West Indies’ bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs against New Zealand in the first T20I and will aim to avoid similar mistakes on 29 November, Sunday.

Overview

New Zealand vs West Indies, 2nd T20I
Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
Sunday, 29 November, 02.00pm local time, 01.00am GMT

West Indies moved below Afghanistan in the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings after their loss to New Zealand on Friday. Their recent T20I performances and the tag as defending champions of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup haven’t gone hand-in-hand and West Indies are aware of it.

“It's sometimes tough - winning two T20 World Cups and ranking No. 9 in the world is kind of off-balance, but I believe we'll get back up there in the rankings,” opener Andre Fletcher stated before the first game of the series.

Their latest loss comes off the back of a poor middle-order collapse and some ill-disciplined death bowling in the final stages at Eden Park. West Indies know they are a dangerous T20I side, but they will need to be smart with their aggression if they are to push New Zealand out of their comfort zone.

They might consider handing a debut to Kyle Mayers, who impressed in the Caribbean Premier League, in place of Rovman Powell. Leg-spinner Hayden Walsh could also get a look in with the short boundaries at Eden Park out of the way. The opening duo of Brandon King and Andre Fletcher is likely to remain untouched after their blistering start on Friday.

The Kiwis, on the other hand, will rue the fact that they couldn’t bowl West Indies out for a lower total after they had dismissed the top-order inside the Powerplay phase. Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee were impressive for them with the ball, but bringing in Ish Sodhi could provide them with an additional spin option for Hamish Bennett. Kyle Jamieson, who Shane Bond rates rather highly, could get a longer rope despite an ordinary debut in T20Is.
Remember the last time

West Indies’ only T20I win in New Zealand came in a Super Over back in 2008. It is bizarre that despite the short boundaries and flat pitches aiding their style of play in T20s, Windies haven’t had much luck in the country. Kieron Pollard's onslaught at the death gave them a massive total at Eden Park. But James Neesham and Mitchell Santner's equally destructive knocks overshadowed Pollard's innings.
What they said:

Devon Conway (New Zealand batsman): “I don't listen too much about the expectations people have for me. I think about staying in the moment and to focus on the task at hand. Whatever else happens, happens. I try to get away from that sort of thing."

Kieron Pollard (West Indies captain): “A bit of indiscipline showed for us, in the bowling, and losing five wickets in that space of time in the batting too. Having said that, we put a challenging total. International cricket, five-six no balls, high full tosses, that's not good. So, we have to come back stronger, we have to be mentally tough.”

What an innings from Phillips.

Conway looks the real deal too and should be playing in every format.

Lockie will expose a lot Pakistani batsmen. His bouncer is so good.

It will be fun to watch Haider Ali dance around

NZ 238/3 (20)
WI 74/4 (10) CRR: 7.4 REQ: 16.5
West Indies need 165 runs in 60 balls

He's exposed a lot of of players. Pretty much the whole west indies team here. Haider will definetly struggle against the Bouncers but hes solid against pace other then that.

He's been amazing so far, man he's gotten even better than last year.

One of my favorite players to watch today, was looking to see him at Eden Park and my god was he rapid. The WI players looked scared of him and were clearly struggling with the pace.

Yeah. Watched him today he was way too good for the West indies players. Bowling consistently over 150kph.

Phillips and Devon Conway stitched the best T20I partnership for any wicket other than the first, setting up New Zealand's stunning 72-run win in the second T20I in Mount Maunganui.

The fastest T20I ton by a New Zealand player, two catches and a brilliant run out from Glenn Phillips helped New Zealand seal a series win against West Indies on Sunday with one game to go. The hosts began the day well and were worked into a truly advantageous position in the last four overs of their innings when Phillips and Conway plundered 70 runs.

The onslaught took New Zealand to 238/3 in 20 overs, their third-highest total in the format. If the run-chase wasn't hard enough already, the early wicket of Brandon King to a fine delivery from Kyle Jamieson followed by the run out of Andre Fletcher compounded West Indies' woes.

By the 10th over, New Zealand also had debutant Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran back in the hut, the former taken out by a brilliant catch from the centurion, Phillips. A late cameo from Kieron Pollard couldn't soften the blow much as West Indies ended at 166/9 in 20 overs.

Earlier in the day, the visitors won the toss and opted to bowl first with Kieron Pollard citing the possibility of rain as a reason. Tim Seifert (18 off 13) was dismissed after a short cameo when he tried to be cheeky against Oshane Thomas. Martin Guptill (34 off 23) was also dismissed in the next over and West Indies appeared to have taken control of proceedings.

Conway and Phillips looked in good touch, however, taking time to get their eye in before lashing out. Both were on 15 at just over run-a-ball at the halfway stage of the innings before they started giving charge.

Phillips hit a six and back-to-back fours off Keemo Paul's second over to push New Zealand's total over 100. Two overs later, he clubbed Fabian Allen for a hat-trick of sixes in a 24-run over and the team run-rate soared to over 10 runs per over.

The rain-break shortly after had no effect on the momentum Conway and Phillips had gathered. The two consolidated until the final four overs before the carnage unfolded, with 47 runs taken off the 17th and 18th over combined.

Phillips raced to a 46-ball century, the fastest by a Kiwi in the format, and Devon Conway completed a maiden T20I fifty in the final frenzy. The total seemed well past West Indies' reach after the early wickets lost New Zealand were able to ram home the advantage.

Last time the two teams faced, Ferguson had figures of 50-1 after 8 overs and this was in a pretty low scoring match. I think the Pakistani batsman will be fine.
