Shimron Hetmyer blasted the third fastest Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) century of all time as Guyana Amazon Warriors recorded a thumping 72-run victory over Jamaica Tallawahs, who lost their last eight wickets for just 35 runs in Florida.

The Tallawahs had won their first three matches of the tournament but were blown away by Hetmyer before their run-chase was hobbled by three wickets – including the big one of Andre Russell for just a single – in the space of six balls as their pursuit of the Warriors’ imposing 209/7 fell away completely after the halfway stage.

Imran Tahir kicked off the carnage with an inspired piece of fielding off his own bowling. Picking up the ball in his follow-through, he turned and threw down the stumps with David Miller – making his first appearance of the season for the Tallawahs after arriving from South Africa duty in Sri Lanka – short of his ground despite a desperate dive.

Tahir then bowled Phillips for 43 with his very next ball before Devendra Bishoo snared the big man Russell at the start of the 12th over. He was caught, fittingly, by Hetmyer.

The supremely talented 21-year-old absolutely had earlier dominated proceedings for the 13.2 overs he was at the crease. Shoaib Malik was far from a silent partner in their 108-run partnership – at one point taking Samuel Badree down the ground for three consecutive sixes and ultimately reaching 50 in just 32 balls – yet still Hetmyer scored 100 of the 149 runs the Warriors plundered while he was in the middle.

The ball flew to all parts of Central Broward Regional Park as Hetmyer accrued 11 fours and five big Hero Maximums in a whirlwind 49-ball stay at the crease. Spinners were dispatched with particular panache, yet no bowler was spared.

When Russell tried to bounce Hetmyer his response was equally emphatic as the left-hander swatted a hook into the stands to reach his 50. He was just getting started, with his century coming up in just 47 balls. Russell is the only man ever to score a faster one in the Hero CPL, while at 21 Hetmyer is the youngest centurion in the six-year history of the tournament.

Hetmyer fell straight after reaching his century, deceived by a clever slower ball from the persevering Oshane Thomas, who also removed Sherfane Rutherford as he pulled things back nicely in his second spell to end with respectable figures of 2/32 after his first two overs had cost 23.

With Shoaib falling to Krishmar Santokie for a round 50, the Warriors were unable to fully maximize the dominant position Hetmyer had created, with a flurry of wickets as the middle order came out swinging. They still brought up the 200 in the final over, with Rayad Emrit providing the perfect finish with a huge six from Santokie’s final delivery to lift the final total to 209/7.

Chasing such a target the Tallawahs had little option but to go hard from ball one, and Kennar Lewis certainly took that message to heart as the first delivery of the run-chase went over midwicket for four. Two more boundaries followed, but bowler Keemo Paul got his revenge as Lewis holed out to Malik looking for a fourth boundary of the over.

That brought New Zealand pair Glenn Phillips and Ross Taylor together. They were initially watchful after the loss of that early wicket but soon found their stride. Phillips just two from nine balls when he hit his first Hero Maximum but three more soon followed as he raced through the second half of the Power Play. At 67/1, the Tallawahs were right where they needed to be.

Taylor had reached 30 in good time – helped by a rare five when a quick single also brought four overthrows after a wild throw – before he attempted to sweep the excellent Chris Green and popped up a simple catch for keeper Luke Ronchi.

Miller joined Phillips and at the halfway stage the Tallawahs were still well on track at 101/2, before those three wickets in six balls turned things decisively the Warriors’ way.

From 102/2 the Tallawahs slumped to 137 all out. Green and Tahir both picked up well deserved second wickets, while there was little surprise when the last wicket fell to another run out – the third of the Tallawahs’ collapse.

Guyana’s victory puts the Warriors alongside the Tallawahs on three wins from four games at the top of the Hero CPL table.

Javon Searles slapped the final ball of the night for four as Trinbago Knight Riders produced their second successive unlikely Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) run-chase to gain revenge on Jamaica Tallawahs with a four-wicket victory in Florida.

Andre Russell’s one-man show had stunned the Knight Riders back in game three, but this time it was the Knight Riders captain Dwayne Bravo who was celebrating after his six-laden 11-ball 36 proved so crucial in snatching a victory that had looked so unlikely when Trinbago slumped to 28/3 at the end of the Power Play in pursuit of 183.

The two sides in truth produced uncannily similar innings at Central Broward Regional Park, with run-scoring proving difficult in the first 10 overs before rapid acceleration after the midway point. The Tallawahs turned 58/3 into a seemingly impenetrable 182/5 thanks to 80 from Glenn Phillips and 72* for David Miller; the Knight Riders surpassed it as a midway 62/3 became a matchwinning 184/6.

Darren Bravo, the hero of the victory over St Lucia Stars on Thursday, was to the fore again, striking five more Hero Maximums in a 35-ball 50 as he shared a century stand with Colin Munro, who filled the Phillips role with an expertly-paced 67 from 51 before being bowled round his legs by Russell. Skipper Dwayne Bravo provided the crucial shot of impetus the Knight Riders needed with three successive sixes off Krishmar Santokie in the 18th over and five in all in a blistering 11-ball stay at the crease.

Having needed 12 an over from the eighth over onwards, the Knight Riders somehow needed just seven from the final over. But there was still a twist to come in this extraordinary game. Dwayne Bravo was caught on the boundary looking for the match-winning Hero Maximum to leave Javon Searles to find five runs from the last two balls. A scampered two to long-off and a slap through cover off the back foot to the boundary did the job to spark scenes of jubilation.

But the 106 added by Darren Bravo and Munro should not be forgotten among all that late drama. Without it the Knight Riders would have been doomed, and the influence of that duo for the champions this season is highlighted by the fact Darren Bravo now tops the Hero Maximum Race with 19, while Munro’s innings here took him ahead of St Lucia Stars captain Kieron Pollard at the top of the 2018 Hero CPL run-scoring charts.

For much of the game, Darren Bravo looked like he might be the Knight Riders’ fall guy after a costly dropped catch.

Phillips had made only 44 from 41 balls when Bravo spilled a simple chance at a time when the Tallawahs were still looking to recovrecovering from their own slow start.

Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre came into the side with stunning and instant impact. He trapped Kennar Lewis lbw for just a single and also dismissed Steven Taylor cheaply as his four overs bowled off the reel at the top of the innings brought him 2/19.

With Ross Taylor also failing to reach double figures before falling to Fawad Ahmed, the Tallawahs were in significant early trouble.

Phillips and Miller were watchful, to the extent that the run-rate only climbed back above six in the 12th over.

The key moment of the innings arrived at the start of the 15th over. The Tallawahs were still on a flimsy-looking 91/3 with overs starting to run out when Phillips attempted a switch hit off Ahmed and sliced a simple catch to Darren Bravo in the deep. Inexplicably, the chance went begging. When Phillips did fall four overs later he had 80 runs to his name from 55 balls and the score had moved on to 159/4. Phillips’ ferocious hitting after his let-off included another switch hit for six and a pair of outrageous ramp shots over wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin. He struck five Hero Maximums in all.

Miller was more fluent from the off, with his half-century coming up in just 25 balls with a nonchalant flick off his pads over square-leg for six. He was there at the end to dispatch the last two balls of the innings for a four and his fifth six of the day, way back over long-on, to finish on an unbeaten 72 from 34 balls.

In all, 80 came from the last five overs of the innings – and that was with Russell contributing only a couple of runs from a three-ball stay at the crease.

Momentum was firmly with the Tallawahs, and the Knight Riders needed a good start to their innings. They didn’t get it. Pinch-hitter Sunil Narine fell without scoring, caught by Russell at mid-on off left-arm spinner Imad Wasim, before a horrible mix-up in the calling saw Chris Lynn run out by half the length of the pitch to leave the run-chase in early disarray at 10/2.

The Power Play ended with Brendon McCullum carving Oshane Thomas to Steven Taylor at point. He made only 8, and the Knight Riders had limped to 28/3 in those first six overs.

They were leaving themselves even more work to do in the remainder of the innings than the Tallawahs had earlier in the day, with the required rate reaching two a ball as early as the ninth over.

Darren Bravo and Munro recovered the situation, though, before Dwayne Bravo and right at the very end Searles added the finishing touches to complete a thrilling victory.

The Knight Riders now have three wins from their five matches, as do the Tallawahs who have suffered back-to-back defeats in Florida after starting their campaign with three victories.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 70/3 (Thomas 38*, Hodge 1/1) beat St Lucia Stars 69 (Qais Ahmad 24, Cottrell 3/14, Lamichhane 2/13, Mahmudullah 2/20) by seven wickets with 74 balls remaining


St Lucia Stars crashed to a humiliating seven-wicket defeat to St Kitts & Nevis Patriots after collapsing to 69 all out inside 13 overs at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.

It was a dispiriting effort from a Stars side that had just ended their two-year wait for a Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory and had been in such good form with the bat.

Their two previous home games at Gros Islet had produced totals of 212/2 and a Hero CPL record 226/6, making Tuesday’s capitulation to the third lowest score in Hero CPL history all the more disappointing.

Teenaged all-rounder Qais Ahmad was the only man to offer serious resistance with a battling 24 as wickets tumbled all around him, with Sheldon Cottrell, Mahmudullah and Sandeep Lamichhane the chief destroyers for the Patriots.

Cottrell started and finished the demolition. Having been hit for six by Andre Fletcher from the first ball of the night, Cottrell had his revenge with a simple caught-and-bowled from the fourth. He wrapped the innings up just 71 balls later as Obed McCoy edged through to wicket-keeper Devon Thomas – who played his part with two stumpings and two catches to equal Kumar Sangakkara’s Hero CPL record for most wicket-keeping dismissals in a game, and then added 38 not out in the simple run-chase.

In between those two wickets, Cottrell also netted the big fish as the Stars captain Kieron Pollard failed to read a slower ball and only succeeded in poking it to cover.

By then the Stars were already in desperate trouble at 24/4, Rahkeem Cornwall and Lendl Simmons having both fallen to off-spinner Mahmudullah, who bagged 2/20 from four overs off the reel with the new ball.

When Australia superstar David Warner fell to the irrepressible Sandeep Lamichhane for 14 and Ben Cutting removed Daren Sammy at the ground that bears his name for a three-ball duck there was no way back for the Stars.

Kavem Hodge also departed without scoring after edging Cutting through to Thomas. Qais Ahmad bludgeoned a couple of defiant sixes before he fell to Lamichhane and from there the end was swift.

Mitchell McClenaghan was run out after a horrible mix-up with Kesrick Williams before Cottrell applied the finishing touch.

So one-sided was the contest that the Patriots had the luxury of giving Chris Gayle the innings off to rest a thumb injury he suffered last time out against Jamaica Tallawahs.

Evin Lewis and Thomas opened the innings and, with pressure off and attacking fields, set about reducing the already meagre target.

Thomas smashed three fours from the second over, bowled by McCoy, before Lewis took McClenaghan for 10 runs in two but then perished splicing a short ball to Warner at mid-on.

It was a missed opportunity for Lewis to find some form with the pressure off – his 13 here still quadrupled his tally after a run of four runs in his last five T20 innings for Windies and the Patriots.

That was a minor blemish for the Patriots, as were the loss of Brandon King for an 11-ball 17 and a slightly farcical run out for Tom Cooper, dismissed for nought with just three runs needed for victory as he and Thomas found themselves both racing for the bowler’s end as keeper Fletcher removed the bails at the other.

Thomas was still there at the end, though, stroking the winning run to end with 38 from 21 as the Patriots got over the line with a whopping 12.2 overs in hand.

Steve Smith scored 63 and took 2/19 as Barbados Tridents stole a remarkable two-run Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory against Jamaica Tallawahs in Florida.

The Tallawahs’ failure to chase down 157 having powered to 80/0 in the first nine overs of their run-chase means it’s now three defeats from three at Central Broward Regional Park for a team that started their Hero CPL campaign with three straight victories.

Even when a few wickets fell around the midway point of the innings and the required rate began to climb the Tallawahs always appeared to have things under control. Even when tight bowling from Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz left Raymon Reifer with nine runs to defend in the final over the game appeared to be the Tallawahs’ to lose.

But Ross Taylor and David Miller were only able to take five runs from the first four balls of the over and suddenly the pressure was all on the batsmen. When Reifer delivered the perfect yorker with the fifth ball, the Tallawahs had somehow needed four from the final ball of a run-chase that had looked so straightforward.

Miller could only heave the final delivery down the ground for a single, prompting celebrations from the Tridents players while Andre Russell was left unused on the Tallawahs bench.

Reifer took the congratulations for a fine closing over – making amends for a poor initial spell and two dropped catches in the deep – but there was no doubt about the hero of the hour for the Tridents.

Before his two wickets to stop the Tallawahs running away with it, Steve Smith had been the chief architect of the Tridents’ recovery from 39/3, sharing an intelligent and increasingly assured 103-run partnership with Shai Hope. The Tridents’ 156/6 looked a few runs below par at the halfway stage, but it gave them something to bowl at which would prove so critical later in the night.

It didn’t look that way when Johnson Charles and Glenn Phillips got the run-chase off to a flier for the Tallawahs. Charles smacked Jason Holder for five successive fours in the third over, while Phillips smashed two fours and a six from Raymon Reifer’s first over – the fifth of the innings. Those two overs alone brought 36 runs as the Tallawahs openers took the target down to double-figures inside the Power Play with 61/0 on the board after six overs.

The Tridents fought back, though, with a double breakthrough from an unlikely source. Steve Smith hadn’t taken a T20 wicket since 2014, but the Australian picked up two in five balls as both openers were sent packing in the 10th over. Charles was the first to go, caught by Martin Guptill on the deep mid-wicket boundary, before Phillips was caught behind trying to work the ball to leg.

And Smith could have had a third wicket when Kennar Lewis was dropped by Reifer at long-on. To add to Smith’s frustration, the ball bounced out of Reifer’s hands and over the ropes for six.

Lewis was dropped twice more on his way to a streaky 17 before edging to Nicholas Pooran to hand Mohammad Irfan his first wicket of the 2018 Hero CPL.

The Tridents were suddenly able to squeeze the Tallawahs, and what had looked for most of the night to be a routine run-chase was suddenly in doubt when 37 were needed from the last four overs of the innings with Taylor and Miller struggling to find the boundary.

Both men did find fours in the next couple of overs, but the game was now firmly in the balance with 20 needed from the last two overs.

The first ball of the penultimate over was heaved for four by Miller, who was then dropped by Shai Hope at deep midwicket. It left the Tallawahs needing nine from the final over, a target that proved beyond them as the Tridents pinched an unlikely victory.

The Tallawahs had looked the likelier winners almost all night from the moment they reduced the Tridents from 36/0 to 39/3.

A careless run out for Dwayne Smith at the non-striker’s end when Hashim Amla drove the ball to Rovman Powell at mid-on triggered that collapse.

After the run out of Dwayne Smith, Samuel Badree struck to remove Amla before the pace of Oshane Thomas did for Guptill, who had his stumps rearranged by a full and rapid delivery.

But Steve Smith and Hope slowly and surely rebuilt the innings.

Smith injected the momentum with back-to-back sixes off fellow Australian Adam Zampa, and later brought up the hundred partnership with an outrageous Hero Maximum carved over backward point off Russell.

Hope took longer to get going but also smashed three sixes in his 43 before being deceived by a Russell slower ball and getting bowled off the inside edge.

Smith fell in slightly bizarre fashion, dismissed twice in one ball looking for the boundary in the final over. Having miscued Russell to be caught at long-on, Smith also contrived to hit his stumps with his bat in the follow-through of his swing. Under the game’s laws, the catch takes precedence.

A run out from the final ball of the innings left the Tridents with 156/6 and, while it represented a fine recovery from 39/3, it looked no more than a working total. But it would prove just enough to leave the Tallawahs scratching their heads and wondering just how this game had slipped out of their reach.

Wow, amazing performance from Irfan! If he remains consistent the only thing stopping him from getting into the team are his fitness issues.

Have been disappointed by the CPL this year.

Even though it's moved to Sky, there are (i) no speed guns, (ii) no DRS (iii) scheduling has been awful (St Lucia have played eight games, whilst Barbados have only played four) and (iv) the commentary is average.

Other than the atmosphere the CPL needs a lot of work.
 
Chris Green replaces Shoaib Malik for Amazon Warriors

Shoaib Malik will be returning to Pakistan to link up with his national team for a training camp ahead of the Asia Cup, as a result Chris Green will be staying on with the squad for the rest of the 2018 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL). Green originally joined the Amazon Warriors squad as cover for Cameron Delport but he will now stay with the team until the end of the tourmament.

Green has impressed for the Guyanese franchise so far in this year’s Hero CPL picking up five wickets with an excellent economy rate of 6.5 runs per over. He also made an important contribution with the bat in the win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots where he made 25 not out.

The Amazon Warriors are currently fourth place in the Hero CPL standings with three wins from their first five matches. The top four teams at the end of the group stage will make it into the knockout phase of the tournament with the final taking place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad on 16 September.
 
Warriors edge out Patriots to grab fourth victory

Guyana Amazon Warriors 169/6 (Tanvir 37*, Mohammed 36, Brathwaite 2/23, Cutting 2/36) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 168/7 (Gayle 40, Devcich 35, Imran Tahir 4/22) by four wickets with one ball remaining

Imran Tahir’s four-wicket burst and Sohail Tanvir’s late fireworks with the bat saw Guyana Amazon Warriors to a thrilling four-wicket Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at Warner Park.

A fourth win in six leaves the Warriors well-placed at the head of the Hero CPL table, alongside Trinbago Knight Riders and Jamaica Tallawahs on eight points.

An all-round batting effort in which six men reached double-figures but nobody made more than Tanvir’s 37 not out saw the Warriors overhaul the Patriots’ 168/7 in the final over as the home side were left to rue a wayward bowling performance that gave up 19 extras – 15 of which were wides.

Luke Ronchi got the run-chase off to a brisk start with 28 from 16 balls but wickets fell at regular intervals and for much of the innings the Warriors appeared to be behind the pace as Carlos Brathwaite and Mahmudullah produced tight spells and Ben Cutting grabbed one of the catches of the season with a flying one-handed grab on the boundary to remove the dangerous Cameron Delport.

Tanvir, though, turned the game brilliantly and decisively Guyana’s way. He has form in the Hero CPL having made an 18- ball 50 for St. Lucia Zouks and teed off here to make an unbeaten 37 from 20 and lead his side home.

The penultimate over delivered by Sheldon Cottrell proved the key as Tanvir started and finished it with big Hero Maximums over the leg-side to leave the Warriors needing just three more runs from the final over.

Despite a couple of nervy dot balls Tanvir and Chris Green scrambled the three singles they needed to get over the line with a ball to spare.

The Patriots had earlier finished with a competitive total in a stop-start innings that leant heavily on Chris Gayle at the start and some lower-order hitting as Tahir dominated the middle overs with a mesmerizing spell of 4/22.

Gayle was initially watchful, recording just a single from his first nine balls, but roared into life when a full-toss from Green allowed him to free his arms and launch the first of his three Hero Maximums. The other two followed in the fifth over, bowled by the previously unhittable Tanvir. Gayle added three fours in the over for good measure to more than double the score at 47/0 while also becoming the first man to cross 2000 career runs in the Hero CPL.

With new Warriors captain Rayad Emrit’s first over going for 15 - Evin Lewis taking 10 from two balls in a welcome return to form - the Power Play had brought 62/0 despite only 12 runs being on the board after three.

The Warriors needed something to change, and it did. Keemo Paul started his spell inauspiciously with three wides well outside Gayle’s off stump, but that line did the trick in the end as the big man slashed a cut to Cameron Delport at point to depart for 40 from 27 balls.

That wicket and the introduction of Tahir sparked a collapse from 71/0 to 102/5 that would in the end prove so important. Bowling almost exclusively googlies, Tahir took a wicket in each of his four overs to rob the Patriots of any mid-innings momentum and derail their flying start.

Lewis was caught at short third-man for 28, and the first ball after the Carib Drinks break hurried through Brandon King’s defences. Devon Thomas was trapped plumb in front by a big-spinning wrong ‘un before Mahmudullah holed out to mid-wicket.

Tom Cooper was lbw to Roshon Thomas for just 9 as Anton Devcich held the middle part of the innings together for the Patriots almost single-handedly with 35 off 24 before falling to Tanvir’s final ball of the night.

That left big-hitting all-rounders Ben Cutting and Carlos Brathwaite the final over to attack, a task they approached with gusto. Cutting launched two sixes down the ground before Brathwaite crunched the last ball of the innings back past the expensive Emrit for four, but their efforts would be upstaged by Tanvir’s in the end.

Tallawahs take down Tridents to regain top spot

Jamaica Tallawahs 153/5 (Charles 53, Powell 35*, Wahab Riaz 2/27) beat Barbados Tridents 151/9 (Guptill 73, Thomas 2/22) by five wickets with 16 balls remaining

Jamaica Tallawahs are top of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) after beating Barbados Tridents by five wickets at the Kensington Oval to make it five wins from eight.

A third straight home defeat for the Tridents, meanwhile, leaves them facing an uphill battle to reach the play-offs as they paid the price for a top-order collapse that left them too much to do to get back in the game.

The Tridents slumped to 55/5 against a fine all-round bowling performance from the Tallawahs, spearheaded by the superb Oshane Thomas, before Martin Guptill, Imran Khan and Ashley Nurse engineered a recovery to take the final score to 151/9.

But that total was soon put in perspective by a swashbuckling 28-ball half-century for Tallawahs opener Johnson Charles. Although the Tallawahs’ innings slowed down for a while after his departure for 53 time was on their side and, despite a couple of alarms, they always appeared to have the chase in hand.

The arrival of David Miller to the crease after Kennar Lewis fell for 8 saw a fresh injection of impetus as he dispatched Nurse for six then four in successive deliveries.

Rovman Powell got in on the act, heaving two sixes and a four into the leg-side in the 14th over from Mohammad Irfan to take the required rate down to just a run a ball for the final six overs.

The 15th over moved the game forward significantly for both sides as a snorter from Wahab Riaz flicked Miller’s glove on its way through to Nicholas Pooran before Andre Russell was run out four balls later. In between, Russell launched his first ball for six over square-leg and added a four to fine-leg from a free-hit.

At the end of it all the equation was 24 from 30 but with only five wickets in hand. Powell was still going strong, though, and was joined by New Zealander Colin de Grandhomme to steer the Tallawahs past the Tridents total without further alarm and with 16 balls in hand.

The Tridents were indebted to Guptill and the 60-run sixth-wicket stand he shared with Imran Khan to keep the game competitive in an innings where all seven bowlers used by the Tallawahs finished with at least one wicket.

The Tridents were flirting with total disaster at 55/5, but Guptill finally found a willing ally in Khan and, aided by a rain break to clear their heads, the pair played sensibly and aggressively when possible to slowly but surely drag things back.

Guptill reached 50 in 41 balls on his way to 73 from 60, while Khan and Nurse – who hit Andre Russell for two fours and a six in the final over to lift the total beyond 150 – both added 20 in an innings where nobody else reached double-figures.

Batting had been difficult against both spin and seam with the new ball on a pitch showing some uneven bounce, but the Tridents will still reflect on some self-inflicted wounds.

Hashim Amla was leg-before attempting to sweep Samuel Badree before the ball of the night, and perhaps the tournament, ended Shai Hope’s stay at the crease. Oshane Thomas has been one of the 2018 Hero CPL’s standout performers, and he produced something close to unplayable with a rapid yorker that arced away from the batsman at the last moment to crash into middle stump. Thomas would later return at the death to rearrange the stumps once more, Wahab Riaz the victim this time.

Steve Smith fell before the PowerPlay was out, playing away from his body against de Grandhomme and getting a bottom edge through to wicket-keeper Glenn Phillips.

Worse was to come for the Tridents in the following over when a mix-up saw skipper Jason Holder run out by Charles’ direct hit from mid-wicket.

Pooran fell soon after, carving Adam Zampa to long-off where Kemar Roach held a smart running catch.

Serene through it all was Guptill, who hit four fours and three Hero Maximums – two of which cleared the stands – in an intelligent innings that combined aggression with stout defence in tough conditions.

Khan played his part in the recovery, but when he and Guptill both fell to boundary catches in successive overs the Tridents were still short of where they needed to be despite a decent fightback and Nurse’s enterprising late hitting.

Guyana Amazon Warriors 168/2 (Ronchi 67*, Walton 43, Hetmyer 30, Wahab Riaz 1/26) beat Barbados Tridents 165/7 (Pooran 46, S Smith 40, Hope 34, Imran Tahir 2/21, Sohail Tanvir 2/28, Primus 2/30) by eight wickets with 20 balls remaining

A quick-fire 96-run opening partnership set Guyana Amazon Warriors on their way to a comfortable Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory over Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval.

The Warriors made light work of a 166-run target, easing to an eight-wicket victory inside 17 overs as they jumped back above Jamaica Tallawahs and Trinbago Knight Riders in what looks like a three-way fight for the top two spots in the Hero CPL table.

The Tridents find themselves firmly at the other end of the table after a fourth straight home defeat and likely needing to win all three of their remaining games to extend their season into the play-offs.

Luke Ronchi (67* off 40) and Chadwick Walton (43 off 34) ensured the Warriors were never in serious danger of falling short of the Tridents’ 165/7 with a flurry of early boundaries to break the back of the chase before Shimron Hetmyer and Cameron Delport continued the charge.

On a night when Barbados hailed Sir Garry Sobers to mark the 50th anniversary of his six sixes in an over, Ronchi briefly stirred hopes of the most fitting tribute of all when he deposited the first two balls of Jason Holder’s second over beyond the ropes. He fell short of perfection in the end, but the over still brought Ronchi 24 runs as the Warriors raced to 70 without loss inside the six-over PowerPlay.

Walton was more than playing his part at the other end before holing out to hand Ashley Nurse a wicket which did little to stem the flow.

Hetmyer smashed three Hero Maximums over mid-wicket in the space of four balls in the 11th and 12th overs to bring the target below a run a ball, while Ronchi duly completed a fine half-century in just 26 balls.

The New Zealand wicket-keeper then flicked Jason Holder over the long-leg boundary for the 350th six of the 2018 Hero CPL season as the Warriors’ batsmen continued to toy with the bowlers.

Hetmyer was expertly caught on the long-on boundary by Steve Smith, taking the ball above his head and then throwing it in the air before his momentum took him beyond the boundary before jumping back in to play to complete the catch, but by then the target was down to 20 runs from 32 balls.

Delport wasted little time in launching his first six of the night back down the ground off Chemar Holder and then carving the winning boundary as the Warriors cruised home.

The Tridents had needed successive 50 partnerships for the fourth and fifth wickets to post any kind of total after slumping to 39/3 inside the Power Play.

Steve Smith anchored those two partnerships with a 33-ball 40, with first Shai Hope (34 off 24) and then most impressively Nicholas Pooran (46 off 27) playing the big shots around him.

It was a solid effort after Roshon Primus’ double-strike had checked the Tridents.

With Martin Guptill already gone, caught off Sohail Tanvir trying and failing to clear mid-off, Primus took out two big wickets with successive deliveries in his first over. Dwayne Smith had looked back to his best in racing to 28 from 15 balls on his return to the side before flicking the ball into the hands of Hetmyer at deep square-leg, with Hashim Amla then deceived by a slower ball and chipping a simple catch to cover.

And it was Primus again who ended Hope’s innings just as it appeared on the cusp of becoming a really telling contribution, a bullet one-bounce throw from the deep leaving the batsman well short of completing an optimistic second run.

Hope had looked in fine nick, but Pooran carried on where his team-mate had left off. Primus and Tanvir were both hit for Hero Maximums – the first of them a one-handed drive over wide long-off and the second a classic pull shot 20 well in front of square and deep into the stands.

Steve Smith finally fell to a well-judged catch from Chris Green diving forward at long-on to hand Tanvir a second wicket before Pooran was one of two wickets to fall at a cost of just four runs in an excellent closing over from Imran Tahir.

Colin Munro, Dwayne Bravo help Trinbago return to the top

n unbeaten 76 from Colin Munro and Dwayne Bravo's ballistic hitting towards the end set up win for Trinbago Knight Riders over St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League 2018.

The win saw Trinbago, the defending champions, displacing Guyana Amazon Warriors at the top of the table.

After being put in to bat first, Trinbago did brilliantly to put up a total of 199/4. Munro's 50-ball 76* was crucial to the total, while contributions also came from Brendon McCullum (35) and Darren Bravo (18), but the real special innings was Dwayne Bravo's 37* in 11 balls. In reply, Patriots could only get to 153/8.

"I am happy with the effort of the guys and those two points. We got a good bunch of professional players who are hungry for success. We go back home as we have found momentum. We want to keep winning and finish in the top two. Winning is an attitude. The aim is to get those two chances to enter the final," Trinbago captain Dwayne Bravo said after the game.

Bravo's belligerent cameo gave the right impetus to the innings, as the right-hander smashed five sixes and one four in the 11 deliveries he faced. All the sixes came in the penultimate over bowled by Alzarri Joseph, where he hit 30 runs. Munro, on the other hand, maintained a strike rate of over 150 and the duo put up an unbeaten partnership of 66 runs in 20 deliveries for the fifth wicket.

"I tried to stay focused against Joseph. Today was my day and I think the youngster will learn from his mistakes," acknowledged Bravo.

Evin Lewis tried to set the tone for the chase with a 37-ball 52 at the top of the order, but did not receive much support from the rest of the batting order. Chris Gayle, his skipper and opening partner, was caught behind off Anderson Philip for a 12-ball 9 in the fourth over, after the pair had added 22 runs for the first wicket. A promising partnership was building between Lewis and Rassie van der Dussen, who came in at one-down, but was cut short at 29 after Fawad Ahmed dismissed the South African with a well-disguised googly in the seventh over.

A 37-run stand for the fourth wicket between Lewis and Devon Thomas did develop, but the opener was trapped lbw by Philip soon after. Thomas tried to steady the ship with his 22-ball 23, but was caught behind when he edged Ali Khan to Dinesh Ramdin in the 15th over.

The Patriots innings wilted thereafter, as Trinbago scalped three wickets in the last four overs to kill the chase. Philip, who returned figures of 3/40 in his four-over spell was the pick of the bowlers. He was supported well by Ahmed (2/28) and Dwayne Bravo (1/26).

Sunil Narine, meanwhile, has now gone wicketless for the fourth straight match. But he also reached the milestone of 700 dot balls in the tournament in the game.

"I thought the bowlers did well earlier. Young Joseph bowled well until that one over against Bravo. The momentum was with them after they got (close to) 200. We are only one win away from qualifying. Hopefully, everything will fall in place. Good to see Lewis among runs, he's a key player for us at the top. Tomorrow is a big game against Jamaica," said Gayle.

St Kitts & Nevis Patriots secured a Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) play-off spot with a thrilling rain-affected Duckworth-Lewis-Stern victory over Jamaica Tallawahs at Warner Park.

Victory for the Patriots means they can no longer be caught in the Hero CPL table by Barbados Tridents or St Lucia Stars, yet it looked unlikely when Rovman Powell was propelling the Tallawahs to 206/6 at the halfway stage.

But the Patriots, crucially, made an explosive start to their run-chase with Chris Gayle setting the tone with four fours in the first over.

Despite losing Evin Lewis to his first ball in the next over, bowled off the inside edge by Oshane Thomas, the run-rate didn’t slip with Gayle joined by Rassie van der Dussen to take the score to 65/1 from 6.3 overs when the rain came.

That strong position meant that the DLS calculation gave the Patriots a fighting chance when the innings was reduced to 11 overs after the rain cleared. The equation came back as 118 from 11 overs; 53 more runs from another 27 balls.

Gayle launched a six down the ground but was then caught at deep square-leg. When Ben Cutting was bowled first ball by Adam Zampa it looked like the revised target was beyond the Patriots.

But van der Dussen (45* from 24) was joined by Mahmudullah (28* from 11) for an astonishing partnership that raced the Patriots to their revised target with five balls to spare.

Thomas had bowled two fine overs before the rain, conceding just five runs to go with the wicket of Lewis, but his one remaining over after the rain proved decisive.

Van der Russen smashed the first two balls for sixes and, after he collected a single, Mahmudullah took over. Two fours were steered to third-man before the over finished with another huge six over the leg-side.

Suddenly that target was down to 16 runs from 12. Mahmudullah launched Zampa for six in the next over, with runs off every ball taking the target down to two from the final over. Mahmudullah duly got those runs from the first ball of the final over.

The Tallawahs were already sure of their place in the final four, but their chances of a top-two spot have taken a serious dent on a frustrating night. The Tallawahs, Trinbago Knight Riders and Guyana Amazon Warriors all have 10 points, but the Tallawahs now have only one group-stage game remaining. The Warriors and Knight Riders both have three.

The Tallawahs’ innings had been a beautifully paced Twenty20 effort, with steady acceleration throughout taking them beyond the 200 mark.

Powell was the star with his highest T20 score of 84 from 40 balls before he was bowled behind his legs by Ben Cutting in the penultimate over.

The innings had been given a fast start by Glenn Phillips, who made 40 from 29 balls, while Powell was ably supported by David Miller’s 32 from 20 in a partnership of 79 in seven overs.

Colin de Grandhomme and Steven Taylor then took the total beyond 200 in the final over, but when the rain, the calculators and the Patriots batsmen had done their bit, it was not enough.

Fabian Allen powered St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to a thrilling two-wicket victory with two balls to spare that takes them temporarily to the top of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) while inflicting a sixth straight defeat on the Barbados Tridents.

It looked like the Tridents were finally going to return to winning ways back on the road after five defeats at home when they reduced the Patriots to 92/6 in pursuit of 169 for victory, and again when Allen lost the strike in the closing overs and was left needing 17 from the final six balls.

But Allen had the answers, smashing the first two balls of Dominic Drakes’ closing over for sixes to take the target down to a far simpler five from four. The third ball bounced over the mid-wicket boundary and a scampered leg-bye finished the job. Allen ended on a sparkling unbeaten 64 from 34 as the Patriots completed a first successful 150-plus Hero CPL run-chase after seven previous failures.

The Patriots’ stay atop the table is certain to be a short one; they have now completed their 10 group games while the three teams one point below them all still have games to play against each other. Nevertheless, a winning farewell to their fans at Warner Park and a successful chase from such a difficult position will give the Patriots confidence heading into the playoffs.

They will hope to improve their death bowling, though, after allowing the Tridents to recover from 115/5 at the start of the 17th over to reach a far more competitive 168/5.

The Patriots’ pursuit of that total got off to a bad start. Mohammad Irfan, who bowled a record-breaking spell of 4-3-1-2 in the reverse fixture, was a thorn in the Patriots’ side again here with three wickets in the Power Play to put the home side on the back foot.

Evin Lewis was caught at mid-wicket after miscuing a pull, while van der Dussen had his stumps thoroughly rearranged when playing back to a full delivery. The final ball of the Power Play brought the big wicket of Chris Gayle as he picked out Drakes at mid-on.

Things got worse for the Patriots with a pair of cheap wickets in the ninth over. First Anton Devcich was bowled attempting to reverse-sweep Imran Khan before a horrible mix-up saw Ibrahim Khaleel run out as he and batting partner Mahmudullah both found themselves stranded mid-pitch.

Mahmudullah was then smartly caught at long-leg by Hashim Amla to give Imran Khan a second wicket with the target starting to look a long way off.

Allen, though, was able to find the boundary with enough regularity – hitting six fours and four sixes in all – that the required rate was always in hand until, after a 10-ball run in the 18th and 19th overs where he didn’t face a ball and two wickets fell, he was left with that daunting 17-run target from the last six balls. After the first two of them, it was all but over.

The Tridents earlier enjoyed a solid start to their innings and, thanks to Jason Holder, a stunning finish but ultimately paid the price for losing their way in between.

The Tridents made a steady 45/0 in the Power Play but lost four wickets in the next five overs.

Both openers fell lbw to spin, Dwayne Smith for 26 attempting to sweep Tabraiz Shamsi’s second ball on his return to Patriots colours, and debutant Sunny Sohal to Mahmudullah in the next over.

Hashim Amla was run out for just 3 and Shai Hope then followed caught – just about after some juggling and a fortuitous bounce off the shoulder – by a sliding Rassie van der Dussen in the deep.

The initial rebuilding work was carried out by Nicholas Pooran in an excellent 32-ball 44 that featured crisp, clean hitting and three big Hero Maximums.

But when he edged Alzarri Joseph behind with four overs to go and just 115 on the board, the Tridents looked well below par.

Enter Holder, who smashed two fours and three sixes as he blasted his way to 30 not out from just 11 balls, sharing a 21-ball 50 partnership with Roston Chase (38* from 28) to lift the Tridents to a total that pushed the Patriots all the way.

Trinbago Knight Riders were indebted to more runs from the Hero Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL) Mr Consistent Colin Munro in a thumping 67-run victory over fellow playoff qualifiers Guyana Amazon Warriors at Queen’s Park Oval.

It was an impressive win and takes the Knight Riders back to the top of the Hero CPL table with just three group-stage games remaining – two of them featuring the Knight Riders – and looking good for an all-important top-two finish.

The Warriors’ net run-rate suffered a hit that could prove costly in the final analysis, but with two games left for Rayad Emrit’s side there remains every chance that these two will meet twice in Guyana over the coming days – in the final group game on Sunday and then Playoff 1 on Tuesday with a place in the final at stake.

Munro’s 90 underpinned a total of 170/7 which represented a slightly disappointing end result from a position of 136/1 but was more than enough to take down the Warriors, who slumped to 42/5 inside seven overs and never recovered.

Ali Khan, one of the real finds of this Hero CPL season, continued his happy knack of taking wickets in the Power Play as he took out two of the Warriors’ dangermen. Luke Ronchi was trapped lbw first ball, before Shimron Hetmyer holed out to that man Munro on the square-leg fence for just 11.

In between those two strikes, Khary Pierre bowled Chadwick Walton for four. Sunil Narine then deceived Cameron Delport into chipping back a simple return catch to leave the Warriors four down before the Power Play was done.

Pierre soon had his second wicket when Chris Green picked out Brendon McCullum at cover, before skipper Dwayne Bravo got in on the act.

He had Sohail Tanvir caught in the deep for a nine-ball duck and then Jason Mohammed, having battled his way to 27, steered a slower ball to point.

Roshon Primus launched a couple of defiant big hits in an unbeaten 36, but by now it was damage limitation time for the Warriors.

Fawad Ahmed became the fourth bowler of the innings to claim two wickets before Ali Khan returned to finish things off with his third as Imran Tahir poked a slower ball to cover.

It all just served to make Munro’s performance all the more striking after he moved to the top of the order from number three and continued to churn out big runs.

He became the first man to go past 400 runs this season with a fifth half-century in eight matches, and now leads Kieron Pollard by over 100 runs at the top of the run-scoring chart.

With Narine struggling for runs, the Knight Riders rejigged their top three to good effect despite Chris Lynn nicking Sohail Tanvir to Chadwick Walton at slip from the fifth ball of the innings.

Denesh Ramdin was promoted to Munro’s old spot at three, and the pair shared a match-defining century stand for the second wicket. Its significance was magnified by what would follow, their 135-run stand followed by a clatter of 16 wickets for just another 136 runs.

Munro was very much the dominant partner, unfurling 10 fours and launching four Hero Maximums during a high-class 56-ball knock against a quality bowling attack.

But when Ramdin and Munro fell within four balls of each other in the 16th and 17th overs, the powerful Knight Riders middle-order failed to take full advantage of such a great platform. McCullum, Darren Bravo, Searles and Narine – coming in to face the final delivery rather than the first – all fell cheaply in the chase for quick runs. Dwayne Bravo did continue his fine hitting form with 12 not out from six balls, but 170/7 still represented a disappointing final total from 136/1.

It was Warriors debutant Romario Shepherd who did most of the damage, picking up an international-class trio of wickets as Munro, McCullum and Darren Bravo all fell to the slingy young quick.

Tanvir too ended up with three wickets after his double-strike in the final over, but it was soon clear Munro and Ramdin had already done more than enough.

All-round star Rovman Powell contributed runs, wickets and catches as Jamaica Tallawahs kept their hopes of a top-two Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) finish alive with a convincing eight-wicket victory over rivals Guyana Amazon Warriors at Providence Stadium.

Powell held three catches – including a flying one-handed stunner right on the boundary edge to remove Cameron Delport – in Guyana’s innings, plus two wickets in a nerveless final over before making 55* from 34 in an unbeaten century stand with Ross Taylor (60* from 41) to make easy work of a tricky-looking run-chase.

It’s a significant win. The Tallawahs and Warriors are competing for a Playoff 1 spot against Trinbago Knight Riders, and it’s Jamaica who now have the advantage after completing their group-stage programme with an impressive victory.

The Warriors, though, do have another chance to secure the safety net of a top-two finish when they meet the Knight Riders in the final game of the round-robin on Sunday.

The Tallawahs were always on track in their pursuit of a challenging 174 that set a new Hero CPL record for successful chases on this ground, with the boundaries coming frequently enough and the wickets infrequently enough to prevent any real pressure being allowed to build.

Imran Tahir continued his good form as he removed both openers – both wickets accompanied by his trademark victory lap celebration – with googlies, first trapping Glenn Phillips leg-before and then knocking back Johnson Charles’ leg stump.

Both had started well, with Phillips racing to 27 with two sixes that took him top of the Hero Maximum Race while Charles had also cleared the ropes twice.

Powell and Taylor simply carried on the good work, though. Taylor was the initial aggressor and won the race to 50, but the key to their partnership was its level-headed consistency.

The required rate was never allowed to climb with both men always able to find the boundary when it was needed. Taylor hit five fours and three sixes, while Powell added six fours and two sixes as new Warriors captain Chris Green shuffled his bowling options in an unsuccessful search for an option that could stem the flow. Fittingly, Powell was the man to hit the winning runs to end a superb all-round performance.

The Warriors had earlier accelerated nicely through their innings to turn a halfway 72/2 into a meatier 173/6, Jason Mohammed leading the way with a high-class 54 from 33 featuring five fours and three sixes. It was an innings so well-crafted it was hard to believe this was Mohammed’s first 50 in T20 cricket after 16 attempts.

Shimron Hetmyer started carefully against spin but soon found his range and looked about to unleash some real carnage when he holed out to deep mid-wicket for 48 from 41 to end a fine partnership with Mohammed that brought 61 runs and set the platform for late fireworks.

Chadwick Walton finished things off with 25 from 16 before being run out by Tallawahs keeper Glenn Phillips in a final over that brought Powell the wickets of Mohammed and Roshon Primus.

The Tallawahs had shrewdly decided that pace off the ball was the way to go, with nine of the first 10 overs sent down by spinners. Samuel Badree bowled his full allocation inside the first half of the innings to return tidy figures of 1/23 as the Warriors initially struggled to get going.

The first wicket, though, came in the solitary over of pace in the first half of the innings as Luke Ronchi’s mishit drive off Oshane Thomas failed to clear Powell at mid-off.

Powell then sent Delport packing, as an eye-catching innings of 34 from 23 ended thanks to a moment of real brilliance from the Tallawahs all-rounder. Delport appeared to have secured his second Hero Maximum of the night when he clubbed Badree down the ground, only for a flying Powell to pluck the ball out of the sky one-handed just inside the rope.

That brought Hetmyer and Mohammed together to shape the innings with their third-wicket stand, but it wouldn’t be enough.

The Warriors must now beat the Knight Riders and overturn a net run-rate deficit to knock the Tallawahs out of the top two.

Guyana Amazon Warriors booked their place in the 2018 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) final after edging past Trinbago Knight Riders by two wickets on a thrillingly tense night in Providence.

Rain throughout much of the day resulted in difficult batting conditions throughout this Playoff clash, in stark contrast to a couple of nights ago when the Warriors blitzed the same opponents with a quick-fire run-chase in the final group-stage game.

But the Warriors’ heroes from that night, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford, combined again to rescue Guyana’s chase of the Knight Riders’ 122/7 from the depths of 52/5 after 12 overs.

Having got the target down to 21 from 20 balls both men then fell in successive balls to leave the game back in the balance, and when Rayad Emrit edged Dwayne Bravo to Denesh Ramdin for just a single the momentum appeared to have lurched decisively the way of the Knight Riders once more with 18 runs still needed from 13 balls and just two wickets remaining.

Romario Shepherd had other ideas, though, launching his first ball for a huge six down the ground and adding another boundary in the next over to leave the Warriors needing just four runs from the final over.

Still this extraordinary game was not quite done. Just one run came from the first four balls of Dwayne Bravo’s final over to leave the equation standing at three runs needed from two balls.

Sohail Tanvir then brought the curtain down on a memorable night’s cricket with a thumping strike down the ground for six to spark scenes of jubilation at a charged Providence Stadium.

Having seen eight overs of spin from Chris Green and Imran Tahir produce combined figures of 3/30 on a pitch offering prodigious turn, Knight Riders skipper Dwayne Bravo gambled on front-loading the run-chase with his own deadly trio of spinners.

After Ali Khan’s opening over, the next 12 overs of the Warriors innings were bowled by Sunil Narine, Fawad Ahmed and Khary Pierre. All three were magnificent, leaving the Warriors firmly on the back foot at 55/5 and needing 68 from the last seven overs.

But the moment pace came back on the ball, Hetmyer and Rutherford teed off. Thirty-four runs came from the next three overs and the target was suddenly a more manageable 34 from 24.

Another 13 came from the first four balls of Kevon Cooper’s following over but Colin Ingram’s direct hit then ran out Hetmyer by the width of a popping-crease line before Rutherford holed out to long-off from the very next ball.

The Warriors tail, though, was able to complete a job that had looked impossible when the Knight Riders’ spin trio were casting their spells.

They were even taking catches for each other and completing run outs. Fawad struck first, Cameron Delport caught on the midwicket fence by Pierre, before Luke Ronchi’s top-edged sweep found Narine.

Jason Mohammed was trapped lbw by a sharp-turning off-break from Narine, who gave up just nine runs in his four overs. Pierre then ran out Chadwick Walton for 13 after smart fielding off his own bowling before having Green – who earlier bowled so beautifully himself with the new ball to claim 2/8 from his four overs – caught by Dwayne Bravo at slip for a second-ball duck.

It had been a similar story with the bat for the Knight Riders top order, on the back foot almost from the word go after being asked to bat first and slumping to 26/4 inside the Power Play.

Having called correctly at the toss, Green had both Colin Munro and Sunil Narine caught in the cover ring after being deceived by a lack of pace from both bowler and pitch. The Aussie off-spinner bowled his four overs off the reel with the new ball with remarkable control and skill to exploit the helpful conditions.

The man who would later so memorably finish the game, Sohail Tanvir, had landed its first blow by winning an lbw decision against Brendon McCullum in the first over, while Imran Tahir was off and running for the boundary in celebration after Ramdin misread the length and was trapped plumb in front trying to sweep a very full delivery.

Ramdin was the only member of that stellar Knight Riders top four to reach double figures by virtue of three successive boundaries off Tanvir, the first two of which were pure cricket shots and the third a genuine edge placed perfectly between keeper Ronchi and Walton at a wide first slip.

Darren Bravo and Ingram attempted to rebuild, but it was careful, painstaking work as two of the biggest hitters in T20 cricket put on 48 in nine overs with just four boundaries between them. Straight after hitting the fourth of those – his third – straight back down the ground, Darren Bravo edged Tanvir to Ronchi for 24 off 33.

Ingram did manage to squirt another boundary down to third-man off the toe of the bat, but perished soon after for 25 from 26 after smacking an Emrit full-toss straight to Shepherd at long-off.

Cooper was the one Knight Rider to make batting look easy, stroking his first ball through cover for four and hitting the first Hero Maximum of the innings in the penultimate over.

Dwayne Bravo added another in the final over before falling to the final ball of the innings. He and his side must now regroup for their second shot at a place in the Final when they take on either Jamaica Tallawahs or St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in Friday’s Semi-final.
 
Sohail Tanvir finished with 3.3-0.25-0 as his team Guyana Amazon Warriors lost to Trinbago Knight Riders by 8 wickets in the CPL 2018 finals today at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad.
