The Black Caps coach Mike Hesson has named nine players in the one-day squad to take on India next month, with six more to be added from the New Zealand A side currently touring.

The two sides will square off in three ODIs, the first of which will be in Mumbai on October 22.

Three Twenty20s will follow the series, with the squad for this to be announced when the remainder of the ODI team is named.

Hesson said that while Neesham and Broom had missed out on this squad, they still had the opportunity to push their way back into the side for the home summer.

"It will be disappointing for James and Neil, but we've talked through the areas that we'd like to see them work on and if we see development they'll certainly both come into the reckoning come the home summer," said Hesson.

"Neil was really effective for us batting at three or four last season, but we have quality, established batsmen in those positions and we'd like to see Neil develop his game further to show he has the skills to bat at five.

"Jimmy needs go back and really dominate domestic cricket with both bat and ball. We know Jimmy is a talented player, but we've spoken with him around improving the consistency in all areas of his game."

"The nine we've picked have made up the core of our ODI team for a while and all of them have experience playing in India," said Hesson.

"With a number of our top guys already playing in India, it's helpful to be able to select the squad in two parts. With six spots left, there's an obvious incentive for the players in New Zealand A to perform and put their best foot forward."

The team depart for India on 12 October.

Black Caps initial squad:

Kane Williamson (c) - Northern Districts

Trent Boult - Northern Districts

Colin de Grandhomme - Auckland

Martin Guptill - Auckland

Tom Latham - Canterbury

Adam Milne - Central Districts

Mitchell Santner - Northern Districts

I swear they toured last year and played ODIs as well

Lambs to the slaughter type situation for NZ in India....

They should take ish sodhi and another spinner for the tour which worked for them in the WT20 last year.
Watling who play spin well should also be included I guess

WOW. India really leading the way with the most JAMODIS. Big chance for Dhoni to get to 10k runs asap.

Dhoni's record is incidental. We are looking forward to building up the team for the next WC and more ODIs would only help that cause. Reduce the T20s and increase the ODIs if possible (I know that is not happening though)

In our next visit to England we are playing only 3 ODIs. I would have hoped to have more but England played just 3 ODIs earlier this year I guess so that is fine.

India should have a preliminary wc squad ready by the time we play those ODIs and test out the combination. If there are any tweaks to be made there is still a year to work on it. All these JAMODIs we play now should aim to achieve that goal.

Why didn't they just do a 3 team tournament with Australia and New Zealand? Or there's not enough appetite for the crowds/TV to watch neutral games?

Even the games involving India is not having pack house, so games involving neutrals would barely have any crowds.

Todd Astle and Glenn Phillips are in line to make their ODI debut after being among the six players added to the New Zealand squad for the three-match series against India, beginning in Mumbai on October 22.

Besides Phillips and Astle, Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and George Worker will join the national team after the conclusion of the series between India A and New Zealand A in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Star batsman Kane Williamson will captain the Black Caps on the India tour comprising three ODIs and as many T20 Internationals.

New Zealand had earlier picked only nine members for the ODIs and had to pick the remaining six after assessing the performance of the players taking part in the A tour.

Astle has been picked for the ODIs ahead of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, who remains part of the T20 squad. The 31-year-old has two First-Class hundreds to his name besides 312 wickets and has played two Tests and as many T20s for New Zealand.

Phillips meanwhile has shown decent form in the ongoing series against India A and scored an unbeaten 140 in the second unofficial ODI on October 10.

Following the conclusion of ODIs, senior batsman Ross Taylor and George Worker will head back home.

The nine members of the squad arrived on Friday and will play two warm-up games before the ODI series opener.

New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen, who is also manager of the A team, said Astle and Phillips grabbed their spots through both domestic form and their performances for A team.

“Todd has been one of the best white-ball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and hes backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A. Todd brings all round skill to the squad, quality leg spin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat,” said Larsen.

“Glenn has made an immediate effect in domestic cricket and has certainly taken his opportunity over here with NZ A, including an outstanding 140 not out. Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 were picked.

“Its widely accepted that India in their own backyard is the toughest challenge in cricket, so well have to be at our best,” Larsen added.

ODI squad: Kane Williamson (c), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, George Worker.

T20 squad: Kane Williamson (c), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Tom Bruce, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee named the Indian Cricket Team for the three-match One-Day International series against New Zealand.

There were quite a few changes made in the Indian ranks. Ravichandran Ashwin still hasn't found place in the squad, with Ravindra Jadeja facing the axe too. Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav were withdrawn as well, with Dinesh Karthik and Shardul Thakur making comebacks.

Also, batsman KL Rahul, who was part of the five-match ODI series against Australia, has been dropped from the 15-member squad.

The team is as follows
Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shardul Thakur.

Here is the schedule for the three-match series
1st ODI - Oct 22, Mumbai

2nd ODI - Oct 25, Pune

3rd ODI - Oct 29, Kanpur

Shikhar Dhawan, Dinesh Karthik and Shardul Thakur returned to India’s 15-man One-Day International squad, announced on Saturday (October 14), for the three-match series against New Zealand later this month.

Making way for the three were KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, while there was still no room for R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in the Indian 50-over side.

Rahul, in excellent form in India’s recent Test matches, has struggled in the ODI format in the few matches he has played this year. Against England in January, he played three games as opener, and had a top score of 11, while against Sri Lanka in August, when he was pushed down the batting order, his best effort was 17 in three innings.

Dhawan was always expected to slot right back into the squad after having missed the ODIs against Australia – which India won 4-1 – because of his wife’s surgery. He came back to the side for the three-match Twenty20 International series, which ended 1-1 after the final fixture in Hyderabad was washed out on Friday.

Karthik, meanwhile, was in good run-scoring form in the Duleep Trophy 2017-18 in September and during the limited-overs tour of the Caribbean earlier this year, and has been called up as an additional middle-order option. The others there are Virat Kohli, the captain, Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni, while Ajinkya Rahane remains in the mix as the third opener along with Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

Shami, who featured in just one ODI in the Australia series – in Bangalore, when he went for 62 runs in ten wicketless overs as India lost by 21 runs – and Umesh, who gave a much better account of himself in the same Bangalore ODI with returns of 4 for 71, were largely surplus to India’s requirements at home in ODIs.

With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah the top frontline pace choices and Pandya around as the fast-bowling allrounder, Thakur has been drafted in as back up after turning out in two games during the tour of Sri Lanka where he returned 1 for 26 in seven overs and none for 48 in six respectively.

Ashwin and Jadeja, India’s best spin choices in Test cricket and regulars in the limited-overs sides till recently, have been out of the frame in ODIs and T20Is since the tour of Sri Lanka, when Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal were picked as the main options. With the three spinners doing well since then, Ashwin and Jadeja continued to be left out in the cold.

Squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma (vice-capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur.

Virat Kohli warns against burnout due to hectic schedule

To get an idea of how much cricket the Indian team has been playing, one needs to look at the number of games Virat Kohli’s side has featured in since the Champions Trophy final in June. They played a Test series in Sri Lanka and in all have 15 ODIs and four T20 Internationals under their belts in a span of four months. Add to this the travel days and training and it is easy to see why the team has hardly got a breather.

Just over a week after the ODI series against Australia ended, India will be playing New Zealand — a team which has not played a game since the Champions Trophy. New Zealand won’t have any burnout issues in this series which comprises three ODIs and three T20s.

On the eve of the first One-day International at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, rest and recuperation and the importance of staying fresh was a topic Kohli spoke about. India’s head coach Ravi Shastri had, in a video conference with the Committee of Administrators, red-flagged the non-stop cricket the team was playing.

On Saturday, Kohli said both the batsmen and bowlers would have to be rotated in order to ensure that they don’t burn out with overseas tours, including those to South Africa and England lined-up for next year.

“Yes, we have spoken about the schedule, it’s become quite hectic. That’s something we will definitely have to sit and discuss in future. Because, if you look at New Zealand, they haven’t played any cricket after Champions Trophy. There has been such a good lay off. It can be the difference in doing well in a big tournament and performing poorly,” Kohli said.

“Everyone needs time to come back, especially the fast bowlers. So we are doing that now with Umesh (Yadav) and (Mohammad) Shami. We want them fresh for a Test season coming up. We don’t want overtired players and that’s something we have spoken about already. Even some of the key batsmen will definitely get some rest in the future weeks because of the importance of the away tours coming up. So we will have to figure out ways to do that. But it’s certainly a thing that we need to discuss for the future as well,” he said.

The Indian captain said that the expectations around the team were always of a high standard but players would not be able to consistently perform unless they got enough ‘rest’ and ‘time to prepare’.

“We are expected to perform on a consistent basis. But I think the rest and time to prepare should be adequate for all. This should not be an area where players are changed according to form, you need to look at all aspects in terms of how many games you are playing, how much rest you are getting,” Kohli said.

Ashwin, Jadeja question

Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal have been bowling so well that the Indian captain admitted that he was tempted to field them in all games. The Indian captain also said that he was happy that the youngsters who had been given chances had stepped it up and have ensured that India have a strong pool of bowlers, including Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

“Ashwin and Jadeja have played for 6-7 years of limited overs cricket for us regularly. These youngsters have stepped up, it creates a strong pool for us before World Cup.”

It is strange that Virat talks about player burn out but he keeps playing the same players in all the games.

Rookie Hyderabad pacer Mohammed Siraj was rewarded for his good show for India A during a recent tour of South Africa and matches against New Zealand. Siraj was picked for the T20I series against New Zealand while prolific Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer was also included in the squad. Iyer has been a consistent performer in the past one year or so, playing for Mumbai and India A and also had an impressive Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2016, playing for Delhi Daredevils. He scored a double hundred earlier this year in a warm-up game against Australia along with a match-winning hundred in the final against South Africa A in the summit clash of an away tri-series.

Siraj and Iyer were the two new faces in the Indian T20 squad announced on Monday for the three-match series against New Zealand starting November 1. Despite speculation, skipper Virat Kohli has decided against taking rest from the New Zealand leg and the first two Tests against Sri Lanka, starting November 16. The first two Tests against Sri Lanka are to be held in Kolkata and Nagpur. However, chairman of selectors MSK Prasad indicated that a "rotation policy will be applicable" for the captain as well.

It is expected that Kohli will be rested for the final Test and the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka, which is slated in December as he would be required fresh and re-energised before the tough tour of South Africa.

There are no surprises in the Test squad with Abhinav Mukund making way for a fit-again first-choice opener Murali Vijay. Vijay did not take part in the last Test series against Sri Lanka due to hand injury and some other fitness related issues.

Predictably, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja made a comeback in the longer version with Kuldeep Yadav being the third specialist spinner.

Senior speedsters Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma are back in the squad for the five-day format along with Test specialists Cheteshwar Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha.

Ashish Nehra, who will retire after the first T20 game on November 1, has been picked for only that game scheduled in his home ground of Delhi.

Squad for T20: Virat Kohli (captain) Sharma, Dhawan, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ashish Nehra (only 1 game)

Test Squad (2 matches): Virat Kohli (captain), KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandra Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Mohamed Shami, Unmesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma.

Why think about things you can't control and let your BP rise? lol.

Let him be there.

Maybe by some stroke of luck, he may even play in SA.

And we know what's going to happen then.

Wouldn't be surprised if Rahane or Pujara had a bad series verus Sri Lanka and Rohit replaced them in SA. For India's sake hopefully that doesn't happen.

Pandya is quite average while playing good fast bowling. Only targets spinners for big hits.
