A Pakistani singer has been praised after stopping his concert mid-song to rescue a girl from the audience who was being harassed.

A video of Atif Aslam interrupting his live performance in Karachi on Saturday has been shared thousands of times.

The popular singer told the alleged harassers: "Have you ever seen a girl? She could be your mother or a sister."

Pakistani media said the venue was overcrowded and that several girls reported being harassed.

Aslam, who is also a film actor, called security after seeing the attack. A video posted on Twitter shows the guards pulling the girl by the arms from the crowd and taking her to the stage.

The audience applauded the singer, chanting "Atif, Atif". Some social media users said he only resumed his performance after making sure the girls in the audience were safe.

It was not the first time that a singer has interrupted a concert to stop harassment in the audience. Last year, Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz confronted a man who was allegedly attacking a woman during a performance in Rosario, Mexico.

Any decent man would have stepped in to intervene. Atif just did what he should have, sad thing is that no other man in the audience attended to the distressed lady.

Good on him.

Unfortunately women in our part of the world are easy targets for harassment.

Good job by Atif. I've been to numerous concerts in Pakistan and I've seen things I can't repeat here. Entire groups of boys arrive at these events for the sole purpose of harassing girls. They always pick on the ones whose male companions they outnumber.

As an update to this story. The person who was claimed to be the "harasser" says that he was part of the security delegate for the concert and those girls and their friend tried to cross into the VIP section without VIP passes and when he tried stopping them - they started to physically attack him and shout at him before Atif intervened assuming those girls were being harassed.

His security credentials have been verified as being authentic.

Don't know what to make of it now. If he's telling the truth then I feel really bad for him but he could be lying

It is not uncommon for females to use their gender to exploit the situation, given how they have been oppressed throughout history it is a bit more challenging for the instances where the male is not at fault to prove his innocence although you can say that from the females perspective to.

If it had been my daughter or sister at Atif's concert I wouldn't be happy with the excessive use of force by security guards
These girls are probably struggling at school to get good marks and have to put up with idiot bouncers at the weekend

But why would they be struggling to get good marks in school? You are assuming they are jaahil - which I doubt.

Everyone struggles to get good marks at school, it's why you get graded for effort
But we're arguing about the semantics here
The point is the girls were only looking to put their hair down and had to put up with over zealous security

Okay I guess.

But if you are struggling at school - you should be at home studying rather than attending concerts.

Regardless - if this story is true - these girls should be taught not to step over the line when rules are in place.

I read yesterday that the guy who got beaten up was actual victim he was appointed as security volunteer by the university and he tried to stop those 2 girls and 1 guy before things turn violent and the moment Atif interfered everyone took girl as the victim and a mob of people actually beat that guy a lot.
