What's new

Pakistan have a mediocre Test record for two decades now!

Still most of the people here think Pakistan is a good test team just because they were having fun beating teams in UAE which they can't even do anymore. :))

Despite losing all those away tests India’s record stands tall. What a freakish run they have had at home!

Is India the most dangerous home team?

They are lucky not to have played Pakistan much at home though

They have done very well in Asia and WI, not just at home.

So what changed ? In summary , the tests won by Pakistan in 80s and 90s were down primarily to three all-time great fast bowlers in their prime at test cricket , in Imran, Wasim and Waqar who were genuine match winners. These guys could bowl inspired spells ripping apart a batting line up single handedly in all conditions as confirmed by the number of 5fers and 10 fers they took in tests between them.

It created an illusion that Pakistan was a great team, but reality is the batting was always spineless, fielding and running embarrassing, and teams were known more for inconsistency, unpredictability and indiscipline , chaos rather than professionalism.

But take out those match winning bowlers, and what’s left behind is not a lot. Now you have bowlers who are average to good , but the rest has gone from already bad to much worse.

we've always been an average team that surprises folks once in a while.

I wouldn't call it bad ,w/l of near 1 is still satisfactory it just others have improved a lot specially India, South Africa and England. As Majid khan put it rightly Wasim Waqar and Imran hid many deficiencies of Pak cricket. Bowling hearts out on lifeless pitches with many catches being dropped .so that dud batsmen could score some runs.Reality is that there isnt much in Pakistan cricket outside of Wasim, Waqar and Imran.

Pakistan has always been a mediocre batting nation, and if your batting is not good enough, you will not be able to sustain a winning record. We were simply lucky to produce 4-5 elite bowlers in quick succession which kept us afloat in the 70s and 80s.

We are minnows now because our bowling is rubbish as well.

minnows only in test cricket, decent in ODIs and a beast in T20s

losing 0-5 to new zealand and being 32-8 at one stage is not decent...

defeating afghanistan in the last over and losing to bangladesh convincingly at home is not decent.

being thrashed by india, not once but twice is not decent.

The T20 drama will be over soon. We are number one because we haven't played India since 2016 and have only played one match against England. A T20 series vs India today would be as humiliating as the Asia Cup.

I can bet my bottom dollar that if there is a WT20 today anywhere in the world, we will not make it to the final let alone win the trophy. We are mediocre in all three formats and are rapidly heading towards minnow status, a status that has already been achieved in Test cricket.

You are the most pessimistic person I have seen in my life. Can't imagine someone whose team is doing so well in a particular format will talk of the team in such way.

Bro we are ranked number 5 for a reason, and that reason is, we are not as bad as our recent results suggest. Just a reminder, if anyone would have said that Pakistan will win the champions trophy before the touranment began than he would have been laughed off as a crazy person. Unpredictable tag for a reason.

T20I is not a real format, especially for bilaterals.

Does anyone outside of Pak, WI and Afg take T20I bilaterals seriously? Even WI has a lot of top players missing.

since 2006 in the uae, we have only won series' against Sri Lanka and West Indies.

We've lost to all the top teams at the place where we've been playing for the last decade.

they played good cricket, yes i give them that... but look at what's happened after that victory.

how long are you going to cherish that champions trophy victory?

How is he wrong? I was his biggest criticizer but realised he is only one who accepts and understands reality and the soon we accept it will be beneficial for us.One team is about to win a series in Australia other team is just pathetic. You have to be delusional to believe we are really No 1 in T20

2000s Pakistan was quite decent despite a very weak bowling attack and strong competition, frankly wasn't expecting that.

90s Pakistan underachieved like crazy, with their talent and Imran's legacy, they should have fought the Aussies on equal footing. Even we played Pak closer compared to 80s when the difference in strength between our sides wasn't huge.

2010s was salvaged courtesy Misbah's leadership, otherwise the record would have been minnow-level. Interesting thread OP.

asif was running wild in the mid 2000s and akhtar was as well but too bad he was injured.

sami was supposed to be the new leader but he went a different route.

i wouldn't say it was a "very weak bowling attack"

I didn't mean disrespect, I was talking in terms of usual Pakistani standards which are high, you guys have predominantly been a bowling nation.

Asif was a genius but didn't play much IIRC. Shoaib was an underachiever who broke down way too frequently, he did have his moments but he was a better ODI bowler IMO. And inheriting the WW legacy, there were lofty expectations. Pakistan also had many other mediocre quicks apart from Sami. The spin stocks were dry, Kaneria was good but Akmal ruined his career.

In 90s you had the most well rounded bowling attack, in the 2010s you have produced some exceptional spinners and decent quicks. 2000s stands out like a sore thumb.

Nonsense. Pakistan was number Test team just a few years ago. Humiliated Kohli's India in the CT final and is the number 1 T20 team.

Pakistan is going through a rough patch par Pakistan may talent bohot hai. Mark my words, Pakistan will light the fire under opposition in WC2019.

And our fans have the nerve to call other teams weak. What do you call these stats? We are a poor test team.

Can someone filter out test results of Pakistan's winning ratio where Inzamam had a role, as captain and chief selector?

I'm not 100% sure but you'll find under 100 run collapses there with same players being persisted with for years.

And most importantly they are the best travelling team who drew with England away where some home track bullies were thrashed by 1-4

Yeah. The best travelling team who lost a test match in Zimbabwe and drew the series. :ashwin

Yet to win a test series in England and draw a test (forget winning) in Australia since the mid 90s. :vk2

Losing multiple tests to a minnow level West Indies in uae. Clean swept by an all time low sri lanka and losing a series to New Zealand in uae. Can't even be called home track bullies. :msd

12th home test/adopted home test series defeat since 1995

Pakistan’s continuous diminishing quality of Test cricket at home ground/adopted home is getting worse every decade. 12 Test series loss in just 27 years in comparison to only 4 Test series loss at home from 1952-1995. (52-95) era also produced 1 ODI world cup and 3 Semi Final appearences.
In comparison to just 2 semi final appearences post 1995 era in ODI cricket.

It all started with Ramiz Raja in 1995

1) Lost to sri lanka at home 1995
2) Lost to South Africa at home 1997
3) Lost to Australia at home 1998
4) Lost to Zimbabwe at home 1998
5) Lost to Sri lanka at home 2000
6) Lost to England at home 2000
7) Lost to Australia at adopted home 2002
8) Lost to India at home 2004
9) Lost to South africa at home 2007
10) lost to Sri lanka at adopted home 2017
11) lost to New zealand at adopted home 2018
12) Lost to Australia at home 2022

This is nothing but embarassing.

Look at India during 1995-2022 era

1) Lost to South africa at home 2000
2) Lost to Australia at home 2004
3) Lost to England at home 2012

Pakistan's horrendous record at home in Pakistan in the last 30 plus years

Most teams boast about their home conditions and the fact they have home advantage playing in front of their home crowds. Let's have a look at Pakistan's home record since 1995

- Lost 2-1 to Sri Lanka in 1995
- Drew 1-1 against NZ in 1996
- Lost 1-0 against SA in 1997
- Lost 1-0 against Aus in 1998
- Lost 2-1 against Sri Lanka in 1999
- Lost 1-0 against England in 2000
- Lost 2-1 against India in 2004
- Drew 1-1 against Sri Lanka in 2004
- Lost 1-0 against SA in 2007

And now

- Lost 1-0 against Aus in 2022

I can't think of many sides with such an atrocious record at home.

Do the Pakistani team management ie the captain and coaches fall under immense pressure because they are playing at home due to which they resort to ultra defensive tactics, pitches?

Playing in the UAE was a boon for Pakistani players as let's be real, even if it was our designated home ground at the time, everyone knew it really wasn't our home.

You cannot command respect if you don't have a dominant record at home. Maybe it's a serious time for the PCB, Coach, Captain and the players to sit down and decide what kind of pitches do they want and need to play on to win consistently at home.

Wow, that post was quite a revelation. I had no idea Pakistan had lost so many series at home since 1995. Is there any other top 8 team with a similar home record or is it just Pakistan? I am a little bit shocked actually.
