Yeah, remembering those performances it's hard to accept the fact that he's currently playing club cricket, when back then you would've predicted him to be playing as a world-class all rounder in LOIs right now. :/

Tbh, all the finals were anti-climatic in the Aussie era ('99/'03/'07), but I think ours was the most Simply because we had already defeated that same XI with the exact same players earlier in the group stages (though it was a close game). I remember praying for an Australian victory in the semifinal because I knew there was no way we were going to beat South Africa. I wish I hadn't lol

I think the difference was not in talent, but in mental toughness and being clinical. Australians were far ahead, and only South Africa (barring their choking abilities) were a match to them.

Other teams either lacked the skills or focus which Australian team had.

Yes, prior to that Pakistan had lost probably 17 consecutive ODIs to SA ?

I think Australia gained a lot of mental toughness by playing two very high pressure games against SA prior to final, and that helped them being much better prepared to handle the pressure of a final. Pakistan on the other hand, had an easier route, in super-6 (they lost meekly to SA and India) and had an easy opponent in NZ during SF.

BTW, the loss to Pakistan in the league stage was Australia's last loss in WC during their dominant era, which was again broken by Pakistan in 2011.

Don't know why him and Afridi could never deliver with bat and bowl consistently. Both could have become amazing players.

Probably the defeat that hurt most seeing how it just wasn't a contest.
