At least 46 people - including 37 children and seven women - drowned while celebrating a Hindu religious festival in eastern India, local officials said.

The fatalities were confirmed across 15 districts in the past 24 hours.

A disaster management official said the victims died while ritually bathing in rivers and ponds swollen by recent flooding.

The three-day Jivitputrika festival celebrates children's wellbeing every year and is also marked with mothers fasting for them.

Officials in Bihar said many people ignored dangerous water levels in rivers while bathing to celebrate the festival.

There are fears that the overall death toll could rise further.

State authorities said families and relatives of the victims will receive compensation.

Deadly accidents have occurred in the past across India during major festivals when huge crowds have gathered in tight spaces with little adherence to safety measures.

In July, at least 121 people were killed in a crush at a religious gathering in the northern Uttar Pradesh state.

In 2018, nearly 60 people were killed after a train rammed into a crowd watching celebrations for Dusshera, a Hindu festival.

Such a similar incident also occured a few months ago. It's sad and definitely a result of grave mismanagement.

Sad news. RIP to the dead.
But how dumb can these people be to get drowned lime this? Boggles the mind. The chief minister announced Rs 4 lak compensation per victim.. Am guessing these folks would be ok with that- such a sad state really.

Total madness. At least the Government should not have let the people take a dip in raging waters.

RIP.

here is my question to all theists.

did god have fore knowledge of this tragedy?

Is he capable of preventing this tragedy?

RIP.

If they were atheists, they would have likely taken a more scientific approach, checking the weather, measuring water levels, and using all available tools to ensure they wouldn’t drown.

Oh Bhagwan Varuna, The God of Water, please forgive us for our sins.

Ok Shanti to all those who lost life.

But remember, mrityu hi muqti hae.

This kind of religious-driven incidents have happened in the past as well. No sure why there is no safety measures taken before such events or is that the GOV does not care about people???

People went there by their own will.
The government cannot make arrangements for everything.

So people can do whatever they want because it is their will??

It is every Govs responsibility to ensure the safety of citizen.

It is but not very practical.
No government in the world no matter how efficient can manage 1.4 billion who want to do whatever they like.

This is also a matter of faith.
Govt cannot ban it either even if deemed extremely dangerous.

So do whatever you like. Go climb mountains or get yourselves drowned. The govt can’t manage everything like that.

Not much a government can do.

They have over 1 billion people. How can you stop some wanting to jump in a river ?

This is a real tragedy but people have to take some personal responsibility too

Exactly.

The govt can’t tell people to not do this stuff otherwise people would accuse them of interfering with their faith.

It’s not easy in Bharat as you rightly pointed out 1.4 billion is a hell of a lot.
You end up doing so many things in Bharat that don’t make sense from a safety point of view but we are that kind of a nation.

Its a tragic incident no doubt, and one that could have been prevented. Your better off speaking to the relevant theologians of the relevant faiths to have your question answered. An online cricket forum is probably not the best place to seek such information. Thats all i can say. In sure you know as much.

The question sounds crude in the wake of the tragedy, but it is still a valid question that needs to be asked. Perhaps when the emotions settle down.

The tragic bit is that these events are not new or novel but common occurrence in India
