After causing quite a stir in Pakistan, ambidextrous Lahore Qalandars bowler Yasir Jan spoke exclusively to Saj Sadiq.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself and your family?

A: I am 20-years-old and the youngest of seven siblings. My family is in the vegetable vending business and it would be fair to say that we have faced financial hardships in the past which has made it difficult for me to pursue my love for cricket. However, I am fortunate that my elder brother has really helped and encouraged me to fulfil my desire to play by covering for me and giving me some free time on the side as I was expected to help out in the family business.

Q: When did you discover you could bowl with both arms?

A: Like any youngster in Pakistan, I was always interested in playing cricket but this idea of bowling with either arm was something that I started for fun at the age of eight and have never looked back since. This then became an obsession for me and I have continued to develop this style without any help from anyone.

Q. But surely your coaches must have tried to stop you from bowling like this?

A: Yes, they did. My coaches were dead against it as they were worried that I might do physical damage to myself and also end up as not being good as either a left or right-arm bowler, but you know when you have an obsession about something like this, nothing will stop you and this is what happened with me.

Q. Have you bowled using both your left and right arm during proper cricket matches and within an over?

A. I have bowled in this way many times during club games but the main match where I did this was when I delivered just over five overs with my left-arm and the rest with the right-arm during a regional Under 19 game where I was representing Rawalpindi against Lahore. That was a quite an enjoyable and interesting experience.

Q. What did the batsmen think about your switching arms during the Under 19 game?

A. They were astonished and could not believe it. They complained to the umpires saying that they weren't happy with the situation and I was doing something wrong but the umpire told them that it was legal as I had informed him before bowling like that. The batsman was completely confused when the ball was delivered from the left hand after I had started the over bowling with the right hand. What also didn't help his case was that the ball was swinging as well and with the change of arm, he really didn't know how to play me.

Q: Do you think that the rules should be changed so that bowlers can swap arms without telling the batsmen, like batsmen do in switch hits?

A: Absolutely, why not? Bowlers like me have been given a talent and I would like to use that to the advantage of my team but the laws stop me from doing that. I have no problems with others learning to bowl like that but just like Kevin Pietersen can switch his hands for a switch hit, I as a bowler should also be allowed to change the bowling hand without having to announce it first as it takes away the surprise element. I would really hope that the ICC will make that change to the laws in the near future.

Q: What sort of bowling speeds are you bowling at?

A: I have been told by the Lahore Qalandars coaching staff that I am bowling at a decent pace where my speed with the right-arm is near the 140 kph mark whilst with the left-arm, I am bowling around 135 kph. This makes me very happy as I have worked very hard to get to this stage.

Q: Given your unique talent, which bowlers do you model your action on?

brett-lee_2979552.jpg

A: I am lucky that I can choose a few good bowling actions to copy as I can bowl with either the left or right-arm. From the right-armers, I would choose Brett Lee and Dale Steyn as my favourites to copy, but for left-armers, I cannot think of a better bowler to imitate than the great Wasim Akram. Having said that, I also like Mohammad Amir's and Wahab Riaz's bowling actions and imitate those also. I love their bowling actions but Wasim Akram's bowling action is a notch above all others.

Q: The video of you bowling at the Lahore Qalandars trials went viral on the internet. Does that fill you with pride?

A: To be honest, I haven't seen that video but from what I have heard from my friends and family, it seems to be a hit on the internet which is quite amazing for me. I was surprised but very proud when I heard this and I have been getting calls from acquaintances about this video all day and night. Frankly speaking it is a little irritating at times as I am forever on the phone and am not able to devote time to my family. Hopefully, the interest will die down in the next few days.

Q: What did Aaqib Javed and the other coaches say to you regarding your bowling?

aaqib-javed-pakistan-cricket_3790701.jpg

A: Aaqib has been brilliant with his advice to me. Apart from some technical pointers, his main message to me is to prepare myself for hard work in the future if I wish to achieve my goals of becoming a successful cricketer and serving Pakistan. I have been training since the Under 16 days but I will continue to learn more under the supervision of Aaqib Javed who is a very experienced bowling coach.

Q. A ten-year contract with Lahore Qalandars must be a great achievement for you. How are you feeling about this?

A: I am really pleased on being awarded this contract. It shows that Lahore Qalandars have seen something in me and will support me further. I have gone through some financial hardships in my life and to be recognized for my talent is really something special and I am grateful to Aaqib Javed and Lahore Qalandars. I can tell you that I was very skeptical about attending these trials but it was my elder brother and friends who convinced me to come forward and try them out and I have now been awarded with such a wonderful opportunity.

Q: What about the future? Do you see yourself developing to become a Pakistan cricketer?

A: Aaqib Javed has given me the opportunity to train with the Lahore Qalandars squad and I hope to accompany them in the next edition of the Pakistan Super League in 2017. This will be a great chance for me to train and possibly play alongside some of the top names of the world. I wish to continue working hard with my coaches and hope I can get a chance to fulfil my dream of representing Pakistan in the future.

Suleiman This is what I was talking about. Swing with both hands, you'll never be able to settle against a bowler like that.

Really excited to see him develop. InshaAllah he makes it big because he definitely has the physical gifts.

Yeah its interesting. But I don't know I still feel this could be like a Mendis type story.

Interested to see how he goes from here either way.

Would be awesome if he can pretend bowling with right hand and then change hands in the last moment and bowl with left.

Not sure if it is possible to do that, but it would be great if someone can actually do that in an International game.

Nope, gotta inform the umpire about which hand you're bowling with. You can change in the midst of the over though (after telling the umpires).

I know you have to inform the umpire.

When batsmen can switch hands and hit the bowler out of the park, bowlers too deserve to change hands and bowl a surprise.

There needs to be a parity somewhere. Bowlers need some life too.

My goodness, he's a seamer, just wow man, I thought he is another spinner...absolutely excited for him!

Lovely speaking to Yasir and had to chuckle to myself when listening to his answer about fame and how less time he is spending with family.

Didnt have the heart to tell him that it will get worse as he becomes more famous!

Excellent attitude from Yasir - he went against all advice to develop this skill.

AHAHAHA :))) :))) :)))

This is the best line.

Also, not sure if LQ were clever in the 10 year contract. I hope he isn't "stuck" with them forever. He doesn't know much and might have signed the contract without thinking much.

There should be a way to move and bail out, if he goes to a different franchise or something else happens.

good to see him getting employment and will not have to face poverty again.

But i hope Lahore Qalanders also educate him as a person aswell.

Glen Mcgrath once told in his interview that when he was first spotted and bought to the big city, he was first taught manners and how to interact with people properly etc, because he lacked these attributes as he lived in the town side

Hope the Qalanders also make Yasir go through such teachings with schools and all, because if they don't do this with him now, then trust me, he will be another Ahmed Shezad or Umar Akmal.... Infact, some cricketers can't even make it to international if they have too much of a cocky attitude. Abdur Rauf is a good example
He will require such teachings.

Same with Ghulam Mudassar. This seems to be the standard contract.

Given the amount of unfair advantages batsmen have. I think it is only fair that a rare talent like him are allowed to bowl with whichever hand they choose without feeling the need to inform the batsmen.

Going to schools won't make a difference except somewhat overcoming language and bit of social relation build up. Mentally solid people only mature out and you mature with time. However his work ethic can be developed by his coaching staff giving him proper aims if he carries enough ability to achieve them.

Sounds very promising. Looking forward to see him in the PSL next year. Lets hope he is not over coached.

If he can be developed further , he can be potent bowler. He can mix it up , for batsmen it can be tough.

This guy is getting popular.

Few days back I was reading an article about him in the TOI newspaper at home. Will be interesting to see his debut.

Incredible talent.

We've interviewed Aaqib Javed and he speaks about Yasir Jan in detail.

http://m.hindustantimes.com/cricket...either-hand/story-rXdLlvyfZOuzHgZhiZa1wN.html

A green-grocer’s son who can bowl at pace with either arm is causing excitement in Pakistan as he targets a spot on the national team.

Yasir Jan, 21, can generate around 145 kilometres per hour with his right arm and 135 kph with his left, making him a unique talent.

Even in a country with a history of cricket innovations, such as the reverse sweep and reverse swing, Jan has set tongues wagging.

“Yasir has been an amazing talent,” said his coach Muhammad Salman, tipping him as a definite prospect for the Pakistan Super League’s Lahore Qalandars team which has snapped him up on a 10-year-contract.

By swapping arms, a bowler can vary more greatly the angle of his delivery and adapt tactics depending on whether he is facing a right or left-handed batsman.

“It is an advantage. As a captain when you have right-handed and left-handed batsmen batting then you have a luxury to have a bowler who can bowl with both,” said Salman, a former Pakistan batsman.

“There are no restrictions that a bowler can bowl with two hands in an over.”

Jan’s talent was uncovered in a Rawalpindi U19s match, when the batting side was running away with the game and his captain turned to him and made an unusual request.

“We’re already going down. Why don’t you bowl left-handed?” Jan, now 21, recalls his captain saying. After a barren opening spell as a right-armer, he made the switch and shocked the opposition en route to his first four-for.

“The coaches were also shocked. They said, ‘What’s this kid doing?!” he recalls.

His special skill then hit the headlines during a talent hunt for the Lahore Qalandars conducted by former Pakistan fast bowler Aaqib Javed.

Poor background

Jan’s chest-on action emulates his current idol, South Africa’s Dale Steyn, but he said he was inspired by Pakistan’s former right-arm, left-arm pace attack of Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram.

“I’ve been bowling with both arms since I was a kid,” he told AFP at a training session in Lahore.

“Waqar bhai (brother) and Wasim bhai were bowling in 2003 when I saw my first World Cup.

“I really liked watching them... I’d copy them. And I kept working and working at it and I got good. And it’s helped me get picked.”

Jan is the latest in a proud line of Pakistani innovators -- from Hanif Mohammad, the original ‘Little Master’ who invented the reverse-sweep, to Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz who were the first to unveil the dark arts of ‘reverse swing’, later popularised by Wasim and Waqar before being exported globally.

His first break came in 2012 when he was picked for the Rawalpindi U16s, and in 2013 he was selected for the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where Pakistan’s top youth talent is honed.

Money is now being poured into developing and bulking up the wiry Jan, whose family moved to the capital Islamabad from the militancy-wracked northwest when he was a child.

“He came from a very poor background, we all know that. And the coaches around here, the people who own him now are going to spend a lot of money on his physical fitness and nutrition and all that,” said Salman.

“And obviously it will take time, minimum six months to a year.”

It is a challenge for Jan, but he says he will work hard to bring his right-arm, left-arm combinations to the sport’s biggest stages.

“Now I’ve got a good platform so with hard work I hope to achieve my goal of playing for Pakistan, my country. To go to the biggest grounds around the world and the best players. This is my goal and my dream.”

Great for him and his family

I think he needs time to get ready for PSL he should be ready for 3rd edition

Only 21 right now so he can keep improving for the next couple of years before seriously making an effort to get into the national team. Hope he doesn't turn himself into a gimmick bowler like Tanvir though.

Currently no Pakistan bowler except Wahab can consistently bowl above 135kph on avg,he might be useful, best wishes to him

Should have been playing for Lahore Qalandars in Australia .

Are you talking about India here?

Amir bowls above 140 constantly.

Rahat is pretty nippy too and generally hangs around the high 130s and low 140s.

any videos of this guy? sounds like yet another off the pakistani fast bowling factory line

thanks Abdullah719. any match clips?

Hope to see him at the highest level soon. Would offer so much to our team if he's a good bowler apart from his gimmick.

Shami,Umesh,Aaron,Pandya are all 140+.Ishant too mostly

Shami,Umesh,Aaron,Pandya are all 140+.Ishant too mostly

Who are you kidding bro? Ishant operates from 128-135 with the odd quick over. Pandya is 135 - 140 with the effort ball going over 140.

Umesh and Aaron are genuinely quick but Umesh usually operates in the late 130's or early 140's. Aaron has the capability of bowling in the high 140's but almost never plays.

For Shami, yeah he's not exactly slow but Fast Medium at best. Maybe because he's not fully fit yet but he isn't bowling at speeds close to what he used to.

Shami,Umesh,Aaron,Pandya are all 140+.Ishant too mostly

Shami is injured half the time. Don't know when was the last time Aaron played and Pandya is not 140+ all the time. He can get there with an effort ball, but not average speed.

Your Indian friend there was talking about average speeds.

ok guys. Don't turn this into India versus Pakistan thread.

I am a little surprised that for all the hype and praise he got from Aaqib, he hasnt featured more. Wonder what the reason is for that?

I guess it boils down to there's a huge difference in bowling a few deliveries in the nets and actually performing in a match. I think they are biding their time with him and the fear might be to not throw him in too early.

He should have got at least one game on the tour? How he would learn without playing?

Is this guy featuring in the PSL?

the way in which GEO news was talking about him,I thought he was definitely be a great attraction from LQ this season

He signed a 10-year contract with LQ, is he still in the the fold? Haven't heard anything. Saj any updates that you may have?

Nothing much, just that he is training with them and working with the likes of Aaqib Javed.

Talk about variation if he can develop in swing and out swing with both hands. He can bowl based on players weakness...
