What's new

Need help choosing my next car

Maybe it's different in Canada but most of the Pakistani internationals I've met at my state school were on scholarships, in fact scholarships pretty common here in the US, I know some that go to expensive private schools like that are also on full ride scholarships, you have to write a good personal statement, being a Muslim woman also helps especially in STEM or or some social science field. Also if a lot of internationals become TAs which reduces their tuition rate to in-state.

In US it is relatively easy due to the sheer number of schools we have here.

Giannis I did get a scholarship at 1 out of 3 universities I applied to to be fair. Just didn’t choose to go to that one.

Did you miss the snow?

I went to Dubai for a week last year. I felt lost without the British rain.

Not really tbh. Only thing I’ve missed is the freedom of being alone. But overall I’ve loved this past year over here in Pak

I am not loaded at all by rich Pakistani standards. I have a Canadian permanent residency so I pay domestic fee. I probably would have gone to university in Pakistan if I didn’t pay domestic fee. This Canadian 15000 is after selling my current car for around 5000 combined with my own money that I saved up working a summer job last year in Canada. Not good to assume things. Alhamdulillah I come from a well to do family but not loaded by any means.

Plus all the rent money I saved being back in Pakistan for more than 12 months now

Yar tumney tou dukh bharri daastan khole di.

I say, dill barra karo and go for it.

Get a Corvette or Mustang GT500 Shelby ... pata tou challay k Pakistani munda Canada aya huva hai.

Loads of time to get really good cars. Next two or three years till I’m stable and in my mid 20s I plan on going with something more feasible like the ones in OP

Meanwhile Munda in Canada after his summer job couldn't keep up with the payments...

It’s not just about that. I feel guilty asking for too much from my parents given how much they’ve already spoilt me and given me anything I’ve ever needed

OP is smart he knows that buying a expensive car rn at this stage of his life isn't the best move financially

I was just having a bit of fun with the advice

cause I have seen so many of firnds make these dumb decisions and later their parents have to pay for it
People should learn about wealth creation

we in our communities just focus on increasing our incomes but we leave other options of aggressive savings on stocks, RS and it focus on shab, shaba

its a dis service really

He is buying it for cash, so I don’t see how his parents will have to pay for it later on. In fact if you can buy a car with cash in hand, you actually save money you pay on interest. Whether You and I would personally spend 15 grand on a car is irrelevant because that’s going to vary person to person. I say as long as he he finishing his education and doing well, he should have a bright future ahead of him, so rest is all trivial. Most college grads end up buying newer cars worth way over 15 grand upon graduation. So he will be fine.

In US: if you’re black, Latino, Native American and/or a woman- you’re eligible for like millions of scholarships. It’s insane.

That was the whole point I believe Colorblind G was suggesting he buy a a car on down payment (which OP said he wouldn't do and rightly so)

I have no problem with buying a car on cash and full payment my point was just about buying a 50K car as a student on down payment hats a terrible decision and is asking for trouble down the line

Especially in a covid economy

I had like a 4.0 for first 2 years couldn't get a scholarship ... (in a big state school)

Only way you can get one is if you are a good student in HS and you get it in the first semester of Uni other than that you are mostly out of luck regardless of GPA

But tbf I wasn't paying anything out of Pocket too, everything was free

But the other minority groups in similar situation got scholarships and actually got 3-4 K refunds per semesters

Some background info to start. I bought my first car in my second year in December 2017. A Ford Fusion Sport 2010. Overall really enjoyed it even though in terms of maintenance and mileage it wasn’t the best. It’s currently parked at my cousins place in Toronto.

So once I graduate and go back in a few months, I plan on selling it and buying another car. My budget is up to 15000 CAD. The three cars I’ve shortlisted are (ignore the colour. I just selected random pics) :

2013 Ford Mustang

2014 Dodge Charger

2013 Chevrolet Camaro

Provided that all 3 have decent mileage and are in simile condition, which one would you say I should opt for? Also, if you have any other suggestions for a single young guy, I’m open to those as well.

If I have to pick any one out of these three, I would go for Ford Mutang,

I never had this myself but one of my biddy when we just started residency bought this and he loved it and kept it for more than a decade.

It looks better than camry when you role up in the club
That's all that matters tbh :steyn

I guess. May be I am now a bit old so tastes has changed (would have gone for anyone when i was in uni). Price doesn't matter because at one point of time, I had a maruti 800.

If you are young, go for it.

Land/Range Rover, Bentley, Royal Royce, Aston Martin, Jaguar , Lotus and others.

If you can get me a Land Rover, Bentley, Aston Martin or a Rolls Royce under $15k USD (forgot CAD); please direct me to that dealer

My advice would be not buy and expensive car, like ever. Just get a decent one. It is for transportation and access, treat it like that.
Invest that money somewhere else, like Microsoft/Google stock etc.

The point of investing is to grow wealth and then be able to enjoy things in life.

For some it is having a fancy car.

Buy a car which comes under 10% of your savings. Not like those who spend most of their savings (some even take loans) to buy something which only depreciates with time.

Yank motors are pants.

Get a German car or an English car.

The point of an American muscle car is a big cheap engine and straight line speed. They cannot corner because there are no bends in North American. I would never get one because in UK we have bends. Though Mrs Robert and I want to rent a Mustang and blatt across the USA.

I’d say get a Jag, or Merc, or Beemer or Audi.

Just buy a car which matches your needs, style, budget and the culture where you are staying, unless you want to show off.

In Oslo where I live, some of the big American cars you posted pictures of will look really strange as no one drives them. Ford is still a very popular Brand here but they have different size.

I love BMW and not many cars ca match the driving comfort in summers but BMW (uneless you have a 4x4) can become a real nightmare in winters with it’s rare-wheel drive, if you are an inexperienced driver.

If you want reliability you can't beat the japs, if you want reliability and the extra quality and class then you can't beat the Germans. "Vorsprung der technik", (German engineering at it's best).

I’d say get a Jag, or Merc, or Beemer or Audi.

on the contrary, I think he should buy a small Hybrid or a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, and optionally use it an an Uber driver to make money and support his student life.

Gents,
Land Rover service not the same since TATA bought them

If you can get a brand new car then get a tesla model 3. Recently saw a video how the cost of ownership of a tesla is cheaper than toyota camry premium these days so it's a no brainer.
