Defending Champions Australia kick off their title defence on home soil in a repeat of last year's final, facing up against their age-old adversaries, New Zealand.

Australia & New Zealand meet for the opening fixture of the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup, with both sides looking to stamp their authority early in the tournament. Pitted in group 1 alongside Afghanistan, England, Ireland and Sri Lanka, both sides will understand the importance that a victory on an opening day can do to their chances of progression.

Overview

The SCG is due to welcome the third encounter between the two sides at the T20 World Cup, with the record standing at one win apiece. New Zealand head into the showpiece event looking to exact revenge after they fell to defeat last year in Dubai.

Kane Williamson's valiant effort of 85 from 48 deliveries proved to be in vain, as Australia chased down the total for the loss of only two wickets, spearheaded by Mitch Marsh's player of the match-winning 77 not out.

Heading into the maiden Super 12 clash, New Zealand find themselves in a strong vein of form across the game's shortest format. In 15 T20Is this calendar year, the Black Caps came out victorious on 12 occasions.

Another element that looms low over the heads of the New Zealand squad has been their inability to win against Australia in Australia (across any format) since 2011, a record they will be looking to rectify on Saturday.

On the other hand, Australia start their T20 World Cup title defence coming off the back of mixed fortune in the format with just three wins inside their last ten fixtures. Spurred on by the home crowd, Australia will look to remedy any pre-tournament woes with a confidence-boosting victory in the opening match.

Key Players

David Warner - Player of the tournament at last year's edition, the Australian opener led by example as he spearheaded his side to a maiden T20 World Cup title in the UAE. Warner's run-scoring exploits on falling second fiddle to Babar Azam as he returned 289 runs at an average of 48.16.

With a string of back-to-back 70s in Australia's fixtures leading up to their opening match, Warner looks a man primed to fight for a second successive title.

Trent Boult - A vital component in the Blackcap's journey to last year's final, the left-arm quick is one of the most dangerous bowlers in world cricket.

The best-performing seamer at the 2021 tournament registered 13 scalps at an average of 13.30. Boult will once again be fundamental to New Zealand's chances of success whether it be bowling overs up front or at the death.

Predicted Playing XIs

Australia - David Warner, Aaron Finch, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

New Zealand - Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Adam Milne

Australia remarkably has not lost a “home” world cup game since 11th March 1992 against Cornered Tigers of Imran Khan.

After crushing defeat at Perth, Sir Allan Border’s men won last 2 matches and fast forward Michael Clarke’s men won all matches at home in 2015 world cup, they had 1 game rained off i think, Aussies did lose a match in 15 world cup but it was not in Australian soil. It was in New zealand.

30 years and 7 months on, which team will beat Australia in Australia in world cup game.
Time will tell.

Weather could be an issue

That is best thing to happen to Pakistan. For our world cup triumph it is imperative New zealand qualifies for Semi Finals, not Australia.

If Nzl-Aus share 1 point each. I can rest assure, England will beat Australia. So their 3 points are gone. + England will dent their run rate as well.

That leaves us with Afghanistan, Ireland, Sri lanka.
What if Another game of theirs is washed out ?

Or sri lanka upsets Australia.

In case of another washout Aussies can maximum get 6 points ( it will not be enough)

In case they lose to Sri lanka ( they will
End up on 5 points).

Australia and New Zealand are hunting for any advantage and will make a late call on their respective teams for the opening match of their T20 World Cup campaigns.

The pre-match net sessions for the heated rivals proved to be fascinating viewing, with New Zealand bringing in former Australian international and SCG local Steve O’Keefe to consult with the bowling corps in the build-up to Saturday’s encounter.

Australian skipper Finch meanwhile owned up on his Achilles heel of left-arm quicks swinging the new ball, before facing up to bowling coach Daniel Vettori’s left-arm throw downs at length in the nets to mimic Trent Boult’s angles.

“I think at times I’ve been a bit more negative to left-arm bowlers,” Finch said.

“You’re almost batting trying not to get out as opposed to trying to be proactive."

The New Zealand seamer has dismissed the Australian opener six times at international level, though in T20I cricket Finch has negotiated the threat to this point, dismissed just once and scoring 46 off 34 deliveries.

Perhaps looking at the 15 dot balls in his match-up to Boult in T20Is, and with doubts growing about his technique over the last few months, Finch pledged to be more proactive.

“He (Boult) had my number no doubt (in international cricket). I still feel as though I’ve got a really solid game plan. There’s some technical things I can do to a left-armer that can help,” Finch said.

New Zealand haven’t beaten Australia in over a decade, though with both the Kiwi talent and rain clouds looming in Sydney, Finch admitted the side are far from finalising a playing XI.

“If there is rain around and the game is shortened, that can dictate what you do with your team.

"But we’re really confident that all the stuff we’ve done in the lead-up to this, that there’s enough bases we can cover with our squad.”

New Zealand reached out to O’Keefe through New South Wales bowling coach Andre Adams, and skipper Kane Williamson was grateful for the extra knowledge.

“We have a number of spinners in our group that were keen to have a bit of a chat, and he knows these conditions as well as anybody.”

“It was a nice opportunity for them to have a few conversations with a very experienced spinner in this format.”

Saturday’s Super 12 match between Australia and New Zealand is officially a sell-out.

a 5 over game will suit NZ, hopefully its a shorten game and NZ nicks it would open up the group

LOL hahahahha new zealand is really really bad in australia just like Pakistan.

I just heard a fact that new Zealand hasn't won a match in australia since 2011 that's outrageous.

Australia is gonna maul new zealand just like Islam makhachev is gonna maul Charles oliviera today in Abu Dhabi UFC 280.

Australia have won the toss and have opted to field

Australia (Playing XI): Aaron Finch(c), David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Matthew Wade(w), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

Wiliiamson: Would've bowled as well for the same reason. Guys have been working hard and training. No changing the past but for us it's about playing for what's important for our game. Really commit to our plans.

New Zealand (Playing XI): Devon Conway(w), Finn Allen, Kane Williamson(c), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult

There is something almost surreal about watching this on Sony UHD tv on Sky sports with Sony Home Theatre 5.1 system.

Here's hoping for an exciting match to kickoff the tournament.

NZL have a dismal record vs AUS in AUS so hard to look past the hosts, but let's see.

Mitchell starc used to swing a bit but now he is very flat and pace is not that much as well.

Gulf in quality between the associate level cricket and the big boys!

Finn Allen not wasting any time to exploit the fielding restrictions.

And another boundary !

And some people insisted that Australia are favourites. They are clearly in decline. England are favourites, peeps.

If Australia wins this world cup it will be due to their monster batting.
Pat Cummins is not a good T20 bowler Josh Hazlewood is not a good T20 bowler only starc is good in this format but he is clearly struggling a lot.

Allen smashing Cummins, Starc and Hazelwood as if trundlers Bhuvi Kumar and Arshdeep Singh opening the pace attack.

Listen to Gilchrist

He said Fin Allen has done his job with his 35 off 13 for Nz and anything on top is a bonus.

This is what T20 opening is about! A true white ball legend would know!

so 140 all out is ok with you after that start?

You need to have players to do something with that start.

Thats what you call t20 taking the initiative creating panic in the opposition
Well played finn. Now rizbab poster boy williamson walks in

This pitch looks batting paradise. So true bounce and ball coming to the bat very fine.

Welcome to modern day batting. Fantastic start by NZ. If we get the whole game it will be a cracker.

You can’t approach matches with such a negative mindset. The brave start has allowed Williamson to come in play 3 dots to bed himself in.

I am super impressed with the guts shown by New Zealand

Cummins bowls better against left handers than righties in this format but he needs to bowl from around the wicket.

Now that Finn is gone, run rate will slow down probably.

NZ need at least 180.

NZ - 65/1 (6 overs).

A couple of sedate overs but the brave start means they’re still well over 10 an over in the PP.

This simple point is lost on our negative team management

Hero and idol of Rizwan and Babar, classy tuk tuk legend Williamson trying to suck all life out of New Zealand's innings now

Unlikely they will get all out at 140 after this start.

An example, look at what Sehwag did in 2011 World Cup semis. It just allowed Gambhir and Tendulkar to tuk tuk, there was a bit of collapse too in middle order yet they ended with a match winning score.

A blistering start from top order in LOIs makes life so much easy for rest of the batsman.

Average 1st innings score in the BBL last year at Sydney was 182. You need to score higher than that to ensure a win . Also, last couple of years, pitch has been getting better and better for batting.

Stoinis running away with a cheap over, all thanks to Williamson trying to get his eyes in.

Williamson is the anchor that NZ don't need and want.

Pakistani fans would love him to pieces.

It blends with their thinking.

Williamson shouldn't play T20. He is pretty much a specialist captain in this format.
