Not learning from mistakes: Pakistan AGAIN selects just ONE spinner for a UAE Test

Pace bowling factory expected to skittle the fragile Lankan batsmen. And you have the pink ball. What more do you want? :srini
 
lol this is a day and night test with the pink ball, 1 spinner is the right way to go
 
It doesn't matter if it's a day night match on this type of pitch spinners win matches.
 
Lets wait till the end of the day before we jump to conclusions

A sample set of 1 test match is nothing to base your test selection on. Pace is better than spin on flat pattas, both will go for runs on flat surface but still prefer pace to spin
 
It is beyond my basic understanding HOW AND WHY trundlers like Abbas can play over Asghar.

Exactly! The ONLY place where innocuous trundlers like Abbas would find SOME success would be in England on a green pitch in helpful, overcast conditions and I'm still doubtful about that. Don't understand why we have to keep up with harmless, dibbly dobbly, unfit "fast" bowlers like him with absolutely NO variation at all.

And yes, while I do agree that Hafeez would be successful here, I think he's not the man we want, despite him being the one we need as of now. He's not the future. We need fresh, young blood.

An awful lot of wrist slitting and that too very early into the match. At Abu Dhabi, we had one spinner playing and he did his job by setting up a total of 136 to win. It was the batsmen who failed us, not the fact that we didn't have another spinner. If we are going to select teams based on previous results from the past match, we should have dropped a fast bowler for another Batsman.

Both teams were bowled out cheaply mostly by spin in the last match already Yasir is looking a lot more threatening than the fast bowlers.

Abbas isn't an innocuous trundler.

I have not actually seen any match where Abbas has looked unthreatening. He's been creditable even when he's bowled on dead wickets.

I don't know what matches you've been watching if you thought Abbas looked threatening. I don't think he deserves a place in the XI despite the lack of fast bowlers. He is too ordinary. He can't swing it or seam it. There is absolutely no movement. He was hailed to be the next McGrath by most posters on this forum and quite frankly, he isn't even the next Ishant Sharma.

He doesn't have any variations. He isn't consistent with his line and length. And while he isn't wayward, at his subtle pace, my 90 year old grandma can push him around for singles.
 
Maybe after this test series loss all these wannabe test purists will finally start to see that there is no future in test cricket :))

Awful decision again - these UAE pitches just do not assist seam bowling. There's not enough swing, seam, pace or bounce to justify three pacers. Just compare the pace and spin bowling averages in UAE.

We have three spinners in the squad so not like we're short of options.
 
Mickey Arthur is the worst test coach we have had in our history. Even chai drinking Mohsin Hasan was better than him. If you think Mickey is any good you are biased by his coaching in LOI.
 
Another bad decision. If they were scared they needed another pacer because it's day-night should have included another spinner instead of a batsman if they didn't want to go with two pacers (though two pacers would have probably been fine).

In the past when we were successful we had basically three full time spinners in Ajmal, Rehman/Zulquifar and Hafeez (pre ban). And now we're down to one.
 
When did we ever learn? Answer is Never.. Always reactive never proactive. This test series we 'll lose 2-0 for sure..

Lol yes thats what im more concerned about. Its going to be the same sort of outcome in this game as well. Pakistan will match their batting in the 2nd innings and then the gripping spinners will truly come into the game. Once again we could end up with a low total to chase
 
Also, Sarfaraz losing this series could well go down to his inability to win the toss! Pakistan are much better suited piling on the runs in the first innings and slowly picking away through the rest of the match. The second time when Pakistan have had to bowl first when they really desperately would have liked to bat first!

It is. If we had 2 spinners we would have been chasing 36 runs and not 136 runs.

Ofcourse batting is also an issue but that doesn't excuse team selection

The whole team selection is a joke. I hope the players who aren't good enough are only picked again because they are sitting on the hot seat and it's either perform in this series or get out.

I never want to see shan massod in the Pakistani team anywhere unless he improves drastically. Asad Shafiq needs some rest while babar has to reevaluate whether he is a test level player.

It also tells you that Sarfraz has no input off the field. Sarfraz is usually someone who uses a lot of spinners and is good with spinners.

I back Mickey but there is a lot wrong with the team combination in this series. It all started with Azhar going back to nr 3.
 
Only reasonable explanation could be that the team management does not rate Asghar and Bilal Asif as proper spinning options and they haven't impressed in the nets which leads to questions as to why did Inzi select them then?

lol I'm not blaming him for it. It's just the unfortunate scenario. I really think losing today's toss was highly detrimental. This was the Test where Pakistan had to bat first and really pile on a huge total
 
The solution is so obvious. It's UAE, you will need a second spinner at some point especially an offie against the lefties. Secondly, having a 5th bowler is a must in these conditions.

Drop Shan Masood. Open with Azhar and bring in Hafeez, Fawad or Imad. Hafeez is probably the best option because you could bat him at 3 and he spins the ball the other way from Yasir. Not to mention, his strength is getting lefties out.
 
At this moment in time we could well do with 4 spinners. Nothing seems to be getting through these Sri Lankan batsmen
 
I was also shocked to see just one specialist spinner operating in these conditions. And why would they pick 3 pacers? That too out of form Amir and inconsistent Wahab.
 
Two spinners and this series could've gone in an entirely different direction. Every run Sri Lanka is scoring is making me even more livid about this decision. Yasir has taken more wickets in this innings than all the pacers combined.

I don't buy this not rating Asghar or Asif argument - they've been involved in the national training camps all year, Asghar himself was on the West Indies tour, so that's more than enough time to assess whether they're good enough or not.
 
First mistake, playing only 4 proper bowlers
Second mistake, just 1 spinner

2 all rounders should've been included in this playing 11
Horrible selection decision, deserve to lose the series

End of story.

Don't over-analyze.

As of now, Arthur's only claim to fame is CT win. And if Lanka hadn't choked like school boys, Pakistan could have got eliminated from that tourney too and the perception would have been completely different. But to be fair to Pak and Arthur, they played like absolute champs in the next 3 knockouts and deserved to win that tourney.

Just goes to show how small things make a HUGE difference.

If Pak had picked an additional spinner last test, they would have chased 50 runs and their batting as poor as it may be, would have chased it.

Pakistan instead of a a series victory or a draw at worst is now staring at a loss and probably whitewash (if they don't handle pressure well and crumble in this test).

As they say:

Small hinges swing BIG doors.

Need to do predictive analysis- how does this match referee rotate the coin, which side of the coin weights more, what type of coin is being used....

perhaps hire a coach who can help

Ground control to ExpressPacer. I know we are in the age of fake news, but you can't claim that Abbas cannot do well outside England if he has just done well outside England. He's averaging 20 after bowling in the Windies and the UAE, the flattest, driest pitches imaginable.

He's been watching the matches we have all been watching. In which the best domestic FC bowler for some seasons now got conventional swing, reverse swing, bowled cutters, bouncers, took a 5 fer and averaged 19 on some of the most unforgiving phattas in the world.
 
The simplest explanation is Mickey Arthur is a highly mediocre coach who doesn't who what he is doing.

Asif is bang mediocre

But Asghar can do the job easily. And it's not like in domestic we don't have decent upcoming options

I'd even take Zulfi freakin Babar at this point
 
What's the point of day and night tests when tests in UAE conditions itself are boring as hell.. SA and England are the only two countries where tests are fun to watch other countries need to make conditions like over there else tests would be as boring as ever..

NZ is good but time zone is bad so can't watch as an Asian..

Australia was supposed to be great in 90's, 2000's but not they have also been lately producing flattish tracks and that charm of WACA bounce and pace has disappeared..

India and UAE I find pretty boring even in last two days.. Maybe because there is no fight in today's batsmen against spin on rank turners..

Agree with WI and SL.. Dead crowds, bad pitches, bad teams, sleepy commies makes for a boring spectacle
 
In these conditions your third pacer should be an all-rounder and then you play another spinner who can bat a bit.

Any of Imad/Shadab/Bilal should have played.

These averages against #7 and #8 ranked teams are misleading. His mediocrity on display is for everyone to see.
 
Very surprised by this rubbish selection. I like Mickey Arthur a lot but this was a blunder. 1st match so many part timers turned their arms over on a similar pitch and yet PCB still went with 3 pacers. Asghar was in the squad for a reason and bad selection leads to results like this

They may or may not be misleading but the question was whether he could do well outside England.

'For everyone to see' actually means, there is little to no evidence to be seen.
 
This was the biggest reason we are losing this series
