New Zealand [178 & 585/4d] beat Sri Lanka [104 & 236] by 423 runs in the 2nd Test to win series 1-0

After salvaging a battling draw in Wellington, Sri Lanka will look to again bring their A-game against hosts New Zealand in the second and final Test in Christchurch.

New Zealand v Sri Lanka
2nd Test
Hagley Oval, Christchurch
Wednesday, 26 December; 11.00am local, 10pm GMT (-1)

New Zealand were all over Sri Lanka in the first half of the first Test, bundling them for 282 in a little over a day, and then riding on Tom Latham's unbeaten 264 to post a mammoth 578 to set the stage for a dominating result.

But Sri Lanka fought back through a brilliant, unbroken 274-run partnership between Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews, who batted all of the fourth day and were then aided by rain on the fifth to deny the Kiwis.

While admittedly the Basin Reserve pitch flattened out considerably after the first day, it was still a remarkable effort by the visitors, given they were up against a team that had just historically beaten Pakistan 2-1 in UAE – their first overseas win against them since 1962.

Sri Lanka still have plenty to worry about, most notably the fragility of the top order. In the first innings, they were reduced to 9/3 and scored only four more at the loss of as many wickets in the second dig. That is one area in which they will have to make amends.

Yet, they will take heart from how they recovered from those situations. Mathews played the lead role: In the first innings, he scored 83 and stitched up a 133-run partnership with Dimuth Karunaratne, who made 79. Then he made 120* to steer Sri Lanka to safety, with Mendis remaining unbeaten on 141 when the match was brought to a premature close.

Apart from them, Niroshan Dickwella too showed signs of form with a fantastic 80* to help somewhat beef up Sri Lanka's first-innings score.

Sri Lanka will also have to worry about how they were unable to make regular inroads with the ball. In their defence, the pitch wasn't very responsive to their efforts, but that'll still be something they will have to consider.

New Zealand will feel fairly pleased about how they went about it for the first three days. Tim Southee was on top his game taking six scalps in the first innings and adding a couple more to his tally in Sri Lanka's second dig. They will be slightly worried about how easily Sri Lanka dealt with Wagner's short balls, scoring 100 off him in just 23 overs in their second innings.

Their batsmen look in prime form too, with Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls getting fifties to complement Latham's effort. Even Jeet Raval and Colin de Grandhomme scored in the forties. They will hope to continue in similar fashion in the second game.

Key players

Tim Southee (New Zealand): With just a hint of movement, the right-arm seamer was able to make regular strikes in Sri Lanka's first innings. Even in the second innings, he took a couple of wickets and kept things very tight even when Mathews and Mendis knuckled down for their heroic effort. If he gets that little bit of support in Hagley Oval, he could be the star for New Zealand.

Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka): The right-handed stalwart has been in seriously good form of late, and he extended that run in the first Test with two big scores. If New Zealand's bowlers start asking tough questions in the Boxing Day Test, Mathews will have to summon all his experience and show his other less experienced teammates how it is done.

Conditions

It will be cool and intermittently cloudy through the five days. Unfortunately, there's a bit of rain on the radar too, but one hopes that it doesn't show itself too much. As for the pitch, it is likely to be green and seam-friendly initially, but it will be interesting to see whether it flattens out as the game progresses.

Squads

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Colin de Grandhomme, BJ Watling (wk), Will Young, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Ajaz Patel, Trent Boult, Neil Wagner

SRL has best chance in many years to win a Test (Series) in NZ. First 3 days are likely to be gloomy which should keep this track fresh. It might happen that SRL’s last innings is played under best batting condition. They must make sure that they don’t blow 1st innings.

Great spirit by Sri Lanka in the 1st Test.

They must be going into the 2nd Test confident and in good spirits.

Still fancy NZ to win though.

Damn, was a good toss to win on this wicket. Hopefully NZ can get bowled out for a super low score, 150 or less and SL will be in a great position

Getting tired of these green mambas that NZ continue to dish up. What’s the point if the wicket continues to get flatter as the game goes on.

They say, if you put a side in after winning toss, for your advantage must take 3+ wickets before lunch. So, SRL has ticked the first box, now must ensure that NZL doesn’t run away with scoring. SRL shouldn’t mind Kiwis end the day 198-7, so that they can clean the tail tomorrow morning and start batting under better condition. Kiwis probably won’t mind getting all out inside 80 overs at a good rate so that they have 2 bites against Lankan top order with new ball either side of Day 1 Stumps.

Lanka will get rolled on this wicket jugding how Lakmal has bowled.

Wellington is as flat a pitch as any these days. Bangladesh piled up 595-8 declared at Wellington couple years back.

What a comeback from Southee.

I swear Taylor is involved in a run out every 5 innings :))

That's the only way to get a result, it's either this or a road from day one.

Wow... NZ blown away for 178.. Lakmal bowled really well today

Sri lanka have about 40 overs to bat tonight, I reckon they should concentrate on conserving wickets, 80-2 at the end of the day will be a good score

SL may get bowled out cheaply here before pitch becomes flat.

These pitches are lottery pitches and you want to surely win toss here.

88/4
it is 50/50 match

At Stumps on Day 1 of the 2nd Test, in reply to New Zealand's 178, Sri Lanka have reached 88/4 and trail hosts by 90 runs; For NZ, Tim Southee made 68 whilst RAS Lakmal took 5/54; Tim Southee has taken 3/29 so far for NZ in SL's 1st innings

More wickets like this please.

Better that matches end in 3 days than to drag them out to 5 on roads.

3 wickets off the over for Boult.

Triple wicket maiden, the drought has ended today.

Boult misses the hattrick by a ball.

4 wickets in 8 balls.

5fer for him.

5 in 11 balls :)))

Fastest 5fer ever?

6 wickets, 15 balls and 4 runs.

What a spell.

Mathews left watching the collapse from the other end.

Awful collapse by SL. They let this match slip when they let Southee score a flukey 50 yesterday. What a match Southee is having, took an amazing catch.

Did you watch it? No chance they could have survived it, the bowling was just too good for the tail.

The ball was doing way too much.

I do not think Lanka can win this game , yesterday Kiwis lower order played too well. That was the turning point.

102/0 here with both the openers at the crease. New Zealand are well ahead in the game with 3 more days to go.

New Zealand end Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka on a very comfortable 231/2, with a lead of 305 runs; Tom Latham is 74*, Ross Taylor 25* with one wicket apiece for Kumara and Perera for the visitors;

I don't doubt the bowling was great but I feel like SL let the match slip letting someone like Southee score 60+ when they had NZ at like 60-6, they could have been bowled out for less than 100

Another 100 for Nicols, Latham falls short of a double.

Lead of 535, should declare that seems like a difficult chase even if the wicket has flattened up.

At Stumps on Day 3 of the 2nd Test match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the visitors are hanging on at 24/2, needing an improbable score of 660 to win; Great work by Latham (176), Nicholls (162*) & CdG (71*) to take their team to 585/4d

SL 66/2. Chasing a mammoth 660. Why did NZ even set such a ridiculous target.

4th consecutive series win for the Kiwis - first time ever for them according to Cricinfo.

Also up to number 3 in the test rankings.

And people say Pakistan is at their worst.
If Pakistan has decent middle order batsman I think we could compete better against top ranked teams.
Sri Lanka need an all round reform
