Islamabad, May 30 A three-star retired Pakistan Army General has been sentenced to 14 years rigorous imprisonment and a retired Brigadier to death sentence on charges of espionage by military courts, it was announced Thursday.

A doctor associated with a sensitive organisation was also handed the capital punishment on similar charges, according to a brief statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the military.

Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa endorsed the punishment to the officers on the charges of espionage/leakage of sensitive information to foreign agencies prejudice to national security, the statement said.

The officers – identified by the ISPR as Lieutenant General (retd) Javed Iqbal, Brigadier (retd) Raja Rizwan, and Doctor Wasim Akram – were tried under the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) and Official Secret Act by separate Field General Court Martial for separate cases, the Express Tribune reported.

Lt Gen (retd) Iqbal has been awarded 14 years rigorous imprisonment, while Brigadier (retd) Rizwan has been handed the death sentence. Dr. Akram, who, according to the ISPR, was employed at a sensitive organisation, has also been given the death penalty.

The ISPR statement did not contain any further details of the offences committed by the three, but Director General ISPR Maj-Gen Asif Ghafoor had confirmed the arrests of the senior officers in a press conference on February 22 this year, Geo News reported.

"There are two officers who are under military custody on the charges of espionage. The Army chief has ordered Field General Court Marshal for them," Ghafoor had said.

"Both of these are individual case and are not linked to each other, and there is no network as such," he said.

"Keep in mind that, if we have been able to get them and identify the issue, it is a success," the army spokesman said.

According to statistics, some 400 officers of different ranks have been given various punishments, including reprimand, warning, caution, salary-cut, dismissal from service, and even imprisonment, during the last two years, the Express Tribune reported.

In my view, Pakistan army sentenced these three officers for spying for the CIA. Dr wasim akram is a scientist at Pakistan's main nuclear missile production facility (NDC) who also got death sentence.ISI was able to apprehend the trio after they got tipped off by China.

Hopefully Pakistani leftists don’t start supporting these three and declare them champions of democracy.

But only democratic leaders get sentences and army gets away with everything :) #FakeLiberals

Mariam Nawaz should have also got done over for treason and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mombati brigade arriving soon to support these 3

Haha, I bet they will. Anyways now is the time for other traitors to start crapping in their pants. If Army officers can meet such fate then who is gonna save the rest of the lot.

I think its inappropriate for anyone hailing a death sentence on another person

So hold on here.

People are praising the army (an unelected institution) for ordering a death sentence through a military court? Where is the accountability? How can we have faith in this decision making process? What legal credential do the decision makers in this process have?

The fact is that we can't, and it is very sad to see that people are actively praising the military for passing a death sentence without even questioning why and how this can happen.

They were court martialed.

A court-martial is a military court or a trial conducted in such a court. A court-martial is empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law, and, if the defendant is found guilty, to decide upon punishment. In addition, courts-martial may be used to try prisoners of war for war crimes. The Geneva Convention requires that POWs who are on trial for war crimes be subject to the same procedures as would be the holding military's own forces. Finally, courts-martial can be convened for other purposes, such as dealing with violations of martial law, and can involve civilian defendants.

While this a good decision, but for all the fools celebrating that there is accountability in army.

These are not corruption charges, these are espionage charges.
COme and boost about army's accountability when they place forward corruption charges.

also there is difference between treason and espionage, plz dont mix the two

By the way, did these traitors or "assets" caused any damage? I just read that Dr. Wasim Akram Tarrar was deputy chief at NDC. A man in his position can reveal a lot of crucial info.

I’d rather not say more than that the damage has already been done and cannot be undone.

Any comment on the trillion stolen by Billo and family? Thought not!

Who is we? Can you please stop speaking for the rest of Pakistani and refer your concern as “I”. Thank you

You clearly don't know what a court martial is, I suggest you stay in school and maybe travel a bit more.

This is not a new thing that army convict its personnel, I remember some high officials were punished for corruption in raheel sharif's time too. But only in Pakistan traitors like bhutto rule the country from grave & thief like nawaz from jail.

Good news. Traitors should rightfully be hanged. No mercy.

One thing we need to understand is that spies and moles exist in every country and military/intelligence organizations. Our intelligence services should learn from this and should take counter measures.

why? Are these politicians involved in espionage?

Yes, think of NS and Modi, and what happened on the border shelling as his Panama trial was going on in the SC, think of Hussain Haqqani and his relationship with AZ and the CIA. So the short answer is yes.

Imagine someone like Buttler or Ponting praising & calling for the death of one of their army officials on social media. So bizarre.

People are not outraged because these individuals are Army men. Had they been politicians/workers of any major political party you’d see people on the streets. Political party members and workers also engage in espionage but 10/10 times get away with it because of weak civil courts.

Wow that guy is dense. In every nation an army has the right to hold court martial.

They stopped being "army officers" when they were doing espionage. They became traitors and a traitor doesn't deserve any sympathy.

The doctor was working for a "sensitive organization".... most likely was a research scientist in the nuclear facilities leaking info to USA or someone.

Even civil courts are unelected! So whats your point? Have you heard about court martial? You have a lot of reading to do.

My Point is that it is totally unacceptable in 2019 for military courts to be passing death sentences.

Nowhere in real democracies does this happen in 2019. Nowhere do you have sportsmen praising such a decision.

I can understand your pain. Watching a patriot pashtun from Fata supporting Pak Army openly and fully is not something PTM supporters want to see

do you even know what espionage means??

Yes, but this nonsense won't end till there are laws prohibiting Army Officers and their kids from going to NATO / NATO-puppet countries whether for vacation, education or anything else. Instead, we send our best General Officers to the States for War College (or to the UK/Canada.) We need to send them to China, Turkey, Russia and/or Iran, that will bring its own benefits.

A silver lining is that sellouts rarely ever do it for RAW because they really aren’t considered as having actual tangible power or guarantee of a good future to offer. On the other hand CIA/western agencies can offer a green card/passport and money in a Dubai account.

Do you actually have short term memory? In Raheel sharif's tenure someone senior official was punished on corruption charges & that is the time when media starts saying that army set the example themselves.

again, sharheel sharif taking an action or two makes no difference.

There are laws that dont apply on the millitary, the whole system needs to be changed.

It doesn't matter if Raheel Shareef catches 1 or 2 people. THat doesn't mean that there is accountability all of a sudden.

Good point made & one thing which nobody noticed or discussed that the secret information which they have passed is passed, so what about this. I mean information is not a tangible thing which can be taken back. 2 of them are very high rank personnel so the information would have been top confidential too.

Yeah, the damage that is done can't be undone. Well entrenched plans cannot be changed easily. Changing them requires resources and time.

Look I will be the last person who defend army but give the credit where due. I have seen the press conf of army spokesman of that time & according to him its normal course & armymen are being punished time to time on corruption charges but this was the prominent case so it get media attention.

This excerpt is from UCMJ - US Military Uniform Code of Military Justice
Courts-martial are conducted under the UCMJ and the Manual for Courts-Martial United States. If the trial results in a conviction, the case is reviewed by the convening authority – the commanding officer who referred the case for trial by court-martial. The convening authority has discretion to mitigate the findings and sentence, set aside convictions, and/or to remand convictions and/or sentences back to a court-martial for re-hearing.

If the sentence, as approved by the convening authority, includes death, a bad conduct discharge, a dishonorable discharge, dismissal of an officer, or confinement for one year or more, the case is reviewed by an intermediate court. There are four such courts – the Army Court of Criminal Appeals, the Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals, the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals, and the Coast Guard Court of Criminal Appeals.

Last time I checked, US was the greatest of all democracies..... (or so they say)

Have a detailed read at your leisure.

You have no point. You are content with Sharif courts of the 90s that were dictated by those goons. Should I pull out the infamous telephone conversation? Surely it will be on Youtube.
