What's new

New Zealand tour of England, Ireland, Scotland and Netherlands (2022)

A maiden T20I fifty from Dane Cleaver, a terrific spell from Ish Sodhi and a hat-trick towards the end from Michael Bracewell saw New Zealand beat Ireland by 88 runs in the second T20I in Belfast.

The contrasting start for New Zealand openers

While Finn Allen was quick to get off the blocks, smashing the fourth ball of the innings for a six, and adding five more boundaries in the first four overs, Martin Guptill didn't manage a single boundary in his 17-ball stay that lasted till the ninth over. At the end of the powerplay, New Zealand had 51 on board, largely due to Allen's enterprising 20-ball 35, but the opener fell to Josh Little to give Ireland an opening.

Dane Cleaver sizzles with maiden T20I fifty

In the absence of Kane Williamson, his cousin Dane Cleaver played a very similar role, settling in by making 23 off his first 22 balls before going berserk. Cleaver found support from Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell, but did the bulk of the hitting himself in the second half.

105 runs came off the last 10 overs of the innings as Cleaver went on to make 55 off his last 33 balls. New Zealand set Ireland a target of 180, a total above which Ireland had successfully chased down only twice in their T20I history.

Ireland struggle

Paul Stirling began the run-chase with a third-ball six, but things went downhill for Ireland soon after. Lockie Ferguson, fresh off a brilliant performance in the last game, sent back Stirling while Jacob Duffy removed Andrew Balbirnie and Gareth Delany. Harry Tector was run out in between the twin strikes to leave Ireland tottering at 41/4.

This soon turned into 54/7 as Ish Sodhi picked up three wickets in his first two overs. A late cameo from Mark Adair got Ireland closer to the three-figure mark, but Michael Bracewell had other plans.

A hat-trick for Michael Bracewell

Bracewell can do no wrong on this tour. The off-spinner came into the attack in the 14th over and sent back Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy and Craig Young off successive deliveries to register a hat-trick. Bracewell became the third New Zealand men's player to register a T20I hat-trick after Jacob Oram and Tim Southee. Ireland were bowled out for 91 as New Zealand completed an 88-run win.

Ireland bounced back from a disappointing batting performance in the second T20I – when they were bowled out for 91 – and had New Zealand on 65-3 at one stage, but an 82-run stand between Phillips and Daryl Mitchell saw the Black Caps effectively navigate a tricky period to secure a 3-0 series victory.

Ireland batted first and Paul Stirling was immediately at his blistering best, striking a six with his second ball of the innings as he moved to 19 off 10. However, at the other end Andrew Balbirnie perished to Blair Tickner for a 16-ball 10.

But Stirling and Lorcan Tucker kept moving at a healthy rate, putting on 46 off 31 balls for the second wicket. The latter looked in good touch when taking on the left-arm spin of Mitchell Santner, showcasing his array of sweeps and some quick feet down the ground to record three consecutive boundaries.

Stirling was undone by the spin of Ish Sodhi – a bit of extra bounce caught the right-hander’s glove for a catch behind – to depart for 40 and Tucker fell for 28 off 19 in the following over to leave Ireland 81-3 in the 11th over.

New Zealand slowed the scoring as Ireland tumbled to 116-6 in the 17th over, but then came a blistering stand between Mark Adair and Curtis Campher. The pair put on 58 off just 23 deliveries, with the former smashing an astonishing four sixes and two fours in his 15-ball 37.

In response, Finn Allen raced out of the blocks for New Zealand, depositing Craig Young for 14 runs in the space of three balls. But Young had the perfect response, ending his first over with a pinpoint yorker to send Allen on his way.

Martin Guptill kept the aggression going, moving to 21 off 12, but Josh Little had Dane Cleaver pull the ball straight to Campher at deep square leg for 5 to leave New Zealand 41-2 in the fifth over.

George Dockrell had two catches dropped off two consecutive balls in his first over – Phillips was the lucky man – but it was a case of third time lucky when Guptill top-edged a sweep off the left-armer to Little at short fine-leg.

Ireland were in a strong position but Phillips and Mitchell began the rebuild, rotating the strike before 20 runs off Campher in the 15th over softened the equation.

Little dismissed Mitchell for 48 in the 17th over, taking a return catch after the right-hander top-edged a pull, but Jimmy Neesham arrived to play a blistering cameo of 23* off six to end the match and series.

New Zealand made 254/5, their highest ever total in T20Is, against Scotland in the second T20I in Edinburgh to register a massive 102-run win and complete a 2-0 series victory.

Mark Chapman makes most of game time

Mark Chapman last played a T20I in 2021, but with an opportunity coming his way, the left-hander made it count to the fullest. Walking in at No.3, Chapman moved to 23 off 15 balls inside the powerplay overs, but took off in the middle overs in the company of Daryl Mitchell. Chapman brought up his fifty off 27 balls before slamming 33 off his last 17 balls to bring up a career-best 83 off a mere 44 balls. When Chapman was dismissed in the 16th over, New Zealand 175/4 and aiming at a total of around the 220-run mark.

The Neesham-Bracewell onslaught

Jimmy Neesham and Michael Bracewell, though, had other ideas. Neesham hit a six off the third ball he faced while Bracewell, who had already started his rampage, hit 26 runs off Alasdair Evans’ over to make a 22-ball fifty, his first in T20Is. 15 more runs came off the final over as New Zealand put on their highest ever T20I total of 254. The Neesham-Bracewell stand worth 79 off 28 balls is the fifth-quickest in T20I history for partnerships of over 25 balls.

Spinners continue to trouble Scotland

In the first T20I, Scotland lost six wickets to the New Zealand spin duo of Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner. Here, Sodhi, Santner, and Bracewell once again stifled the hosts as they struggled to string together partnerships. Michael Rippon went on to grab a couple of wickets too amidst the ruckus.

Earlier, after Bracewell broke the opening stand in the second over, Neesham went on to take two wickets in the fourth as Scotland succumbed to 33/3. A misunderstanding resulted in a run-out and another wicket in the Powerplay. Despite Chris Greaves making a promising 29-ball 37, the Scotland innings never gathered enough momentum to threaten New Zealand’s huge total.

New Zealand finished their tour with 9-0 record after losing 0-3 to England.

Biggest positive was Bracewell. He was the star player.
