On this day 1999. 113* from Saeed Anwar & 3 superb yorkers from Shoaib Akhtar helped Pakistan reach a World Cup final. Screenshot_2014-06-16-13-11-15.jpg

I think there is a confusion. If memory serves me right, the yorkers were in the league game against NZ and not SF. I presume that unplayable yorker to Fleming is one of them. I could be wrong!

Here's the video of Akhtar's dismissals :-

And what an anti-climax the final was :(

Razzaq's bowling was unbelievable in this WC. Would have made most teams PURELY as a bowler..

I dont know what happened to the poor guy

Wasim led the team impressively, great tournament for Pakistan but the final was ruined by the rain and the Aussie win :(

The final was a huge let down, pakistan with that set of players should ve put up a much better fight than they did

Yeah, remembering those performances it's hard to accept the fact that he's currently playing club cricket, when back then you would've predicted him to be playing as a world-class all rounder in LOIs right now. :/

Tbh, all the finals were anti-climatic in the Aussie era ('99/'03/'07), but I think ours was the most :P Simply because we had already defeated that same XI with the exact same players earlier in the group stages (though it was a close game). I remember praying for an Australian victory in the semifinal because I knew there was no way we were going to beat South Africa. I wish I hadn't lol :P

This was probably the most gifted and talented team in our history. Everyone at their peak from top to bottom.

I think the difference was not in talent, but in mental toughness and being clinical. Australians were far ahead, and only South Africa (barring their choking abilities) were a match to them.

Other teams either lacked the skills or focus which Australian team had.

Yes, prior to that Pakistan had lost probably 17 consecutive ODIs to SA ?

I think Australia gained a lot of mental toughness by playing two very high pressure games against SA prior to final, and that helped them being much better prepared to handle the pressure of a final. Pakistan on the other hand, had an easier route, in super-6 (they lost meekly to SA and India) and had an easy opponent in NZ during SF.

BTW, the loss to Pakistan in the league stage was Australia's last loss in WC during their dominant era, which was again broken by Pakistan in 2011.

Don't know why him and Afridi could never deliver with bat and bowl consistently. Both could have become amazing players.

Probably the defeat that hurt most seeing how it just wasn't a contest.

Chased with 9 wickets to spare yet in the final in overcast and a damp pitch we became poor chasers hence it was a team decision to bat first.

Back when NZ was our bunny team! We bashed NZ from 1960 until 2014! What happened since then...

This is probably PAK’s last win against Kiwis in an ICC ODI event.

So many memories attached with this era. Cricket was at its best in late 90s and early 2000s.
