Below average fielder

A player just selected for his PSL performance?

Players like Rizwan,Saud average much higher and are much younger.

Pathetic stuff from PCB

Obviously for his power game . Expect him to improve if given a longer rope.

Give him time he is making an effort last couple of innings he has looked to build an innings you will not get ready made players if he gets going on England odi highways there is no bigger hitter in Pakistan

Pakistanis get very hyper when they find a new toy and want to run it into a ground.

I'm surprised Abbas hasn't played ODIs and T20Is yet.

He reminds of sohaib maqsood because of his wierd way of getting out, sohaib also had a pretty decent power game as well, perhaps Asif is slightly more compact than him and also can hit more huge, give him more time I think.

I was hoping this T20 series would've been Asif's last one. But team persisting with it. He has been given enough chances to prove his game.

He is a very clean striker of a ball no doubt and is good player for T20. Pakistan is in need of a pich hitter and are desperate to try out some new talent. I would like to see him play in S.A. in T20 to see if he should be retained in the ODI squad for WC prep.

I might be in the minority him, but doesn't anyone think he's genuinely impressive? Seen him in the PSL and in the T20s at he's looked very promising. Clean hitter against pace. Power game. Doesn't look like the run of the mill sloggers we've seen so much of in the team in the past. I've hardly ever seen batsmen like him coming from Pakistan, seems like a rarity.

I'm more so annoyed a cricketer with that ability has done so bad until 27. What happened up to then?

I wouldn't play him in ODIs now, no point our batting is too fragile and we can't afford someone like him I don't think when he doesn't bowl. I could only see him working as a hitter down the order at 7 right now, and he can't play there.

Though if he keeps getting international practice in T20s and continues to work in domestic too, when the world cup's done, I think he could end up a decent ODI player for us.

This is the era for Hacks, must be backed and fully supported.

Totally agree. Inzi has been pathetic in this regard

Absolutely top quality post.

We need to back him, and Fakhar and hope that they blossom at this level and hope that we play less and less cricket in UAE

The problem for a long time with Pakistan's batting is we have too many one paced batsmen and lack boundary hitters.

Whilst Asif Ali can be frustrating and needs to improve against spin, can be destructive on flatter, truer pitches as we saw in the Zimbabwe tri-series. In the UAE on grounds with big boundaries and slow pitches, it's not easy for big hitters as we saw with Australia recently.

Tonight, despite a poor dismissal off a full toss, he showed signs that he is adapting and trying to construct an innings.

I think he could replace Imam as an opener. It would be L+R combo. And two hard-hitting openers like Roy/Hales, or Guptill/McCullum.

Asif is decent against pacers, scores most of his runs in boundaries, has a compact batting stance, and he has opened before in domestics.

Fakhar+Asif could be Warner/Finch 2.0.

We should judge him outside of the UAE, imo.

Agree with this. Guys like Fakhar, Finch, Lynn, Short and De Grandhome are all big hitters but have all struggled in UAE. Only guy at the moment suceeding is Munro. Asif needs to be persisted with to see how he does overseas.

No need if he averages below 30 in flat pitches of Pakistan then I don't think so

He might have some power but he is a mediocre timer of the ball
Consistently struggles to clear the field

Doesn't have much else in his game outside of power. And at a time when he's struggling to keep his T20 spot they include him in ODIs..

Poor selection, but also goes to show how desperate Pakistan is for some power hitting

I'd rather have Anwar Ali

He is awful, BUT his biggest weakness is spin, which won't be as exposed when in AUS for t20 WC.

Still would take Umar Akmal over him, batting left handed.

Umar Akmal WAS a great talent we lost for his own antics. Asif can't be compared to him. Asif came in to the team as someone who could slog in the last few overs of LOI. He was sent as #3 for a trial I believe to give momentum to the chase. He would need to work on his game to play as a regular member of a LOI team. A proper bat would not get out on a hit-me fulltoss.

The same Umar Akmal who has Sharjeel Khan as his role model in terms of fitness, here is a latest snippet of Umar "Better than Kohli" Akmal

I think Asif is a decent bat, and tried hard in both t20 matches. If he could use this intent of staying longer in ODIs, he could be a match winner for Pakistan.

I like Asif Ali and think he is a perfect option for our team. We need a power hitter like him at No.6.

What is the shame in getting out to a delivery like that?

You would probably have Asad Shafiq in the ODI team

Read my post again and this time slowly so that you understand. The point of the video was to show Umar Akmal's "physical shape"

Amazing that you can tell his physical shape all the way from home

The size of someone doesn't matter, I've seen him play recently, he's been running between wickets well, fielding well and batting really well.

We don't have many players of his profile so we need to give him a chance to succeed.

Anyone who wants Asif Ali gone doesn't understand LOI cricket.

Tell us why a specialist batsman averaging 20's is good for Pakistan then

We can talk about his average after a large sample set has been collected.

Still early days for him. Has the ingredients to hit pacers and spinners hard. Doesn't need to average 40+ if he can strike at 140+ SR.

I see you're still an UA fan.

Technically, you're right and UA still has good talent.

But, he has lost the application. Would give him a chance to prove his worth though.

Asif Ali is a must..in fact we need more of him to compete with the best in the world...at least a couple more.

If we dont..we'll have imam, babar, sarfi, malik, hafeez, haris etc...

A recipe for 250-270 score every game
..not enough!

...Saud shakèel and the likes of riz are a replacement for the mediocre six, not asif ali.

This thread is so wrong, it's funny.

Asif needs a long rope, at least until WC. Simply put you get rid of him, it's back to Pakistan "not posting modern-day totals", "resorting back to TTFs", "carrying too many accumulators" and "having no power game". I'm not saying that Asif is THE key to us posting high scores but you gotta look at the fact that he has natural ball striking ability and must be groomed. This takes time and now until WC is ideal for him to be groomed as Pakistan play a good amount of ODI/T20 cricket.

Take him out and replace him with which power hitter. He may average 20 but we need his sr more than his average. I agree that he should just open with fakhar as he looked decent in the t20s and at 6 we can get a bigger hitter like Sohail akhtar or any other one .

I agree Umar is certainly in better shape than he was. I'm not too fussed if he's a slightly podgy as long as he passes the fitness test, and can run well between the wickets. Sharjeel looked in far worse shape when he was in the team, as did Sarfraz for a short period.

I think he has to be tried out again in T20s at least due to his ability. Though the PSL is coming up soon, I reckon we should wait till then, see how he does. Should be his main focus, impressing in the PSL. I also think we can probably wait till the world cup is over before starting to try include him in ODIs again, as I assume Hafeez and Malik will retire from LOIs at least freeing up some spots.

Think he should just inevitably just focus on getting domestic experience under him, and getting his fitness as good as he can get it before getting called up. It's inevitable I think, and I don't think he should feel pressured to try and get back into the team before the world cup.
