Out-of-favour veteran South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs has no regrets about the "bunch of animals" remark directed towards the Pakistani fans during a Test at Centurion in 2007 but said by no means he was a racist.

"All of us Proteas were getting pretty irritated and unfortunately the stump microphones picked up our displeasure. I was standing at gully, Graeme Smith was at slip and we were both looking at these morons. We agreed that a little verbal retaliation as in order. 'Stop acting like a bunch of fu****g animals!' I said. I can't remember what Graeme said," the 36-year-old right-handed batsman wrote.

Go and stand in front of a mirror to see a real animal.

and who is he? son of evolution. grand child of a bacteria.

Looks like he has used all the dirty gimmicks in the world to ensure his book goes off shelves quickly.

Don't think he is a racist, just a very stupid person who thinks he is above the law.

He turns out to be even more pathetic after having a moan about everything in his book. You can only pity the guy and not take a spolit brats comments seriously.

read the whole article you idiots. There's a second page

"You could call me many, many things, but a racist was a bit of a stretch, to say the least. Especially concerning Muslims. I'm coloured, for goodness' sake. I've got four Muslim aunts and about 10 Muslim cousins. How could I be racist? My damn family is Muslim," he wrote in the book.

He can have 20 muslim uncles, 35 muslim aunts, 2 muslim brothers-in-law and 83 muslim cousins. If he said Effing Pakistanis get back to the zoo, he is a racist. Muslim does not equal Pakistan.

And no need to call others idiots. Just reflects back on you yourself.

I forgot to add that he is just butt hurt that he got kicked out of the team and is not even allowed to play again. he is trying to take the ship down along with him. Obviously his teammates well ex-teammates understand this fact and are brushing it off of their shoulders treating him like a piece of dirt he is.

Has he played with hashim amla?

Im sure as soon as amla came in this disgusting racist thing SA had going on faded away

Not sure what Smith has does done to deserve such wrath of Gibbs :)) He claims they are good friends but he practically has implicated Smith in team politics and now this. :))

Couldn't have said it better myself

wrong time to comment now. pak players will surley kill saffers now lmao!!

The guy always gets targeted by pakistan fans. It happened in the wc t20 match at trent bridge. The full fox road stand packed with pakistan fans were throwing abuse at him calling him racist, which led to greame smith moving him into a different fielding position.

have always hated this guy...lol...but yeh SOME pak fans are moronic...look at SOME of the posters on this...and visualise what some of them would be like in the stands at a match

I'm sure the Pak. fans too would have no hesitation in calling Gibbs (and his family) all sorts of things.. :p

The SA left arm spinner (can't remember his name) was getting a fair bit of abuse from a group of 4 or 5 Pak fans, thats why Gibbs retaliated. Does not justify at all what he said, but everyone should know the background before judging.

On the other side of the argument, I think people are underestimating how bad fans can get, especially South Asian fans. Doubtless you guys know best but from what I have observed (second hand) I have no doubt some Pakistani fans can get very nasty, sometimes simply unbearable the way they get in someone's face.

I know from personal observation how bad some Indian fans can get; have enough personal experience of watching games in Delhi. Some of the things that I have heard out there would make any normal guy's blood boil....it was despicable....if someone said those things to me back when I was younger, to my face, someone would suffer a serious injury.

I know athletes are not supposed to react, but it does get very nasty out there at times.

I don't find anything wrong with his comments. What's wrong with telling the truth? We do behave like animals. Just take a look at the episodes of quetta incidents or a woman was just beaten by male security guards. We just don't know how to register our protests without burning buses and property and killing innocent people with firing.

Evidence speaks itself.

lol yeah....at least he didn't go towards any fan trying to hit with the bat or something. anybody remember the famous inzi "AALOOO" incident in Toronto.

For the record if a bunch of Pakistani fans are acting like idiots, I dont see anything wrong with his comment either. You have to understand it was just for a group fo fans and not generelization for all Pakistani fans..

Herschelle Gibbs faces legal action

Waise bhi Gibbs in trouble now ....:)

After facing legal action from Cricket South Africa, Herschelle Gibbs may now face the wrath of fellow players.

Tony Irish, chief executive of the South African Cricket Players' Association, told the Afrikaans daily Beeld that Gibbs could get into further trouble for his allegations against fellow cricketers.

"I have already spoken to Majola and there is a process which must now run its course," Irish said.

"Herschelle is still a contracted player and that is why it is also important to look at what he says in his interviews about the book," he added.

The CSA day announced that it had sought legal advice on the book and also issued a warning to players to decline from making comments.

"CSA has tasked its Legal Counsel to look into the matter and to advise us accordingly. Everybody concerned (including players) needs to wait for the outcome of CSA's processes which will be announced as soon as the Board has taken a view or a decision on the matter," CSA chief executive Gerald Majola had said in a statement.

"Before this happens and the CSA Board has taken a decision, all stakeholders should avoid expressing views ? that includes the players.

"I have not read the book and cannot comment on what is reported in the press," Majola said.

Gibbs made some damning statements in his book about sex orgies with fellow team members, as well as drug and alcohol abuse during tours.

He also claimed that captain Graeme Smith, all-rounder Jacques Kallis, wicketkeeper Mark Boucher and A B de Villiers were controlling the team, causing division among members of the side.

Smith publicly acknowledged from Dubai, where the South Africans are playing against Pakistan, that the team was "hurt" by Gibbs' revelations.

Kallis said he would welcome any action by CSA, with Gibbs confirming that his former teammates were upset to varying degrees.

"I understand Kallis is reasonably upset and that he would welcome any action against me by CSA," Gibbs told Beeld.

"Fortunately Boucher is not too angry. He has been through the book already and reckons it is not as serious as the media have made it out to be."

Former teammate Daryll Cullinan reacted angrily with a column in a local newspaper, rejecting suggestions in the book by Gibbs that he had split the beans on a marijuana-smoking session led by Gibbs during a West Indies tour.

Gibbs' has become a bigger celebrity than he was during his career as a star Proteas opener, with almost daily radio interviews and public speaking engagements being the order of the day as his book tops the lists in South Africa.

I don`t know the full facts about this incident but the matches i have been to the behaviour of our fans is shameful and disgusting. I went to watch a match at Trent Bridge in 2001 and the drunken behaviour was shocking and appalling. Apperently these guys had come from Oldham(don`t know if thats true) and they roughed up an old white guy because he was an aussie fan, which led my friend to comment that these guys were the best recruiting agents for the BNP he had ever seen. It was if the prison had been opened for the day.

The guy is just trying to get publicity for his autobiography - it is the oldest trick in the book

Forget about him. Why waste effort? He probably wont even play international cricket now, ever.

He is just assuring good sales in India by dissing Pakistanis in the book. :))

lol all ths south african players are all over him...... cheap shot at publicity

Gibbs has always seemed a bit "cookoos" upstairs seriously........

and he should be the last one labeling anyone an animal after all his antics....

wow "animals" thats a bit "rich" coming from mr Gibbs

Pakistani fans in Pakistan can be racist too. I remember going to an ODI between Pak and RSA where whenever Ntini came to the boundary there would be chants of "Kaala Hara**" He did not understand it but that does not make it any better.

Bumping up an old thread, and not defending Sarfraz at all, but it seems Gibbs' comments were far more sinister than Sarfraz's comment and atleast Sarfraz(or whoever on his behalf) wrote an apology. And again not defending Sarfraz a single bit, he should be punished, fined, banned, etc but his non-regretful years later seemed far appalling than Sarfraz's.

I know Gibbs said that his comments were towards rude Pakistani fans, but it didn't meant that he should've named and targeted the whole nation and he was let go with 3 match ban. Not sure if ICC changed and made the laws any more strict and if Sarfraz will face similar or more severe ban.

Wow I had no idea this guy was so racist heard about him being racist before, but this is just... ugh.

Excerpt from Gibbs' book...

Being singled out – “I mean, we all had something to say about those supporters on the day, but after listening to the recording, it was decided that mine was the one voice that they could identify. I listened to the recording later, at the hearing, and you could hear Graeme’s voice loud and clear. He still laughs about how he got away without being charged to this day. I guess I had to take one for the team.”

According to Gibbs’ autobiography, ‘To The Point’, Cricket South Africa supported him and the charges against him had even surprised the team manager Goolam Rajah, who had said him, “You’ve got Muslim family; how can they call you a racist?”.

I hope over the last nine years, Gibbs has learnt that Islam is not a race. So yes, you can definitely be racist to Pakistanis without being bigoted towards Muslims.

Hence glad Sarfaraz did not mention the SA players name in his tweet. What goes around comes around

Stump microphones should be removed from the game.

How many incidents and useless controversies could have been avoided over the years if they simply left the cricket players alone?

Some cricket players can avoid temptation to abuse and others are more emotional by nature.

When you are playing out on the field, you have so much energy being bundled within you and the slightest aggregation can cause a rabid response.

au contraire, if we have stump mics enabled then players will not indulge in derogatory behavior. They are playing in a playground- so they can't expect privacy.

Yes but is it necessary to have to hear everything they say?

Has any cricket fan stated that hearing the wicketkeeper saying “come on” and or “let’s go guys” adds a great deal to the viewing experience?

The players are adults and should be dealt with so if they make mistakes but picking up things like these in the midst of play and claiming it as an accurate representation of their character is downright wrong.

Stump Mike or not every one deserves respect

What does the second statement mean?

I am going to skip the last part about players being adult.
About viewing experience, that depends on person to person. For many, listening to wicketkeeper or other fielders will be unadulterated form of viewing. It is like standing in the ground itself without disturbing anyone. Many people will like that kind of experience.

A colored Saffer calling others an animal. Smh

Gibbs is not a Muslim, how does we have a Muslim family?

TBH, his comments are worse than what Sarfaraz has said. Sarafaraz only made a casual remark against an individual but Gibbs seems to be seething in anger against the whole Pakistanis.

He was always a controversy king. Not the guy with the best of the attitudes but personally I liked him as a player. A brilliant ODI batsmen on a given day.
