Islamabad: Pakistan has turned its green ambitions into reality by achieving UN Climate Action Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-13) a decade ahead of the 2030 deadline.

“This is an outstanding achievement for Pakistan to attain the crucial ‘Goal 13 - Climate Action’ well before the 2030 deadline”, Malik Amin Aslam, Advisor to Prime Minister on Climate Change, told Gulf News. “With this milestone, Pakistan has demonstrated its commitment to the clean and green future and contribution to global efforts to tackle the challenge of climate change,” he said.

How Pakistan achieved the green goal?

Pakistan’s continuous efforts and initiatives of large-scale afforestation, biodiversity conservation, investment in clean energy, electric vehicles and green jobs to combat climate change impacts have earned the country worldwide acclaim, said Aslam. Detailing some of the key green projects he mentioned 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Program, Clean Green Pakistan Initiative, Clean Green Pakistan Index, Protected Areas Initiative (15 new national parks), Ecosystem Restoration Fund for facilitating green growth and policies consistent with the objectives of Pakistan’s Nationally Determined Contribution and attaining Land Degradation Neutrality. These initiatives have been taken to prevent and to be better prepared for the threat of climate change experienced by the country such as floods, heat waves, droughts and melting glaciers.

Transition to green economy and clean energy

Transition to green economy and green future is at the core of Pakistan government’s policies spearheaded by Prime Minister Imran Khan. The government has initiated steps to “convert China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project into China Pakistan Green Economic Corridor project”, the premier’s aide said. “We have deferred 2740 MW of imported coal projects signed by the previous government and replaced it by zero-carbon and hydropower projects of 3700 MW” the advisor informed. “This shift [towards clean energy] shows the government’s commitment to climate-friendly and sustainable development beneficial for both Pakistan and the global community.”

Green achievement hailed

UNDP Pakistan hailed the achievement with this message on Twitter: “Pakistan has achieved SDG13‬ well before the 2030 deadline with the technical support from ‪UNDP‬”. It was also shared that “‪UNDP in Pakistan‬ and ‪Climate Change PK‬ celebrate the achievement of ‪SDG13‬ and our longstanding strategic partnership.”‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Pakistan’s Green Stimulus package announced in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to protect nature while offering green jobs to ‘guardians of nature’ was highly appreciated by global experts. “This is an excellent model for linking economic development with a new deal for nature” said Dr Kathy MacKinnon, Chair of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas.

UN SDGs for a better and sustainable world

The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all UN member states in 2015, offers a roadmap to achieve a better and sustainable future. The 17 SDGs are an urgent call for action by all countries to improve health and education, water and sanitation, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth while tackling climate change and preserving the environment.

PM asks world to act fast against climate change to save endangered generations

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan Thursday warned the world that as ice at poles melted fast and temperatures rose globally, any negligence towards the climate change could put the future generations in danger.

“If the world does not take notice now, I am afraid we will be endangering our future generations,” the prime minister said in a video statement at the fourth Austrian World Summit held in capital Vienna.

The prime minister, on the invitation of Arnold Schwarzenegger, former California governor and actor, shared his vision about conserving biodiversity and the steps taken by Pakistan to fight the climate change.

Imran Khan said some 20 years ago, the topic of climate change was taken with skepticism, however, today it had become a harsh reality.

He mentioned the ‘cruel face’ of climate change for the world in shape of record temperatures in Siberia, ice-melting on poles, rising temperatures in Europe, unprecedented fires ravaging Australia, cyclones and hurricanes.

He said Pakistan realized about a decade ago that the glaciers that flew to its rivers and ultimately fed the population, were melting at a much faster pace.

He recalled that his political party when came to power some seven years ago in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province, set and achieved the target of planting one billion trees there.

On assuming power at the Centre, he said, the target was now to plant 10 billion for a green Pakistan.

He urged the world to collaborate and join hands to fight the climate change.

“It is time for the world to take action against climate change as a united goal,” he said.

Others world leaders, who addressed the event, included Federal President Austria Alexander Van der Bellen, President of the Slovak Republic Zuzana Caputová, President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanovic, Executive Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans, Former United States Secretary of State John Kerry and Founder Austrian World Summit Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Those, who spoke through video statement, included Prince of Wales Charles, Prime Minister of Spain and United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

The Austrian World Summit in four years has become the largest environmental gathering in the world, providing a platform for global decision-makers committed to preserving a healthy planet and de-carbonizing the economy by 2050.

Pakistan Inducted into Global Champions for Nature by World Economic Forum

In recognition of the environmentally-conscious policies enacted by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Pakistan has been inducted into the Global Champions for Nature community by the World Economic Forum.

In a statement yesterday by the international forum, Pakistan will now be part of “a community of leaders disrupting business-as-usual to lead the way to a nature-positive global economy and halt nature loss by 2030”. Malik Amin Aslam, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, announced the development on Twitter, adding that Pakistan is now part of a multilateral community, in recognition of the government’s various initiatives to combat climate hazards - with the World Economic Forum recognising Prime Minister Imran Khan’s strategy to combat climate change as a “win-win” earlier this year.

According to the official letter of recognition shared by the minister, it stated that “your country’s holistic approach to fighting climate change, nature degradation, and loss of livelihoods holds lessons for us all”. In August, over a million volunteers of the Prime Minister “Tiger Force” (a collection of social-service volunteers), were part of the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Initiative, with a green stimulus package being announced to promote plantation, set up nurseries and natural forests, to create jobs and restore the natural ecosystem in the process.

Sadly these achievements mean little for the Pakistani awaam who are more concerned about their day to day problems. But this is perhaps the first time we have a leader who is looking at the larger issues and is not only focusing primarily on the issues which will guarantee him a re-election victory

Full credit to IK and PTI for their commitments on this.

Apart from the environmental benefits, there’s good soft power/propaganda potential here. Exploit it.

Which methods should be used to exploit it?

Pakistan doesn't have the money to pay expanded coverage.

invite foreign film makers or netflix to make nature documentaries in pak

find some usp to differentiate between national parks, which could be marketed, a la snow leopards

maybe get in some team of life scientists to research something which could be used to differentiate "green pakistan"

theres loads of things that can be done on small budgets and expanded if they appear promising

And the least that could be done is Pakistanis could highlight these achievements on social media like twitter. Make those hashtags trend.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday responded to queries as to why Pakistan was not invited to the United States' climate summit, which will see leaders of China and Russia in attendance.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are among the 40 world leaders invited to the summit, to be held on April 22-23, according to a White House statement. Pakistan has not been invited to the event.

Economies Forum on Energy and Climate, which brings together leaders from countries responsible for approximately 80% of global emissions and GDP," the Foreign Office's statement said.

According to the statement, the summit also includes representation from countries holding chairs of geographic regions and groups, including Least Developed Countries, Small Island Developing States, and Climate Vulnerable Forum.

"Pakistan, despite being among the top ten countries affected by Climate Change, is one of the lowest emitters – with less than 1% of the global emissions," it said.

The Foreign Office underlined Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change. "Prime Minister Imran Khan’s leadership on this account is well accepted and appreciated around the world."

The government’s landmark initiatives like the Billion Tree Tsunami have won international acclaim, including from the World Economic Forum, it said.

The Foreign Office said the country is meaningfully contributing to shaping the global climate change discourse. Pakistan also co-chaired the multi-billion-dollar Green Climate Fund, established to support climate actions in developing countries, last year.

"Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our times that can only be countered through inclusive, cooperative, and forward-looking policies. Pakistan remains fully committed to playing its due role in this fight," it added.

Biden’s Earth Day global summit on climate is part of his efforts to elevate climate change as a top priority. It will be held virtually given pandemic restrictions and live-streamed for public viewing.

As per the Global Climate Risk Index 2021, issued by German Watch, Pakistan is the fifth-most vulnerable country to climate change.

The Foreign Office responded after there was much hue and cry over the US administration not calling Pakistan to the summit, as PM Imran Khan's government had taken steps to battle climate change.
