Southee to lead as New Zealand name new-look Test squad for Pakistan

New Zealand Test squad for Pakistan: Tim Southee (c), Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell (wk), Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Neil Wagner, Kane Williamson, Will Young.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Canterbury leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has been recalled to the BLACKCAPS Test squad for the upcoming tour to Pakistan, four years on from his last international outing in whites.

The 30-year-old Sodhi’s been included alongside one-time Test player Glenn Phillips and the uncapped Blair Tickner, as part of a 15-player squad for the two Test series, which starts in Karachi on December 26 and concludes in Multan from January 3.

The tour will be Tim Southee’s first as Test captain after Kane Williamson earlier announced he was stepping down as skipper in the longest format.

Sodhi’s played 125 white-ball games for the BLACKCAPS and been a mainstay in the T20 side - recently becoming just the fifth male player in the world to claim 100 T20I wickets

Despite not being able to play a lot of red-ball cricket of late, Sodhi has a strong first-class record featuring 279 wickets at an average of 33, with 16 five-wicket bags and two ten-wicket hauls.

Phillips played his only Test against Australia at the SCG in January 2020, scoring a half-century in the first innings.

Like Sodhi, the 26-year-old Phillips has made his name in the T20I format, racking up 56 international caps and a current ICC T20I batting ranking of seven.

Tickner featured in the BLACKCAPS Test squads for the series against South Africa at the end of the home-summer and away to England in the winter, but is yet to debut, after playing 20 white-ball internationals.

Coach Gary Stead congratulated the trio on their inclusion in the squad.

“It’s always an exciting time for a player to be selected in a Test squad and even more so when you’ve been away for an extended period of time.” Stead said.

“I know all three of the guys have a real passion for the longest form of the game and are looking forward to getting into their red-ball work at the pre-tour camp in Lincoln this week.”

Stead acknowledged that Sodhi had not been able to play a lot of red-ball cricketrecently due to the demands of the international white-ball schedule, but said he had the faith of the selectors.

“Ish has been playing international cricket for almost a decade now and we’re backing his skills and experience.

“Looking at the current conditions and style of play in the Pakistan and England Test series, we feel having a wrist-spinner in the team will be important.”

Stead was full of praise for Phillips who he said had taken his white-ball game to new heights in the past two seasons.

“Glenn is clearly a very talented batsman and we’re excited to introduce him back into the Test squad for this tour.

“His ability to bowl off-spin is also a plus point with the prospect of turning pitches.”

Stead said Tickner’s inclusion reflected his place amongst the Test bowling stocks in the country.

“Blair’s been with the group for our past two Test series and we believe he’s very much ready for Test cricket.

“He has genuine pace and gets good bounce which is a real asset to have in sub-continental conditions.”

Trent Boult made himself unavailable for the tour, while Kyle Jamieson remains unavailable for selection as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

Stead said the squad was looking forward to the prospect of playing Test cricket in Pakistan for the first time since 2003.

“It’s going to be a new experience and the kind of challenge that excites this group.

“We’ve naturally been keeping an eye on the current Test series against England, particularly the last two Tests of the series held in Multan and Karachi, where we will play.

“This series will be the first for Tim Southee as Test captain and together we’re both looking forward to getting into our work for the tour.”

The BLACKCAPS one-day squads for Pakistan and India will be named on Monday December 19.

Great... The first test against NZ starts just five days after the final test against England concludes. I was hoping after the debacle of the England test series that Pakistan don't play for some time again. I guess the only positive is that neither of the two tests against NZ take place in Rawalpindi.

Shame it should have been a proper 3 match series, with the last one as D/N in Rawalpindi,

Hopefully players like Kamran Ghullam,Hurraira and Mubasir get into the test squad and hopefully they drop Agha,Azhar and Zahid.

Shipley earns maiden BLACKCAPS call-up | Ronchi to lead India tour

Canterbury’s in-form all-rounder Henry Shipley is poised to make his BLACKCAPS debut after being selected in the ODI squads for back-to-back three-match series in Pakistan and India, in January.

The BLACKCAPS have named split ODI squads for each series, as player and staff workloads continue to be managed.

Captains Kane Williamson (white-ball) and Tim Southee (Test), along with coaches Gary Stead and Shane Jurgensen, will return home after the Pakistan ODIs in Karachi (January 10, 12, 14), to begin preparations for the England home Test series in mid-February.

Luke Ronchi will take over as head-coach for the three-game ODI (January 18, 21, 24) and T20I (January 27, 29, February 1) series in India, and will be assisted by NZC network coaches Bob Carter and Paul Wiseman.

Tom Latham will captain the ODI series against India, with Auckland Aces left-hander Mark Chapman and Otago Volts pace-bowler Jacob Duffy earning recalls to replace Williamson and Southee for the series.

Batsman Henry Nicholls (58 ODIs) and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi (37 ODIs) have been recalled for both series.

The squad for the T20I series against India will be named in the week of January 9, after the opening rounds of the Dream11 Super Smash.

The 26-year-old, Shipley, hails from Greendale in Canterbury Country and has been a stand-out player on the domestic scene for the past few seasons, delivering a number of match-winning performances across the formats, impressing the selectors with his all-round skills.

A tall (1.96m) right-arm pace bowler and middle order power batsman, Shipley was the leading wicket-taker in last season’s Dream11 Super Smash and is currently joint-second on the Ford Trophy wicket-taking table after claiming a hat-trick against the Wellington Firebirds in November.

BLACKCAPS selector Gavin Larsen said Shipley had been picked on form.

“Henry’s an exciting talent who we’ve had our eye on for a while,” Larsen said.

“He’s taken his game to another level in the past 12 months, and we’re delighted to see his progression given how valuable genuine all-rounders are in any cricket team.”

“It’s encouraging to see players putting their hands up in our domestic competitions and their performances being rewarded with selection for the national team,” he said.

Kyle Jamieson was unavailable for selection as he continues his recovery from a back injury.

Larsen said it was a balanced ODI squad with a mix of experienced players, along with a nod to the future.

“We’re lucky to have a strong group of proven-performers in one-day cricket and it’s exciting to see new blood emerging in the form of Henry Shipley.

“The tour will also present further opportunities for the likes of Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips, and Mark Chapman, who are hugely talented but still relatively inexperienced at international ODI level.

“It’s also great to welcome back the familiar faces of Henry Nicholls and Jacob Duffy, who were with the ODI team in Europe in the winter and have been in good form domestically.”

Larsen said the back-to-back ODI series would provide vital preparation ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup in India next October-November.

“This is a great opportunity to take on two quality white-ball sides in sub-continental conditions,” he said.

“It’s going to be tough cricket against world-class opposition which should prove a real test of a player’s skill and temperament.

“With the one-day World Cup less than a year away in India, it’s the perfect time to be playing these sides at home as we look to nail down our game-plans, and understand the different situations and conditions we may encounter.”

The ODI players will depart for Pakistan on January 4.

The BLACKCAPS Test tour party will depart Auckland on Wednesday December 21.

Blackcaps confident in security arrangements for return to Pakistan after 2021's cancelled tour

The Blackcaps are holding no fears or anxieties about their return to Pakistan, after their 2021 tour was cancelled due to a security threat.

Last September, the Blackcaps' tour of Pakistan was called off at the last minute, as the New Zealand Government was made aware of a "credible security threat" made against the team.

The team were hastily evacuated and returned to New Zealand via Dubai despite an outcry from Pakistan over the nature of their exit.

However, more than a year on, Pakistan has successfully hosted both Australia and England in 2022, with no security issues for either side.

And with the examples of other countries to follow, the Blackcaps are completely confident that they too can experience an undisturbed tour at the second time of asking.

Due to the nature of the 2021 tour clashing with preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup in the UAE, most of the current Blackcaps didn't travel to Pakistan last year.

But for Tom Blundell, who was on the cancelled tour, any fears over a repeat have been allayed.

"You've got to trust the higher-ups and our security detail," said Blundell. "Obviously England's been there for the last month or so. I'm pretty happy going there.

"We've got all the details from our security saying it's all good. England's there at the moment, and nothing's happened.

"We're pretty confident in what lies ahead for us."

The Blackcaps depart for Pakistan on Wednesday, where they'll play two tests and three one day internationals, before returning again in April for five Twenty20 Internationals and five more ODIs.

Meanwhile, for the players who didn't travel last year, the chance to play in new conditions is something to take in, with no New Zealand side having played a game in Pakistan since 2003.

"I'm very excited to go to Pakistan," added Devon Conway. "As a young kid, you always dream to play all around the world.

"This is a great opportunity for us to go there, play, and experience different conditions.

"I'm certainly looking forward to it."

Two days gaps between Test matches looks like Kiwis in a hurry to finish the tour, what if God forbid an untoward incident happens in some other city , Black caps might threw the kitchen sink and jet back to Auckland

Adam Milne has been withdrawn from the BLACKCAPS white-ball squads for the upcoming series in Pakistan and India due to concerns about his preparation.

The right-arm pace bowler finished the recent home series against India with a tight hamstring and subsequently had his return delayed for the Wellington Firebirds, missing two Ford Trophy matches in December.

Despite playing the first two games of the Dream11 Super Smash season for the Firebirds, the prospect of six ODIs in 16 days across Pakistan (January 9, 11, 13) and India (January 18, 21, 24) was considered too big of a risk.

A decision was therefore made, by mutual agreement, to replace Milne with Central Stags pace bowler Blair Tickner, who is already over in Pakistan with the Test team.

BLACKCAPS selector Gavin Larsen said the decision wasn’t an easy one.

“Adam was very up front with us about his concerns around the lack of one-day bowling loading for the upcoming tours,” Larsen said.

“After chatting to him, we agreed his preparation leading into the tour wouldn’t be sufficient for him to cope with the demands of back-to-back, three-game ODI series.

“We appreciate his honesty and his genuine desire not to let the team down.”

Milne will continue to play for the Wellington Firebirds when available for the remainder of the home summer.

Larsen said Tickner, who has six ODIs to his name, was a ready-made replacement.

“Blair’s skills at bowling through the middle and his ability to hit the pitch hard make him a similar prospect to what Adam offered us.

“The fact he’s already in Pakistan experiencing the conditions is an added bonus.”

The BLACKCAPS ODI players depart New Zealand for Pakistan on January 4.

Pace-bowling all-rounder Doug Bracewell has been called up to replace the injured Matt Henry in the BLACKCAPS ODI squads for Pakistan and India.

Henry was ruled out of the tour with an abdominal strain sustained on the final day of the second Test in Karachi, with the injury requiring two to four weeks of rest and rehabilitation.

Bracewell, who has 68 international caps to his name, most recently featured in the BLACKCAPS home ODI series against Netherlands last April.

The 32-year-old has been in good form with bat and ball on the domestic scene for the Central Stags, starting the season as one of the leading wicket takers in the Plunket Shield and more recently showing his ability with the bat, making key contributions for the Stags in the Dream11 Super Smash.

Coach Gary Stead confirmed Bracewell would arrive in Karachi on Wednesday local time.

Stead said Bracewell was a natural replacement for Henry in the ODI squad.

“Doug is a quality bowler with a lot of experience and we feel his skills best compliment the bowling mix we already have in the squads for Pakistan and India.”

“He has experience across all three formats at international level, has experience in the subcontinent, and has already shown his range of skills this season.”

Stead expressed sympathy for Henry, who picked up the injury on the final day of a hard fought Test in Karachi.

“Matt has been one of the leaders of our ODI attack for a number of years and I know he’s disappointed to be missing out because of injury.”

“With important home series coming up, it’s vital he has time to recover properly over the coming weeks.”

Otago Volts bowler Jacob Duffy will replace Tim Southee in the ODI Squad in India but was unavailable to travel any earlier as a replacement for Henry, as he is recovering from COVID.

Auckland Aces bowler Kyle Jamieson (back) and Wellington Firebirds bowlers Adam Milne (side) and Ben Sears (back) were also unavailable for selection as they continue to recover from or manage injuries.

The ODI Series against Pakistan starts in Karachi on Monday January 9 while the ODI Series against India starts on Wednesday January 18 in Hyderabad.

Chief Executive of New Zealand Cricket (NZC) David White speaking to the PCB

“It [New Zealand’s tour of Pakistan] is being great and we’ve been very well looked after, and the security has been fantastic, and the cricket has been amazing as well, so we are having a great time."

“They [New Zealand players] are enjoying the hospitality, the quality of cricket and they are having a great time and feeling very safe and secure."

“We have the same security provided as England which is excellent. So, we had a lot of contact with England and Australia and of course, other teams had toured here so we came with a lot of confidence and we’re enjoying the tour"

“We’ve always had a very close working relationship with Pakistan. I think we became full members of the ICC at the same time. The teams get on really well and compete hard on the field and of course, we’ve had some great pictures of the years so, we couldn’t be happier."

Najam Sethi on Saturday said that there will be a "slight change" in the schedule for the home New Zealand T20I and ODI series.

"There will be a slight change in the schedule due to general elections in Punjab," Sethi said during a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium today.

New Zealand are scheduled to play five T20Is and as many ODIs in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi from April 13 to May 7.

But, there will be a slight change in the schedule due to general elections in Punjab on April 30.

"New Zealand series will take place on its time," Sethi said, adding that the series was set to start in Karachi while moving to Lahore and Rawalpindi later on.

He revealed that there will be some changes to this now. "We will announce the details next week," he said.

Revised itinerary of New Zealand’s white-ball tour of Pakistan

Lahore, 20 March 2023:

The Pakistan Cricket Board and New Zealand Cricket have unanimously agreed to make tweaks to the New Zealand men’s cricket team’s tour of Pakistan for five ODIs and five T20Is.

The side will now arrive in Lahore and will play three T20Is from 14-17 April, before traveling to Rawalpindi where the final two T20Is and first ODI will be played from 20-26 April. The tour will culminate in Karachi with the remaining four ODIs to be played from 30 April to 7 May.

This is an additional tour by the New Zealand cricket team and the matches will count towards ICC Team Rankings. The ODIs will help Pakistan to prepare their side for the ACC Asia Cup and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, while the T20I will assist the PCB to continue with their rebuilding of the side for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the USA and West Indies in June/July 2024.

Revised Pakistan v New Zealand schedule:

14 Apr - 1st T20I, Lahore
15 Apr – 2nd T20I, Lahore
17 Apr – 3rd T20I, Lahore
20 Apr – 4th T20I, Rawalpindi
24 Apr – 5th T20I, Rawalpindi
26 Apr – 1st ODI, Rawalpindi
30 Apr – 2nd ODI, Karachi
3 May – 3rd ODI, Karachi
5 May – 4th ODI, Karachi
7 May – 5th ODI, Karachi

May want to move this series to uae

If elections are going on considering what happened last week , the country can't be deemed safe with the political chaos going on .
One attack and it will be a nail in the coffin for pakistan cricket of hosting foreign teams.

Should scrap the T20s as they are a bit pointless now. World cup not for another 14/15 months. ODI prep is much more important.

IPL's 16th edition will start on March 31 in Ahmedabad. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) had confirmed to release its players for IPL season 16.

Kane Williamson (Gujarat Titans), Tim Southee (Kolkata Knight Riders), Devon Conway, and Mitchell Santner (both Chennai Super Kings) have been given permission to leave the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka and join their teams prior to the start of latest IPL edition.

Finn Allen (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Lockie Ferguson (KKR) and Glenn Phillips (Sunrisers Hyderabad) will join their teams after playing first ODI against Sri Lanka which is scheduled on March 25.

The other New Zealand players who will play in IPL season 16 are Kyle Jamieson (CSK) and Trent Boult (Rajasthan Royals).

As a result, top New Zealand players will miss the Pakistan tour due to their IPL commitments.

PCB needs to stop treating Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi as the trinity of venues in Pakistan. The security of cities like Faisalabad and Multan is similar if not better than the other cities. They should start hosting international cricket there in favor of other venues too.

It is understandable for Peshawar because some areas of KPK and Balochistan remain high alert areas.

Good time for Pakistan to improve their ODI ranking but PCB need to ensure the pitches in Karachi are good, not the low scoring ones last series.

PCB should really reevaluate how many games they give to Karachi as last time Karachi had all Test matches and ODIs played there and the crowd was embarrassing. Even now, they have given the most games to Karachi. It seems the Karachi lobby has a lot of sway as no way is PCB making a profit in Karachi with those numbers.

Not sure that Karachi deserve to host the most games after the low turnout in PSL 8.

With 50 overs WC looming, Pakistan should take this series as a stepping stone to iron out the issues in 50 over cricket,

Tom Latham will return to international T20 action for the first time since 2021 to lead the BLACKCAPS T20 sides against Sri Lanka (home) and Pakistan (away).

Latham will captain both squads which feature potential T20 debutants in Canterbury Kings duo Chad Bowes and Henry Shipley, along with several players returning to international T20 cricket on the back of strong international and domestic form.

The squads for Sri Lanka and Pakistan will be split, with 13 players named for the three-game KFC T20 Series against Sri Lanka which starts at Eden Park on Sunday April 2, before a 15-strong squad departs to Pakistan on April 9.

Cole McConchie, Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert have all been selected in a T20 squad for the first time since 2021.

Seifert features in the squad for the home series against Sri Lanka but won’t travel to Pakistan as he and his wife await the birth of their first child.

Dane Cleaver, Cole McConchie and Blair Tickner are the new players to be added to the group when the squad moves to Pakistan.

While Shipley was included in the BLACKCAPS T20 squad on this year’s tour to India, Bowes has been selected for the first time in the format fresh off his ODI debut at Eden Park on Saturday.

BLACKCAPS coach Stead said Latham’s return to T20 cricket reflected his ability to adapt his game and his leadership.

“We saw against India earlier this season the power and range of shots that Tom possess. His adaptability also means he can feature in a range of batting positions.

“He led an inexperienced T20 squad to Bangladesh in 2021 and we were really impressed with his leadership of that group during a COVID bubble tour.”

Stead said the two series presented opportunities for a number of players.

“We’ve got players returning and guys potentially making their debuts, that’s a really exciting mix to have in the group for these matches.

“Players like Tim and Cole haven’t been around the squad for little while and I am sure they will bring good energy when they are involved. They have both earned their selection with strong domestic form this season.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) could change the schedule for the upcoming limited-overs series against New Zealand once again.

According to sources, Karachi, which is the venue for the last four ODI matches of the series, could be stripped of hosting one fixture with Rawalpindi in line to host an additional match.

Because we are not in a position to dictate the FTP and hence where there is a gap we get accommodated, besides a second string NZ XI serves no purpose to be a meaningful series

I agree.

Muslim states shouldn't try to arrange cricket during Ramadan. If they really have to, it should happen after Maghrib (late night T20).

Time passes quickly when you keep yourself busy. Will be helpful for the players during their Rozas

Is there honestly any point of playing Babar and Rizwan against this side? What are we to gain from there 100-0 in 14 overs against this lot?

We should play the same side that we had against Afghanistan against this lot. However for ODI's, we have no choice but to play our main players because we need the match practice.

There is more cricket in Ramadan as compared to any other month in the Islamic Republic. Cricket is on every damn street & ground during Ramadan.

That is recreational

This is asking ground staff, other non playing staff and playing staff to stop fasting or not go for prayers etc

Also these games during the last 10 days of Ramadan which has Lailat-ul-Qadar also.

Some sensible approach is needed

No one stops anyone from praying or fasting. Cricket itself is ibadat for the players. After all, they are serving the Islamic Republic's economics, image, society etc. Islam has given the mujahids relaxation on fasting in the form of fidya & kaffara.

Not sure if what you are stating is some religious opinion as I have not come across any such ruling.

If it's an ICC tournament, I can understand that.

But when these things are in our control - especially home series then one has to question.

Bilateral series schedule is not entirely in our control. Visiting team is also required to be agreed on schedule. Anyways...if they start match at 7:30PM then I believe there shouldn't be any issue.

Tom Latham will lead a BLACKCAPS ODI Squad in Pakistan later this month featuring two potential debutants in Ben Lister and Cole McConchie.

The regular Canterbury skipper is also part of the T20 Squad to tour Pakistan and has won selection on the back of a strong season across all formats in domestic cricket.

McConchie’s 1140 runs across formats are the second most of any player this season while he’s also picked up eight wickets.

Lister featured in the ODI Squad to face Sri Lanka during the recently completed ANZ ODI Series but didn’t take the field and has the chance to add to his international T20 debut against India earlier this year.

The 15-man squad also features further opportunities for recent ODI debutants Chad Bowes, Rachin Ravindra and Henry Shipley.

Those new faces are balanced by an experienced core including six members of the squad that made the final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Nine players from the squad also have recent experience in Pakistan, featuring in either the Test or ODI Squads that played in Karachi earlier this year.

The traveling squads will also have the benefit of extra experience in Pakistani conditions with Saqlain Mushtaq joining the group as an assistant coach.

Gary Stead said the prospect of taking on Pakistan across both white ball formats was an exciting one.

“We’ve enjoyed a number of exciting matches against Pakistan across both white ball formats in the last season home and way. They are a tough team no matter where you take them on.

“The successful ODI Series earlier this year in Pakistan provided big learning opportunities for the players and having more ODI match experience is fantastic in a World Cup year.

“Having someone with Saqlain’s experience is a big boost for the group and we are looking forward to the insights he can offer us to aid our preparations for local conditions, and in particular the assistance he can provide to our spin bowling group.”

Stead said McConchie’s consistency this season had been impressive.

“Cole has been a leader for Canterbury and at New Zealand A level for a number of seasons but his contributions to winning games across formats really stood out this summer.

“His skill set with bat and ball is a valuable one, especially in the conditions we are likely to face on this tour.”

Stead said that Lister, who plays for the Aces, has impressed the coaching group with his desire to learn since joining the BLACKCAPS environment.

“Making your debut in India is a big challenge and it’s been great to see Ben really try and soak up every opportunity since then.”

ODI squad missing a few big names.

But that's the IPL for you - players won't give up that sort of money.

Main squad already beat Pakistan in Pakistan under Babar’s captaincy

Cricket is a form of employment for many people, there is no ruling that says it is prohibited for a Muslims to work during the month of Ramadan. If students are taking exams, offices and businesses are open with all employees working then cricketers can also work during the month of Ramadan.

It is upto the individual to make sure his religious duties are met.

Pak was also without Shaheen, Shadab (Throughout) while Naseem and Imam missed final ODI. Phillips played a blinder otherwise even without quite a few regulars Pak could have won the series decider.

That being said, hoping Babar with recent PSL leadership experience (was his 2nd) can apply better tactics at international level when partnership of the opposition gets going.

Look I am not a scholar but I have a basic understanding.

Huge difference.

Sports is a physical activity.

The Islamic state is supposed to encourage people to partake in more religious duties during the month.

All that aside, most institutions in Pakistan have reduced Ramazan hours for just this reason, why not for cricketers?

I see your little trick!

If Pakistan bat first in most games I see no reason why Babar can’t rack up ODI centuries against this attack

There is no Doug Bracewell to trouble him this time round

Once again, how is this being allowed in Ramadan? Games will finish 1-2 am, people need to do Sehri after that - I will be amazed if anyone stays to the end of these games.

Could have added multan to the venues.4 matches in last 10 days of ramadan and 3 in last 5 taaq raats included. Not sure that the timetable is appropriate.

Exactly my point, PCB really need to think about this Ramadan thing.

Its a difficult one, with Ramazan a month long and tight schedules to fit into the cricketing calendar, its a delicate balancing act.

Pakistan seems to have a general disregard for Ramadan. The way Ramadan dramas are made and promoted specifically for ppl to watch after opening there fast is beyond belief .

I remember this Naqvi guy who had the most unusual batting stance. He was a cross between Amir Sohail and Graham Gooch.
