Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed speaking after end of 5th ODI

"It was a tough series and first of all credit to the NZ team as they played very well throughout the series"

"Our batting did not click throughout the series and we lost due to that reason"

"Our bowling unit did well but we also had some opportunities during the series but we did not grab those"

"We will continue to back our team and some of our youngsters like Faheem, Aamer and Nawaz played really well so hopefully we will decide on a good team line-up for the T20 series"

"Our youngsters batted well and that is a positive sign for the team"

What about your batting sarfaraz?

We can see in the field that he is a good captain. But what about his freaking batting?

Pakistan did very well to make the last 2 games interesting.

The batting was a major flop in this series. Needs a serious revamp to bring it to modern standards.

Our opening bowlers also need to be changed. Amir is just not doing enough. Someone needs to tell him playing for Pakistan is an honour and he needs to bring his A-game every time unless he just can't.

I know this isn't really an excuse, but I also feel that hardly any luck went our way in this series whatsoever (maybe a little in the last ODI).

Top 6 apart from Fakhar failed miserably throughout. Haris came in the last 2 and added some solidity.

Make him a non playing captain. I wish if that was possible I would have made Ganguly India's captain again.

Younger guys are allowed to fail, not the seniors.... unless they average > 40 and have an 85+ strike rate.
For me the major issues were hafeez and Malik and Sarfaraz hiding behind these 2.

The outcome was predicted.

I was not hopping that Pakistan would win but i was really disappointing in our pace bowling attack in NZ.

Our team is on right path with good youngster like Shadab, Nawaz, Faheem, Imad, Yamin, Babar, Harris and Hassan.

What i think is that this should be the last match hafez and let nawaz or Yamin take his place.

Sarfraz is right. There were quite a few positives in the series. But there were a lot of negatives too, and they mostly occuopy the top half of the batting order.

Why is it that no one ever comments upon the seniors. Why doesn't the captain ever come out and say,"the youngsters have done well but the seniors need to step up and make their presence felt".

Revamp required in the batting line-up. A poor man's England is better than an associate level batting line-up. Look at that embarrassing T20 squad.

There are few positives. Youngsters performed well, Haris Sohail looked in touch and seniors were exposed again.

We have been hearing about this positive for a while now. You throw in new and inexperienced players and they end up impressing one way or another.

When will we have that the senior players should their worth and guided us home?

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed has blamed his side’s 5-0 ODI series whitewash against New Zealand on a lack of runs.

Despite a flurry of late-order runs in the fifth and final match in Wellington, Pakistan fell 15 runs short of the Black Caps’ 271/7 after another poor return from their top six. Of them, only Haris Sohail (63) passed 12 and after 17 overs the tourists were 57/5.

It was all a little familiar for Sarfraz, who himself only managed 3 from No.6.

“New Zealand are a very good team, they played well throughout the series. The main thing was batting, that’s why we lost the series.”

As well as paying tribute to his bowlers, who never let the hosts get away, Sarfraz did recognise the spirit of the lower-order. No.7 Shadab Khan (54) put on 105 with Haris Sohail to give Pakistan a chance, and they remained in the game until the penultimate over thanks to brisk runs from Fahim Ashraf (23), Aamer Yamin (32*) and Mohammad Nawaz (23).

“We back our team. And there are some positive things. The lower order played very well today, Fahim, Aamer Yamin, Nawaz.
“The bowling unit were very good. Sometimes we had opportunities but we didn’t grab them.”

Martin Guptill, named Man of the Match for his even 100 off 126 balls, and Man of the Series for his 310 runs at 78 across the five matches, echoed Sarfraz’s comments on the Pakistan bowlers.

Martin Guptill's hundred anchored New Zealand's innings

“It certainly is [a very good Pakistan bowling attack]. They made it extremely tough for us to get the run-rate up in the middle of the innings in each game. They found a length that was hard to get away. Credit to them for the way they bowled.

The tall right-hander said the pitches on offer hadn’t brought out his most free-flowing form but was pleased with the way he and his colleagues had built partnerships throughout the summer.

“They have [been tough wickets] throughout the whole series. There hasn’t been that big 300 score yet, we’ve had to do a lot of hard graft with the bat and it proves that those partnerships we’ve been able to create have actually got us through to some good match-winning totals.

“I’ve been in reasonable form. It hasn’t been my most fluent work but sometimes you’ve got to score the tough runs and just eke it out a wee bit in the middle.

“I just try to be in good solid positions to hit from. I haven’t had a high boundary count, I’ve been able to get off strike and create partnerships and that’s been able to get us through and get some match-winning contributions.”

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson paid tribute to returning quick bowler Matt Henry, who ripped out the top three before returning to take the final wicket to end with 4-53.

Henry was brought into the side to replace the rested Trent Boult ahead of the T20I series.

“He’s been chomping at the bit to come in and get a game and he was outstanding today with the new ball. Whenever he’s come in he’s performed really well for us. It’ great to have so many fast bowlers ready to go and it was nice for him to get his opportunity today.”
Williamson praised his side’s resilience throughout the series.

“There was a lot of cricket in a short period of time and the guys backed it up really well and adapted well on the different surfaces and played smart cricket.”

The three-match T20I series begins on Monday.

Time for some new young batsmen to be backed in side and all the deadwood removed from the side.

Shadab, Faheem, Yamin, Nawaz. Will be interesting to see how the lower order will look in the future.

Imad will probably replace Nawaz.
And I don't know if Yamin can retain his place with Amir, Hassan in the attack

Regarding Imad and Nawaz bowling wise, they seem to be about equal when it pertains to restricting the batsman. When it comes to batting, Imad's not a natural power hitter (some days he pulls it off, some days he doesn't) and Nawaz was looking pretty good in the last game (granted, would like to see a bit more of him batting in the future to make a proper judgment). I guess for these two, it'll come down to their batting prowess.

For Yamin, yeah with Amir and Hassan to come back, he won't retain his place but his batting capabilities should be noted of at the very least.

Nawaz is in my view a better cricketer than Nawaz, but happy to have them both in the squad. The key for me is that all of these young guys: faheem, yamin, shadab, imad, nawaz can bat higher than what they allowed to bat right now because you have guys like malik/hafeez/azhar playing ahead of them.
These players will get ruined if we try to convert them to the next razzaq. they should bat higher

I'm assuming, in your view, you meant Nawaz is a better cricketer than Imad? But yeah, good point they should bat higher; at the very least, I feel Shadab can definitely bat higher and judging from the way Nawaz was playing in the last game so can he (need to see him play more though). At the same time you wanna have guys for late order hitting and Faheem and Yamin fit the bill nicely, not sure about Imad but he can have a go as well if he's in the XI. Overall with these guys briefly showcasing their abilities, as well as taking into account the top order failures (minus Fakhar and Haris) in this series, it'll be interesting to see what LOI XI Pak will play in the future for WC prep.

Why is it that no one ever comments upon the seniors. Why doesn't the captain ever come out and say,"the youngsters have done well but the seniors need to step up and make their presence felt".

Because in Pakistan they have this respect culture for seniors and dont have the audacity to question their perfrmance. Javed Miadad is big on this. When Shahid Afridi attacked him verbally he was like "I'm your senior"

I.e. you shouldnt be talking to me like that. Regardless is he was in the wrong

But you need to drop the so called seniors like Hafez, Malik, Azhar for ever and you need to bat in middle order and some young guns like Sahibzada, Talat should be tried in place of these oldies, Nawaz should be there in place of imad

I don't think this team can even win three games (they'll play nine) in the wc19..may be one shock win against a top team and two against smaller teams like Bangladesh, Windies (if they qualify) or Ireland/Zimbabwe/Afghanistan.
Need their bowlers to fire on all cylinders if they want to get to semis...Coz this batting line up looks terrible... maybe weaker than Bangladesh in odis

This same team has the players, skills and talent to rack up 350 against the best bowling attacks in the world. Its just that whatever could fail, failed and failed by epic proportions. We failed to climatise to the conditions quickly enough and relied too much on garbage like Azhar, Hafeez, Malik. Play the team that played the last match, but remove Hafeez for someone like Hussain Talat and induct the pace troika of Amir, Hasan and Junaid and we will be back to our winning ways.

Scapegoating Hafeez is not right, he scored 60 and 81 in 2 matches. He did way better than Babar

Do you not see the long-term dangers of the team for it to include Hafeez solely for his batting? Don’t pretend to be so naive.

That’s why it’s imperative that we build our limited overs around these yonugesters who so far have only been given a game here and there and no time to understand their roles and settle down in them. But, it’s about time now that we give them a long run and see how it pans out as we anyway are getting owned by teams even with the so called experienced irreplaceable seniors.
I felt our limited overs team should more or less look like the one we fielded in the last odi against kiwis with some minor tweaks. Below is the team I would wish to see Pakistan employing for the next year or so at least.
1. Fakhar
2. Sahibzada Farhan/ Amin.
3. Babar.
4. Haris.
5. Sarfaraz.
6. shadab.
7. Yamin ( Imad or Nawaz for Asian cond)
8. Faheem.
9. Hassan.
10. Amir
11. Junaid/. Shinwari/ Rumaan or some performer from the domestic.

However, we all know for a fact how indispensable Hafeez and Malik are in the eyes of an out dated pcb think tank who are still stuck in 70s where nepotism and mis-governance are run in the mill stuff
So I high doubt that we would ever get to field a team that’s not plagued by this so called senior junior mentality.

Though he scored them with 60% dot balls... he is right why because these seniors has a small sample size to show as their performances to get the seniority tag to stay in the squad and in my opinion Hafeez got them covered for his stay in the team..He is the player blessed in all 3 facets of the game, who can drop catches, chuck while bowling and tuk tuk while batting...
