On This Day: 14th August, 2016 - Pakistan beat England at The Oval to level the Test series at 2-2

England won the toss and opted to bat first but were soon in a bit of bother as they were reduced to 110/5. However, a Bairstow fifty and Moeen hundred helped England to a competitive total of 328. Sohail Khan took the last four wickets to finish with a five-fer.

In reply, Asad Shafiq hit a sparkling hundred while Younis Khan got one of his own, finally able to overcome his struggles on the England tour. However, Pakistan lost a couple of quick wickets to put the match on an even keel at the end of Day 2. It was not to be, however, as Younis Khan carried on with the tail, making a spectacular double-hundred. The last four wickets added 222 runs as Pakistan took a 214-run lead.

It was a Yasir Shah show in England's second innings as he took five important wickets. Bairstow resisted with an excellent 81 but it was not enough as England were bowled out for 253, setting Pakistan a lowly target of 40 which was achieved in quick time. Massive celebrations followed, in stark contrast to Pakistan's previous tour in 2010 which resulted in disgrace and humiliation after the spot-fixing scandal.

Cannot believe its just been a year since that victory! What a proud moment it was for Pakistan that day.

My Favorite moment of the Misbah Era along with that Last ball wicket from Yasir.

The feeling of reaching the summit was absolutely unreal !!

For some reason something always happens when Pakistan visit England, thank you team for providing us with memories that we will never forget. what a series that was.

A Test that'll live long in the memory as it was such a complete performance with bat and ball. Team showed a lot of resilience after the heartbreaking loss at Edgbaston.

We have a record to be proud of at The Oval.

That Azhar Ali six off Moeen to win the match will forever remain in the memories of Pakistani fans! :)

Can't believe it's been a whole year already. I remember how happy I felt that day, just happened to be on independence day. My favourite moment had to be the amazing celebrations when Woakes was run out and then Bairstow caught the next ball. The match turned from that point. One of the days I wish I could relive. In fact, I would rather relive this moment than the CT final this year, and that is saying something

Excellent win for Pakistan on their favourite ground in the UK, There have been some memorable wins for the team on this ground and this was the best. Also a well earned 2-2 draw.

Was interesting to see how many Posters on PP actually predicted a 2-2 series draw and also predicting that pakistan would win at lords and the oval? ;) :)

Great victory. The sad thing is that we could have won the series if not for the horrendous batting at Edgbaston on the last day.

Sami Aslam's batting in the 2nd innings (against an attack of Root and Moeen Ali) was cowardly and selfish, which was a blemish on otherwise fine victory.

How was it selfish? We were chasing 40 runs and we had the rest of day 4 and all of day 5 to get it.

It was clear he was trying not to get out. Playing defensively against an attack of Root and Moeen Ali is inexcusable. It was outright torture watching him bat in that innings. Thank God for Azhar Ali who took the attack to the bowlers and finished the game off.

Yeah we should have had a repeat of that match against South Africa where our top order panicked chasing 40 in the fourth innings and we had to rely on Misbah and Younis to finish it after being reduced to 7/3.

A reminder that we won the match by ten wickets.

He played better in that series than Shan Masood who he replaced.

In the South Africa match our top order was facing Philander and Steyn. This was Moeen Ali and Joe Root. Heck of a lot of difference.

Shan Masood has actually done something which Sami Aslam has not and that is play a match winning innings against Sri Lanka where we chased 380.

We are yet to see Sami Aslam actually win a match for Pakistan. This is understandable given his regular 22 runs off 136 balls knocks.

Shan Masood averages 16.83 at a strike rate of 36.72 in his last 6 innings. He was rightfully dropped and doesn't deserve a place over Sami Aslam, or even Ahmed Shehzad, for that matter.

Great day

Should have been a series win if our batsmen as usual hadnt lost their heads on the last day in Edgbaston

Such an opportunity missed.

Dunno when we will next win a series in Eng, Aus or SA!

Ignore the critics - you're spot on here.

It's good to see him back in domestics not man enough and too selfish to belong at international level.

One of my favourite test victories of all time, a day that Pakistan fans won't forget anytime soon. Best moment of the match for me was when Younis got to his double century.

Look, your criticism of Sami is justifiable. He plays way too defensively at times and invites pressure onto himself and the team. But you are seriously mistaken if you think Shan is a better opener.

Shan lacks the basic essentials for an opener, or any Test quality batsman. He is incredibly loose outside his off-stump, specially deliveries that are just short of a length. He is weak against short-pitched bowling. Every time he's faced Anderson, it's been embarrassing to watch. He got bounced out by him, even.

Sami's issues are easier to rectify, he just needs to stop crouching so much and stop trying to look for a ball that is pitched perfectly in his zone to score off. He needs to be more positive and understand that run-scoring is essential. However, it has been mentioned time and time again that the team plan when Azhar and Sami were opening was to bat out time, as much as possible, to blunt the ball for the middle-order batsmen. Sami has shown in domestic cricket that he can score at a fast pace, heck, faster than a lot of others.

I am yet to see anything from Shan that would suggest that he has rectified his problems and that's because he simply lacks ability. He is not good at picking up length. He does not even have a lot of shot-making ability. In short, I see no positive in him besides his work ethic and fitness - which is extremely commendable; however, you can't make a career off only fitness otherwise just about anyone would be able to become a professional cricketer if they work hard enough. But that isn't the case.

Came here to say this- I second everything you have said.

I was lucky enough to watch the winning moments live- what a day that was!

Still don't understand why they took tea though!

Happy with the draw but should have won the series.
Pathetic decision not to play Sami from the first match.

I never understand continuing with mediocrity just because the other player is 'new'.

A wonderful series. Pakistan played some excellent cricket and really should have won the series but for the brainless moments at Edgbaston.

Great 200 by YK. That really changed the whole match and put england on the ropes. He got Brilliant support from tail enders too especially amir. Those partnerships were vital in changing the complexion of the match and england never really recovered after that.

Plus YK yet again proved his critics wrong who had sharpened the knives for him when he had failed in the previous test matches. It was so satisfying to watch. One of his best innings and can be considered as one of the best test innings by a pakistani test batsman given the context of the series and the match.

Let's not forget we were actually surprised Sami Aslam was in the test squad. His FC average was nothing special, we were all under the impression he was more of an ODI player, which is why we were even more surprised by his amazing innings at Edgbaston. So I think it's fair enough he didn't make the 11 originally, even if it was someone like Shan Masood picked over him. Either way, if he played the first 2 tests it would not have made a huge difference because we won at Lords anyway and at Manchester we were thrashed so we were gonna lose anyway.

It was an amazing day,an amazing victory.A brilliant Independence day gift.I remember the match and, more specifically, the winning moments quite clearly.

Sami is better than Shan, Hafeez etc openers. Just because they are old and 'experienced' doesn't mean they are good. I am a believer in youth and we saw in Champions trophy how youth played major part in CT win.

Secondly what was the domestic average of Azhar when he joined Pak squad? Domestic averages always dont tell the complete story. You have to see the potential too. Sami was better than other opening options and thats enough I think.

Lastly playing Sami from the 1st match might have helped in the third match as he would have been better familiar with the conditions and bowling attack. Some more runs from Sami and we might have won it. He got out on 82 and 70 in that test may be he could have converted those starts to hundreds. Bigger picture!

Anyways most people are happy with draw series but I think we should aim high and had/have the ability to achieve.

Selfish fifties in a match where the team ultimately ends up losing like in Edgbaston should not be rated. Only innings which led to a victory should be held in high regard e.g. Younus Khan 200 at the oval

How were they selfish 50s? At Edgbaston in the first innings the partnership between him and Azhar Ali was brilliant it really tired out England's bowlers and fielders. Sami Aslam was run out and that was Azhar Ali's fault because Sami Aslam did not look like getting out at all. Second innings, we were 125-6 and he had scored 70 which is more than half of the runs. He played a superb innings in that match and was hardly selfish as everyone else flopped. If the other senior batsmen could get runs we would have drawn or even won that match. Let's not forget Shafiq got a pair in that match

Can’t believe it’s been 2 years, damn, time does fly.

Hafeez still has a Pakistan cricket career in 2 years, and we thought that test series was the last of him.

Brilliant series that was for Pakistan. Great performances and good wins.

Younis Khan silencing haters.

Unforgettable :)

One of the finest moments of the great Misbah era :) We were mighty close of 3-1!

This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you play in overseas conditions. Kohli and co. need to call up Misbah for wishing him for independence day and hope he imparts some wisdom about how to excel in these conditions.

What a win this was. After the 3rd test I gave up hope for this game but how wrong was I. One of our greatest moments in test cricket since IK retirement.

The greatest tragedy is that we had all but won the series 3-1 had Mr. Azhar Ali not ran out a well set Sami Aslam and then got himself out on the last ball of the day.

That defeat still stings.

We lost a total of three wickets on that day.

First over: Hafeez (customary knick to slip)

Sami Aslam on debut, gets totally done by the infamous runner Azhar Ali and is robbed of a maiden Test hundred.

Last ball of the day: Azhar Ali wants to end on a high (his words) and decides to knick Woakes to Cook at first slip.

This was a beautiful day. How has it been 2 years already. I remember feeling so patriotic on this day as it was also Pakistan Independence day, started listening to Pakistani songs after it and had very good vibes...

PAKISTAN ZINDABAD

One of the best series I have ever watched, a series we should have won if we did not collapse in one session of the last day in 3rd test.

This was a great innings! Loved watching every ball. Really admired the way he hit that double hundred to really swing the game in Pakistan's favour especially while batting with the tail

I remember Younis telling the media he got a phone call from Azharuddin who told him to stay deep in the crease.

Because Younis Khan was hopping and jumping around during the series.

was there live on the day to watch him bat and bat and bat... amazing innings.. one of his very best if not the best ....

Yeh he struggled so much with all that jumping around throughout that series. I love how he wasn't afraid to give credit to Azharuddin after that innings. One of the hardest working cricketers we've ever had and always had that ability to play match winning knocks in tests.

What a brilliant Test match that was - so memorable.

Hell of an comeback by YK. Struggled 3 Tests and it made it all up in the last game with a massive hundred.

Miss you YK!

Amazing match, the 2016 England Tour is so memorable and one of my favorite series ever

Exceptional knock by Younis. It shows his class that he played a knock like this at that age.

Most memorable and a day of unbridled joy for all of us!

What is rhe formula to win 2 tests in England. Please share :moyo

Looks to me 3rd Test could well be that kind of moment for Pakistan - wonder if Asad Shafiq will rise to the occasion?

Last time I felt we had a proper Test team with a settled core where everyone knew what their roles were.

Asad Shafiq scoring a century to help Pakistan beat a big team away from home. Feels so strange saying that now.

Even though younis was on his last legs n junaid wouldve retired him 2-3 yrs before this seeies younis was still capable of scoring match winning tons like this abroad

If only we had a player of that calibre now....

Looks to me 3rd Test could well be that kind of moment for Pakistan - wonder if Asad Shafiq will rise to the occasion?

I read this and realise that i genuinely hope not. Even if it means we lose, i've just had enough of him hanging on by the skin of his teeth and want him gone.

Pakistan could've lost that series badly without YK. It shows how important YK was to Pakistan's Test team.

His failures with the bat also played a part in costing them two Tests.

In fact, that was a problem near the end of his career.

The key word was in part

There are 11 players in a team and the load shouldnt fall on one person where if he fails hes blamed for losses

The failure of one who in the past has won many games shouldnt be held against him when he still capable of pulling out the rabbit from the hat like younus khan did in that final test

It becomes a problem when like shafiq and azhar those big innnings and match winning ones become non existent
