New Zealand (320/5) defeat Pakistan (260) comfortably by 60 runs to clinch triumph in the inaugural match of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Great win black caps!
Loved it.

Still got bang and india to go need to win atleast one of those 2. Bangladesh can be tough in these conditions.

Great knocks from young and even Latham who I didn't want in this squad

The problem with rizwan type players is that they require hand holding from someone else to succeed at the crease.

Last time it was agha, Before this it was Abdullah.

In both games vs sri lanka and sa he played a good innings but it was a support role.

Same with Babar, People don't remember that his 2019 innings vs NZ was equally slow and Haris sohail masked the innings and hard carried him, yet people used the whole difficult conditons excuse.

At their best these 2 are accumulators who require support at the other end. At their worst their tail enders.

Saud in odi is the exact same, infact he's worse lol.

Fakhar and saim make a huge difference and it's no wonder Pakistan in t20 collapsed as soon as these 2 were made openers.
Ha ha ... you'll find any half baked analogy to fit your narrative. Its not happening man until you become a selector.

Man this is the absolute goddamn truth word for word. Used this post on my social media.

I disliked the hype of Inzi as he was dire across 5 WCs, dire abroad but if him and Yousaf settled and got 10 overs they'd destroy teams in the subcontinent. We don't have anyone like that except Fakhar.

I notice a pattern among some fans. Whenever somebody does well in a format they automatically assume they will be good in all the formats. Logic is "They use same bat, they face same round ball. how hard it is to make the adjustment". Based on that logic Saud shakeel has found a spot in ODI. He will trouble finding a place even in 80s squad. Salim Malik scored 72 runs in 6 overs in 1987 against Kapil, Maninder to pull off a miracle win. I am not sure Saud can do even now.

This mindset comes from Misbah-holics

Misbah shamelessly argues that a good Test batter will naturally be a good white ball or T20 batter

It’s the reason why Misbah-holics are desperate for the all format comparison more than rating a player according to each format separately

Mohammad Rizwan in a post match ceremony:

"They made a good target, we didn't expect that. We were looking at something around 260. We tried our best and used all tactics, but they played well and put up a good target. We see the pitch conditions, earlier the pitch wasn't easy to bat but when Will Young and Latham got together batted it got easier. At the end, we made the same mistake like we did in Lahore and they made a good target."

"We didn't get a good start with the bat. (On the extent of injury to Fakhar Zaman) Not sure yet, he hasn't got his result yet. He is in some pain. We lost the momentum twice - once while bowling in the death and then while batting in the powerplay. It is disappointing for us, we played it like a normal match. The match is gone now and hopefully we can do better in the rest."

Pathetic. If “we tried out best and used all our tactics” refers to scoring 20 runs in 10 overs then god forbid O see Pakistan play when they don’t try their best.

This is how your captain bats

This is how his team will follow

This is our way @daytrader

Can we use the same excuse you do that he was batting out of position :imad

Also let's not forget that the tempo was set by one of your own Karachities and if he had stayed at the crease for a few more minutes, Rizwan could've batted where he preferred

Single handedly destroyed the psyche and vision of Pakistan cricket in the 2010s and 2020s.

Work was super intense so I didn't get to see a ball today. Looks like I didn't miss out, so Alhumdulillah I didn't see the garbage batting from the likes of Babar, Rizwan and etc as per usual.

In first ipl dravid picked all the test players and argued the same against franchise owners.laatwr dravid got booted out.i think all format batter is the excuse for safety first /anchor /statpad types such as dravid, misbah, rizbar ,kl etc.why because they know they can't compete with the format specialists. They will bring all kind of excuses and fancy terms.even dravid was at best anchor in role and no wonder misbah played with him in ipl.

The reality is that Pakistan are a mediocre cricket nation and not good enough. Accept it. :kp :inti

If they’re a mediocre cricket nation, the anxiety and stress they give opponents is unprecedented for a mediocre cricket nation.

It’s never easy to beat them.

Alot of hue and cry and rightly so after defeat from NZ , tbh it was coming there were mincing out during triseries and the last rites done in CT opener.

Will Young speaking during the Pakistan vs New Zealand post-match press conference:

[Reporter:]

What do you think – you did not have to take any risks during your innings and it seemed like a very seamless innings, and as we compare it to Pakistan, they were struggling to keep going. So, do you want to talk about it?

[Will Young:]

Certainly, it didn’t seem risk free. One thing our batting unit talked about is creating partnerships throughout our innings, and it was only a small partnership with Dev but we got the ball rolling, and unfortunately we lost Kane early and Daryl not long after that. So Tommy and I talked about building a partnership and just felt like Pakistan got 3-4 dot balls and we managed to get a boundary not long after and it just kept the momentum of the innings going and then I think we got to where we wanted to after 30 overs and I felt with Tommy – we both felt that the game was in the balance at that point, 140 odd for 3 after 30 overs I think it was and then from there we had a platform to launch from and obviously the way Tommy and JP finished the innings was just brilliant.

[Reporter:]

How does it feel to keep home crowd silent for most of the time and then your knock turned out to be a winning knock for the team to start off this Champions Trophy on a high note.

[Will Young:]

Yeah brilliant to start of the Champions Trophy with a win. Just on the crowd – they weren’t too quiet, they were a really good crowd, they were noisy throughout and yeah its been awesome playing in Pakistan and yeah hopefully the crowds are the same throughout the tournament, cause they were brilliant today.

[Reporter:]

Fourth ODI hundred – first away from home. The way you pasted your innings – have you made plans of how to score in Power Play and then plan after power play, because this is a very pure modern ODI innings that you played, and away from home. So how much it means to you?

[Will Young:]

Yeah, thank you. It means a great deal to bring up my fourth ODI 100 today. As I said before, it makes it easier if you focus on the partnerships that you're in rather than focusing too much about your own personal score or anything like that. But yeah, in the power play, I think the nature of the power play, there's more people in the ring, so you're going to hit fielders more often, there's going to be more dots, but on the flip side to that there's opportunity to score some boundaries. I managed to get a few away in the power play which sort of got my innings and our innings going, and then through the middle it's a different challenge altogether, spinners come into it. Four fielders out, sort of the gaps open up and you try and score off as many balls as you can to keep them momentum going so Yeah, very pleased with the way things panned out today. And yeah, have a meaningful contribution on the game with my partnership with Tommy.

[Reporter:]

Pakistan won the toss and then of course New Zealand was 72 for 3. So, what was the initial target for New Zealand before Pakistan chase. After loss of 3 wickets at 73, what was your revised target then?

[Will Young:]

To be completely honest with you, Tommy and I knew we were in a little bit of trouble three down. We didn't want to look too far ahead and start talking past scores and things like that. We wanted to get to 30 overs, three down. That was our first goal. Then the next phase was to the 35th over and then I got out after that. But when I came off, I think I got out in the 38th over, I was saying to the boys I thought 280 was a really good total. If the seamers hit a good length, it was difficult. The odd ball was going down. We saw from the Pakistan spinners as well that when they slowed the ball up, especially, it would hold in the surface and there was a bit of turn there. And when they fired it through a little bit quicker, it was skiddy. So, it wasn't easy. And I thought 280 was a good score. And obviously, the way GP and Tommy got things going, it was just brilliant the way that they finished off the innings. And to get to 320, we all felt that we were slightly ahead of the game at that point. But in the same breath, as you say, Pakistan chased down 350 on the same wicket. So, we knew we had to start well, and thankfully we did that and managed to keep it going.

[Reporter:]

So, it's regarding, yesterday I've asked Tom Latham regarding the pitch behaviour - And I have asked him that the pitch behaviour in the second session will be difficult for the batting. And we have seen today it was same. So, it is too early to say about the group winner. Today was a very crucial match. The next match against India, and you are in a good position to go into the semi-finals. So, what do you think against India? What would be the strategy? It would be the same as we are playing against Pakistan today or what would be changed?

[Will Young:]

We've got Bangladesh next in Islamabad. And then we've got India, our third game in Dubai. So just game at a time. Obviously, it's nice to get that first game under the belt with a win, but we travel to Islamabad tomorrow and got to prep for a different side. Obviously we're fully prepared for Bangladesh to suit these conditions and be a really tough team to beat. So yeah just focusing on our next objective there is to beat Bangladesh.

[Reporter:]

Death, taxes, and Glenn Phillips. How does he keep doing it?

[Will Young:]

Good question. He's a special man, Glenn Phillips. He's got a very unique diving style doesn't he? He lets the ball come and just seems to pluck it out of the air, especially square the wicket he's so, so good. So Yeah, obviously the huge wicket of Rizwan again was key and it just put the icing on the cake of our power play really as well 20-odd for two is a lot different to one down. So yeah, fair play to Glenn, well done

[Reporter:]

Well, Tom Latham said yesterday that what was satisfying was different guys that come to the fore in every single match. And given you didn't quite have the tri- series, perhaps you would have wanted, was there perhaps a little bit of extra pressure on you off the big occasion in the last three innings?

[Will Young:]

Yeah, perhaps. You try not to think too much about what's happened in cricket. The next game is the most important one and if you've got the opportunity to play you want to make the most of it. But yeah I mean your form goes sort of up and down, but I was pretty keen to stick to what I know I can do well, win that straight battle, wait for them to miss the lines or the lengths and go from there. And thankfully, yeah, thankfully I managed to get it done today.

While speaking on a private TV channel, Waqar Younis said:

“Saud Shakeel played 19 balls and made 6 runs. 60 off 90 (from Babar) we have already seen. Rizwan made 3 from 14 balls. If you are chasing 250 then I will say take your time but if you are chasing 320 then it’s a crime. And if you are committing a crime from the top then there’s nothing for lower-order batters to do.”

Pakistan fined for slow over-rate against New Zealand at ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan have been fined 5 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 on Wednesday.

Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Mohammad Rizwan’s side was ruled to be 1 over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

Mohammad pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula, third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Alex Wharf levelled the charge.

Is it not true that Kohli averages like a tail ender over 5 years? Should I pull out the stats? He has 3 hundreds in 5 years and all on phattas.
No, I am talking about the fact that India has better replacement for Kohli than Babar.

Please keep your precious Babar with you, yours is the only team that will tolerate this type of player.
Maybe Bangladesh too
