Lets hear what Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mickey Arthur need to do in the second ODI to turn things around.

Replace Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez with Imam ul Haq and Harris Sohail.
That will be step in the right direction as you will get rid of two complete failures in this format. Azhar Ali should be playing just tests for the moment and Hafeez domestic cricket and even that I am not so sure...

Haris sohail is good batsman against the pace bowling, should replace Hafeez in next match. Azhar and Ruman need to perform, both looked ordinary in 1st odi.

Micky is as bad as Inzamam and will play same squad and result will be same.

Only change should be Haris for one of Shoaib/Hafeez.Neither of them can bowl and Haris is better in foreign conditions.

Azhar and Hafeez out. Raees out too preferably. If we win the toss, I'd like us not to think of ourselves as superhuman and go with whatever the conditions suit us with.

We often start a series slowly so let's spare the wrist slitting however there's no doubt our batting is underpowered compared to NZ.

Hafeez doesn't merit a place as a specialist batsman and should be replaced for Haris Sohail which would be the one change I'd make.

I'd also have Hasan Ali taking the new ball as he's more likely to dismiss their two dangerous openers early than Rumman Raees whose variations can be more useful during the middle overs.

Harris in for Hafeez PLEASE by the next match before its too late! Hafeez without bowling is useless.

Haris is must in this mediocre lineup though it won't change the result of match but he is much better than likes of azhar hafeez and malik

Imam and Haris should play,
Players should think very carefully before using a review,
Sarfraz must take any catches that are offered.

I feel Mohammad Hafeez does not bat good if he is also not bowling. If thats the case then I would drop him although his replacement Haris Sohail is also not that good.

Drop Hafeez for Haris Sohail, who is a better batsman and can bowl a few overs too.

Hafeez should be dropped forever, not only this match

He had the chance to gracefully retire after CT glory and his brilliant fifty, it seems to me no senior Pakistani cricketer likes that way instead they want to be publicly abused, humiliated and forcefully left out of the squad then cry about no farewell

Need to remove Raees, Azhar and Hafeez.

Thanks to Inzi we don't even have an extra pace bowling option in the squad.

Pakistan's problem is that they never get their best batsmen on the field. It is always seniority over merit. The reason Hafeez and Azhar will get another chance.

There will probably be no change in the XI,but I would like to see Haris Sohail given a go in place of Hafeez and Imam in place of Azhar.

Azhar our Imam in
Hafeez out Haris in

I’ve pondering whether the management believe that Faheem is a capable third seamer or not. He’s a better bowler than Rumman but I’m still not convinced that he can make that third seamer sport his own.

Faheem bowled pretty well today. Don't forget he was continuously bowling AGAINST the wind while golden boys Amir and Hasan were only bowling with the wind. Coming from Lahore or Sharjah to these conditions without much preparation is not ideal as Rumman and Faheem clearly showed today. They still bowled well to their credit.

Amir and Hasan needs to share the new ball if we want wickets in first 6 overs. I don’t think Rumman suitable for new ball in these conditions.

Azhar/hafeez one needs to sit. Batsmen needs to show courage and play their shots rather sitting ducks.

If we drop azhar hafeez should open n haris in position of hafeez

I agree with your point of view.
And maybe Rumman can cash in with the old ball, once he doesn't have the burden to open the bowling.

Azhar Ali needs to go, not sure why he's come back into the team when we had Imam ul-Haq doing not bad along with Umar Amin.

Hafeez should not be playing, living off the innings of the semi-final and the final when the platform was set for him. He is a terrible top order batsman unless it's a flat pitch and the ball not doing anything. Replace him with Haris Sohail who can at least bowl a couple of overs if Fakhar Zaman gets hit for a few.

Bowling wise I don't know what back option we have but it's okay for now, not going to judge Rumman Raees due to bowling into the wind.

Drop Hafeez [Haris], Raees [Yamin]...

Why do the coaching staff/captain continue to include Hafeez in the side when he can't bowl? He's a darn walking wicket.

Surely now is the time to bring in Yamin for Raees too. The poor man has been carrying the drinks for so long he's probably forgotten his a cricketer.

Azhar [Amad?]
Fakhar
Babar
Haris
Malik
Sarfraz
Faheem
Yamin
Shadab
Amir
Hasan

Rain is going to effect this game..over's will be lost (or even a wash out is possible)
but assuming this match is played , this is the almost the series decider for us , if we win this series comes alive our confidence will go up but a defeat and this could be a long long series for us and could get embarassing..
as far as i can remember nelson is a good chasing ground , ireland and bangaladesh chased 300+ in the world cup and with the rain factor we have to bat second..amir needs to swing the new ball , raees was bowling against wind he isn;t 125 kph bowler he bowls around 135 and will do better ..fahim could be tried to open the bowling ..
so against odds i am expecting pakistan to win this match ..

Haris is inexperienced.

Azhar has got to go - not only a failed ODI batsmen but a very selfish one. Imam should be in.

Sohail for Hafeez also makes sense, but that would be expecting too much for the seniority-obsessed Pakistani management

For a short term solution, I'll drop Azhar, open with MoHa & play Hari at 4, Yamin at 7. XI stands at

Moha, FZ, Babar
Haris, Sarfraz, Malik
Yamin, Shadab, Fahim
Hasan, Amir.

With strict threat to MoHa that he’ll be sent home next flight if he bats at less than 100 SR in PP (be it for 1 run, anything is better than 9 ball 1). Sorry to use harsh words, by Azhar is counter productive for the team.

MMHS ^ Loud and clear, but Man don't you think 2 pace all rounder plus a spin all rounder is over kill and I thought you are not fan of bits and pieces players.

Can't help -Ul Haq has picked only 3 pacers & the 3rd one is a liability with new ball, doesn't bat either. Yamin at least can swing the new ball for few overs and he increases the batting depth. In LO cricket, teams are built on combination & total player value, unlike Test, where you play best 4 bowlers for a given condition, 2 specialist openers, a WK on keeping merit & best 4 middle orders. Here you have to evaluate the player value like Raees's 10 highly risky overs, poor fielding & almost zero batting vs Yamin's even more risky 10 overs, but great hitting ability in lower half & much better fielding. Raees was 3rd/4th bowler in bowling ranks & no. 11 with bat - Yamin is 5th/6th in bowling rank, but definitely among top 5/6 in batting potentials.

In my line up, PAK batsmen has to factor that exchange (Yamin over Raees) - FZ doesn't need any instruction, while Babar needs to play exactly the role he is playing, Haris is quite capable at 4, Malik isn't selfish, neither Sarfraz - so, only suspect is MoHa and he must be given a good dose before being sent as opener. Between MoHa - Azhar, any given day I'll pick MoHa because guy is selfish & cunning, but not incapable - he can hit some crispy shots in PP, if he risks his wicket (to cover that you have that batting depth in my XI - playing out 50 overs won't be any issue for this XI, if MoHa goes for an Afridi symbolic innings) - Azhar is someone who doesn't hit a boundary through off side in 1st session of a Test, with only fielder in front of him is a mid off!!!!

I am not for such all-rounders at all - you can check my assessment of Ul Haq's selection (NZ squad), but can't help. To play an specialist bowler, I can't pick Nawaz, while Raees isn't a new ball bowler - picking him & then open bowling with Hasan might be counter productive. A 4th pacer (& a back-up WK) was must - Ul Haq missed both, 10/11 (+ MoHa, Azhar) of the rest squad, probably most posters here would have picked, you don't need to play 20 years International cricket for that.

A little risky but let’s fly Kamran Akmal in like NOW! How many other Pakistanis have scored a double century in List A? He’s also done exceptionally well in National T20 Cup as well.

bowl fuller as well

Unfortunately CT win did more damage than good. It sealed the place for players like Hafeez, Azhar and even Malik for 2019 World Cup if not 2023. So we are doomed

Hafez definitely out. My team would be
Azhar
Babar
Haris
Sarfraz
Malik
Shadab
Faheem
Yamin / Nawaz
Amir
Hasan Ali
Ruman aka 124km/hr (Don't have any other fast bowler on tour, unfortunately)

People criticizing Rumman for bowling 124 kph need to understand how cricket is played. The ignorance is unbelievable.

Yeah right, let’s bring back Salman Butt as well.

Yeah right, let’s bring back Salman Butt as well.

We can, but only for Tests. Salman Butt is no pushover and would be a great opener if Kamran gets another chance in Tests as well with Azhar at #3. But this thread is about the 2nd ODI, let’s stay confined to that.

Still learning about his role lower down the Black Caps batting order, Henry Nicholls is keen to expand his knowledge in Tuesday's second one-day international against Pakistan in Nelson.

The New Zealanders began the five-match series with a 61-run win in the rain-affected opening match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Saturday.

Coming in at No.6, Nicholls made 50 off 43 balls, providing valuable back-up alongside Colin Munro (58) and Martin Guptill (48) to skipper Kane Williamson's 115 as the Black Caps set a daunting target of 315.

Pakistan were 166-6 after 30 overs when rain stopped play, well behind the 228 tally needed for a Duckworth Lewis win.

Nicholls was pleased enough with his fourth ODI half-century, but says there's still plenty of room for improvement.

"I think that was about my sixth or seventh time at No.6, starting in India over the winter," the 26-year-old left-hander said.

"I think each situation has been a little bit different, and that's something I really embrace, trying to use my skills to assess the situation and play accordingly."

Working on a mix of shots that include power and placement takes time, he added.

"For me, moving forward, it's trying to access that power game and the ability to clear the ropes, - just reading the situation in terms of what is requited at the time."

Nicholls expects Pakistan's bowling line-up to come back strongly at Saxton Oval in Nelson, and New Zealand will have to be adaptable to counter that.

He says adaptability will be key for the Black Caps, whether that means the middle order pushing the run rate up after a good start or consolidating if wickets are lost early.

"We're going nicely as a batting unit and it's important when we get to Nelson we keep that going and keep raising the bar."

Pakistan need to bat first in NZ. On wickets which are flat and boundaries small, allowing NZ to bat first means they will be chasing 270+ every game.

Am planning to boycott 2nd ODI if Hafeez is in the team. Just tired of the ongoing cussedness of our selectors and management. For years undeserving players keep getting selected and some deserving players are cruelly and inexplicably ignored.

Pakistan should chase whenever they win the toss. You can’t conquer your demons without facing them.

I really do hope Amir Yamin gets in for Hafeez.

Our pace attack
Mohammed Aamer
Hasan Ali
Rumman Raees
Fahim Ashraf
Amir Yamin

I can bet anything that not a single replacement will be made for the next match. Combination of team (winning or losing) should never be disturbed.

Hafeez needs to go as hes a useless batsmen and cant bowl. Sarfraz doesn't trust malik to bowl so ideally Haris coming in would bolster batting and bowling.

Unfortunately as much as i like him, Sarafraz is in terrible form with the bat latley other than his form vs Sri Lanka in CT he has not had a good innings at all. Very worrying

In that SL match it was a good innings, but he almost lost that match for us, the sri lankans failed to take the catch. Sarfraz really needs to improve his batting.. his wicket keeping isn't of a high standard either, only I believe he's a good captain on the field, but that's no use if he's not batting or keeping well.

Hoping to see him contribute in this series...

According to the TV Guide for Star Sports, it looks like the match will be Live on Star Sports Select 1.

Don't expect much from this mediocre batting lineup.Bowlers have to do all the hardwork!!

Pakistan players seem to be busy posing for fancy photos and not preparing to win a match.

So according to some reports, same team will be playing.

Expecting a good contest.

As expected from Mickey Arthur and Sarfaraz Ahmed...

We will go down 3-0 then they will think about making changes.

I can't believe Hafeez is still on the team. Even batsmen like Inzy, Yousuf, and Salim Malik have been dropped in the past and Hafeez is nowhere near anyone of them.

I will agree with the majority of what people are saying in that Pakistan should bat first but also drop Hafeez and Azhar. One's not good enough to play ODI cricket and the other isn't good enough to play cricket at all. Pakistan need to bring in Haris Sohail and Imam-ul-Haq, now sure Imam hasn't set the world on fire but it would be better than having slow & steady Azhar and undroppable, unreliable and unrequired Hafeez.

Dont think haris sohail will make a huge difference. Hafeez is good enough to get rubs in nz. He has scored runs in nz and sa . We pakistanis judge a player on one match . We cannot play an inexperienced line up. A mix of experience and youth is important
