I personally feel he is.

Why?

- Weird obsession with military culture
- Big ego/Not a team player
- Dealings with regimes like Japan/Nazis, meeting with Mussolini etc all cast a lot of doubt on his actual ambitions

Do i respect Bose?
Yes. A great intellectual, definite patriot and gave his all for the nation.

Do i feel we're better off?
Yes. I doubt Bose's version of India would have been any better.

Since, talking about What ifs, Bose recognized that 300 million Indians should be able to trump a few hundred thousand Brits, no matter how strong the later's military might may be.

India's independence was the result of negativity created to colonialism in Britain, after the English tasted the the threat of being colonized by Hitler. Moreover, after winning a war to Champion freedom everywhere from tyranny, they lost any moral logic to rule, and also financially it became hard.

Bose, was liked by the masses way more than any other Congress leader even Patel. It was his disagreement with Mahtama Gandhi that forced him to resign as president of Congress. Had Bose been allowed to take charge, I doubt we would have rise of Muslim League, and Indian victory might have happened much sooner. But the moral high ground provided by Gandhi's satyagraha movement would have been lost.

There wouldve been no Pakistan had Netaji been in command, he wouldve told Jinnah to keep dreaming.. He was too much of a dictator which is never good for any countries..

Gandhi is over rated.

Hate to disagree,
the man who inspired the democratic revolution not just in the sub continent,
whose followers helped create an apartheid free S. Africa, whose principles helped Martin Luther King in having achieve for black rights, who is venerated by Dalai Lama.

Sorry, that dude is not over rated!

It was not because of policies of gandhi that India got Independence , it was because of World War.

More than independence, Gandhi was instrumental in bringing all the Indians together against the British. That itself was a massive achievement! The country 'India' is because of Gandhi.

Exqctly , he was the main factor responsible for mobilizing the sentiments of masses and turning that into a relentless largely peaceful mass movement.

As a Punjabi Subhash Bose was great and Gandhi,Jinnah,Nehru,Patel overrated. Not sure how many Bengalis or Punjabis like Gandhi but he was the reason from Indian side for the partition.

Netaji was one of the greatest Indian patriots. In his quest to get India independent, he chose to align himself with the only other powers that were against the British at that time, namely the Nazis and the Japanese. Unfortunately for Netaji, they both turned out to be monsters.

Although one could argue that Bose's 'my enemy's enemy is my friend' tactic was rather naiive, his own patriotism towards India should never be in doubt.

Had he been alive post independence, he could have easily de-throned Nehru as the leader of the Congress, as he was more charismatic and educated than Nehru was. In fact, it is believed that Nehru had a hand in Netaji's disapperance, and Stalin helped him in this plot. Nehru was petrified about the prospect of Netaji returning to India and challenging his leadership.

Netaji was the opposition leader we were deprived of.Not sure about who killed him but why are his files still classified is kinda weird.

Gave his life for the nation. I salute this man.

However, he was obsessed with Military way of driving british away which was just impossible. You cant fight British with weapons and why would you totally believe Japan and Nazis for that. Hitler did not pay much attention to Bose.

The way he chose was not correct in the hindsight nevertheless a great patriot for that time.

Recently the govt of Bengal declassified 63 files related to Netaji. Seems like he had a second marriage too and his brother was expecting some advance money to attack Indian posts for the Japanese. I think we were spared some real embarrassment and history was kind to us otherwise we would have seen one group of Indians fighting on behalf of British at war with another group of Indians fighting on behalf of the empire of Japan. :)))

If Subash Chandra Bose had prevailed, India would have been a dictatorship ruled by Army Generals. It was good that it was Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru who charted the course of India, and Subash Chandra Bose (his patriotism aside) became a footnote in history.

Is he the same guy "Tum mujhay khoon du main tumhain azadi don ga"?

Dalai Lama is a nobody, what are his credentials?

Ghandi is overrated.

Fellow Indians, what are your views on nehru

Nehru was a realist. Among Gandhi, Jinnah, Bose etc he seemed like someone who had the most sensible and practical mind. Nehru was also the richest among them by birth. Probably why he stayed grounded and didn't let the attention and experiences make him crazier. His letters to Indira Gandhi remain a source of inspiration, so does his lovely independence day speech at midnight. Rightly revered as chacha nehru, he was a people's champion. Politics hasn't been kind to him though and he's attracted a lot of criticism from people in recent times. Unwarranted i would say, Nehru was smarter than 99 % people who hate him for various reasons.

For me the real underrated men are actually Ambedkar and Patel. Nehru seems to be hated by right wingers a lot and too many conspiracies regarding how he sold the country out etc. etc. I think he was pretty instrumental in the formative years of our Republic.

I wonder why various governments in India kept these files a secret for so long?

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he will seek to unravel one of India's most enduring mysteries surrounding the independence struggle, the latest salvo in a growing history war that could undermine the opposition Congress party.

The fate of Subhas Chandra Bose, leader of the Indian National Army which collaborated with the Japanese and Germans against the British in World War Two, has remained a riddle for seven decades.

Successive Indian governments have kept hundreds of files related to his death secret, saying the release of the information could prejudice relations with foreign nations, fuelling conspiracy theories about how he died.

Modi's decision this week to declassify all files on India's most enigmatic nationalist hero may finally end the controversy.

The findings could also embarrass India's most famous political dynasty, because of the role played by first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the aftermath of Bose's death.

Since trouncing the Nehru-Gandhi family's Congress party in a general election last year, Modi has chipped away at its grip on India's post-colonial history.

Modi's government has announced plans to change a museum set up to honour Nehru so it will reflect a wider range of leaders. His government has also erased the names of Nehru and his descendants from government schemes, places and postage stamps.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Modi met Bose's relatives to tell them the files would be declassified from January onwards to coincide with his 119th birthday.

"By ending the speculation it will allow us to assess his full contribution to the independence movement," said Sidharth Nath Singh, a leader from Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who met the Bose family.

The Indian government has officially said Bose died of burns when his aircraft crashed in Taiwan while he was on his way to Tokyo, three days after the end of World War Two.

Many Indians refuse to believe that. Some think he faked his own death to avoid capture, with reports saying he lived in the Soviet Union or in India disguised as a holy man.

A six-year inquiry headed by a Supreme Court judge found in 2006 that neither Taiwan nor the United States had any record of his plane crashing. It also found his supposed ashes in a shrine in Tokyo were those of a soldier.
Political ramifications

Singh said the release of the files could embarrass Congress if they showed that Nehru's government thought he was alive but did not want him to return to public life.

"The release of the files does have political ramifications, you can't ignore it," said Singh.

Nehru's government spied on Bose's family for two decades, suggesting it thought he may be alive, files declassified by West Bengal's government last month show.

Campaigners believe files held by the central government will provide greater clarity on his fate.

Congress veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar said the files will exonerate Nehru, and the reason they were kept secret is that they probably embarrass a foreign ally, but enough time has passed for it not to matter. "The idea that they will embarrass Nehru is pure BJP fantasy," said Aiyar.

About 200-300 files held by the prime minister's office, intelligence bureau and foreign ministry will be declassified, Singh said.

Bose campaigned against British colonial rule with Mahatma Gandhi for 20 years, but fell out with him because he believed non-violence would fail.

To millions of Indians, he was a patriot who took a heroic stance against British imperialism and who has failed to get sufficient recognition in independent India.

Bose escaped from house arrest in India in 1941 to travel to Germany, where he met Adolf Hitler and later boarded a German submarine bound for Japan.

Bose eventually arrived in Myanmar as the head of the Indian National Army, which fielded Indian troops drawn from prisoners of war taken by the Japanese.

The last known photograph of Bose shows him stepping off a plane in Vietnam, a day before his purported death.

No photograph of his body or death certificate has been published.

Chandra Kumar Bose, a relative of the leader, welcomed Modi's decision to release the files.

"We do not know for sure what happened to him, but of the many theories the plane crash theory should be debunked," he said.

Useless talk on Bose. Overhyped and useless in the context of india. only used as a political tool to bash Nehru ji, the founder of Modern India.

Seems Subhas Chandra Bose is the flavour of the day in India right now. With the Bengal elections around the corner all the political parties are trying to claim his legacy.

Netaji left congress so Congress and its off shoots should be the last ones claiming Netaji's legacy.

The Nehru family awarded each other Bharat Ratna, while Netaji was only awarded one under the PVNR govt.

The Mukherjee Commission in 2005 gave its report that Netaji didn't die in any plane crash. Congress government refused to accept the report.

Subhas Chandra Bose's Grandnephew Files Plea On Distortion Of History

Kolkata: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's grandnephew, Chandra Kumar Bose, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in Calcutta High Court demanding the "action of Government of India towards current unfettered distortions and misinformation in the literature and film of the Indian freedom movement."

Speaking to ANI, Mr Bose said, "Modi government declassified secret documents in 2016-17. After this, we found reports which established that Netaji Bose sacrificed his life on August 18, 1945. But certain people are trying to make business by distorting history stating that he survived an air crash."

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at the Calcutta High Court on Friday, seeking urgent remedial action by the Central government towards "current, unfettered distortions and misinformation in literature and film of the history of the Indian freedom movement".

The plea also calls for more careful verification of the historical authenticity and veracity of events depicted in films, books and other publications, stated a press release on Friday.

The petitioners expressed concern over the "adverse treatment meted out to the iconic leader Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose", who, they said, is not a character out of mythology or fiction that his life and legacy would be open to the imagination and fantasy of a story-teller and rumour-monger.

"Netaji lived and served the country in one of the most turbulent times in the history of the sub-continent. His contributions to and actions during the freedom struggle have had a paramount and positive influence in building a free India," the petitioners said, as per the release.

The petitioners also called on the Central government to constitute a team of "eminent representatives (including relatives)" to bring back Netaji's remains from their current resting place -- the Renkoji Temple in the Japanese capital Tokyo.

The spokesperson for the petitioners and Netaji's grandnephew, Chandra Kumar Bose, said it was time for the Central government to put an end to fantasies and conspiracy theories surrounding the life and death of Bose, beginning with a re-affirmation of his demise in an air crash in Taiwan in August 1945, the release stated.

Netaji Relatives Claim "Distortion" Of History In Films, Move Court

Kolkata: Claiming that lives and achievements of national heroes, especially Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, were being distorted in films and various forms of media, a PIL has been filed before the Calcutta High Court seeking direction to the Centre to take steps to stop such activities.

Claiming that the Government of India has already conducted different inquiry commissions on Netaji and reports of these have been published and admitted in the Parliament, the petitioners alleged private profiteering by spreading various unverified theories through films and mass media.

Petitioners Saumya Shankar Bose and Chandra Kumar Bose, both from Netaji's family, said they seek the prevention of distortion of the history of the Indian freedom movement through any kind of misinformation, specifically through films and mass media.

Their lawyer, Sattwik Majumder, said on Sunday that the PIL is likely to be listed for hearing next week.

Claiming that they want the preservation of the correct narrative of Indian history and the prevention of its distortion, the petitioners said the history of the Indian freedom movement and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose must be told without any imaginative prose or conspiracy theories.

They stated that theories like Netaji living in disguise and hidden in a free and independent India were rejected by all the commissions.

Justice Sahai Commission, set up by the Uttar Pradesh government, had also rejected the notion that 'Gumnami Baba' was Netaji Bose, the petitioners stated.

They claimed that Netaji is not a character out of mythology or fiction that his life and legacy would be open to the imagination and fantasy of rumour mongers and storytellers.

They pleaded that events depicted in films, books, and other media be verified before they are brought to the public domain in future.
