Pakistan announce T20I squad for tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe

Not a big deal. 1 negative out of 35. Just isolate and bring him in after the negative test

Pakistan cricket team captain, Babar Azam, has found himself surrounded by a controversy. The young skipper is said to have breached Covid-19 protocols by meeting the Director General (DG) of Punjab (Pakistan) Sports Board.

Babar is said to have gone to meet Adnan Irshad on Wednesday seeking his help to resolve some issues related to his local club.

The 26-year-old is preparing for the forthcoming tour of South Africa and had gone his first Covid-19 test at the National High-Performance Centre on Tuesday. With the result of the test awaited, Azam was instructed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to remain indoors and avoid meeting outsiders but he didn't follow the instructions.

As per Cricket Pakistan, Babar met the Director-General and straight away went to his car despite being approached by the media. The cricketer is said to have left the location in a hurry in order to avoid any confrontation with media personnel.

Babar has been in the news of late, with the most recent reason being the disagreement between him and the selectors over squad selection in the national team. He has received the backing of former skippers Shahid Afridi and Inzamam-ul-Haq in this fight against the board.

“Babar Azam will lead the team in the middle and will be responsible for the team’s performances. Hence, his suggestions should hold more value during squad selection,” Afridi told Cricket Pakistan.

Inzamam also held similar views on the subject. He said: "Babar Azam is not impressed with the team selection, and Mohammad Wasim is saying ‘it’s not your concern’. How can Mohammad Wasim say such a thing to Babar Azam? This is surprising. Now, where are those statements of Mohammad Wasim and the policies of the board saying that the captain will have the full authority and will have the main role in the selection?”

Pakistan's tour of South Africa will begin on April 02, with the two teams scheduled to lock horns in a 3-match ODI series. After the completion of the ODI series, Pakistan and South Africa will lock horns in 3 T20Is.

After the tour of South Africa, Pakistan will visit Zimbabwe for two Tests and three T20Is.

South Africa-bound squad will be joined by 7 cricketers in pre-departure camp

Lahore, 18 March 2021:

The South Africa-bound Pakistan men’s national team will be joined by seven cricketers in the pre-departure camp, which commences at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, 19 March.

These players – Amad Butt, Faisal Akram, Khushdil Shah, Muhammad Imran, Naseem Shah, Shahnawaz Dahani and Zahid Mahmood – have been invited so that the coaching staff continues to work on their development.

Being part of the pre-departure camp for the white-ball cricketers provides an opportunity for Shahnawaz and Zahid, who received maiden call-ups in the Test side last week, to find their rhythm before they embark on journey for Zimbabwe with the Test players on 12 April.

Meanwhile, the men’s national selection committee has also invited Azam Khan and Sohaib Maqsood at the National High Performance Centre in Lahore as the selectors continue to reward the top domestic performers and expand the pool of players. The pair will work with the world-renowned NHPC coaches.

Following the departure of the white-ball squad for South Africa on 26 March, the players who have been dropped from the national side but remain in consideration for the national team will also be invited at the NHPC where they will work on various physical and technical aspects of the game.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim: “The decision to invite these nine players, seven to work with the national team and two at the NHPC, is a continuation of our ambition to keep our elite cricketers in rhythm and provide them the desired skill work so they are ready for the national side whenever they are called up.

“Previously, we had conducted a camp of 25 players, who remain at the periphery of the men’s side, during the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 with the same idea. I am certain that these players will benefit from the presence of top-quality coaches and these off-season initiatives will help them enhance their skill-set.”

Faisal Akram brought in to help us read Tabraiz Shamsi..how have not worked harder to find a chinaman

why asad shafiq had not picked in test squad for the tour of south africa and zimbabwe.

Because they finally realized their mistake. Asad Shafiq does not have courage & can't stand pressure at international level. But played far too long without any match winning performances.

Good to see Waqar advising Dhani.

LAHORE – For the first time in history, the national flag carrier PIA will fly directly to South Africa along with the national cricket team for the upcoming bilateral cricket series.

A special chartered flight, in a Boeing 777, will leave for Johannesburg on March 26.

Reports in local media suggest PCB had requested for a chartered plane from the national flag-carrier owing to the health of the players who can be exposed to the coronavirus while travelling on a commercial flight.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a permit to the special PIA flight, allowing it to bring along Pakistani passengers on its way back on March 27.

According to a PIA spokesperson, the Pakistani embassy in Johannesburg has initiated preparations to register the names of the civilian passengers who will travel on the rare flight. He said that South Africa is one of the Category-C countries and assured that all coronavirus SOPs specified by the Pakistan government will be implemented on the flight.

A member of the South Africa-bound Pakistan men’s cricket team, who had last week tested positive, has now returned two negative tests. As such, he will enter the bio-secure bubble on 23 March where he will remain in isolation for 24 hours, following which he will undergo two further tests on 24 March.

If the results of both the tests are negative, then he will be allowed to integrate with the side and cleared to travel to Johannesburg on 26 March.

Meanwhile, all the remaining 34 members of the side, presently attending a training camp in Lahore, cleared their third Covid-19 tests conducted on 21 March.

Their final tests will be conducted on 24 March.

According to Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman, Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) travel ban will not affect Pakistan’s tour to South Africa.

The government was aware of the team’s tour as the cricket board had asked for permission from authorities to hold the training camp in Lahore, said the PCB spokesman.

Earlier, the aviation body imposed certain new restrictions adding 12 African countries to a list of travel prohibited destinations which included South Africa, in Category C.

The countries included this category are banned from travelling to Pakistan due to the growing number of coronavirus cases.

Reportedly, on 26th March Pakistan team will travel to South Africa through a chartered flight and are scheduled to play three one-day internationals and four T20 internationals against Proteas from April 2 to April 16 in Johannesburg and Centurion.

Furthermore, the spokesperson added that the national team would complete a three-day quarantine period in South Africa while practice will be allowed for those players who clear the COVID-19 test upon arrival.

After the completion of the white-ball series in South Africa, the team will go to Zimbabwe through a commercial flight where they will play three T20Is and two Tests. The team will head back home on May 12 through a chartered flight.

This is a strange squad - why no Zaman as he averaged 60+ at a sr of 140 + in Pakistan's premier t20 comp? why is Danish Aziz there who wasnt even picked in said comp? Wasim Jr and no Danawi?

Strange and unprofessional selections yet again.

Dhani is being overhyped in my opinion (great kid that's got a bright future) but for t20 he's not suitable with that economy rate he has.

Danish Aziz is my pick right now as a lower order hitter in t20s, he has the power to win games out of nowhere in my view.

The reason why i think zaman didnt get into the t20 team is becouse i belive only 1 will play if both were picked in the t20 squad . For example if Fakhar performs in the odi he will most likely play in t20 and sharjeel will have to miss out to commedate either babar or rizwan. This way sharjeel plays t20s and fakhar plays odis.

As for danish he has finished games in t20s and has a few performance in pakistan cup he has a excellent temprement.

Dahani performance well in first class and did resonably well in psl but he is more suited to first class and wasim is encouraging people to play the longer format.wasim is a suprise pick and is only thier for cover for fahim ashraf

Other thing is that Sharjeel just edged Fakhar in terms of PSL performances which was why he was preferred.

Pakistan are in need of a lower order hitter, if Pakistan needs to make adjustments in their line-up then do it now so everyone settles into their role.

I will say play haider at 5 for the time being as i expect sharjeel or fakhar to partner Rizwan at the top with babar batting at 3 and hafeez coming in at 4 in t20s.in odis il try danish aziz at 5/6

I'll want to trial Danish as a late order hitter in t20s, he has the ability to win matches out of nowhere and we must at least trial him. Malik will not fulfill the role of a later order hitter with a timid SR of 116.

Hmmm maybe he makes the squad for me just because we may need a middle order batsman standing by if Haider fails.

Sohaib Moqsood and Azam Khan might be those lower order or reliable upper order we could also use.

I think azam khan may have a better chance than maqsood plus he can keep if need to be

Yep, Azam could be that guy that goes bang in the closing overs if you are building a score or sometimes guys like him are best up the order. Nah, I'm happy enough with Rizwan as our WK i'd rather see Azam out on the field

I meant like can we drop sarfraz as the second keeper and get azam in as a batter who can keep if rizwan gets injuired also can play as a batter down the order

Ah ok, I got ya. One player for me that is being vastly underlooked is Rohail Nazir who impressed me a lot on the Shaheen's tour (both the 4-day game and t20 series).

So we have decided to Tour SA and send our best team out despite the apparent Covid Variant their and Australia refusing to travel to SA but the SA cricket board are releasing there best players to go join the IPL in the middle of the series, pretty shoddy if you ask me. Just read Notrje and Rabada leaving after the 2nd match. Not sure if Pakistan could have controlled this but the least they can do is make sure there best players are playing for country ahead of the World Cup rather than IPL

Dhanawis performances were good....why did Aziz not play in Pakistan's plan premier t20 tournament but was picked over someone who did and performed well?

Sorry bro didn't quite understand your last sentence i've highlighted in bold.

Who knows why Aziz wasn't picked but i reckon to mold someone right now and make them settle into their role, now is the time to play them so they capture experience.

InshAllah if given the opportunity i reckon Aziz can strike gold.

Pakistan in my view is nearly there in getting their team together they need someone else to support Shaheen, Haider needs to fire up the order and then a lower order hitter. If Pakistan ticks off these 3 things they will be a big threat come the t20 cup.

Yes hes a good player but i think he should continue playing for the shaheens and the A i dont think it will benefit him being with the mens team but i expect him next year to make the team but not right now.
