KARACHI: A Saudi prince has poached over 2,100 internationally protected houbara bustards in 21-day hunting safari in Chagai, Balochistan, during which the royal also indulged in illegal hunting in protected areas, says a report.

The report titled ‘Visit of Prince Fahd bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud regarding hunting of houbara bustard’ prepared by Jaffar Baloch, divisional forest officer of the Balochistan forest and wildlife department, Chagai at Dalbandin, says the prince hunted for 21 days – from Jan 11, 2014 to Jan 31– and hunted 1,977 birds, while other members of his party hunted an additional 123 birds, bringing the total bustard toll to 2,100, sources said. They said that hunting of the internationally protected bird was banned in Pakistan also, but the federal government issued special permits to Gulf states’ royals. Permits, which are person specific and could not be used by anyone else, allow the holders to hunt up to100 houbara bustards in 10 days in the area allocated, excluding reserved and protected areas.

The report dated Feb 4, 2014 (No: 216-219 HB/CHI) says that during the 21-day safari the prince hunted the birds for 15 days in the reserved and protected areas, poached birds in other areas for six days and took rest for two days. Giving a breakup of date-wise as well as area-wise details of the prince’s expedition, the report says that he hunted 112 houbara bustards in the Gut game sanctuary (Arbe pat) which is a reserved and protected area on Jan 11, 2014. The next two days on Jan 12 and 13th he hunted 116 and 93 birds in the Gut game sanctuary (Sai Rek) which is also a reserved and protected area. Then for the next two days Prince Fahd, who is also governor of Tabuk, visited Sato Gut and hunted 82 and 80 houbaras on Jan 14 and 15, respectively. On Jan 16, he visited Gut-i-Barooth and hunted 79 houbaras. Both these areas are not protected areas, says the report.

For the next six days the Saudi royal camped in the Koh-i-Sultan state forest, which is a reserved and protected area, and hunted 93, 82, 94, 97, 96 and 120 houbara bustards on Jan 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22, respectively. On Jan 23 and 24, he continued his hunting spree in the Gut game sanctuary (Dam), which is a reserved as well as protected area, and hunted 116 and 197 houbara bustards, respectively. The prince carried out hunting of the protected bird in Thalo Station and hunted 89 houbara bustards on Jan 25 and spent the next two days hunting the birds in Pul Choto, killing 34 and 89 birds on Jan 26 and 27, respectively. Both of these areas are neither reserved nor protected, says the report.

The remaining four days, Prince Fahd spent in the Gut game sanctuary, a reserved as well as protected area, and hunted 92, 94, 119 and 97 birds on Jan 28, 29, 30, and 31, respectively. The royal guest took rest on Feb 1 and 2 at the Bar Tagzai base camp after bringing the grand total of his trophies to 1,977. The report says: “123 birds were hunted by local representatives and other labourers of the hunting party. The total bustards hunted by Prince Fahd bin Abdul Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud are 1,977 and total bustards hunted by local representatives and other labourers are 123 bringing the grand total to 2100”.

Pakistan bending over backwards to accomodate Arabs while they are treating Pakistan as their personal playground. Absolutely disgusted.

hey they're saudi royalty! laws don't apply to them!

let's all try to be more like them so we can be worthy of washing their dishes!

Eeew Khaleejis

As usual Pakistan bends backwards for some cash and wants to impress their "ancestral" brothers from the Gulf

Absolutely shameful stuff but what to expect from a client state. Won't be surprised if during the next 4 years of Nawaz rule the Hobara population of Pakistan becomes totally extinct.

India has so many negatives, but they do not allow foreigners, even from friendly states to come over and treat the country like a brothel

I have a close friend from Rahim Yar Khan and some of the things he told me about what such "princes" do during their visits is beyond imagination

Can you elaborate in a way that your post won't be deleted?

Smuggling of kids for child jockeys(mostly from for rahim yar Khan;southern Punjab area) in camel race is one of the most highlighted one, Ansar Burney one of the most prominent human right activist in Pakistan has done lot of good work to highlight and prevent the issue.

I can understand you being insecure that you need to hunt animals to make you feel manly, but 2100 of an endangered species??

What Eagle Eye said, with some having a passion for a new meal every night; the attitude was entirely devoid of any remorse or guilt as they felt the touts and girl's family were paid handsomely.

google up why the Houbara bird's meat is eaten......

And some people still look upto the Saudi royal family as the guardians of Islam. People that cannot show compassion to their fellow creatures and kill for fun can never be the guardians of Islam.

Astaghfirullah who looks up to them that way??

The number is very very slim who truly believe that.

In a poor country, unfortunately money will always get what you want.

Heartless people, I pray and hope that hunters go childless and no not produce offspring.

Yeah I know that. Inhuman to the core. Those kids are treated like slaves. No they ARE slaves.

Gotcha.

Googled it. Man, those are moronic and heartless guys.

Don't count on it, that royal family is massive and can occupy an entire city in itself. Each summer they make it to the UK with their fleet of limousines and bundles of alcohol in tow and usually leave the place in a sorry mess two months afterward.

So my hate for them is all justified and they add new things to the list everyday.

I wonder how many are left in the wild now.

Morons... Why do all these people think they're above the law?

Well clearly they are above the law. Why that is, is the question that needs answering. This took place in Balochistan, maybe those questions need to be put to the federal govt of that region.

They must taste good, I have a thing for rare and exotic birds. :ajmal

'Whoever shoots at a living creature for sport is cursed.'

This vile prince ought to heed the words of his Prophet (PBUH).

Ye tou hogya.

These people will never be held accountable for ANYTHING here.

Absolutely disgusting The people in authority that allow this should hold their head in shame

What kind of people kill so many protected birds for fun?

There is not an animal that lives on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but forms part of communities like you
(6:38)

These royal retards aren't a threat to one "ummah'" alone, the "horn of Satan" hadith always gets new perspectives by the day.

I bet, he feels real good and happy with himself.

Congratulations your royal highness and the govt. that allowed him to do this in Pak!

Funny enuff James, I was thinking how Prophet Mohammed wouldve greeted this Saudi in the after life once his life is over............. Not looking good...........

I could not survive without regularly eating non veg cuisine so perhaps it's a little hypocritical of me to say this but I find people who kill animals and then NOT eat them absolute scumbags.

Trophy hunters are vile creatures in my book. Killing for food or even pest control is one thing but what these guys do is sick and twisted.

Which party is governing Balochistan right now? let's start naming names.

PML( N ), National Party and ISI mainly.

Perhaps you did not read carefully.

They said that hunting of the internationally protected bird was banned in Pakistan also, but the federal government issued special permits to Gulf states’ royals

I couldn't agree more, but what is more sickening than the trophy hunters is the govt that waives it's own laws in order to accommodate the Saudi royals. But then if the population don't care there's not much anyone else can do. If that happened in the UK there would have been people on the streets protesting.

It's probably better for the local mullah or local blackwater agent to kill birds instead of each other
It's still sad that they can use pakistan as their background to do so too

Apparently these bustards have 'aphrodisiac' properties

For some reason save the bustards doesnt have the same ring to as save the whales

I have watched the movie 'The Big Year' in last two days; indeed, this movie on birds is truly astonishing. The birds are truly majestic creatures. It is no surprising everywhere Saudi goes, the problems go with it.

If there are 2100 of them in Pakistan alone then they are not endangered species.

If there are 2100 of them in Pakistan alone then they are not endangered species.

2100 isn't a 'BIG' collective number for a species, especially not if the 'Sheikhs' have a hard-on for them!!! Also if its a native bird it means they must be among the last few left in the whole world!!

But more than wiping out a species, hunting a helpless animal for sport or their their twisted dietary addictions..........its simply the attitude of the Saud clan towards Pakistan!!

In Saudi Arabia they are taking big care of the minimal wildlife they have, with the NCWCD managing nearly 100k sq kilometres of protected area!! Somehow when they financially help another country they can come over and act as they please.

Tbh.....sauds aren't really the ones to blame.........they do what they are allowed to do!!!

Very sad if true... Can't help but pity the slave mentality of the Baloch govt

My signature says it all, but to put it into perspective, I feel that when people have power & money at their disposal, they tend to believe that there shall be no consequences of their actions. But they can't be more wrong.

The Oil wells won't last forever.

if these SOB are that much interested in aphrodisiac properties then they eat should animals like dog, bulls organ' ::))

Saudis have a free reign in Pakistan as long as their slave is PM. Disgraceful the whole lot of them. That goes for our PM as well

Disgusting. The fact that Saudis actually think we are far inferior also runs salt in the wounds when we treat them like gods....

We should herd all these guys into a park and hunt them and see how they like it.....

Absolute idiots

If only Khaleejis were that easy to get rid of, World would definitely be a better place without these gomy desert dwellers who were lucky they found oil

Somebody have to get US government to stop supporting saudi family, their countrymen will do the rest. I bet there will be much more peace in middle east after saudis are gone.

The officer seems to be a shia balochi so there mite be some bias and twists in the report. Anyhow, this should be thoroughly investigated and if such a figure is being claimed turns out to be false then this officer should be investigated for his basis to malign someone else.

Well there was a CIA contractor called Raymond Davis who murdered 2 Pakistanis, his CIA fellows coming to rescue him in their car crushed another Pakistani citizen, and was flown off on a chartered plane with money arranged by the Sharif bros. which was given to the families of those people.

Bahrain royals hunting houbaras in Sindh

Two members of the Bahrain royal family have been hunting the internationally protected houbara bustard in Sindh for the past several weeks, it emerged on Saturday.

According to sources, another royal family member of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, has arrived in the country, but has not yet ventured into the wild for houbara bustard hunting.

The sources said that the federal government in total disregard of its nature conservation related international commitments issued a large number of special permits to royal family members of Gulf states to hunt the houbara bustard and last year it issued at least 33 hunting permits for the hunting season.

Pay and kill in Pakistan, or kill and pay. Choose your options. Americans avail both the options if you know what i mean

There are relatively few cultural links between the Indian sub-continent and the Arab peninsula.

If Pakistan find themselves in a situation where Arabia's finest are in close cahoots with them with the nature of the relationship being only of one kind as these incidents indicate, it's yet another faulty decision and result of their own doing.

well I am strictly against such incidents and dislike the particular community to core but Sindh and Balochistan do have historical cultural ties with Gulf arab region(read about AL Balooshi and prestige associated with it), whole South Asia is not tamil nadu, neither all South Asians look like your stereotypical

Whatever, don't let other countries treat yours as a missile range or a hunting ground. That is all.

i don't think they are killing for sport, but for the meat..this bird is said to be a great aphrodisiac. so your quote is not applicable.

I am afraid the real culprits here are the Pakistanis for allowing this to happen on their soil.

I suppose it's better than all the Uighur Muslims, Pakistan have agreed to continue to help to torture, maim and kill with their Chinese gurus

Disgusting but as someone has already said if human life is worthless in Pakistan at times then what hope do the animals have ?

The people in charge just dont give two hoots.

This culture of hunting and consuming rare exotic birds is not limited to Saudi Sheikhs. In his book "Medium Raw" Chef and TV travel show personality Anthony Bourdain describes in great detail how he got invited to a secret dining experience reserved for the extremely privileged, to eat Ortalon Bunting. Its hunting is banned in France yet around 50,000 Ortalons are killed each year.

The consumption of Ortalon is also the stuff of legends. French diners eat Ortalons by covering their heads and face with a large napkin and swallowing the whole burning hot bird in order to absorb the maximum odour with the flavor.

Apparently, it was late French PM Francois Mitterand's last meal.

Strange! NATO and the USA are hunting down the Arab's and the best they can do is take their anger out on innocent animals.

"You can judge the morality of a nation by the way the society treats its animals"

I'm no eco warrior but this kind of stuff ****** me off. What is the need for this??

Not just this but look at elephants being murdered so some fool can crush the tusk into some "magic" remedy, or how dogs are barbarically killed in some Asian countries, or how we always hear stories of some poor animal being beaten and tortured.

So stupid and such a waste. Cant comprehend how some thick headed morons can be so cruel towards defenceless animals

Interesting quote? Who said that?
What do you find offending? That animals are killed? or that they are tortured?
Would you still mind if dogs are killed in slaughter houses like cows and sheep? Because I heard slaughter houses kill the animals in a humane way.
