Pakistan needs a new military operation to root out terrorism

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry on Monday said that unfortunately, serious issues were also being politicised in Pakistan, presenting Azm-e-Istehkam as an example.

"Azm-e-Istehkam is a comprehensive and integrated counter-terrorism campaign, not a military operation per se as it is being presented," the DG ISPR said during a press conference in Rawalpindi.

‘Illegal political mafia’ sabotaging comprehensive counter-terrorism operation: DG ISPR

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif on Monday said that a “massive, illegal political mafia” in the country was trying to sabotage the state’s Azm-i-Istehkam (Resolve for Stability) operation to fulfil its vested interests.

Addressing a press conference in Rawalpindi, the military’s spokesperson said that the purpose of his presser was to “clarify the army’s stance on some important topics”, amid the recent rise of “organised propaganda” against the armed forces based on “false and concocted news”.

Responding to a question regarding the potential of displacement in key areas as a result of the said operation, Lt Gen Sharif said that “very important issues were being sacrificed on the altar of politics”, adding that Azm-i-Istehkam was one such example.

He stressed that it was a “comprehensive counter-terrorism campaign” launched through national consensus and was “not just a military operation as it was being portrayed”.

Last month, the federal government approved the operation to counter a sharp rise in terrorist attacks across the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

“A narrative is being built that the operation would displace people […] but the purpose of the operation was only to reinvigorate the already in-place National Action Plan (NAP),” the DG ISPR said, adding that the document of the operation clearly mentioned that.

“A massive illegal, political mafia rose to sabotage the operation and the first move of that mafia was to make the operation controversial through false and fake arguments.”

Without naming who he was referring to, Lt Gen Sharif added that a “very strong lobby” had a “vested interest” because of which it didn’t want the NAP to succeed, adding that the entity in question was “receiving a lot of money” to subvert the operation.

“The stakes in [sabotaging] this operation are very high, and it’s not based on any ideology but involves a lot of money,” he said.

He said if Operation Azm-i-Istehkam was properly implemented, it would not only eliminate terrorism but also lead to societal and national uplift.

Questioned about an alleged audio leak of TTP chief Mufti Noor Wali Mehsud, the DG ISPR questioned what brand of Islam the militant was preaching that involved blowing up schools, colleges, hospitals, and homes.

“[Such narratives and actions] will be taken to their logical end,” he said, adding that they “only strengthened our resolve that Azm-i-Istehkam was necessary” for the country’s stability and security.

Earlier this month, the military’s top brass had expressed concern at what it said was “unwarranted criticism by some quarters and deliberate misrepresentation” of Azm-i-Istehkam.

The ISPR had said the senior army huddle “noted with concern the unwarranted criticism by some quarters and deliberate misrepresentation of the vision, only for furthering their vested interests”.

Army followed SOPs to control ‘chaotic crowd’ in Bannu rally

Questioned about last week’s violence during a peace rally in Bannu and the alleged firing by security forces, Lt Gen Sharif clarified that locals of the district had demanded carrying out a peace march — a day after an attack on the city’s cantonment led to the martyrdom of eight soldiers — and the protesters had agreed that there would be no anti-state slogans chanted during the rally.

“But when the peace march commenced, some negative elements also joined in, and just when protesters were marching through the point where the attack had taken place, some of them started chanting slogans against the army and the state while resorting to pelting stones.”

The DG ISPR played a clip from the march during the presser, showing armed protesters attacking what it said was the wall of the Bannu cantonment. “Some armed protesters resorted to gunfire as a result of which there were injuries”, he said.

Lt Gen Sharif said a temporary wall was also torn down by the protesters and the supply depot was looted.

They've started practicing for the operation by opening fire at civilians, legends!

No they fired on violent bannu protestors the aider and abbettors of terrorists

Ethno fascists and millions of Afghans living in pakistan.

These people hosted the bannu cantonment attackers.

Military needs full operation in kpk and balochistan and I agree with ethnofacsists people should not be displaced like last time where they were shifted to punjab and sind and main cities to cause carnage, they need to be sitting directly with their terrorist kin whom are creating a state within a state and meet the same bullets artillery shell and salvos of rockets and bombs when they breeding rabbits are killed as well who churn out 10 kids + then they will sue for peace .

If saddam hussain and president asad were ruling pakistan they would have ended this pashtun ethofascism and taliban ashnas a long time ago in brutal fashion.

These people have no problems abducting punjabis and chopping of their heads and killing punjabi barbers cooks etc yet millions of the swamp rest of pakistan and take punjabi wheat and rice and smuggle lodes to afghanistan.
If it wasn't for punjab these people wouldn't even have bread and kabuli pilau they would be eating pebbles.

And it has nothing to do with military occupation

Do you see punjabis and sindhis attacking the state or blowing things up.

You do not resolve dissent by using force, the longer it festers the worse the blowback. Saddam is dead and Assad sits on a broken throne where his country has become a permanent battleground for the worlds powers, these aren't exceptional examples. The first thing to do is to empower the popular elected leadership and use them to do the bidding. The establishment is not capable or intelligent enough to negotiate and achieve peace, the default setting is using force which is exactly what the perpetrators want. Everything they have done so far has worsened the situation. This needs patient political resolution.

Look at the demands of the bannu jirga and what they asked from the kpk government and gandapur.

And then tell me if any country will allow those conditions placed on it .

Force is the only way to deal with this lar aw bar fascism of the durrand line.

Turkey and azerbaijan have shown the correct way to deal with those that murder their populations turkey went into kurdish regions and occupied northern Syria.

Azerbaijan finished off armenia and reclaimed it's lost territories that had been ethnically cleansed.

Problem is cautious acts around these lar aw bar who use cover of the civilian population if these civilians won't turn these people in and actually in most cases are the relatives of terrorists and terrorist sympathisers
Your fair game.
If you do wrong actions then get ready for consequences.

They don't fight one on one they fight using cowardly hit and run using civilian cover

This was done by elected governments and not the army, it had public backing! These populations weren't suffering from the economic mess the country is in currently, unaffordable food prices, scant power supply, mass unemployment, increasing poverty, The establishment and it's current political cronies do not have public support, period. Plus the big complication of Taliban as the neighbour. Stirring up a conflict now is the worst thing possible, the exchequer is broke and then fund a war against your own people? Alienating KPK further will only mean they continue to lose ground intelligence, struggle to find the hiding terrorists, lose more men and finally the worst outcome possible, turn this into a widely publicised freedom movement. It's heading in that direction.

Crackdown against armed groups launched in Bannu

Police in Bannu have commenced a major crackdown on armed groups in the area, conducting raids and making multiple arrests.

Following directives from the Chief Minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur and demands from the Bannu Peace Committee, the police launched the operation across the city.

Initial reports indicate that over a dozen armed individuals have been arrested, with authorities seizing weapons and a non-custom paid vehicle.

The operation, spearheaded by the District Police, aims to dismantle the strongholds of these armed groups.

As police actions intensified, the local populace took to the streets, chanting in support of the law enforcement efforts.

The crackdown marks a significant move towards restoring peace and order in Bannu, with continued raids expected in the coming days.

‘TTP militant’ accused of KPO, Abbas Town attacks shot dead in Karachi

A suspected militant, said to be associated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), was shot dead in an ‘intelligence-based operation (IBO)’ in the Moachko area on Wednesday, police said.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) said that the alleged militant had been declared an absconder by an anti-terrorism court in the case of the 2023 brazen attack on Karachi Police Office (KPO) and he was also the main accused in the March 2013 Abbas Town bomb blast that claimed the lives of 47 persons.

“The CTD carried out an IBO on Northern Bypass and killed TTP militant Umer Farooq, alias Doctor, in an encounter,” said a CTD press release.

It added that a few days ago the Sindh home department had issued a threat alert in which it was stated that the suspect had been given a special task [by terrorists] for carrying out “terror activities in Karachi”. The alert also stated that the suspect was “reviving his network” in the metropolis.

The CTD and an intelligence agency launched a manhunt for the suspect through their ‘informers’.

On Wednesday night, acting on a tip-off, the CTD team carried out a raid near Hanfia Masjid on Northern Bypass where the suspect was waiting for someone. On seeing the police, he resorted to firing to avoid his arrest, the police said, adding that the law enforcers returned fire and arrested the suspect in wounded condition. However, he died on way to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi.

The CTD claimed that a bullet fired by the suspect also hit a police officer but he s remained safe because he was wearing a bulletproof jacket.

A 9mm pistol was recovered from his possession. “The killed terrorist was declared an absconder by the ATC in the KPO attack case,” the CTD statement added.

In February 2023, three policemen and a civilian were killed while 18 law enforcers wounded when three TTP militants wearing suicide jackets stormed the KPO in February 2023. One militant blew himself up while two others were shot dead in hours-long joint operation by police, Rangers and the army.

The CTD statement said that the slain suspect Umer Farooq was also the ‘main accused’ in the 2013 Abbas Town bomb blast case in which 47 people were killed and 135 others injured.

The suspect had been arrested by the CTD in the past, but acquitted. “The killed suspect was arrested in 10 cases of murder, attempted murder and terrorism but he was acquitted,” said the CTD statement.

The CTD said that after being exonerated from all charges and released from prison, the suspect had gone to Afghanistan.

Cop shot at, wounded in ‘targeted attack’

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was shot at and wounded in a suspected targeted attack near Tibet Centre on Wednesday, police said.

They added that ASI Muhammad Naseer, 45, was shot in the leg by unidentified gunmen within the remit of the Preedy police station. He was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza said that the ASI was posted in Security-1 and was deputed with a judge as his security guard.

He was coming from the City Courts on his motorcycle when four armed men riding two motorcycles, who were apparently chasing him, opened fire on him, snatched his official pistol and fled.

The officer suffered a bullet wound in the leg.

The DIG said that this was the second such incident in district South, as earlier on July 12, Head Constable Khalid Ali Khan, 40, was shot by armed men at the Defence Library signal. He was also posted in ‘Security’ and a guard of a senior bureaucrat. The attackers also took away his official rifle.

The DIG apprehended that an organised group was apparently targeting policemen. “We cannot be certain about involvement of militants of banned outfits, but it seems the policemen are being targeted in the metropolis,” he said.

Apex committee rules out operation in KP, resolves to eliminate terrorism

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Apex Committee has reiterated its resolve to eliminate terrorism, however, stressing that no military operation is being launched against terrorists in the province.

The province's top security body met Thursday after representatives of the Bannu Aman Jirga put forward their demands to eliminate terrorism and establish peace in the province.

The provincial government's resolve against terrorism came in a joint communique issued earlier today after Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur chaired the apex committee's meeting attended by top civil, police and military officials.

Five representatives of the jirga also attended the meeting.

In today's meeting, the civil-military body discussed the issues related to terrorism and the Bannu incident wherein at least four people were killed and several others sustained injuries after a protest staged on traders' call against the deteriorating law and order situation escalated and turned unpleasant.

Subsequently, in a meeting with KP CM Gandapur earlier this week, the jirga representatives had sought to dismantle armed groups operating in the province; empower police and ensure their patrolling at night; allow CTD to conduct search operations or take action against terrorists instead of security forces; and present missing persons before courts.

In the communique issued following the huddle, the apex committee stated that terrorism in all its forms is "condemnable" and the provincial administration will launch a crackdown on them, as the chief minister has directed police to arrest any armed man who does not represent the government and take action against him.

Referring to the controversy surrounding the Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, the apex committee stated that military institutions have already issued clarification regarding the new counter-terrorism drive.

"Azm-e-Istehkam is a comprehensive and integrated counter-terrorism campaign, not a military operation per se as it is being presented," DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahemd Sharif Chaudhry stated during a press conference in Rawalpindi earlier this week.

"Police will act against the offices of the militants without any discrimination," the communique said, adding that the action against the terror elements will be carried out by law-enforcement agencies including police and the counter-terrorism department of police.

The judiciary will be moved for a judicial inquiry into the Bannu incident, it said and added that assistance will be sought from the Pakistan Army for action in those areas not accessible for police action.

The statement said CTD will take action against the "suspected seminaries and areas" in line with the jirga's demands and police have been directed to ensure patrolling round the clock.

Moreover, the joint statement also called upon residents to avoid indulging in lawlessness and violent protests, stressing that the armed forces, police and the people have rendered "unforgettable" sacrifices for the elimination of terrorism. Hence, the people should abide by the law and code of conduct by refraining from any "propaganda" that may harm the sentiments of martyrs' families.

The declaration stressed that some elements targeted the state institutions in the wake of the Bannu incident, saying the unjustifiable criticism offended the ranks and files of the forces.

"This behaviour is impermissible," read the statement.

Terrorist killed, two others injured in Hoshab operation: ISPR

At least one terrorist was killed and two others were injured and their hideout was destroyed in a successful intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted by the security forces in Balochistan's Hoshab District last night, the military said on Thursday.

During the operation, an intense exchange of fire occurred between the troops and the terrorists, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

As a result, terrorist Ali Jan was killed, while two other terrorists sustained injuries, it added.

The forces recovered weapons, ammunition, and explosives from the deceased terrorist, who had been actively involved in various terrorist activities in the area, including the kidnapping and target killing of innocent civilians, according to military's media wing.

A sanitisation operation is currently underway to eliminate any remaining terrorist present in the area.

The security forces in coordination with the nation, remain committed to thwarting any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of Balochistan, said the ISPR.

Last week, the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested a close associate of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks in the United States, in an IBO.

The CTD spokesperson identified the arrested all-Qaeda terrorist as Aminul Haq, whose name appeared in the United Nations’ updated list of designated terrorists. The spokesperson said that a case of Haq’s arrest had been registered and further investigations were under way.

Earlier this month, on July 10, a joint intelligence-based operation (IBO) led by security forces and police targeted a high-profile terrorist in Hassan Khel, Peshawar District.

According to the ISPR, the operation, prompted by intelligence reports, culminated in a fierce firefight, resulting in the neutralisation of three terrorists, including the high-value target (HVT), terrorist commander Abdul Raheem.

Terrorist killed in North Waziristan IBO: ISPR

On Friday, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in North Waziristan District on the reported presence of terrorists, according to the military's media wing.

As per a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), after an intense fire exchange, terrorist Khawarji Razzaq was killed during the operation.

He was a close associate of Khawarji Gul Bahadur and was actively involved in numerous terrorist activities in the area, including the targeted killing of Malik Sher Muhammad, grandson of Faqir of Ippi on January 6, 2023, as well as the facilitation of a suicide bombing attack in North Waziristan on March 16, which resulted in the martyrdom of seven soldiers.

ISPR stated that a military operation is being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists found in the area as the armed forces remain determined to eradicate the menace of terrorism from the country.

CTD given custody of 24 suspected militants in Bannu

An anti-terrorism court remanded two dozen suspected militants on Saturday in the custody of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of police in Bannu for 25 days.

The suspects were held during a cleanup operation in Bannu following an agreement between Aman Jirga and the government.

An official said police had also seized arms and ammunition from the suspected militants, impounded their vehicles and eliminated their hideouts during the operation. He said the suspects were handed over to the CTD, where cases were registered against them under relevant sections of the law.

A day earlier Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur while addressing a public rally in Bannu had asked the police to go after armed groups across the province.

On Saturday, the CTD produced 24 suspects in the local anti-terrorism court and sought their physical remand for a month.

Sources said the suspects were identified as Niaz, Awaz Khan, Rehan, Rahman, Azizur Rehman, Armani, Hidayatullah, Masha Jan, Kiramatullah, Sheryar, Waseem, Ahmad Khaliq, Bakht Wali, Hamid Khan, Dashat Khan, Mulaqati Khan, Munir Shah, Mohammad Anwar Shah, Mohammad Ishaq, Abdul Hameed Shah, Wali Rehman, Junaid, Amjad and Asif.

After considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the court remanded the suspects in CTD custody for 25 days, subject to their pre- and post-medical examination, to complete investigation.

Police said the militants were charged under different sections including Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Five militants killed in separate operations across KP

At least five militants were gunned down by security forces in separate actions in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, whereas a police constable embraced martyrdom during an operation conducted by law enforcement agencies.

In a statement issued on Monday, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that security forces conducted a joint intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Mohmand district, in which three militants were killed.

The statement claimed that forces recovered a cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives during the operation. “However, during intense fire exchange, Constable Abrar Hussain, a resident of district Swabi, having fought gallantly, embraced martyrdom,” the ISPR said.

In a separate operation in Dera Ismail Khan, a militant named Sifatullah alias Mullah Mansoor was killed while three others were injured, the military said.

The statement noted that Sifatullah was a wanted man, involved in numerous militant activities in the area and is said to have facilitated the suicide bombing in Daraban on Dec 12, 2023.

According to the statement, security forces also engaged militants in North Waziristan, where one militant was killed.

“Pakistan’s security forces stand shoulder to shoulder with other law enforcement agencies to ensure peace and stability across Pakistan and such sacrifices of our brave men further strengthen our resolve,” the statement read.

On Saturday, the military’s media wing issued a statement which read that four militants were killed by security forces in a joint IBO carried out in Tank district. “After intense fire exchange, four terrorists were killed,” the statement had said.

Political leaders oppose new military offensive in KP

Political leaders on Tuesday unanimously opposed any new military operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and called for restoring lasting peace in the region.

They made the demand while speaking at a condolence reference held in Landi Kotal for the slain journalist, Khalil Jibran. It was organised under the aegis of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Union of Journalists in collaboration with the local press club.

The speakers emphasised the need for unity among the Pakhtuns to foil all attempts aimed at starting a new military operation on Pakhtuns’ soil as the so-called intelligence-based operations were already in progress in different parts of the province.

On the occasion, senior Jamaat-i-Islami leader Mushtaq Ahmad said that Khalil Jibran was martyred because he was speaking truth and was a peace lover. He said that he lost his life because there was no peace in the region.

“Why is the government talking of starting a new military operation when we have fenced the border with Afghanistan, which means no militant can sneak into this side of the border.” He questioned the rationale behind launching any new military offensive.

He said that the security establishment had so far conducted 21 military operations during the last 22 years but peace in the region could not be restored, which was a huge question mark on the ability of the successive governments in curbing militancy.

He said that his party was fully behind the tribal journalists in these trying times, and demanded adequate compensation for the family of Khalil Jibran.

Awami National Party’s provincial president Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that Pakhtuns could no more be deceived in the name of military operations for restoration of elusive peace. He said his party would vehemently resist displacement of Pakhtuns.

He called for a change in the policy of the government towards Pakhtuns, and insisted that such an attitude was creating a gulf between them and the central government.

He alleged that the military operations were aimed at causing Pakhtuns’ displacement and occupying their natural resources.

The gathering later passed three resolutions unanimously, demanding of the Khyber police to expedite the process of investigation into the Khalil Jibran’s murder case, approval of a special grant for the family of the martyred journalist and provision of foolproof security to all the press clubs in the merged districts.

Govt ramps up fight against militancy

Pakistan has banned Hafiz Gul Bahadur group and Majid Brigade, a suicide wing of the Baloch terrorist outfit, in a latest move to ramp up fight against the resurgence of militancy in the country.

There has been no formal announcement made about the listing of two deadly terrorist organisations.

However, the list of proscribed organisations maintained by the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) shows Hafiz Gul Bahadur group and Majid Brigade are now part of the banned outfits.

The list available on NACTA website indicates that Majid Brigade was banned on July 18 while Hafiz Gul Bahadur group was outlawed formally on July 25.

The move was inevitable as both outfits have stepped up terrorist attacks in recent months, threatening the country's security.

Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, which was once dubbed as "good Taliban" since it fought against the anti-Pakistan groups in the erstwhile tribal areas, turned against the state after Pakistan launched massive military operations in ex-FATA.

The group, which now operates from Afghanistan, has carried out some of the deadly attacks targeting security forces.

Once such terrorist attack took place in Bannu Cantonment earlier this month leaving eight Pakistani soldiers martyred before 10 terrorists were neutralised.

In March, Hafiz Gul Bahadur also claimed responsibility of targeting a security check post in Tank, leaving seven Pakistani soldiers including two officers martyred.

That attack prompted Pakistan to carry out first publicly declared cross border strikes inside Afghanistan.

Pakistan has been repeatedly demanding the extradition of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, the group's chief. The militant outift is not part of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) but shares the same ideology.

The Majid Brigade, meanwhile, has been carrying out attacks targeting the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is the suicide wing of Baloch terrorist organisations to undermine Chinese investments particularly in Balochistan.

The group has carried out numerous attacks targeting the Chinese nationals. The most notable attacks included assault on Pakistan stock exchange, Chinese Consulate in Karachi and Confucius Institute at the Karachi university.

Baloch terrorist outfits have never used suicide missions before the Majid Brigade.

A recent report submitted to the UN Security Council reveals a possible nexus between Majid Brigade and the banned TTP.

It is believed that the TTP might have trained suicide bombers of the Majid Brigade.

Baloch terrorist outfits and TTP share no ideology but their common interests to target Pakistani interests have, perhaps, brought them on the same page.

With the formal listing of Hafiz Gul Bahadur Group and Majid Brigade, assets of both these terrorist entities would be confiscated and there would be travel and other restrictions on their members.

After the latest listing of both organisations, the number of banned outfits, as per NACTA, now stands at 81.

CTD arrests two most wanted terrorists in Larkana

As per details, the CTD recovered 350 grams of explosive material, 6 detonators, Kalashnikov powder, wire, nut bolts, and a grenade from the terrorists’ possession.

According to the Counter-Terrorism Department, the arrested terrorists, Jamil Sheikh and Habibullah Jatoi, residents of Mehrabpur, were involved in the May 29 blast at the DSP office.

During interrogation, the terrorists revealed that they had received training in Kandahar, Afghanistan and they were planning to carry out a bomb blast at the Ladies Jail and the Larkana Stadium on August 14.

The CTD has registered a case against the terrorists under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Earlier, the Counter Terrorism Department claimed to have arrested two notorious terrorists after an encounter.

After receiving information about the presence of three terrorists, the CTD and police conducted an operation in the Ibrahim Shoro area of Hyderabad.

During the operation, the CTD officials experienced an encounter with the terrorists in the Kotri Site area of Hyderabad.

During the exchange of gunfire, two bullets struck the bulletproof jacket of the SHO CTD Asif Hayat, in response the CTD managed to arrest two terrorists in injured condition meanwhile, one terrorist managed to flee the scene.

Following the arrest the bomb disposal squad has been called on the scene to check the items recovered from the possession of the terrorists.

Young army officer embraces martyrdom after succumbing to gun-battle wounds: ISPR

A young Pakistan Army officer embraced martyrdom at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Peshawar, succumbing to wounds sustained in a fierce gunfight with Khawarij insurgents in Tirah Valley of Khyber District, the military’s media wing reported on Sunday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said 24-year-old Lieutenant Uzair Mehmood Malik, a resident of district Attock, was under intensive medical treatment at the CMH .

The ISPR said the fire exchange took place between security forces and "Khawarij" at three different locations in Tirah Valley.

“At one of the locations in Bagh, Lieutenant Uzair Mehmood Malik, leading his troops from the front, fought bravely and sent four Khawarij to hell. However, during intense fire exchange, the officer got critically injured,” it said.

“Security Forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country and such sacrifices of our brave officers and soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” it added.

The military’s media affairs wing said on August 9 that three Pakistan Army soldiers embraced martyrdom during shootouts with terrorists at three different locations in Tirah Valley.

According to the ISPR, the fire exchange had taken place at three different locations in Tirah Valley.

During the intense fire exchange, three brave soldiers — Havildar Inam Gul, 37, resident of District Mianwali; Sepoy Muhammad Imran, 29, resident of District Tank and Sepoy Iltaf Khan, 22, resident of District Mardan, — having fought gallantly embraced Shahadat, the ISPR had said.

Following the Taliban's rise to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has experienced a tidal wave of terrorist attacks on security forces, particularly in provinces bordering the neighbouring country, with militants employing advanced weaponry and equipment.

With a surge in counterterrorism operations by security forces, the frequency of violent incidents has decreased in recent months.

According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), Annual Security report, during the second quarter of the current year, Pakistan witnessed 380 violence-linked fatalities and 220 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws.

The report stated that these casualties resulted from as many as 240 incidents involving terror attacks and counter-terror operations.

Against this backdrop, the federal cabinet approved Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, a reinvigorated national counterterrorism campaign following the Central Apex Committee's recommendations under the National Action Plan to root out terrorism.

A key commander of the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), identified as Shambeen alias Shahak, was reportedly killed by one of his own comrades, sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident highlights growing internal discord within the BLF, a terrorist group allegedly funded by India.

According to sources, the assassination of Shambeen, who was a highly sought-after militant leader involved in multiple terrorist activities, underscores a deepening rift within the group.

The BLF, along with other India-funded terrorist organisations, is said to be embroiled in an escalating power struggle over funding and authority.

Shambeen alias Shahak was reportedly wanted by law enforcement agencies for his involvement in attacks on security forces and the targeted killings of former associates who had surrendered.

His direct involvement in numerous attacks on security forces in Balochistan had made him one of the most notorious figures within the BLF.

The internal conflicts within the BLF, as well as among other terrorist groups receiving external support, are believed to be intensifying, further destabilizing their operations.

On January 18, the Pakistan armed forces struck hideouts used by terrorist organisations, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and BLF, inside Iran in an intelligence-based operation, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The military's media wing elaborated that the "precision strikes" were carried out using armed drones, rockets, loitering munitions and stand-off weapons.

"Maximum care was taken to avoid collateral damage."

A day earlier, on January 17, Pakistan recalled its ambassador from Iran and expelled Tehran’s envoy in a swift move to the Iranian missile strikes as extensive consultations were underway to decide the next step.

Seven khwarij gunned down in Kurram IBO: ISPR

The security forces gunned down seven khawarij during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) conducted in Kurram district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

The military’s media wing in a statement said that the killed terrorists were actively involved in numerous attacks against security forces and innocent civilians.

It added that five khwarij have also been injured in the IBO.

“During the operation, our troops effectively engaged the khawarij’s location, resulting in seven terrorists of Fitna Al Khawarij being sent to hell, while five others were injured,” the ISPR said.

It read that the hideouts of khwarij were destructed and a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives have been recovered.

“A sanitisation operation is ongoing to eliminate any remaining terrorists in the area and Pakistan’s security forces remain determined to eradicate the threat of terrorism from the country,” the ISPR added.

Earlier, the ISPR said that four security personnel embraced martyrdom, in an exchange of fire with terrorists in South Waziristan district in the night between Monday and Tuesday.

The media wing of the military said that the troops engaged the terrorists effectively and gunned six terrorists.

“During intense fire exchange, four brave sons of soil having fought gallantly embraced Shahadat,” the ISPR statement said.

Havildar Nisar Hussain, 34; Naik Rashid Gul, 34; Naik Irfan Ullah Khan, 30; and 21-year-old Sepoy Usman Rafaqat are among the martyres.

Security forces kill three terrorists in KP's North Waziristan: ISPR

Security forces have killed three terrorists during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's (KP) area of Razmak, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday.

"On 16 August 2024, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in the general area of Razmak, District North Waziristan, on the reported presence of Khwarij,' the army's media wing said in a statement.

"During the conduct of the operation, intense fire exchange took place between the troops and khwarij, as a result of which, three Khwarij of Fitna al Khawarij were sent to hell, while one Kharji got injured."

Weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the terrorists, who were actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces as well as the targeted killings of innocent civilians, it added.

The statement further said that the process of sanitisation in the area is underway to eliminate any other terrorists found in the locale as security forces are determined to wipe out the menace of "khawarij" and terrorism from the country.

A day earlier, seven terrorists were killed and five others wounded in an IBO conducted in the KP district of Kurram.

In another action carried out last week by the security forces in South Waziristan, four soldiers embraced martyrdom while six terrorists were killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Pakistan has experienced a spike in terrorism since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Most terror incidents were reported in provinces bordering the neighbouring country — Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) report, during the second quarter of the current year, the country witnessed 380 violence-linked fatalities and 220 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws.

The report stated that these casualties resulted from 240 incidents involving terror attacks and counter-terrorism operations.

Against this backdrop, the federal cabinet in June this year approved Operation Azm-e-Istehkam, a reinvigorated national counter-terrorism campaign following the Central Apex Committee's recommendations under the National Action Plan to root out terrorism.

3 terrorists killed during intelligence-based operation in Mastung: ISPR

Three terrorists — including those involved in the martyrdom of Panjgur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zakir Ali — were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) by security forces in Mastung during the early hours on August 19, the military’s media wing said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said: “These terrorists were involved in numerous terrorist activities in the area and were also responsible for the shahadat of Deputy Commissioner of Panjgur, Mr Zakir Ali, on 12 August 2024.”

Apart from the three dead, three more terrorists were injured after a fierce exchange of fire took place during the operation, according to the ISPR.

“Today’s operation has avenged the heinous act and has brought the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

“Security forces of Pakistan in step with the nation, remain determined to thwart attempts at sabotaging peace, stability, and progress of Balochistan,” it added.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces for killing the terrorists, adding that the elements involved in terrorism should learn from the fate of the killers of DC Panjgur.

“The premier reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to wipe out the menace of terrorism and said that the war with terrorists will continue until their complete elimination, adding that the entire country stood alongside the armed forces in their fight,” Radio Pakistan reported.

Monday’s operation comes after the Balochistan Chief Minister stated in a press conference last Thursday that intelligence information and evidence indicate that Panjgur DC was martyred by the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also visited the province on Sunday where he remarked that the prosperity and development of Balochistan were linked to sustainable peace while visiting the Frontier Corps (South) Balochistan.

For decades, the province of Balochistan has been plagued by an insurgency led by separatist groups, some fighting for independence or a greater share of the region’s mineral resources, with security forces often the target of bombings.

Rs60 billion approved for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam

The government on Thursday approved Rs60 billion additional funds to carry out Operation Azm-e-Istehkam and would immediately release Rs20 billion, which the military has sought to equip security forces fighting against militants in two provinces.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet approved Rs20 billion as a special allocation for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam during the current fiscal year 2024-25, according to an official announcement by the Ministry of Finance. An official of the ministry said that the remaining nearly Rs40 billion will be disbursed during the second half of the fiscal year and will be utilised for procurement of advanced military gadgets.

Headed by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, the ECC also allowed the export of additional 100,000 metric tons of sugar, bringing the total export quantity to 250,000 on the watch of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The ECC also delinked the export from maintaining the local prices at Rs140 per kg, giving an unwarranted room to sugar millers to earn not only from the export proceeds but also from the local market by increasing the prices.

Operation Azm-e-Istehkam

The ECC was told that in light of the June 2024 decision of the Federal Apex Committee to launch the new military operation, the military has sought Rs60 billion in additional funds. The money is over and above the regular military budget and the government will issue an additional supplementary grant to the tune of Rs60 billion.

The government will immediately disburse the Rs20 billion while the remaining amount would be made available against the procurements.

Pakistan is passing through a difficult security phase and its forces are fighting with terrorists in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to flush out terrorism.

An official of the ECC said that the terrorists had access to better technology and weapons that were left behind by running US forces. In order to tackle this challenge, the military needed new hardware to fight the menace of terrorism. The government has immediately given Rs20 billion for capacity enhancement and the remaining Rs40 billion funds would be released as per the need.

Punjab Police successfully foiled an attack by militant insurgents in the Taunsa Sharif area of Dera Ghazi Khan, killing two terrorists, a spokesperson for Punjab Police said on Saturday

The development took place two days after a police van was attacked with rockets, resulting in the deaths of over 12 policemen and multiple injuries in Rahim Yar Khan.

In a fierce gun battle, the insurgents used hand grenades and other heavy weapons against the police. SHO of Vehova Police Station, Sadiq Baramani, and police constable Muzammil Nazir sustained injuries in the exchange of fire.

The spokesperson noted that four attempts by militants to attack checkpoints located on the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa border were also thwarted.

"In light of the threat of terrorism, checkpoints at the Punjab-Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa border were on high alert," the spokesperson said. The insurgents were believed to be planning attacks on police stations or other sensitive locations within Punjab.

Intelligence agencies had previously received information about the infiltration of terrorists into Punjab.

SHO Vehova and his team pursued the insurgents, who, upon seeing the police, attacked with hand grenades and heavy firearms. "Equipped with bulletproof vehicles, helmets, and jackets, the police officers responded immediately," the spokesperson added.

Backup teams from the police and Elite Force arrived on the scene promptly.

After a heated exchange, both militants were neutralised. The spokesperson mentioned that the bulletproof police vehicle sustained damage from grenades and gunfire.

Following the incident, RPO Dera Ghazi Khan, Captain (retd) Sajjad Hassan Khan, and DPO Syed Ali arrived at the scene. RPO DG Khan, accompanied by the DPO, visited Tehsil Hospital Taunsa to check on the injured officers.

Punjab Police chief Dr Usman Anwar praised the officers for their bravery in confronting and eliminating the terrorists.

"Police and all security agencies are on high alert, and terrorists will not be allowed to enter Punjab under any circumstances," Dr Anwar stated. "Punjab Police will spare no effort in protecting the lives and property of citizens."

A search and sweep operation by police and other law enforcement agencies is ongoing in the area, according to the Punjab Police spokesperson.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has resolved to end terrorism in Pakistan, promising to provide the military with all necessary resources to combat the threat

The premier declared, “There is no room for terrorism. The time has come to end it. We will provide the military with whatever resources it needs.”

PM Shahbaz condemned the ongoing violence in Balochistan, noting that the terrorism there cannot be condemned enough. He also highlighted attempts by terrorists to create discord between Pakistan and China.

He asserted that talks will only be held with groups that accept Pakistan’s constitution and stated that talks will not be conducted with entities he described as “friend-like enemies."

The remarks came during a meeting of Federal Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and convened to discuss the overall situation of the country in the aftermath of a series of terrorist and militant attacks a day earlier.

The meeting, was set top discuss a broad range of issues, with a focus on national security and the recent surge in terrorist activities.

As the discussions unfold, the cabinet is anticipated to take crucial decisions aimed at stabilising the country amidst growing security concerns.

Series of attacks jolt Balochistan

Balochistan province, already grappling with instability, faced multiple attacks in various districts on Monday.

The attacks began with the destruction of the Dozan railway bridge in the mountainous Bolan Valley. This critical infrastructure linked Balochistan with Sindh and Punjab via a train service. Reports indicated that its destruction has severed a vital connection, and further isolated the province.

The Musakhail district witnessed the most horrific incident in which 23 passengers were forced off a bus and brutally slain one after another.

The violence did not spare the Kalat district either, where an attack on security forces left 10 people dead, including five security officials and five civilians.

In Noshki, militants attacked near the Frontier Corps fort, resulting in injury to five civilians.

Further south, in the Sibi district, six bodies were discovered, adding to the rising toll from the violence. Militants also targeted the Daringarh police station in Mastung, though, fortunately, there were no casualties in this attack.

In the Pishin district, a hand grenade attack injured two people, with a government office as the target. Meanwhile, in Lasbella, three security officials were murdered in a targeted attack, though a major assault was repulsed by the forces.

In response to the attacks on innocent civilians, the military sprung into action and wiped out 21 suspected militants, while a major terrorist attack was thwarted in the Lasbela district.

5 terrorists killed, 3 injured in intelligence-based operations across Balochistan: ISPR

Five terrorists have been killed while three others were injured in intelligence-based operations (IBOs) carried out by security forces in multiple Balochistan districts, the military’s media affairs wing said on Friday.

In the latest flare-up of violence, dozens of militants affiliated with the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) — a separatist outfit — launched numerous attacks on Sunday midnight across Balochistan, targeting security personnel as well as civilians.

At least 50 people, including 14 security men, lost their lives as militants went on a rampage across the province, storming police stations, blowing up railway tracks, and setting fire to almost three dozen vehicles. In response, security forces neutralised 21 militants.

Among those killed were 23 people in Musakhail, mostly labourers from Punjab, who were offloaded from trucks and vans and shot dead after an identity check.

Referring to the deadly attacks earlier this week, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement today: “The security forces are conducting extensive intelligence-based operations (IBOs) to hunt down the perpetrators of these heinous acts.

“On night [of] 29/30 August, in three separate IBOs in District Kech, Panjgur, and Zhob, five terrorists were sent to hell by the security forces, while three terrorists got injured during the intense fire exchange,” the ISPR said.

It added that the sanitisation operations would “continue until all perpetrators, facilitators, and abetters of these atrocious acts are brought to justice”.

“Security forces of Pakistan, in step with the nation, remain determined to thwart attempts at sabotaging peace, stability, and progress of Balochistan,” the military asserted.

Following the spate of attacks, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday asserted that there was “no room for any weakness”. Similarly, President Asif Ali Zardari ordered effective measures to ensure the “complete elimination” of terrorism.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi vowed his full support for the Balochistan government in combating terrorism when he visited the province on Tuesday. PM Shehbaz also undertook a one-day trip to the region to assess the security situation there.

Rise in terror attacks

On August 19, three terrorists responsible for the killing of Panjgur’s deputy commissioner were eliminated in an operation by security forces in Mastung.

Separately, three soldiers were martyred and five terrorists were killed the same day after security forces foiled an infiltration attempt at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bajaur district.

In “extensive” IBOs conducted since August 20 in KP’s Khyber, security forces had neutralised 25 terrorists and injured 11 others.

The country has lately witnessed a sharp uptick in the number of attacks targeting security forces, other law enforcement agencies, and security checkpoints, particularly in Balochistan and KP.

Attacks escalated after the TTP broke a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022 and vowed to target security forces.

According to an annual security report issued by the Centre for Research and Security Studies, Pakistan witnessed 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations in 2023 — marking a record six-year high.

Islamabad has blamed Kabul for allowing the TTP — a separate group but aligned with the Afghan Taliban — to use Afghan soil for launching attacks inside Pakistan. However, the Taliban administration has denied the charges.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab has conducted 475 intelligence-based operations across various cities in the province, resulting in the arrest of 33 terrorists.

The arrested terrorists were reportedly planning to launch attacks aimed at spreading fear and chaos among the public.

These operations were carried out in cities including Lahore, Gujranwala, Mianwali, Bahawalpur, Nankana Sahib, Rahim Yar Khan, and Bhakkar, according to a CTD spokesperson

Among the arrests, a dangerous militant from the banned group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar was apprehended in Lahore.

During the raids, the CTD seized a significant cache of explosives, including a suicide vest, two hand grenades, 26 detonators, ammunition, mobile phones, and cash. These items were believed to be intended for use in terrorist activities across the province.

Six soldiers martyred, 12 terrorists killed during operations in Waziristan: ISPR

Six soldiers embraced martyrdom while 12 terrorists were killed during two encounters in North and South Waziristan districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Friday.

According to the military’s media wing, security forces on Thursday detected the movement of seven terrorists trying to infiltrate the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in North Waziristan’s Spinwam area, the statement said.

“The infiltrators were surrounded, effectively engaged and after an intense fire exchange, all seven khawarij were sent to hell,” the ISPR said, adding that a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was also recovered from the slain terrorists.

In July, the government, through an official notification, designated the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as Fitna al Khawarij, while mandating all institutions to use the term khariji (outcast) when referring to the perpetrators of terrorist attacks on Pakistan.

In a separate incident, a group of terrorists attacked a security forces checkpoint in South Waziristan’s Ladha area, the statement added.

“Own troops fought bravely, foiling the attempts of intrusion, and killed five khawarij,” the statement said.

“However, during an intense exchange of fire, six brave sons of the soil, having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat.”

The statement said that sanitisation operations were being conducted to eliminate any other khariji present in the area as security forces were determined to eliminate the “menace of terrorism” from the country.

“Such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” the ISPR said.

On September 6, four terrorists were killed when they tried to attack the Frontier Corps headquarters in KP’s Mohmand district.

In August, three soldiers were martyred and five terrorists were killed after security forces foiled an infiltration attempt at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the province’s Bajaur district.

Three suspected militants were killed and two policemen were wounded in two attacks in Swat and Lakki Marwat on Tuesday night, sources said.

The first attack took place in Swat when militants attacked a police contingent while it was patrolling the Asharay area of Matta tehsil.

Swat DPO Dr Zahidullah told Dawn that police from the Asharay post, in Matta tehsil, were on routine patrol at 11.40pm when they encountered five masked suspects on the road.

The masked men opened indiscriminate fire at the police party, causing injuries to sub-inspector Noor Wali Shah and constable Zakaria.

Police fired in retaliation, killing two of the five assailants on the spot, the DPO said.

The dead were later identified as Ahmad Hussain and Zahir Khan, residents of Khwazakhela Tehsil of Swat district. The three other masked men managed to escape.

“The militants used automatic weapons, but the law enforcers repulsed the attack, triggering a fierce clash which continued for some time,” he said.

Police launched a search operation and recovered the body of a militant identified as Inam, a resident of Shagai.

“An accomplice of the dead militant fled under cover of darkness,” he added.
