Gary Stead will lead the BLACKCAPS coaching staff, alongside batting coach Luke Ronchi and bowling coach Jacob Oram.

Sri Lankan spin maestro Rangana Herath, who was part of the coaching staff for the recent Tests against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, will continue his role as spin-coach for the India series.

The squad departs for India on Friday, ahead of the 1st Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru starting on October 16.

BLACKCAPS Test tour of India:

1st Test – 16-20 October, M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
2nd Test – 24-28 October, MCA Stadium, Pune
3rd Test – 1-5 November, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Kane Williamson will delay his departure with the BLACKCAPS Test squad for the three-Test series against India due to a groin strain.

Williamson experienced groin discomfort during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will require a period of rehabilitation before joining the squad in India.

BLACKCAPS selector Sam Wells said the plan was still for Williamson to play some part in the three-Test series which starts in Bengaluru next week.

"The advice we've received is that the best course of action is for Kane to rest and rehabilitate now rather than risk aggravating the injury," said Wells.

"We're hopeful that if the rehabilitation goes to plan Kane will be available for the latter part of the tour.

"While it's obviously disappointing to not have Kane available from the start of the tour, it provides an opportunity for someone else to play a role in an important series."

Uncapped Auckland Aces batter Mark Chapman will join the squad as cover for Williamson.

Chapman, who has become a mainstay in the BLACKCAPS white-ball sides, averages 41.9 in first-class cricket, with six centuries, including 114 for New Zealand A against India A at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in 2020.

He featured in three of the Aces Plunket Shield fixtures last summer, notching 245 runs at 40, including 123 against the Otago Volts in Dunedin in February.

Wells said Chapman possessed the right skillset for Test cricket in the sub-continent.

“We believe Mark is one of our best players of spin and has a proven track-record in the sub-continent,” said Wells.

“Mark has displayed an ability to play spin proactively in the international arena, and combined with his excellent first-class record, we see him as someone who can succeed in the type of conditions we expect to encounter in India.”

Allrounder Michael Bracewell will travel with the squad for the first Test in Bengaluru before returning home for the birth of his second child and will be replaced by Ish Sodhi for the remainder of the series.

The remainder of the squad is unchanged from the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, with Tom Latham leading the side for the first time as full-time Test captain.

Anyone but Prasidh 'Scattergun' Krishna, please!

It will take a big effort from Kiwis to draw games here. The first innings will be key , If Kiwi batters do not give wickets to Indian pacers early , they have a chance to get big totals and put Indians under pressure.

Ezy 3-0 for India. New Zealand are finished. The sooner they start rebuilding their team, the better.

Anyone but Prasidh 'Scattergun' Krishna, please!
I agree but maybe management sees something we don't know? Let's wait and see. Before injury he did bowl well. But lmao the way he bowled in SA helpful wickets was atrocious. I am also skeptical but management has been making some good decisions off late. I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

New Zealand is a pretty non-serious team when it comes to test cricket. Expecting another dominating series from India.

There is no new opener in reserves too even though rohit may not make it up for 1 or 2 test matches in aus.it means kl may open and sarfaraz will be in at 5 as safety option rather than trusting a new opener

There is eeshwaran who seems good ish

And paddikal

Is India taking NZ lightly? Series is starting in 48 hour's but all the talk only about BGT.

India are favorites but I hope NZ will win a game or two. NZ are a very likeable team.

Agreed. It does feel that way. The massive hype machine for the Australia tour is overtaking everything. We're definitely at risk of taking this tour lightly and hitting a banana peel in one of the tests. We haven't chosen big spinning tracks either so New Zealand will have a chance of nicking one if get overconfident.

For NZ to win a test matches in India they have to dominate most of rhe sessions which is very very hard.

In india all 11 players are match winners .

NZ is a very likeable side. However, they couldn't win series even against minnow opponents like PAK and BD in Asia.

Very tough for the nice guys.

It's unlikely yes but if India stupidly tries to 'Bazball' out of overconfidence and collapses in an innings, it can take one extraordinary innings to put a recovery in that test out of our reach. They have a few players capable of one extraordinary innings.

There's a time and place for the risks we took with the second Bangladesh test but most matches are won with steady old fashioned test cricket.

this will be a 2-0 or 2-1. I doubt India can sweep this series. NZ has tenacity to apply themselves and deny India a win and has bowlers to even inflict a defeat..

1st test is a potential washout. Heavy rain forecast on first 3 days.

NZ is always a competitive team and I hope we do not take them lightly otherwise we will suffer. Hope to see Sharma and Kohli make some runs they really need to get confidence ahead of the BGT.

Chinnaswamy has a very advanced drainage system. If rain stops, play can start quickly.

Having said that, i really want to see if this system actually works.

It is raining in Bangalore. If a lot of time in test is washed out, the match could be drawn. India could not conjure win against Kiwis just like they did against Bangla tigers. Still the team got valuable points in the match against BD in Kanpur, which could become handy.

Indian conditions are extremely familar to everyone due to IPL especially new zealanders, South africans, Australians.

I think if India win 3-0, they are certain to make the WTC finals even if they lose BGT. But 3-0 might be difficult with the weather and stuff.

If Bangalore's drainage is as good as advertised then I expect no more than 3 session of play washed out across 5 days.

It's been raining heavily here in Bangalore for the last two days. Forecast for the rest of the week is uncertain, and most of the sessions might get washed out. Chinnaswamy drainage system is one of the best, so I hope we will still get a result

Their not taking NZ lightly. Their just afraid of Australia and shaking in their boots atm.

Sears ruled out of India Tests | Duffy called in

BLACKCAPS pace-bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against India due to a knee injury.

Sears experienced pain in his left knee while training during the recent Test series in Sri Lanka and underwent scans in New Zealand last week.

His departure to India was delayed after scans revealed a tear to his meniscus and the first available medical consultation was sought in the hope that he might have been cleared. However, following the medical advice, the decision was made to rule him out of the series.

A plan on the best course of treatment and rehabilitation for the injury will be advised in due course.

Uncapped Otago Volts bowler Jacob Duffy has been called into the side as Sears’ replacement and will depart to India tomorrow morning.

Duffy, Otago’s all-time leading wicket-taker, has featured in six ODIs and 14 T20Is for the BLACKCAPS and currently has 299 First-Class wickets to his name.

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead said he was hopeful Sears would make a fast recovery.

“We’re obviously disappointed for Ben who made a strong start to his Test career during the home summer and offers a genuine pace option,” said Stead.

“It remains to be seen how long we’ll be without him for, but we’re hopeful his road to a full recovery will be a short one.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for Jacob who has been around Test the squad before.

"With three Tests ahead of us he has every chance of making his Test debut.

Stead said selecting players at a time when no domestic cricket was being played in New Zealand could be challenging.

"Jacob's recent experience playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship certainly pushed his place.

“His performances in white-ball cricket for the BLACKCAPS have always been impressive and we’re confident he'll be able to contribute if called upon.”

The Test series against India begins tomorrow at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

'Pressure on KL Rahul But Will Play Him': Parthiv Patel Shares Thoughts on Selection Dilemma Ahead of Second Test Against New Zealand

Team India suffered a shock defeat at the hands of New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday as the hosts were defeated by the touring Kiwis by 8 wickets.

Hometown boy KL Rahul couldn’t make an impact on the game as he was sent back to the hut for a duck and 12 runs respectively in the game. While Sarfaraz Khan learnt from his mistakes of a first-innings duck to come back strong with a 150-run showing in the second to support the Indian attempt back into the game.

Indian batter Shubman Gill, who sat the first Test out citing a stiff neck, could return for the second Test against the Kiwis, which could put the side in a tricky spot in picking between Rahul and Sarfaraz.

Former Indian opener Parthiv Patel, however, opined that the side would err on the side of Rahul despite Sarfaraz’s impressive knock. Team India have backed the wicketkeeper batter in red-ball cricket in recent times.

“The question will be whether Sarfaraz Khan will get to play or they will go with KL Rahul. I will still play KL Rahul, the way the team has shown faith in him. I am thinking like that based on how the team’s thinking has been,” the southpaw said.

Rahul batted at No.6 instead of the Number 3 position following the reshuffle in Bengaluru, as Virat Kohli came in when the team was one down in both innings.

“If you wanted, you could have made Rahul bat at No. 3 in this Test match but you said that you didn’t want to change his position,”

“Nothing to take from Sarfaraz’s knock, he made 150 runs for sure, but it’s the same situation as Mohammed Siraj or Akash Deep. There will definitely be pressure on KL Rahul but I would still play him,” Patel said.

Should really thrash NZ into a brutal 3-0 submission.
This is the type of arrogance that will end soon. Give it a few years when India is reduced to being a normal good team and we won't see such pre series predictions. Neither would there be a funeral with Shastri's voice stuck in his throat if India don't win a WC Final in India.

Indian cricket stakeholders' heads are in the clouds but it is not sustainable. We will surely see a shift in attitude in the coming years and it will be for the better. @gani999

I said "should" not "will". It wasn't a prediction. As a fan I want my team to thrash all and sundry and there's nothing wrong in that.

This “should” came from a position of arrogance and overconfidence. You can try to hide it now but it is too late.

If wanting your team to win 3-0 is arrogance , then you are the most arrogant megalomaniac on this forum .

Didn't you claim PAK are going to win 2-1 because natural forces are bending to your will? Lol

Former Pakistan cricketer, Basit Ali via his You Tube channel:

"Will India bounce back in the remaining two matches against New Zealand? I will say, Yes! We (Pakistan) won a Test after 3 years and 8 months. India, on the other hand, has lost only three Tests in the last one and a half years but has won all series. Pakistan has been losing Test series at home and look at our condition, we have to endure Pakistan's defeat at home.

Now that India has lost a Test, all the guns will be pointed at KL Rahul. Let's see how Gautam Gambhir tackles this. (Rahul) Dravid tackled it very well. Ahead of the Australia tour, this defeat has come as an eye opener for Gambhir."

Williamson to miss second India Test

Kane Williamson will not be available for the BLACKCAPS second Test match against India, as he continues his rehabilitation from a groin strain.

Williamson, who suffered the injury during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, will remain in New Zealand to continue working towards full fitness.

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead said that while Williamson was making progress, he wasn't yet ready to return to Test cricket.

“We're monitoring Kane and he's tracking in the right direction, but isn't yet 100% fit,” said Stead.

“We're hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test.

“We'll give him as much time as possible to get himself ready, but certainly continue to take a cautious approach.

The BLACKCAPS second Test against India begins on Thursday in Pune.

"Doesn't Matter One Bit": Gautam Gambhir's Fiery Take On KL Rahul vs Sarfaraz Khan Debate

ndia head coach Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday threw his weight behind under-fire batter KL Rahul, saying it's the team management's opinion that matters and not the criticism that he is facing on social media. Rahul was dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru and made 12 in the second essay as the hosts lost the game by eight wickets. But it appears Gambhir is ready to give him a long rope.

"Social media does not matter one bit. What the team management and leadership group thinks is very important. He is batting really well, had a decent knock in Kanpur (against Bangladesh on a difficult wicket," Gambhir told reporters on the eve of the second Test when asked about Rahul's place in the team.

Rahul had managed a 68-run knock in the first innings of the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh.

"I am sure he would be knowing that he has to score big runs and he has capability of scoring runs. That's why he has been backed by the team...Ultimately, everyone is judged. International cricket is all about being judged," Gambhir added.

Nevertheless, Sarfaraz Khan's maiden hundred in the first Test has made the job more difficult for Rahul, and the Karnataka man will look to get his act right in the second match should he play.

New Zealand lead the three-match series following their eight-wicket victory in Bengaluru.

It was a humbling experience for the mighty hosts who entered the series after completing a 2-0 sweep of Bangladesh including winning the Kanpur Test after a majority of the game was affected by rain.

"Cricket, sports are a big leveller. If we have enjoyed days like Kanpur we had to endure what happened in Bengaluru. We didn't show any intention to bat out the remainder of the two and a half days," Gambhir said of the defeat in Bengaluru where India were shot for 46 in the first innings, their lowest-ever total at home.

Pity if Sarfaraz sits out ....

Reports of Shami being able to bowl but probably will play one or two Ranji trophy game before BGT...

Which means high workload on Jasprit and not the best buildup - given v r playing 7 tests are going to take place over the next 8 odd weeks , roughly a test per week.

i reckon Akash for Siraj and Washi/Akshar for Kulli will be the only changes, Gill will sit out and Sarf will continue with KL on notice and another failure will mean his non selection for Mumbai test and BGT - What do the great minds think?

Wishful thinking....but then thats your prerogative...

A possibility also exists that the new crop of guys might be better than the current ones and possibly reach even greater heights.

Tom Latham addressed the media on the eve of the second Test against India at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium:

"I guess whatever we're presented with, it's about, for us, trying to adapt as quick as we can; that's something that we can't control with the wicket."

"So it's about trying to go out there and adapt as quick as we can, and if it's going to be a wicket that turns a little bit more, then we've obviously got four spinners in our line-up, so fingers crossed that will play into their hands, but yeah, as I said, it's about trying to adapt on the run, and try not to go into the game with too many preconceived ideas."

Williamson to miss final India Test

Kane Williamson will not travel to India for the third Test in Mumbai to ensure he his fit for the upcoming three-Test series against England.

A cautious approach will instead be taken which will see Williamson continue his groin injury rehabilitation in New Zealand ahead of the first England Test starting at Hagley Oval on November 28.

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead said Williamson had made good progress, but the cautious approach would give him time to be fully fit for the England series.

“Kane continues to show good signs, but isn’t quite ready to jump on a plane and join us,” said Stead.

“While things are looking promising, we think the best course of action is for him to stay in New Zealand and focus on the final part of his rehabilitation so he’ll be good to go for England.

“The England series is still a month away so taking the cautious approach now will ensure he is ready for the first Test in Christchurch.”

The BLACKCAPS third Test against India begins on Friday in Mumbai.

Delhi seamer Harshit Rana's promising domestic season took an exciting turn on Tuesday as he was called up to join India's squad for the third Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai

The 22-year-old Delhi fast bowler, who impressed in the ongoing season with both ball and bat, is likely to make his Test debut on Friday. He is set to miss the round four matches for Delhi and will be leaving for Mumbai on Tuesday evening. The young pacer's call-up to the Test squad marks another step in what has been a rapid ascent in India's domestic scene. A day before India's recent series loss to New Zealand in Pune, he was also named in the 18-member squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

Rana's inclusion comes after a stellar performance in Delhi's Ranji Trophy third-round match against Assam, after being released from his role as a travelling reserve with the national team to gain match practice.

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Rana showcased his all-round abilities, claiming a five-wicket haul - his second in First-Class cricket - and scoring a valuable half-century (59). His efforts helped Delhi secure a commanding 10-wicket victory and earn a crucial bonus point.

His pace and precision caught the selectors' attention, earning him a place in India's T20I squad against Bangladesh. Although he didn't make his debut in that series, Rana continued to prove his potential.

India, down 2-0 in the series, will eye a consolation win in Mumbai before leaving for the all-important Australia tour.

India need to win this final test here and 3 tests in Australia to qualify for WTC Finals?

Easy task

Ajaz Patel told the media after New Zealand’s training session:

“India still have the wood on us when it comes to playing on turning wickets, and traditionally, the Indian batters have done well in turning surfaces.”

“Obviously, they haven’t had maybe as much success as they would have liked in this series so far but they’re certainly an opposition that is very, very skilled and not the easiest to come up against.”

“Their skill set is very vast and for us as a spin group, especially it’s about being able to control what we can control and making sure that we can apply pressure for long periods of time and making sure that we’re delivering the best balls on a given surface.”

“It is really about continuing to challenge them. As a batter, it’s not easy out there when you’re facing a ball that’s turning as much, and so it’s about us making sure we put the balls in good areas for long periods of time.”

“On the flip side, India have got phenomenal spinners so our batters are trying to do the opposite and they’re trying to create opportunities to score runs.”

“Being back in Mumbai is always quite special and it’s a place I call home as well. Having the opportunity to play out here again is quite special. To be honest, after my 10-wicket haul, I wasn’t sure whether I’d get another opportunity to play out here again throughout my career.”

“To be honest with you my memory is very poor so I don’t exactly remember the surface that well but one thing I do remember was it looked a lot drier to start with.”

“It’s (about) looking at what roles you’re playing for the team when it comes to a bowling perspective.”
“Mitch (Santner) was bowling exceptionally well from the other end so for me it was really important that from my end while I’m still trying to take wickets, I’m also performing the holding role and trying to restrict as many runs as possible so that pressure doesn’t come back on us."

“The way Mitch was bowling, there was no real need for me to try too many things. It was about trying to keep it as simple as possible. Once again, going into a new surface and a new game that may completely flip again.”

It's just weird that Nz has done better in spinning tracks then the Indian side. Surely India will make a comeback in last match.

Adapting to Mumbai pitch key to NZ hopes of whitewash, says Stead

New Zealand's chances of delivering a famous series whitewash in India will depend on how well they adapt to the Mumbai pitch, coach Gary Stead said.

The tourists thrashed India by eight wickets in the series opener in Bengaluru before winning the second match in Pune by 113 runs on Saturday, ending their opponents' home streak of 18 successive series triumphs stretching back to 2012.

The last time India were blanked in a home series was in 2000 when they lost 2-0 to South Africa.

"A series win in itself is incredible, but what we want to do is keep trying to get better every game, and we're going to different circumstances now," Stead told New Zealand media.

Another victory would improve the Black Caps' chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year he added.

However, Stead highlighted the challenge of getting accustomed to the Wankhede Stadium's red clay pitch after playing on black soil surfaces in the two opening victories.

India beat New Zealand by 70 runs at the venue in the semi-finals of last year's Cricket World Cup and thrashed them by 372 runs when they met there in the longest format in 2021.

"The red clay is very different, so we're going to have to adapt quickly," he added. "Our next two trainings are going to be important but for the WTC itself, there's no doubt one more win would certainly help us."

New Zealand, who won the WTC title in 2021, are fourth in the standings and must beat India and overcome England in three tests at home next month to boost their hopes of finishing in the top two.

"The first time we were in the situation of qualifying for the first WTC final, we had to win four tests on the bounce and we managed to," Stead added.

"Hopefully that's something we can lean on and say, 'we've done it before, here's an opportunity to perhaps do something very special again'."

It's just weird that Nz has done better in spinning tracks then the Indian side. Surely India will make a comeback in last match.

India look to move on from the low point of New Zealand loss

India's assistant coach Abhishek Nayar stated that the atmosphere remained positive in the India camp despite the series loss to New Zealand.

After experiencing a 113-run defeat to New Zealand in the second Test in Pune, India lost the three-game series 2-0. This loss ended their exceptional 12-year unbeaten run at home, which had seen the side win a record 18 Test series in a row. Despite this shocking loss, the India side was looking to regroup ahead of the final game.

Speaking to media ahead of the final game in Mumbai, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar stated that the mood in the camp was upbeat.

"Well, I think when you play this sport for long enough and you've been involved in it, you understand there are going to be downers," Nayar said. "There are going to be times when you don't do so well. We all understand it's a sport. We are going to win most times, lose sometimes and the losing will be emphasized but we know it's part of the game. So we just go out smiling and give our best."

Nayar looked to India's recent white-ball turnaround, wherein the side overcame the heartbreak of a home Men's Cricket World Cup final loss in 2023 to win the Men's T20 World Cup in Barbados this year, for inspiration.

"We saw that losing the World Cup in India was a low point in Indian cricket for everyone but then a couple of months later we were world champions. That's how legacies are created. So I feel that sometimes having something like that and then from here moving on and doing great things is part of the legacy of a cricketer and a team. So hopefully we can be part of creating something as special as that in the future.”

“The atmosphere is great, still a lot of jokes and bubbly cricketers in the dressing room and as you watch you will see our sessions filled with fun and nothing has changed."

Nayar addressed questions about India's batting collapse from the previous Test in Pune, where the team slipped from 96-1 to 245 all out in the second innings, defending India's approach with the willow.

“That tends to happen in this game of cricket. Like I said, sometimes it is the mindset. It may not be perceived from the outside as trying to be aggressive or trying to have intent, but intent is not necessarily swinging at the ball.

"Intent is more about your approach towards the ball. So when people talk about positive cricket or when we talk about positive cricket or playing with freedom, it's not about going and swinging every ball. It's about having the intent of playing the ball to score a run. And then if you don't feel it's not a ball you're going to score a run, you defend it."

With the upcoming crucial tour of Australia where India plays 5 test matches, the role of premium pacer Jasprit Bumrah becomes crucial.

The right-arm fast bowler has already featured in all four of India's home Tests this season, and Nayar answered queries around how India planned to manage the pacer's workload ahead of the big Australia tour.

“With Bumrah, I think in the two test matches he's bowled around you know 20-25 overs, so he's not bowled a lot. Yes, there'll always be a thought process about his workload also we played two games where we've not had five-day cricket.

"It's been more three and a half days, so we've got ample rest but Bumrah is very important to us and the workload will always be something on our mind.”

India will now face New Zealand in Mumbai for the third and final Test of the series, set to begin on November 1.

Sour grapes much? Learn to appreciate opponent.

You can't fluke a Test win. That too back to back Test wins.
