Ollie Robinson apologizes for his shameful racist and sexist tweets / suspended by ECB

This has been unjustly blown out of proportion

Why is Craig Overton not treated in the same way??

Good decision by ECB. Now ban him for a year and make an example out of this.

This is stupidity. He was 18 year old and not a ECB employee when he tweeted this. ECB is going overboard punishing players for what they did in school or college.

Are they going to ban players if it comes out that some player smoked weed in school or college?

In the context of the BLM movement, and the fact that racism in all parts of society is finally being taken seriously, this is not an overreaction.

The guy made racist remarks on Twitter. I have literally no time for him and I don't care if the tweets were made 8 years ago or not. It doesn't make them ok. The man was an adult at the time of his tweets and so I don't buy an any excuses for his actions. We've all seen stories in the press which indicate that this Twitter tirade was by no means unique - he allegedly racially abused an Asian cricketer on the cricket field too.

Playing for your country is a privilege. If you're a racist, frankly you don't deserve it. Taking action is necessary for many reasons, including that young kids need to see this guy made an example of.

This is over reaction , he was only 18 at that time, some sort of warning should have been more than enough . He did not fix any game or anything .

This is ECB trying to atone for an inherently racist cricketing culture in England which has held back minorities for a while now.

The likes of Azeem Rafiq and others have called it out as well as the umpires and it’s starting to get a bit uncomfortable for the powers that be.

Robinson is unlucky purely because of the timing of his debut, but it’s a price to pay for writing such rubbish.

Seems like Robinson will be scape-goated. Ironic, he would have probably received an MoM for his debut performance.

Poor from ECB.

Once the guy expressed genuine remorse over his 8 years old tweets (however shameful they were at that time), should've been end of the matter.

England would have lost badly without Robinson

He has already been robbed 3 years of his test Career. So this is really unfair on him

What Overton did was way worse but I guess Robinson is unfortunate that there is documented evidence of what he did.

Also the timing of the tweet resurfacing really hurt him cause ECB is running an anti-discrimination campaign so just letting this slide would make them look foolish.

So lets just ban some Hollywood classics as well? White Chicks?

People need to stop equivalent past with today’s woke standards. You cant judge or punish an adult now based on his teenage jokes. Judge him on his actions, not some random 1 liners.

Shoaib once talked about how some Pakistan players didnt want to eat together with that Hindu player. Now thats racism , bigotry , which should be punished even now. Identify such players publicly...

I think there are two kinds of people when it comes to this, the ones who say such stuff and think it is not a big deal and then there are others who would never accept this kind of nonsense no matter how old they are. Some posters are acting like he was not 18, but 8 years old when he allowed such garabge to come into his mind and then somehow manage to post that garbage online. Ollie needs help as it would be very tough to take out all that garbage from his head.

I think this is blown way out of proportions.

1) We all make stupid comments on social media when we are young. It is not exactly excusable but it is what it is. What is important is whether people matures. I was immature in my personal life when I was 18. I made remarks on social media that makes me cringe but I am far more matured now.

2) ECB should have been aware of this earlier. You see something surface recently and now you want to ban a player? How about do the same with Craig Overton.

Btw is there a post in all these years where he apologized or even corrected someone online who was misbehaving or posting racist or sexist comments? Just asking.

As active he was online, I am sure we can find a post where his changed behaviour reflected in those posts?

Now, onto the matter of this thread.

There are a number of issues here, as Vaughn pointed out, why did the ECB not do their due diligence before hiring him? It seems the tweets were pretty easy to find.

Second, has there been an investigation into whether or not Robinson's behaviour has truly changes? Has he posted anything similar more recently?

If the answer to the above is that he has genuinely changed, then the punishment does not make much sense and is not just.

This is unfortunate, but this is a great example for kids to be careful on what they post on social media. It is never a good idea to put anything in writing that you are not prepared to back it up. A kid got booted off from one of the singing shows here in the US for posing next to someone wearing a KKK hoodie. I have also seen many scholarships being pulled out for social media post that kids posted when they were 14 or 15 years old.

Boris Johnson and the Tory Culture Secretary have blasted the 'over-the-top' decision to suspend England cricketer Ollie Robinson while he is investigated for racist and sexist messages he sent aged 18.

Oliver Dowden hit out after Robinson was suspended from all international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation.

Robinson had an impressive Test debut in the draw with New Zealand at Lord's, picking up seven wickets in the match and making a handy 42 with the bat.

But the start to the pace bowler's Test career was overshadowed by the emergence of the offensive posts he sent in 2012 and 2013, when he was in his late teens.

Cabinet minister Mr Dowden, however, said the 27-year-old was "a teenager" when the posts were written and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) must now "think again".

Boris Johnson’s official spokesman agreed with Mr Dowden, saying: “The Prime Minister is supportive of the comments from Oliver Dowden that he made via tweet this morning.

“As Oliver Dowden set out, these were comments made more than a decade ago written by someone as a teenager, for which they’ve rightly apologised.”

The Tory - who is the most senior minister on UK sport - tweeted: "Ollie Robinson's tweets were offensive and wrong.

"They are also a decade old and written by a teenager.

"The teenager is now a man and has rightly apologised.

"The ECB has gone over the top by suspending him and should think again."

After the first day's play between England and New Zealand, Robinson read from a prepared statement to say he was "embarrassed" and "ashamed" of the offending posts.

One of the messages, sent in 2012, said "my new Muslim friends is the bomb" while another said "not going to lie a lot of girls need to learn the art of class! #getsome".

They came to light hours after England had marked the first Test of the summer at the Home of Cricket by sharing a "Moment of Unity" alongside the visiting Black Caps before play, taking a stand against several forms of discrimination.

Sussex seamer Robinson will miss the second test against New Zealand.

England captain Joe Root said on Sunday he "couldn't believe" what had emerged on Wednesday and added "it's not acceptable within our game", before the ECB statement confirmed Robinson would leave the team bubble.

"England and Sussex bowler Ollie Robinson has been suspended from all international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation following historic tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013," the statement said.

"He will not be available for selection for the LV= Insurance second Test against New Zealand starting at Edgbaston on Thursday June 10. Robinson will leave the England camp immediately and return to his county."

Robinson apologised to the media and to his team-mates and while Root believes the contrition is heartfelt, the England captain believes everyone within the game can take lessons following what has transpired.

Root said: "It's not acceptable within our game. We all know that.

"He addressed the dressing room straight away. He fronted up to it. He showed a lot of remorse from that point onwards. You can see it's very genuine from how he's been around the group and the team.

"And I think it's a great lesson for everyone within our game that we can all do more.

"We all have to keep looking to educate ourselves, trying to better the environment for everyone, trying to be as inclusive as we can, keep making everyone feel comfortable to play what a wonderful sport we have."

Robinson has a separate employment contract with Sussex so he is free to play, if selected, for the county during his international suspension.

Ollie Robinson received no guarantees about his England future from head coach Chris Silverwood after the seamer was indefinitely suspended from international cricket pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation.

Robinson, now 27, issued an apology for racist and sexist tweets he posted in 2012 and 2013, when he was in his late teens, that were unearthed and shared online on the day he made his Test bow versus New Zealand at Lord's.

The England and Wales Cricket Board's suspension of Robinson has been criticised by Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, who said the decision was "over the top" as he asked the governing body to "think again".

While Robinson apologised, both publicly and privately, saying he was "embarrassed" and "ashamed" of what he had written, he has been stood down from the second Test against the Kiwis at Edgbaston, which starts on Thursday.

Robinson may have made an impact on the field, taking seven wickets at Lord's and contributing an important 42 runs with the bat lower down the order, but he was given no assurances about England after the probe has concluded

"The investigation will happen and any decisions will be made after that," said Silverwood, speaking after the drawn first Test.

"Let's see what comes of it first. There'll be an investigation and we'll see after that.

"What should have been one of the greatest days of Ollie's career didn't end up well for him. It was disappointing for the group. It was a stark reminder for us all of the responsibilities that we hold in the position that we are in.

"There is absolutely no place in this game for any form of discrimination whatsoever. He showed a lot of remorse, he apologised publicly, he apologised to the dressing room. I think it's been a really big learning for him.

"The big thing for us all is education. We are all striving to be better, none of us are perfect, and we all need to make sure we are learning all the time. We can make sure the world is a better place."

Dowden waded into the matter on Monday, acknowledging Robinson's tweets were "offensive and wrong" but added they "are also a decade old and written by a teenager". The ECB had no comment to make when asked about the remarks.

Dowden said: "The teenager is now a man and has rightly apologised. The ECB has gone over the top by suspending him and should think again."

Robinson was informed about his historical tweets resurfacing when he came off the field at the end of play on Wednesday by Silverwood, who admitted England had to temporarily park the issue to focus on the rest of the Test.

"He was obviously devastated, embarrassed and very remorseful," said Silverwood. "He was very quick to take on board what had happened. He had to face up to this.

"It's not what we wanted, that's for sure. Equally we had to get on with the Test match. That isn't to say we dismissed it whatsoever. We will seek the education around that in order to try to better ourselves."

Craig Overton may be Robinson's replacement in Birmingham but scrutiny could fall on the seamer, who was banned for two matches after allegedly telling then Sussex player Ashar Zaidi to "get back to your own country" in 2015.

Overton has always denied making the comment and did so again in an interview with wisden.com last week, but England have recently stepped up their attempts to combat discrimination in all its forms in cricket.

England and New Zealand shared a 'Moment of Unity' at the Home of Cricket last Wednesday, with the hosts wearing t-shirts incorporating anti-discrimination messages, hours before Robinson's social media posts came to light.

"If Craig plays, we will deal with that when we get there," said Silverwood.

England plumped for an all-seam frontline attack last week but they have added Yorkshire off-spinner Dom Bess to their squad as cover for slow left-armer Jack Leach ahead of the series decider against the Black Caps.

Bess, who took 12 wickets in the series win in Sri Lanka at the start of the year before struggling for consistency in India, should be able to train with England from Wednesday after 48 hours of managed isolation.

"Jack's absolutely fine," Silverwood added. "The reason we've added Dom is that any cover we may need has to be in here with us.

"If Jack was to feature, we would need back-up for him, in terms of concussion replacements and things like that. If we are looking at a spinner and Jack gets injured leading into it, then we will need someone else there."

IMO the guy should sue the ECB.

I am against racism and this guy deserves hate/criticism for it but I am also against injustice.

Robinson should take legal action against the ECB

Poor from ECB. Why suspend him for views he held back in 2012 as an 18 year old. Was he employed by the ECB then? And that too for a social media post? He has apologised and at worst he should have been fined and made to do community service if at all ECB wanted to be seen as doing something.

ECB had to do something, especially with their anti discrimination stance at the beginning of the match, Ollie was made an example off. For those calling for overton to receive the same treatment the issue with him is he was dealt with already leniently or otherwise by the ECB, as far as they are concerned he has done his time.

This has not been alleged at all.

Ah sorry my mistake - I read the article on page 1 which talks about a racist incident, but I misread it and now realise it was talking about Craig Overton. My mistake and I stand corrected!

Wow this is shocking and shows up yet again the right wing tendancies of the people who lead us. Nothing at all has happened yet - Robinson has just been suspended pending investigation. Yet the Culture Secretary and now the PM are falling over each other effectively to say its ok for racism to go unpunished. We approve.

Truly shocking!!!

Quite an awkward position to take for the Tories to be fair. The culture secretary is making the excuse that Ollie was a teenager when making those comments, but then how does he explain his boss - the Prime Minister making equally crass remarks re letterboxes? I think he was a bit past his teenage years when he shared that beauty with the world.

It seems like all English cricketers were sexist or racist until 2013...

Its no surprise they said this, these tories have institutionalised racism in the party themselves The pm himself has history of it calling people that wear burka letterboxes etc

Few cricketers are busy in deleting old tweets and few changed settings to protective mode.
:rabada2

Seriously , people need to learn how live and ignore a lot of stuff on social media .

Some of these Tweets are hilarious, i'm sorry.

It's a bit of banter but i see the point that these lads need to be careful.

Twitter is like LinkedIn to professional folk. Use it wisely and be careful what you say on it and what you share of course.

Furthermore, as a Muslim forgive Ollie. He was immature kid and if i'm willing to move on then so can everyone else, if he said sorry that's all that counts in my eyes.

It maybe over the top from ECB to suspend Robinson for a tweet that he made a decade ago but it is a good stance in a longer run as it is basically a statement for all the youngsters and teenagers who wish to play for their country when its their time.

What Ollie Robinson did was wrong, he has owned up to it, very remorseful and apologised.

However it was done when he was 18, some 8/9 years ago and nothing else has happened since then.

At 18 he was obviously immature, naïve and pratting at that age.

I do think it is over the top.

Yes continue with those racist hilarious tweets and continue saying sorry no problem.

Comparing smoking weed to a racist remarks good comparison

Poor from ECB.

Once the guy expressed genuine remorse over his 8 years old tweets (however shameful they were at that time), should've been end of the matter.

Did he delete the tweet after he made it or is it stil on his twitter feed ?

Yes continue with those racist hilarious tweets and continue saying sorry no problem.

Ollie was sincere (I hope) but honestly i find some of these Tweets funny, it's just how English humour is to be honest.

I'm not gonna butcher a player for this and disallow them to have a career, some of them are horrible and brutal but yea you've gotta suspend the lot if they are making these comments. There will be nothing left of the England cricket team if they are chucked out.

Boris is a such a buffoon, shooting himself in the foot. When you have a record longer than your arm, you shouldnt be commenting at all. This is the same man who recently backed racist Israel in its killings of others. Islamaphobia, sexism and other discrimination is rife in the Tory party.

I think after the investigation he will recieve some sort of suspension but should be back to cricket not long after.

Lets hope the other England cricketers arent investiaged for their tweets as it would be a struggle to find a playing XI.

The problem is where does this end.

If you start allowing racist and homophobic tweets as banter, then where do you draw the line.

If you allow players to do it who are young, where do you draw the line regarding age.

ECB must be consistant. Other tweets posted on this thread show a little milder but still offence tweets esp towards women. These include top stars of England, will they now be investigated or is Ollie an easy target being a newcomer?

Good point.

ECB were already looking hypocritical whilst still trying to gloss over Craig Overton’s inclusion, but now a whole new can of worms has been opened.

In all fairness, that Tweet by Anderson (15 year old L*****n) is probably the worst thing I have read out of all of these tweets.

Yep 15 is still a classed as a child/teenager.

But imagine he was 21, Englands greatest ever bowler losing all his repuation and being classed as a racist or sexist. The can of worms may even evolve into legends not being legends anymore.

Also Im sure you can find tweets from cricketers from other nations, perhaps someone should read everyones back to see how their boards will respond.

More historic tweets of a discriminatory nature from a player involved with the England men's squad have emerged. The unnamed player was under 16 at the time of the offensive social media posts

Search for McCullum, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler Indian tweets. I think its just harmless fun.

I guess everyone will be going on twitter now to search up skeletons.

Oh dear , seems like this is going to take an unexpected turn. Not sure who it is but if a player has taken 600 wickets, confirmed as legend of the game but now all this could be tarnished if the media make this story explode.

2 of England Women’s main players are in a homosexual relationship. I don’t see how the ECB can gloss this one over considering how they have been driving the women in sport and gender equality narratives in the last 3-4 years. Just imagine all of the ladies cricketers in England reading or hearing of that tweet by Jimmy Anderson, one of the greatest English cricketers!

Michael carberry is basically seething and has launched a scathing attack on Ecb, ollie Robinson, and the culture Secretary for making his statement

England’s 2021 WC team should not consist of Jason Roy and Joss Butler if that’s the case

I agree but I have a feeling the ladies in the England team will come out & forgive Jimmy due to him being arguably GOAT of England cricket.

Carberry has played the victim card too often.

It's easy for a a non-white to claim they were not selected due to racism yet failing to realise more white players are rejected proportionally.

May be carberry sees things in the professional set up that we dont, I mean the guys been a professional cricketer for 20 years, so the statements hes been coming out with would have weight behind them.

Carberry said he faced discrimination on a regular bases and on one occasion he almost put his career on the line by smacking a coach who came out with shocking remarks.

Regarding the Olli Robinson case, he wants Ecb to throw the kitchen sink at him and ifbhe had it his way Robinson would not play for England again.

Bojo has chipped in backing the culture secretary but he would, wouldn’t he? The man who made the letterboxes and bank robber comments.

This entire thing is a mountain out of a molehill, just like when Smith and Warner were banned for an unreasonable period of time beyond the ICC guidelines just to pacify the social media mob.

Ollie sounds like a guy who would take his head out from a running car and pass a vulgar comment on the dress of the woman walking near by the street. Not sure if we want people like him play cricket and represent their country at the highest level without any punishment.

Imagine if Craig Overton replaces Ollie Robinson.

What Ollie tweeted was casual racism when he was a teenager. But what Craig did was far more racist. To top it all off, he still denies that he said it. It's a disgrace he got a slap on the wrist (deemed as a level 1 offence) for what he said. I don't think Zaidi even received an apology.

Double standards from the ECB.

I feel sorry for Ollie Robinson. He didn't deserve to be banned.

As for Craig Overton, if ECB are serious about dealing with racism, they need to revisit this case and ensure he gets the punishment he deserves. Also, Zaidi deserves a public apology before Overton can be allowed to play again.

The way the ECB have handled this is nothing short of shambolic.

exactly, overton deserves the same punishment that smith and warner received.

The ecb are aware that people will expose overton if he gets picked for the 2nd test and this will make the ecb look very stupid. There is no other no.8 who could bat in the squad besides robinson and overton. SInce both won't play, bess(who had bowled terribly) has been called into the squad as he can bat.

It was a right move to suspend him temporarily. There needs to be consequences for these kind of behaviors. SC cricket boards need to learn from this.

I guess thing with Ollie is that his whole character came under question because he not only put forward racist comments rather at the same time he appeared sexist as well as someone who doesnt shy away from targeting or stereotyping even a religion. Yes one can argue about ECB’s decision but, I dont think one can argue about the fact that irrespective of his age Ollie took it too far on not only racism but multiple fronts.

Also pretty astonishing to see some of the tweets by other English players as well that have been shared here. It looks like there are certain things which quite a few consider or considered normal and funny while completely ignoring the undertone and realizing that they are actually are quite offensive to many around.

Such behaviour in one form or another is possibly widespread in English cricket by the looks of it and ECB needs to have a course designed which should be taught to every young player and he should pass that before joining any county and U19 setup to have basic understanding of how to respect any race, gender or religion. Also there should be revision course every year like its done in most diverse organizations around the world.

English cricket is pretty diverse with cricketers from many countries, race, religion playing in county cricket and even playing for England. Its a big lapse on ECBs part if they don't have compulsory courses (Which by the looks of it they dont) for all their players every year unlike many top and diverse organizations of the world.

Its a good idea and why ECB, should be true for all other boards too.

How is it ok for a 15 year old to be casually racist in England? Hate to see the way people are defending this unnamed player. One could only imagine what kind of racial discrimination or racial abuse this individual may have inflicted during his school years!

for anyone thats been in and around the schooling system in the UK when it comes to cricket and football, you will know this is nothing new. Kids are openly racist the divides are evident even from a young age and the worst thing is coaches and parents treat it like its the norm. Azim Rafiques testimony, the tweets coming out is just the tip of the iceberg , the fact that the PM feels the need to make a statement saying its ok , but goes into hiding when football fans racially abuse others says it all.

It's not ok for any player to be casually racist, but the difference is there's documented evidence of OR comments.

On the flip side do you think OR is the only player who held such views? No way, I bet there are countless players who do, just they haven't been caught with irrefutable evidence yet.

Ollie Robinson: Prime Minister's intervention is 'unwelcome', says Mark Ramprakash

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's intervention in the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) suspension of bowler Ollie Robinson is "unwelcome", says former England batsman Mark Ramprakash.

Robinson has been suspended by the ECB pending an investigation into historical racist and sexist tweets posted in 2012 and 2013.

The Prime Minister said he was "supportive" of Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden saying the ECB had "gone over the top" and should "think again".

Asked on BBC Breakfast what he thought of the PM's involvement, Ramprakash, who played 52 Tests for England between 1991 and 2002, said: "I think it is very unwelcome. He is trying to bear undue influence in this case.

"If I was Ollie Robinson I'm not sure I'd want Boris Johnson involved and trying to support me."

Ramprakash, who was also England batting coach between 2014 and 2017, added the England dressing room would have been a "pretty toxic place" if Jofra Archer or Moeen Ali had been part of the same team as Robinson at Lord's.

"I've heard people express sort of sympathy with Ollie Robinson, and say 'hasn't he shown a lot of character?', but I haven't heard enough about the victims or the people that these tweets are aimed at," said Ramprakash.

"How do they feel? Where is the sympathy for those people? They are UK citizens, a lot of them.

"We live in a diverse society and we really don't want this behaviour."

Robinson, 27, posted the tweets when he was aged 18 and 19 and they came to light on Wednesday afternoon, while he was making his England debut in the drawn first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

After play, he apologised, saying he was "embarrassed" and "ashamed".

The Sussex bowler was then suspended, and made unavailable for the second Test, which starts on Edgbaston on Thursday, when the game ended on Sunday night.

England bowler James Anderson said Robinson also apologised to his team-mates after the first Test and while there was "the initial shock at the language used", he has "the full support the team".

"The language and things talked about are obviously not acceptable," Anderson said on Tuesday.

"He stood up in front of the group and apologised - you could see how sincere and upset he was.

"As a group we appreciate he's a different person now. He's done a lot of maturing and growing since then."

The Culture Secretary tweeted his stance on Monday morning, with a spokesperson for the PM confirming his support for it later that day.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday, former England captain David Gower agreed with Dowden, saying he did not think a suspension was the right way forward and the ECB should make Robinson "do the equivalent of community service".

However, Michael Carberry, who played six Tests for England between 2010 and 2014, told 5 Live that Robinson "wouldn't be playing Test cricket" if it was up to him, adding: "I don't believe this is a problem where you can rehabilitate someone."

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if this unnamed 15 year old went to some posh private school during his school days

Is there anything more sad that losers trying to find old offensive tweets of celebrities and sportspeople before they were famous. Talk about not having a life. Bunch of sad losers.

Of course, the pathetic ECB would go overboard and ban Robinson. They have been bowing down to this BLM movement over the past one year, so this is not a surprise.

"I was a young man once, I did a lot of rubbish as a youngster, and as you go through life you learn."

Michael Holding says Ollie Robinson should not be severely punished if an investigation into his historical offensive tweets proves he has changed his behaviour.
