Without proper funding, this will be another sport that will exist on the sidelines with no real achievements to show.

Exactly need to get proper funding and support, but this is a sport Pakistan can excel in at asian level for sure.

Beating Iran is no joke, their ranked 10th in the world, while we are ranked 41, I believe.

Question for Mods, is this thread used for all sports Pakistan related except Cricket, Football and Hockey I assume.

Love volleyball incredibly technical sport. One I make sure to catch in Olympics. Best was 2016 Olympics in early morning.

Pakistan needs to invest in tennis and these kinds.

Watched a few sets from that final game. Man, that was absolute dominance. Though Pakistan dominated the whole cup but the final game was pure passion and dominance that we would love to watch from the players from other sports as well. Volleyball is not widely acknowledged and watched by many out there but it is one of the sports where Pakistan has done well than India, like Squash etc.

Paris-bound Faiqa wants to train under coach Fayyaz

LAHORE: With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, Pakistan’s fastest female sprinter Faiqa Riaz is facing a crucial dilemma in her training.

Despite receiving a wild card entry, Faiqa is currently training in Islamabad without her coach Fayyaz Ahmad, whom she credits for her success.

“The time is running short, and I need my coach, Sir Fayyaz, on an immediate basis to continue the old schedule of training,” Faiqa told Dawn in an exclusive interview on Monday.

“He has been coaching me for the last two years and has made a specific training programme,” she added.

Faiqa, who claimed the title of Pakistan’s fastest woman after winning the 100m race at the last National Championships, is currently training under Seemi Rizvi in Islamabad. However, she expressed her concern that changing coaches at this stage would affect her performance.

The 100m sprinter has already shown improvement in her timing, reaching 11.70 seconds with a hand-watch, and aims to win the heat to qualify for the final. “I am quite hopeful to earn some good results for my country,” she said.

Faiqa’s journey to the Olympics has not been without challenges. She initially pursued hockey but was denied a chance to play for Wapda. The setback saw her to switch to athletics and ultimately become national champion.

Faiqa also lamented the lack of support from the government and sports authorities, stating that neither the Punjab nor federal government has provided adequate assistance to athletes representing Pakistan in the Olympics.

“We are only seven players participating in the Paris Olympics, and it is the best time for every government to play their maximum role in our preparations so that we can deliver our best to earn laurels for the country,” Faiqa stated.

Paris 2024: Kishmala Talat, Pakistan’s first Olympic markswoman guns for historic medal

Slowing her breath and focusing on a bullseye in her pistol’s sights, Kishmala Talat is aiming to become the first woman from Pakistan to win an Olympic medal.

At the Paris Games starting on July 26, Talat will compete in the 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events, going for glory abroad and defying stereotypes back home.

Pakistan’s medal prospects are undercut by modesty codes which dissuade women from participating in sport.

The 21-year-old Talat, who comes from a military family, is the first Pakistani woman to qualify for Olympic shooting.

“In Pakistan there’s a prevalent taboo that dictates girls should stay at home, do girly things, and play with dolls, while boys are to play with guns,” she said.

“I see no one as competition. I compete with myself,” she told AFP at a target range in the eastern city of Jhelum.

Talat has won dozens of medals at national level and four internationally, including Pakistan’s first shooting medal ever, a bronze, at the Asian Games last year.

Pakistan have only ever won 10 Olympic medals -- all by men -- and none since the 1992 Games.

Talat, who has just completed her university degree in communications, realistically faces an uphill task to get on the podium in Paris.

She has a global ranking of 37th in the 10m event and is 41st in the 25m, according to the International Shooting Sport Federation.

“I longed for recognition. I wanted to do more,” she said.

“I wanted that whenever shooting is discussed, or ‘Kishmala’ is mentioned, it would be associated with someone who did something great for Pakistan.”

Hoping to defy the odds, she spends 10 hours a day training -- one hour of physical exercise and then four hours each on the 10m and 25m ranges.

The last hour in the evening is spent meditating, concentrating on the flickering flame of a candle in an attempt to hone the zen needed to find her target.

“I am dedicated to giving my best performance to let Pakistan’s name shine,” said Talat.

She takes her shots with her spare hand stuffed in her pocket and one eye covered by custom-fit glasses, her face frozen in expressionless concentration.

The sport of target shooting is not a common pursuit in Pakistan.

Cricket is by far the most popular pastime, but all sports suffer from chronic underfunding.

However, guns are omnipresent in Pakistan.

Swiss weapons research group the Small Arms Survey estimated in 2017 that there were nearly 44 million legal or illicit guns held by civilians in Pakistan.

The figure is the fourth highest globally and means there are 22 weapons per every hundred citizens in the nation of more than 240 million.

Talat’s talent has been nurtured by Pakistan’s military, the sixth-largest in the world with a vast budget allowing it to operate ski resorts, polo grounds and mountaineering academies.

Talat is trained by officers and a foreign coach at a military facility in Jhelum, known as “City of Martyrs” for its strong ties to the armed forces.

She hails from the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where the armed forces are headquartered.

Her 53-year-old mother, Samina Yaqoob, serves as a major in the military’s nursing service and proudly displays her daughter’s many medals in the family living room.

Yaqoob once dreamed of competing herself.

“I got married and got busy with that life, but it makes me happy when I see my daughter move forward with my dream,” she said.

“Girls should step forward, observe, work diligently and their parents should support them,” the mother said.

“She believes she can do anything. That’s just who she is.”

National javelin champion complains over PM's unfulfilled promises

Yasir Sultan, Pakistan's national javelin champion, has expressed his frustration, revealing that promises made to him by the government after his win have yet to be fulfilled.

While expressing happiness over fellow athlete Arshad Nadeem's international success, Yasir stated during a press conference in Lahore, "I am proud that Arshad Nadeem has made the country's name known worldwide. His achievements are a source of inspiration for all of us."

He said he was the current national champion, who won a bronze medal in June 2023 in the Asian Athletics Championship. However, the national javelin thrower voiced his disappointment over unkept commitments made by the government following his own success.

"The prime minister had announced Rs5 million as a reward for winning the bronze medal in the Asian Athletics Championship, but I have not received the money yet," Yasir lamented.

He added that despite repeated attempts to follow up on the reward, there has been no response from the authorities.

Yasir also shared his regret about the lack of support and competitive opportunities, saying, "It is a pity that I have not been given any competitions to participate in." Despite his accolades and national standing, the athlete feels sidelined, with no clear pathway for further development or participation in international events.

During the press conference, Yasir revealed that he had received offers to represent other countries in javelin competitions. "I have offers to play for many countries," Yasir stated.

The national javelin thrower called on the government and sports authorities to honour their promises and provide the necessary support to help athletes like him continue to represent Pakistan on the global stage.

The Pakistani javelin thrower secured his bronze at the Asian Athletics Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand last year, marking the country's first and only medal in the event. Yasir achieved a throw of 79.93 meters, falling more than 10 meters short of Arshad Nadeem's personal best at the time, as the top thrower missed the competition due to injury.

The gold medal went to Japan's Roderick Genki Dean, who achieved a throw of 83.15 meters, while India's DP Manu claimed silver with a distance of 81.01 meters.

This medal is Pakistan's first in the Asian Athletics Championship since 1991, when the country last made it to the podium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Yasir's performance placed Pakistan 17th on the medal table out of 42 participating nations.

Khyber karate centre trains youth for national, int’l success despite limited resources

The Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre was established in 1990 in a dilapidated, narrow building in Landi Kotal Bazaar. Initially, the centre aimed to protect local youth from drugs and engage them in positive activities, fostering a healthy community.

Over the years, the centre has not only achieved these goals but has also gained recognition by producing athletes who excel at both national and international levels.

In the past 34 years, more than 20,000 athletes have been trained at the Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre.

Originally founded to keep the youth away from drugs, the centre now also plays a role in protecting the younger generation from crime and terrorism. In a society where drug use is prevalent and law and order are fragile, the centre’s self-sustained provision of a positive and healthy environment has grown in importance.

Hayat Nazir Shinwari, the founder of Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre, told journalists that it was the first training facility of its kind across the tribal districts. He highlighted the extensive efforts behind the centre's success and its achievements.

"Several of our trainees have participated in international competitions and have won accolades," Shinwari said. He himself won a gold medal in the All Pakistan Karate Tournament in 1994 and has been serving as the Pakistan Branch Chief on behalf of Japan for many years.

Noor Aslam Shinwari, a trainee of the Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre, told The Express Tribune that he represented Pakistan in a tournament held in Tokyo in April 2024. His outstanding performance earned him an international referee certificate from the Japan National Karate Association.

"An international karate tournament is scheduled to be held in Korea on 25 August 2024, and our team has been invited," Shinwari said. "While half of our team has managed to arrange visas and travel necessities through self-help, the lack of financial resources prevents the other half from participating, causing distress for our athletes."

Another athlete trained at the Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre, Ghani Shinwari, won the Asia Cup held in Korea. Ghani mentioned that the centre's athletes have competed in international karate tournaments in Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, bringing pride to Khyber District.

During the visit to the Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre, reporters observed several athletes who initially suffered from bone and joint issues. Continuous karate practice has significantly improved their health, allowing them to compete on par with their peers.

However, the athletes at the Khyber Kyokushin Karate Centre express disappointment over the lack of recognition from the Pakistani government, despite their achievements being acknowledged internationally. "With government support, it won’t be long before hundreds of athletes from our centre participate in international karate competitions and bring honour to our country," they said.

Pakistan debuts in major US ice hockey tournament, defeats Brazil after two losses

Pakistan is competing in an international ice hockey tournament being held in Coral Springs, United States, in which the young team this week defeated Brazil after two consecutive losses in its very first appearance in a major contest, Pakistani state media reported on Sunday, citing the US National Hockey League (NHL).

Team Pakistan, a combination of players of Pakistani descent, was hastily put together by Donny Khan, a Pakistani-American and a senior NHL official. The NHL is a highly popular ice hockey league in North America that comprises 32 teams — 25 in the US and 7 in Canada. It has been growing and now teams from all over the world are taking part in it.

Pakistan made its debut this year after Khan worked hard and found 18 players of Pakistani origin from across the US, who are now sporting the national green and white colors and representing Pakistan at the Latin America (LATAM) Cup at the Florida Panthers IceDen in Coral Springs. Umar Khan, a Pakistani-American and a former NHL intern, helped Khan find players through word of mouth and scouring social media.

The tournament features 52 men’s, women’s and youth teams and more than 1,100 players representing 17 countries and territories, including Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Pakistan is the latest addition to the tournament.

“Three games at City College and now I’m representing my country [Pakistan]. Ever since I got into (ice) hockey, I’ve been dreaming about bringing it back to Pakistan,” the state-run APP news agency quoted Pakistan defenseman Saem Iftikhar as saying.

Iftikhar, a student at City College in New York, won a berth in the national team after playing just five games.

“I look around and I see Pakistani heritage players,” he said. “This is a dream come true. I think it’s the first step in a much larger operation.”

Pakistan went down fighting to Mexico 6-5 on Thursday and lost the opening match to Chile 8-3 on Wednesday. After the initial losses, the Pakistani team rebounded on Friday to record its first victory in the prestigious tournament, defeating Brazil 5-2, according to the APP report.

Khan said Pakistan’s LATAM Cup debut would not be a one-off thing, and he and other players were already talking about returning with another men’s team, and a women’s team.

“We’re actually in conversations right now with the Winter Sports Federation of Pakistan. We have their official blessing. We’re trying to fully establish ourselves as a club and part of the sports federation of Pakistan,” he was quoted as saying.

“The long-term goal is that we inspire people in Pakistan and eventually have a team Pakistan in the Asia Winter Games and one day, God willing, in the Winter Olympics.”

Umar, who helped Khan form the Pakistan team, said his father always taught him to be “passionate about my heritage.”

“Just being able to represent my father’s country, my grandfather, who came from Lahore in the 1940s, and just to represent them and put it in the game that I love, I was ecstatic about it,” he said.
