Middle Overs is all about Wrist Spinners:

In this World Cup and ODIs in general, middle overs are controlled by wrist spinners, no amount of fast men or finger spinners can do the job. That's why India is firm favorite to win the cup.

You can see the stark difference in IND and AFG bowling innings, how they are controlling the game. Initially AFG spinners had issues, bowling too fast, not getting length right, but now they got hang of the conditions, plus more sun, means more trouble for Western teams :)

India Learned its lessons from CT

India Learnt his lessons from CT loss, it was blessing in disguise for India, they would have carried on with Ashwin/Jadaja type spinners for two more years, have the won the CT. After the loss, they threw finger spinners and Brought proper, full-time wrist spinners into their attack. This has transformed India into the most potent attack in the world right now. India's biggest advantage in not Kohli or Bhumra but KulCha, that duo is going to make life uncomfortable for all teams. And they have no apparent answers for them. They can take wickets, while been economical. Which hits you on two ends...Even Batting first, teams would have hard time scoring freely against these guys, you have to take risk constantly, which is a problem. Plus, in between you will get really difficult delivers to deal with...

Pakistan miss the boat for this WC

Pakistan has not invested in spinner since Ajmal is gone. Pakistan are happy to field 3/4 allrounders, most of them are rubbish players, other than Shadab, none are consider even decent spinners. Which is horrible strategy, spin should be our strength been an Asian side, you should have it.

Secondly, Pakistan is obsessed with PSL, which is filled with million left arm spinners, first off that is bad strategy, you want to give chances to more leg spinners, secondly, focus on domestic cricket. T20 will not give you proper batsman or spinner...Left arm spinner is an easy way out, but that is no subsitute of quality leggy...

Other problem is Management obsession with Yasir Shah, who is below average leg spinner. His only skill is to take fifer on day 4/5 in UAE pitches, rest of the places he is completely flat. He does not spin the ball, he pushes it through at pace, on day 4/5 wicket that fetches him LBW/bold but no flight or spin(googliee is missing as well) in his armory...

Below average leadership will not built strong team

You got to look else where and incentivize people to bowl leg spin...Next World Cup is in India, spin will be even more important. you got to get rid of this Rallo Katta Allrounder culture and invest in proper spinners as well as seamers...Making Immad Karachi King Captain, was worse idea came from Mickey camp, he should not be in any team, let alone Captain. His primary skill is darting, he is in the wrong business.

What I am hearing, people are talking about making him Captain, that would be far worse. We cannot making another non-playing Captain, who not only contribute nothing, but creates a bad culture... Sarfraz is not only an unfit guy, but he is not a performing wicket keeper batsmen. Rest of the world has either hard hitter keepers or proper batsmen like BD, we got worse of both worlds...You can never develop teams around such Captains, whose skills are either outdated or does not match requirements of top tier of international cricket. Immad would be again an horrible choice, you want to get rid of players like Immad, Hafeez,Malik, Sarfraz not make the top of the leadership circle, doing that means you are aiming for #7/8 rank team...Team should be built around quality players, not below average individuals... We have to invest in specialists not Ralloo Kattas!!

Been saying this too but what's the point anymore yasir as they don't learn or listen.

Our ex players and coaches don't seem to pay any attention to global cricketing trends. They're stuck in the past thinking we can still blow opponents away with our phaast bowling as if it's still the 1990s.

Unfortunately Yasir Shah did not perform as expected. He used to turn the ball prodigously in 2014-2015 and beginning of 2016 but has now become a gun barrel straight bowler.

Was Zulfiqar Babar a china man or regular left handed off spinner?

Imad wasim is holding us back .the reason he is preferred is his batting which is quite overrated .after the worldcup proper wicket taking spinner is needed for our odi squad .Won't mind umer khan if he lives up to expectations and don't fade away

Have been saying the same for a while now, but in fairness this World Cup legspinners have actually struggled and/or not been as potent as they had been in the build up to the World Cup.

Expect that will change as the weather improves.

I agree. I have been banging on about specialist spinners for months. We can see by the top teams success you need a leg break bowler. Usama Mir is a interesting option. Don't know of many options for leg break bowlers in domestic cricket.

We have none and to have wrist spinners you need a culture someone already in the national team doing wonders who youngsters wanna be like we had saeed Ajmal he was an offie but we had a culture at that time now there is neither talent left in Pakistan nor the culture so nothing is gonna change

Agreed but Pakistan isn't producing much in terms of white ball wrist spinners concerned.

Shadab Khan is average. He's good enough to defend 300+ targets as he did in the CT final and against England + SA in this tournament, but if he's bowling first or defending a lower total he'll struggle big time.

We need international cricket at home. It is like a circle. Cant just reply on the system alone to give you players.

Usama Mir should have debuted before Shadab but the PSL and fans and media pressure fast tracked the wrong leg spinner. Don’t get me wrong I too supported Shadab but as a nation we have always gone for short-term fixes. This is exactly why we are in the same situation after every WC. Rinse. Repeat. New people come in and end up making the same mistakes as people before them. It’s become a cultural habit as well as the norm due to heat that comes with not producing instant results. It’s a sad state of affairs.

According to Misbah-ul-Haq, we lack quality wrist-spinners in the country

Guys please name some of the promissing leg spinner we saw in domestic cricket from past few years. I can named few of them:

M Irfan
Shahzaib ahmed khan
Karamat Ali
Usama Mir
Mohd Mohsin
Zahid Mehmood

How many of these players were known prior to the t20 cup? Stop hating on Misbah

This. Regional coaches obviously were informed to persist with leggies in their playing xi as the national setup wants more options.

I am actually satisfied with the talent pool of leg spinners we have especially after observing a few leggies in this domestic t20 cup.

ISLAMABAD: Noting that Pakistan’s fast bowling department is no more strong, former Test pacer Sarfraz Nawaz on Wednesday predicted that the country’s spinners could play a significant role against Australia in the forthcoming Twenty20 and Test series Down Under.

Pakistan play Aussies in a three-match T20 International series starting on Nov 3 at Sydney. The two Tests will be staged in Brisbane (Nov 21-25) and Adelaide (Nov 29-Dec 3).

Speaking to Dawn over telephone from the UK where he is settled, the 70-year-old Sarfraz said the Pakistan spinners had the potential to surprise the Australian batsmen.

“If the Pakistani spinners get dry and supporting pitches they can create problems for the opponents,” reckoned Sarfraz. However, the legendary fast bowler added, if Australia prefer green pitches then there will be serious problems for the Pakistan batsmen.

Mohammad Abbas (14 Tests), Imran Khan (nine Tests) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (three Tests) along with uncapped young fast bowlers Nasim Shah (16 years) and Mohammad Musa (19) are part of the Pakistan squad for the Australia Tests.

Sarfraz, who played 55 Tests and 45 ODIs from 1969 to 1984, noted that Pakistan’s fast bowling department largely comprised new bowlers who lack Test match experience

“It will be difficult for the Pakistan pacers to do long spells of bowling with consistent line and length and speed in Test matches,” he said. “We lack [an] experienced fast bowler who can take match-winning five- or six-wicket haul in Australia. [Therefore], I think we will have to rely on spinners.”

Commenting on the country’s spin bowling department, the Lahore-born Sarfraz feels leg-spinners Shadab Khan and Usman Qadir along with slow left-arm spinner Imad Wasim will play lead role for the tourists in the Australia T20 matches.

Hailing the inclusion of 26-year-old Usman in the national squad, Sarfraz said, “He has good experience of playing cricket in Australia and good command of bowling flipper and googly.”

Sarfraz insisted that Pakistan would definitely need their experienced left-arm pacers Wahab Riaz (in break from Tests) and Mohammad Amir (retired from the longest format), to deliver good performance in Australia.

Giving his views on Pakistan’s Test series in Australia, Sarfraz said experienced Yasir Shah could be well assisted by uncapped slow left-armer Kashif Bhatti.

“Yasir should be Pakistan’s main weapon in the Test matches,” he reckoned.

Talking about the fast bowlers, Sarfraz predicted it would be tough for Pakistan’s inexperienced battery of fast bowlers to produce good results on a demanding tour of Australia.

“My best wishes are with them [fast bowlers]. Having said this, I would again say that our spinners could play the leading role,” he maintained.

When asked about the green-shirts’ chances of victory Down Under, he said there should not be big expectations from the new-look team.

“Since our team is new, we should not expect big victories from them in Australia. This team will take some time to settle. At the same time, I must say on their day, Pakistan players could surprise any opponents,” he emphasised.

The morale of the Australian team who drew the five-Test series 2-2 in England earlier this year to retain the Ashes must be very high, the ex-star bowler underlined.

“Australia have a strong side, it would be a difficult series for Pakistan,” he said.

To a query about Pakistan’s dismal performance in the recently-concluded home T20 series against an inexperienced Sri Lanka, Sarfraz said head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq should be given a free hand for at least three series.

“Misbah is focusing on developing a new-look team, which is a good sign for Pakistan’s future,” Sarfraz said.
