British and US bombers have dropped hundreds of thousands of explosives on the German city of Dresden.

The city is reported to be a vital command centre for the German defence against Soviet forces approaching from the east.

Last night, 800 RAF Bomber Command planes let loose 650,000 incendiaries and 8,000lb of high explosives and hundreds of 4,000lb bombs in two waves of attack. They faced very little anti-aircraft fire.

As soon as one part of the city was alight, the bombers went for another until the whole of Dresden was ablaze.

The Dresden trip took 12 hours. On this trip, I could still see the fires 500 miles away from Dresden.

"There were fires everywhere with a terrific concentration in the centre of the city," said one Pathfinder pilot.

RAF crew reported smoke rising to a height of 15,000 ft (4,572 m).

This was followed by another attack in daylight by 311 US heavy bombers.

The Americans sent 450 B-17 Flying Fortress long-range bombers which arrived at 1230 local time. The pilots witnessed fires still blazing from the night before.

The same number of bombers flew to the city of Chemnitz, south-west of Dresden, to attack railways and factories and yet more attacked Magdeburg.

A major road bridge across the Rhine at Wesel was also hit.

The Times newspaper reports 19 German planes destroyed along with 98 locomotives and 185 railway cars.

Dresden is regarded by the Allies as the centre of its rail network linking eastern and southern Germany with Berlin, Prague and Vienna.

Last night, the RAF also hit oil plants at Nuremberg, Bonn and Dortmund.

Fighter Command Spitfires also pinpointed V weapons sites in the Netherlands that have launched hundreds of flying bombs against England in the last year.

And to think some Western nations want to teach morality to others?!

Nazi Germany sowed the wind and reaped the whirlwind.

After Dresden the RAF-USAAF bombing offensive wound down as there was nothing left to bomb. My old Dad was going to be remastered out of the RAF into the infantry in Burma, but he took a radar course instead, and thereby stayed in the light blue.

Big fan of the German people (minus the Nazis).... twice they have been bombed to smithreens (mostly due to their own actions) but again they have risen and carrying all of Europe on their shoulders. Hitler may have been partly right that his nation is a superior race.

Twice? Germans have done it again, the third time, ony this time without bombs or bullets. It's called the EU and Eurozone.

There is no such thing as race. The Germans as a nation are organised, careful and methodical, and very good at manufacturing quality (if over-engineered!) goods.

Oh dear.

Feel sorry for the common German people, but Nazis called it on them. They started the bombing first on London & crashed everything that came in their path towards east.

The first bombs on London were a mistake by a German bomber

GB then bombed berlin and that got Hitler angry...

As an Englishman I have no remorse, no regrets.

Nazi Germany started it.

My only regret is that we didn’t turn on Stalin and the USSR and save Eastern Europe from 45 years of misery.

If you want a crime against the German people, try this for size.

The Soviet Red Army gangraped every female aged 8-70 as they advanced through Prussia into East Germany.

Germany’s second city, Koenigsberg, is a 2018 World Cup host city - as the ethnically cleansed “Russian” city of Kaliningrad.

Poland was ethnically cleansed of Poles by Stalin and mainly resettled by Ukrainians as western Ukraine.

Prussia - the heart of Germany - was ethnically cleansed of Germans, and the displaced Poles were transferred there to Stettin and to Danzig - now known as Sczeczin and Gdańsk and rebadged as “Poland”.

Not sure we could even have held them, let alone gone forward. The Red Army was twice the size of the US and British Empire forces.

Of course the West had the bomber power to obliterate any Soviet city with or without nukes, and that may have been the reason for Dresden - a power display to the advancing Red Army.
