Ole Gunnar Solskjaer "paid the price" for Manchester United's poor form - but captain Harry Maguire says the players must also take responsibility.

The Norwegian was sacked after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Watford.

United have won just one of their past seven Premier League matches and are eighth in the table.

"We know it has not been good enough. The recent performances have not been good enough," Maguire said.

United's defeat at Watford left them 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

The recent run of poor form includes a 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool at Old Trafford and a 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City, where they were outclassed.

Maguire, who was sent off at Watford for two bookings, added: "The manager spoke to us. It was an emotional day. We have huge respect for him.

"The results recently have not been good enough and unfortunately Ole has paid the price for that.

"We have to take a big responsibility as well."

Solskjaer said on Sunday he left the club with a "better squad" than he inherited and they are ready to "kick on" to win major trophies.

He replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December 2018 before being appointed on a full-time basis in March.

United finished second and third in the Premier League under his tenure, but lost the Europa League final to Villarreal last season on penalties.

"It has snowballed from one thing to another," said Maguire, 28.

"We have not been delivering, individually and collectively. When you are not doing it collectively, the results pay the price.

"We have to take huge responsibility for that."

First-team coach Michael Carrick has been placed in temporary charge while United seek an interim manager until the end of the season.

His first match in charge will be Tuesday's Champions League tie against Villarreal.

Carrick said it was an "emotional time for everyone at the club" following Solskjaer's sacking.

"I worked with Ole for three years and I've known him for a lot longer," he said.

"To see him lose his job was tough for me and a lot of people at the club.

"I want to say a massive thank you. I learned an awful lot. It was a sad day and I wish Ole all the best."

Carrick was asked by vice-chairman Ed Woodward to take over the managerial role on Sunday.

"This club has been my life for an awful long time now. I'm not too sure [how long it will be for] but that's not on my mind right now," he added.

"I have clear plans in my own mind of what we want to do and how we want to go about it and I'm looking forward to seeing it on the pitch."

Just shows that very popular players at some clubs don't always make great managers.

I always thought he was a strange appointment and the job was far too big for him.

Fluke period or not, Zidane is on a different level to Ole. No comparison whatsoever. Would Zidane be my first choice - no, but there aren't many managers available at this point.

Numerous teams would want Ole? That has got to be an early April Fool's joke.

Its easy to derate players and mangers when they go on a bad run, it happens all the time, unfortunately for managers they lose there jobs, Ole did a remarkable job in rebuilding the club and gave us stability for the first time since SAF retired, unfortunately the players this season let him down. There are numerous teams that need a job done in rebuilding the same way he did here.

As for Zidane, i hope and pray he doesnt get appointed here, hes tactically poor and an excellent man manager, but being poor in english will take his strengths away from him,

Congratulations :))) :)))

Told you a billion times - Ole is a nothing manager and he cannot win the league for United. Oh, and Arteta outlasted him and he will go on to prove himself to be a far superior manager.

It is remarkable how you are completely wrong every single time.

All managers get sacked at some point so will Arteta before he relegates Arsenal.

Not sure why your so desperate to compare arteta and ole, ole is a manager who took MU from Midtable to top4 and stabilzed the club, while arteta is a manager who took arsenal from competing for top4 to midtable and destablized you. Theres no comparison between them.

It might not have worked out for in ole in the end but he atleast proved himself to be a rebuiling expert, dont be suprised when arsenal try and recruit him after sacking aretat

Please continue with your comedy, it is hilarious.

Arteta is not getting sacked, and he will have a far better managerial career. If you want to live in denial, so be it.

Speaking of Arteta vs Ole, Ole got sacked without scoring a single goal against Arteta. :91:

When I said Ole was rubbish the only answer I would get was how Liverpool fans were "jealous" or endless ":))):))):)))". No chance of winning the league now and struggling to find any suitable replacement makes them look even more foolish. Would have had a chance to land Conte had they sacked Ole a few weeks earlier now every top manager is either taken of distancing himself from the Man Utd job.

Moyes, Giggs, Van Gaal, Mourinho and now Ole have been shown the exit door. Whose next for the sack?. How humiliating can it get that they may end up with Brendan Rodgers a man who was fired by Liverpool!i:moyo2

taking your team from top4 to mid table is hardly having a better managerial career then finishing third , then second in your first two seasons, only behind a great city and above supposdly the best LP team ever according to there fans while they were defending champions.

Maybe in your world Aretata will be better, where everything is upside down and wrong, which we have already come to know of you. :)))

Arteta has already done his best, he cant do any better. Any fool will sack him, its great that your board is so stupid.

He is appointed as manager for Besiktas in Turkey. Very strange decision but let’s see how he fares there.
