ICC T20 World Cup 2022 | New Zealand v Sri Lanka | Group 1 | SCG | 29 October | Match Discussion

What an amazing innings that by Glenn Phillips! One of the best centuries in the history of the T20 World Cup tournament. A brilliant innings when no one else is able to even time the ball. Take a bow!

usually, they're pretty safe and good fielders, but Sri Lanka's fielding has been pretty below average this tournament. They must be kicking themselves for having dropped Philips twice. Things would've looked completely different at this stage had they held onto those two chances. Very poor from them. They wasted a really good start and now find themselves chasing a competitive score on this pitch.

Special knock by Phillips.

I saw him at the SCG last week.

You can't underestimate how quick he is between wickets. It's insane to see in person, he runs faster than fast people with pads on. Incredible strength to boot, to muscle balls away with such a small back swing is ridiculous.

He's an athletic freak.

I thought he was out a few times but he cleared the boundary by a good few meters.

It's absurd how he puts balls into the stands with his short bat swing the position he gets himself at times.

New Zealand 15/3 after 4 overs
Then 45/3 from 9 overs
Yet they finish on 167/7

Superb that.

Had Nissanka not dropped Philips, SL would've won and comfortably so. What followed was a monster innings on a tough pitch. NZ heavy favourites now.

This pitch is far from easy to start on.

SL will need to spend time at the crease and get in before trying to play their shots.

Phillips is the only one who looked comfortable on this pitch, and he only found the ropes consistently after spending time at the crease and through his freakish strength.

Do SL still have the batsmen to chase this or not much to come after this?

Poor cricket from Lanka. It’s 168 not 220. Play proper, take few singles, wait for a bad ball. NZ opening bowlers bowl well with new ball. Lanka batting like a sunday league team!

Take calculative risks. Fairly attack. You know what Southie and Bolt will do early on with the new ball. See few overs out safely. 30-1 first 6 wouldn’t been bad. Lanka on the overdrive, wild cricket.

The bounce of this pitch is all over the place.

Some taking off like a tennis ball, others staying low.

Nah, this pitch has troubled a lot of batsmen and thrown their timing off.

Rajapaksa isn’t finding difficult to hit the ball. It was good bowling from NZ and poor batting by SL top 4. Nissanka was a wild swing, other two of the top 3 nothing shots. Pitch isn’t the best but bad cricket from Lanka too.

I like this player Banuka Rajapaksa style a lot, really enjoyed his batting at the Asia Cup. I wish Soumya Sarkar turned into a T20 batsman like him!

Chamika is that over hyped guy who does cheerleading from the bench and did the nargin dance too asia cup. Should have took single gave the left handed batter the strike against left arm spinner.

Yes. He is good.

He played a shot today that reminded me of Sanath Jayasuriya.

Asian sides struggling in this WC , even the weaker non Asian sides are troubling the Asian sides.

Sa are favs in Perth tomorrow against India 😐

South Africa have the best team in this tournament. I think they have the best bowling attack.

Disappointed with SL. Asia Cup winners, should have done better. After the washout games. Was hoping for a decent game of cricket today!

Best T20 innings in history by Phillips imo. Incredible recovery from 15/3.

If NZ beat Ireland maybe there is a case to play 2nd xi/open bowling with kane williamson vs England and knock the criminals out of their own home tournament

Glenn Phillips scored a magnificent century while Trent Boult scalped four wickets as New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 65 runs in their Group 1 encounter at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The victory in Group 1 sees New Zealand sit at the top of the table in Group 1 with 5 points in three games. The victory also sees them edge one step closer to sealing a place in the semi-finals. Sri Lanka meanwhile stay on two points from three matches. The victory was also New Zealand's biggest against Sri Lanka in terms of runs in T20Is.

Chasing 168, Sri Lanka's innings never got going as they failed to counter the clever bowling from Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Southee scalped one wicket in the first over, with Boult scalping two in the second as Sri Lanka were reduced to 6/3. Boult would have his third in his fourth over, sending Charith Asalanka packing as Sri Lanka were reeling at 8/4.

After the early blows, Sri Lanka never quite recovered, despite the best efforts of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. The batter scored 34 off 22 before being dismissed by Lockie Ferguson. Mitchell Santner would also strike twice, getting the wickets of Chamika Karunaratne and Maheesh Thekshana, as Sri Lanka were limping around at 65/8.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka's spirited effort of 35 for 32 would also come to an end as Boult ended his knock to scalp his fourth of the match. The pacer would end his spell with figures of 4/13. Ish Sodhi would scalp the final wicket of Lahiru Kumara in the final over as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 102.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand were in trouble in the Powerplay, losing 3 quick wickets. Finn Allen, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson all departed early, leaving New Zealand on 15/3.

A partnership of 84 was then built up between Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell, getting New Zealand out of trouble. The pair would bat sensibly, knocking the ball around, punishing the odd bad ball away. They were also helped in their effort by Sri Lanka's fielding, as they put down two catches. Mitchell would finally be dismissed by Wanindu Hasaranga with a brilliant wrong 'un, bringing an end to the partnership.

After steadying the ship alongside Mitchell, Phillips then upped the ante, smashing some brilliant shots and slowly getting his strike rate up. The batter would enter another gear after his fifty, taking the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. He would finally bring up his second T20I hundred in the 19th over. Phillips would be dismissed in the final over by Lahiru Kumara but not before scoring a breathtaking 104 off only 64 balls. Phillips hit ten fours and four massive sixes in his brilliant knock.

Mitchell Santner (11*) also made a handy contribution as New Zealand set Sri Lanka a target of 168. Kasun Rajitha (2/23) was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka.

As ever, SL can just play in subcon. They are not good enough elsewhere.

LOL, they aren’t.

Indian batsmen are head and shoulders above their Pak and SL counterparts, because they are the strongest Asian side vs pace and bounce.

They choked badly save for Kohli Vs Pakistan. But they will be high on confidence after facing SA back home.

Bavuma is a walking wicket and QdK can be hit or miss depending on his mental state. Miller and Russow are the only threats.

I’m tapping into my ancestral roots based in Delhi and Jaipur and will be supporting India today, with no agenda for semis qualification for my own team.

What a complete hammering this was.

Too easy for NZ. Very professional performance.

Awful from SL.

His leadership and captaincy elevates his stature. But purely as batsman, he is not in the league of Smith, Kohli and Root in my opinion.Even Babar has higher ceiling to him as pure batsman.

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka believes his side is still capable of clinching an unlikely semi-final berth at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

The Asia Cup champions slumped to a disappointing 65-run loss to New Zealand at the SCG on Saturday and now face an uphill battle to finish in the top two places in Group 1 and progress through to the knockout stages of the event.

Sri Lanka currently sit in fifth place on the standings with just one victory from three games and will need to register emphatic wins from their remaining matches against Afghanistan and England this week to have any chance of qualifying for the semis.

But Shanaka is not giving up hope yet and thinks Sri Lanka can still qualify if they can play their best cricket during the remainder of the Super 12 stages.

"I think we can still bounce back from this point," Shanaka said after the loss to New Zealand.

"We have bounced back in the past, especially this young team. So they have gone through a lot of hard times.

"So I think we still can bounce back from this situation and manage to get to the semis."

Sri Lanka actually made a bright start to their Super 12 clash against the Black Caps in Sydney as they picked up a host of early wickets to reduce New Zealand to 15/3 after four overs.

But a brilliant century to Glenn Phillips and a host of dropped catches in the field saw the Kiwis post a big total of 167/7 from their 20 overs.

"I thought we started really well, but the dropped catches, that's a game changer in this game," Shanaka lamented.

"It was an outstanding knock (from Phillips) on a tough wicket.

"He took a while to get settled in, and then he got his timing (right) and there was a lot of time to hit the ball."

Shanaka said his team must re-group quickly and concentrate on showing the form that helped them recently claim a sixth Asia Cup title when they take on Afghanistan at The Gabba on Thursday.

"We don't want to blame anyone. What we need to do is to regroup in the next game and come (back) sharp in the next two games," Shanaka said.

"Today is the worst day with batting. I think it was the worst we've played with batting. So what is important is to re-group as a batting unit and win the next two games.”
