sitting defence minister in england was sacked because of allegations of a leak..in Pakistan if yous end recordings/transcripts of confidential meetings of the defenders of Pakistan (and who die for their country) you are seen as a hero in the west. the west would never allow a dawn leaks as it would breach the official secrets act in the UK..thats treason.. maryam bibi is lucky she isnt spending all her days behind bars..

But I just want the cut and paste king and his fellow patwaris to answer me one question: why in 33 years of on and off rule did Nawaz sharif the mandela of pakistan fail to build a rudimentary national health service in Pakistan..even a health insurance service akin to the one in canada perhaps? or even one nearer to australia..i'd take any one of them..now dont run away patwaris..

After maryam, it will be her child, then their grandchildren, don't forget bilawal and his future children.

Looks like 2 families want to own Pakistan.

And Pakistanis support this form of democracy.

Let's say imran is selected hypothetically speaking by the establishment. Atleast it breaks the cycle of these feudal families who think Pakistan is their personal inheritance.

Why don’t you post here the stuff I copy paste ? No ?

Your Supreme Leader is also running away from not 1 but 4 defamation suits for his LIES.

We heard it first in 1979 that People’s Party is finished. As far as my memory is concerned PPP ruled Pakistan until 2013 and is in power in a Sindh atm.

In 1999 with a successful Coup we heard that Nawaz Sharif is finished. It followed with Life Sentence aswell in a joke we remember today as Tayara Hijacking Case.

Nawaz Sharif became 3rd time a Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2013. With all the Pre and Pre Poll rigging of 2018 and BBC Calling it Pakistan’s dirtiest elections ever still PML N lives on.

PPP and PML N is going nowhere. Keep Calm.

Only King’s parties collapse. Keep in mind PML Q and next in line within next 5 years will be PTI. PTI will InshaAllah have similar fate as PML Q.

Grab a book of history.

Imran & PTI’s fate will be just like PML Q ie the King’s Party.

Majority PTI politicians are ex meme era of PPP, PML N, PML Q, ANP, JUI F, MQM etc. NAB dry clean for electable and NAB files blackmailing along with mehkama e zaraat’s harassment won’t work life long.

PML Q is perfect example of what a King’s party is. And PTI is 100 % comparable with PML Q not PML N or PPP.

Do you even know father of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto ? And what his profession was ?

PTI was created in mid 90's and got zero seats yet still held on.

Why do I need to know ZAB's father? I know his son was

1) A racist
2) sat in with a military dictator and used him to get his face out there and come to power.

So yes, PMLN and PPP are King's parties. Are you saying they didn't get help from Zia and Ayub?

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided not to allow Maryam Nawaz, vice president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and daughter of former premier Nawaz Sharif, to travel abroad and rejected her application in this regard.

“The rules concerning placement of the name of persons on Exit Control List [ECL] do not allow the government to entertain her application to remove her name from the no-fly list,” said senior lawyer and aide to the prime minister Dr Babar Awan while talking to Dawn on Sunday.

Headed by Law Minister Farogh Naseem, the subcommittee of the federal cabinet that deals with ECL cases rejected her plea, as she had sought the facility for flying to London to look after her ailing father, Dr Awan said.

“In fact the subcommittee is part of the cabinet and a formal announcement to bar Maryam from travelling abroad will be made by the federal cabinet in its meeting [on Tuesday],” Mr Awan said.

PML-N says a petition has also been filed as party is aware of govt’s ‘prejudice and vengeful mindset’

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led government also hinted at challenging the court’s decision in case the leader of the main opposition party was allowed by the judiciary to travel abroad. In a talk show of a private TV channel, federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda said that the government would challenge the decision of the court if Ms Nawaz was allowed to leave the country by any court.

The PM’s aide on legal affairs while referring to the Exit from Pakistan (Control) Rules, 2010, said in terms of sub-rule (a) of the rules even if a person having valid travel document to proceed to any destination outside Pakistan, the government could stop them from leaving the country for being involved in corruption and loss to government funds.

He said Ms Nawaz would not be allowed to proceed abroad as those involved in any economic crime, embezzlement of large government funds and institutional fraud could not get permission to leave the country.

While quoting rule 2 [c] of the said ECL Rules-2010, Dr Awan said a person who had been convicted by a competent court of law for any offence should remain on such list [ECL] so long as the said order was in force and till his/her conviction attained finality.

Referring to the departure of her father Nawaz Sharif on health grounds after his conviction in a corruption case, the PM’s aide claimed: “It is unfortunate that those who went abroad on the pretext of critical health condition are not getting medical treatment there, but enjoying stay in palatial houses of which they denied their ownership and had failed to prove the money trail.”

Earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan after the Dec 18 meeting of the PTI’s core committee had also said that the government would not accept Maryam’s request.

“The prime minister and the core committee reiterated their resolve to uphold the belief that no one is above the law and there are no holy cows,” she had added.

According to her, the request by Ms Nawaz to travel abroad to meet her ailing father had been thoroughly debated in the core committee meeting. She said the core committee had observed that how a healthy and completely fit person could be allowed to leave the country just to look after her ailing father. However, she added, the government would “decide the matter based on the recommendations provided by the subcommittee”.

PML-N’s reaction

In a statement issued on Sunday, PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said the government’s decision to bar the daughter of the ex-prime minister from travelling abroad did not surprise anyone, considering that the PTI regime had always been desperately looking for opportunities to victimise and persecute the PML-N leadership.

“The decision of the sub-committee has no logical reason for keeping Maryam on the ECL,” she claimed.

The ex-minister said Ms Nawaz was granted bail on merit in both the cases against her and her sentences currently stand suspended. “Therefore, she cannot be barred from meeting her ailing father,” she added.

She said the PML-N was aware of the “prejudice and vengeful mindset” of the government that was why she had also filed a request with the court to allow her to travel abroad.

“The failed government has nothing other than political victimisation of opposition leaders on the false pretext of accountability. But the people of Pakistan have figured out this strategy of the imposed PTI regime and they will not be fooled by such petty and vengeful actions,” she added.

The federal cabinet on Tuesday decided against allowing Maryam Nawaz permission to fly abroad, maintaining the PML-N vice president's name on the exit control list (ECL), government's chief spokesperson Firdous Ashiq Awan announced.

Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Awan did not specifically talk about the decision taken by the cabinet regarding removal of Maryam's name from the no-fly list, until she was asked about the case.

Awan, the special assistant to the prime minister on information, said a total of 24 cases were brought before the cabinet through an interior ministry summary in which no "VIP's name" was highlighted. She added that out of the total 24, it was decided to add four names to the ECL, remove eight names from the list, the decision on eight cases was deferred and the request to remove one name was rejected.

"The cabinet unanimously rejected the request to remove the name from ECL of the VIP personality you are inquiring about," she told reporters, referring to Maryam.

Awan said the cabinet showed consensus on the implementation of "one law and uniform law" throughout Pakistan and endorsed the recommendation of the cabinet sub-committee on ECL, which had opposed the request to strike Maryam's name off the ECL.

Answering a question, the government spokesperson said the cabinet had decided to remove the name of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam's father and former prime minister, from the ECL after "clear instructions" were given by the high court.

"The court had recommended that the cabinet remove his (Nawaz's) name from the ECL and court orders were honoured," Awan said, adding that in Maryam's case the recommendation of the sub-committee was endorsed.

Speaking on the cabinet's 20-point agenda, Awan also shared various decisions taken regarding appointments in different government departments.

Maryam has in the past month approached the Lahore High Court twice with a request to have her name removed from the no-fly list.

Following her first request, the high court had, on December 9, disposed of the petition and directed the federal government's review committee to decide on the matter within seven days.

However, when the government did not act upon the high court order, Maryam, who is also the daughter of former premier Nawaz Sharif, lodged another petition on December 21, seeking removal from the ECL so she could travel abroad to meet her ailing father.

Taking up her petition, the court once again directed the PTI-led government to inform Maryam Nawaz on its decision regarding removal of her name from the ECL. Adjourning the hearing of the petition till December 26, the court asked Maryam to wait for the federal government's decision on the matter.

During the hearing of the second petition, the court asked how long it had been since its earlier order was issued, in response to which Maryam's lawyer, Advocate Amjad Pervez, said it had been two weeks since the directive was issued to the government but no decision had yet been taken on the matter.

Pervez added that Maryam's representative, Atta Tarrar, had also appeared before the government's review committee but still no decision was taken.

The court then asked Additional Attorney General Chaudhry Ishtiaq A. Khan, who was representing the federal government, if a decision had been taken on removing the PML-N vice president's name from the ECL.

Khan said the review committee presents its recommendation to the cabinet, which then decides on the matter.

Justice Pannu noted that though the government has yet to decide on the matter, he had read in the newspaper on Monday that the government would not allow her to go abroad.

"The government has to take a decision, and they should do so. How are they giving a statement before the decision is taken?" he asked.

On Sunday, senior lawyer and aide to the prime minister, Dr Babar Awan, had said that the subcommittee of the federal cabinet that deals with ECL cases had rejected Maryam's plea.

“The subcommittee is part of the cabinet and a formal announcement to bar Maryam from travelling abroad will be made by the federal cabinet in its meeting [on Tuesday],” Awan had said.

Drug prices reduced
Addressing the presser alongside Awan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza announced that the cabinet decided to reduce the prices of 89 essential and life-saving medicines.

The reduction of 15 per cent is in line with the government's 2018 drug pricing policy, Dr Mirza said.

He said the prime minister also issued directions to review the medicine pricing policy within two months and draft it so as to further ease the burden on the public.

According to Dr Mirza, a comprehensive national medicine policy will be announced in the coming weeks to reform the pharmaceutical sector in the country.
