Interesting company. Two greats in Suttcliffe & Gavaskar and Atherton a very good test player too.

Babar not finished yet but somewhere between excellent & great with the best maybe still to come.

Anyone who can face 400 balls as a modern player may just have a big future in Test cricket...
 
What a innings from Abdullah Shafiq so far, will have to go down as one of the best innings in a long time.
 
I think play will resume may be in couple of hours, forecast for galle is not that bad till 6pm.

Amazing. Two of them are playing in 2022 together and the others are from a couple of decades ago at least

Indeed.

In recorded history of test cricket, spanning more than 140 years, not many people have faced 400 deliveries in the 4th innings. Especially in SC and particularly in SL.

It is a very special innings.

SL spinners have been relentless from the first delivery.

Freakish level of concentration.
 
This would be my team for the second test:

Abdullah
Imam (I was desperate enough to be thinking about Sarfraz in this spot earlier, but Imam and Abdullah have good chemistry and Imam did well in the second innings)
Shan Masood (only based on current form, I'm not a big fan of his)
Babar Azam
Fawad Alam/Saud Shakeel (poor Saud Shakeel's career has been almost wasted already, should have been a regular at least five years ago)
Mohammad Rizwan
Mohammad Nawaz
Nauman Ali (because we didn't bring anyone else; have to make Zafar, Asghar, or other young spinners regular parts of the team)
Yasir Shah (regrettably)
Hassan Ali
Shaheen Shah Afridi

Kamran Ghulam and Saud Shakeel have to be worked in in the future, and also Dahani.

They'll probably only replace Agha Salman with Fawad Alam. That's as far as they'll go.
 
It is raining hard and don't know how much time will it take to get the ground ready once it stops. These two should have slogged a little in the last 20 runs .
 
This is why more positive approach is needed in batting. Batting at 2 an over has cost Pakistan a famous victory as things stand.

Indeed , Sri Lanka scored 330+ in 100 overs in the last innings. And Pakistan is still chasing the target in the 124th over.

Agha and Azhar both played such useless knocks, didn't score and just wasted time.

Sri Lanka had a very defensive field. They were getting easy singles and slogging is not easy on this wicket.

It will take around 20 minutes to get all covers off and in that time you have to hope that it doesn't rain again otherwise more delays.

Which means Azhar, agha and 5th bowler will be retained.

Lets be real here if we win here its been with 8 players.

Yesterday talk was about match finishing by Tea, today we are unhappy about why it took so long.

Pakistan won't become a top team until they start playing a proper XI.

Pak has to close this in 2-3 overs maximum.
Sri lanka will continue with defensive fields.

Luck is there as rain has stopped ( in sri lanka it does not happen very often).

True, they're going to win, and might even keep Agha Salman! And Azhar for sure is coming back. Plus SSA will be there, fit or not fit. Because, as you said, "winning combination."

By the way, I think Azhar will do the decent thing and retire from international cricket after this series.
 
Just little rain has taken away so much time from the match. 30 minutes still to go for resumption and have to hope it doesn't rain till then.
 
Wow this has been a serious run chase by Pakistan. I tuned out after Azhar Ali got out thinking it'd be a similar Pakistan collapse. But what a knock by Shafique. Probably the best 4th innings knock i have ever seen in the subcontinent.

Yes, cant thing of a better one in the last decade or so at least.
 
Pakistan have flopped in much easier 4th inn chases, so this is a fabulous effort.

Obviously the team combination must be looked at. 3 pacers in SL is overkill with Naseem being a passenger with the ball in this match. We're also a batsman light with Rizwan batting a spot too high.

However we may finally have a world class Test opener in Abdullah Shafique after years of searching. A tight slap to a certain individual who's not having a good month of predictions after saying Stokes/McCullum would be a disaster for ENG.

Low chances of rain as it stands. Its 5:00 PM (Srl time) onwards that the chance of rain will be going upwards and there might be rain.

Even if they wanted 3 seamers considering Srl plays spin well and we dont have many quality spinners then Faheem could have been an option as he would have given that extra batting depth as well.

They were batting according to the time remaining in the match. This is a test match not a 10 over bash!!

Just play naturally
Jayasuriya can easily wipe out 9, 10 and 11.
The maximum it will take is 6 overs anyhow. No need to change the method at all.

Well said. Win, lose or draw - this has been one of the ATG innings in the context of the state of the match. 4th innings. Away from home. Chasing a big total. Spinning 4th and 5th day track. What. A. Performance.

Remember how Aussies did here a week ago against the same team and with the benefit of more practice and a 1-0 lead in the series.
