Pakistan slump to massive seven-wicket defeat to West Indies in the 2nd match of the 2019 World Cup

Today's loss was not an accident. Hope everyone understands that. This pitch had extra bounce. Even Amir who is rarely known for extracting bounce, was getting good bounce. Batsmen were caught off guard as Amir's balls repeatedly hit the splice of the bat rather than the middle. Only difference is WI has a method to handle bouncers. Pakistan had none. They couldn't duck or weave. They just got into awkward position and attempted a weak pull.

that england series is proving to be expensive for us..

my anger has turned to something else now which should worry the pakistani cricket establishment. If they keep performing like this people will just switch off..

Come on tgk. With all banters aside, this is just 1 match. It's a long tournament.

Anything can happen. Why lose the hope?

True. FOr one thing England never explored the opportunity of using short ball. If i recall even on a docile pitch like UAE Fakhar top edged couple of pull and got out. Second of all they had no one to execute perfectly. This is Trent BRidge. One of the highest run scoring ground in recent times. This scenario may well repeat in matches against teams like Australia, NZ, SA in right conditions

my friend you have to have hope to lose..if they had fought and lost I would have been more upbeat..but this was abject surrender..i mean watching players like Haris just makes me angry now..

i'm sorry but I dont really have 20 years to wait to see these guys do something again..

Big congratlations to WI. WI played fantastic! Remember that WI did not even play there best 2 pace bowlers - gabriel and roach! Like i said in previous threads, WI can beat anyone on their day!
Now to pak. What can i say, we are officially minnows now! Cant even duck under bouncers. So chicken hearted, have to use their bats to fend off short pitch deliveries. Babar has no fight in him, when going gets tough he quits. Imam and safaraz are not international standard and i wish we could kick both out of the team today , ,not possible i know. Haris is useless. Hafeez and malik are too old to being playing int cricket and were never any good anyway. Hasan is a county division 2 bowler. Imad has been found out with short pitch bowling. Shadab is a mediocre player.
Basically,.only amir can hold his head high, he played well.

Anyway, foget it i cant be bothered to carry on!

"Pakistan, on the other hand, have had a shocker. But this is no reason to rule them out. They've come back from worse. They came back from a 10-wicket loss to West Indies in 1992 to win the whole thing."
Cricbuzz has some consolation words for Pakistan, not a bad one.

what you didnt get the memo? he's the saviour of Pakistan cricket..

I shall rename him Haris Marshmallow from now on..soft pudgy but the cover drive is appetising.
Haaa Haaa haaa then leave Haris sohail. ....but I think hasan Ali is off colour for more than 2 years now...so it should be shinwari in place of hasan Ali in pak wc squad

to be fair in the match where they played wood and archer they tried some short pitched stuff but imam dealt with it..we lost him early today and then well babar made a stupid error of judgment, haris was his useless soft self and the rest werent good enough..

if fakhar and imam get out early we dont seem to have the resiliance to last long..i mean hafeez was unlucky so was sarfi..but cmon..

Hassan ali out m husnian in
Hafeez out asif ali in
Haris still in bec captain does not want to bat at 4

World 2019 pak out

I didn’t waste my time watching a single delivery bowled in this match. I will not watch any Pakistan game, that was my plan because this team is extremely mediocre and boring to watch. Interested in high competition matches among India, England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, WI, and Bangladesh.

It’s a waste of time watching minnows like Pakistan, SL, and Afghanistan.

Not sure what to say at this point. 10+ ODI loss in a row. This is not good for Pakistan cricket. This loss against Windies will definitely hurt in the RR department

who got the wickets from our side? i went to jummah so missed the rest of the match lol..and I dont want to see the scorecard ever again..

Pak batsmen struggled to face short deliveries against south africa and they have still not improved.....???????

Astonished to hear that PAK have failed to win any of their last twelve ODIs.

Astonished to hear that PAK have failed to win any of their last twelve ODIs.

Pakistan thought their players were getting "burnt out" and rested 6 players against AUssies and lost all the matches. Loss to England is not a surprise as many teams can't beat them anyway.

Looks like Misba is not happy with AMir lol Cricinfo front page interview shows him criticizing Amir for his lack of speed

Amir proved that who is international standard with a big match / tournament temperament. A class apart from the rest.

6-26-3 with his other two going at 10RPO lol. Cannon fodder Wahab has been sent to make sure every single team score 350+

It was like turning back time in Nottingham on Friday at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, as the modern-day West Indies evoked memories of their fearsome four-pronged pace attack of the 1980s by skittling out Pakistan for just 105 in only 21.4 overs.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side had little to offer with the bat as Oshane Thomas, Jason Holder, Andre Russell, Sheldon Cottrell and Carlos Brathwaite performed a more than passable impersonation of yesteryear greats Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall and Colin Croft.

Perhaps captain Holder offered a clue as to what he had in store for the beleaguered Pakistanis when he said after winning the toss and electing to bowl first, “Everybody is playing with a smile on their face and that’s how we play our best cricket”.

Well, his team quickly turned into the smiling assassins as they charged around the outfield, high-fiving in wild celebration at the quickfire clatter of wickets.

Fakhar Zaman provided some early fireworks for Pakistan by clipping Holder for six over square leg and smashing Cottrell for four over extra cover.

But the Pakistan collapse began when Fakhar hooked a short ball from Russell and could only look on in agony as the ball dropped slowly to the turf and dribbled into his stumps.

The West Indian paceman broke the hearts of the opposition when he removed Haris Sohail with another bouncer and Russell almost reached the long-leg fielder as he galloped round the ground punching the air with joy.

Holder, surprisingly, decided to take Russell out of the attack after he claimed two wickets for four runs in a hostile three-over spell during which he delivered 16 straight short-pitched balls.

Not to be outdone by the quickies, wicketkeeper Shai Hope then produced a catch to rival England all-rounder Ben Stokes’s spectacular opening-day effort when he went flying to his right to pouch a thick edge by Babar Ali off Thomas.

Mohammad Hafeez provided brief hope for Sarfaraz’s side when he struck Thomas for two straight fours, but the captain gloved a short-ball from Holder to Hope down the leg side. It was originally given not out but the decision was overturned when television replays showed the ball had flicked the skipper’s glove on the way through.

Holder followed up with a second wicket in the same over before Shadab Khan gave a clue as to what sort of resistance he might offer when he dropped his bat on the way out to the middle.

Sure enough, the Pakistan tail-ender was out first ball before Holder made it three wickets in nine deliveries when Hassan Ali lobbed the ball up to mid-on for Cottrell to take the easiest of catches, the fielder celebrating with a trademark military-style salute.

Cottrell got in on the act again when, after the umpteenth short-pitched ball of the innings, he dived full length to take another catch inches off the ground to remove Hafeez.

Wahab Riaz, batting at No. 10, offered fleeting resistance by smashing Holder for two sixes and a four in the same over but Pakistan’s misery was complete when he backed away from the stumps once too often and was clean bowled by Thomas.

After finishing with figures of 4-27 in 5.4 overs, a jubilant Thomas said: “This is a new experience for me, it being my first World Cup. I was confident of running in and doing my job.

“Andre started the job for us, I just followed in his footsteps today. A lot of guys tried to mix it up with short balls. We wanted to execute our plans well."

For all of us hating the Akmals (myself included), looks like they are the only ones that can play the short ball. We could have tried Asif Ali in place of Haris Sohail (he did show us that he can handle the short ball in the PSL, oulling 4 sixes in the final against Wahab and Hassan Ali)

Fakhar - unlucky was a good bouncer
Imam - Pathetic he looked uncertain, when you play like that u won't put away poor deleiveries rather get out
Babar - Blaming media and social media for this one, all these questions for his low strike rate...must have played on his mind chasing wide deliveries, this is when u hope he played the 100 off 120 balls knock.
Sarfraz - Don't rate him anways and a very poor captain
Hafeez - Does not look fit, looks like hes trying to protect that injured hand while its in fielding or the way he bats, he used to pull well and today it was clear he tried to avoid the short balls and at the end played a nothing defensive stroke
Imad - Overhyped no reason, this was going to happen gets out to the short ball every innings hasnt worked on anything
Shadab - in the side for his bowling, batting is only an added benefit, cant blame him
Hassan - Disastrous game bowling 125 slower balls when windies were bolwing 145kph+, won't go too far , ina situation where u need a desperate partnership he tries to slog needs a benching for 2 games to be brought down to earth, loosing his bolwing, effort and mentality with the approach of the game
Wahab - Needs to bowl tighter line in his first spell, dont become too rpedictable
Amir - Dont read too much into the 3 wickets, still needs to swing it and bring his pace up by 8-10kph

Changes
Asif in for Haris
Malik in for Imad
Shaheen in for Hassan

Pakistan V England game will most likely be washed out. Pakistan was expected to lose that game anyway. So today's loss will be half-redeemed. Pakistan will bounce back by beating Sri Lanka comprehensively. If game against Australia is also washed out, then Pakistan is a sure shot semi-finalist.

One of the reasons I have always been hesitant to ditch the Akmal clan. All of them, including current rep Babar play short bowling better than the rest.

Lone positives from this game is that we will see some changes to the batting order/selection and also found out who is ready from the quicks.

Amir is ready for the stage. Hasan and Wahab, looked not so much.
Probably should try Afridi next one.

Batting wise need to switch Hafeez with Malik, and find room for Ali.

When losing has become a habit, who exactly is shocked that we lost today?

Yes I was expecting a defeat, but thought we would score about 260 and then lose comfortably. Must admit getting rolled over for 105 did still come as something of a shock.

When will people realize it has nothing to do with replacing X player with Y? You could have played anyone from the 15 in the squad and result would be the same. Why are you looking forward to changes then?

Not really. Amir Sohail, Jahid Fazal, Injamam, Wasim Haider, that old leggi perhaps named Sikandar all were new inclusion or just had 3 to 4 matches experience. Aaqib and Mustaq had only 2 years or less of experience. Waqar, their main weapon and strike bowler couldn't even participate in that WC due to injury. Actually it was their mindset to fight and believe in oneself along with dynamic leadership of Imran that made it happen. This team is not that bad as it is performing on the field. It hasn't got that x factor in them. In today's match, when 4 quick wickets fell down they should have tried to occupy the crease , concentrate hard and play out 50 overs and give the bowlers a total to fight. Instead they all surrendered cowerdly. Perhaps it is the reflection of not occuring any international matches on their soil.

When losing has become a habit, who exactly is shocked that we lost today?

No one thought that they would be bowled out for 105. It was very disappointing after they got the chance to play 5 ODIs just before WC. They had the best practice of all the teams.

Current Pak team is inconsistent in every aspect of the game. More shocks likely in store..

Still early days but Australia, England and India will most likely reach the semis. 4th team could be Windies or NZ.

Deep anylasis of todays batting

Ok lets start with fakhar:Goodish start but was unlucky.
Imam: out because of his limited technique
Babar :poor shot
Haris:poor shot but he wanted to get on with it and rusell previous ball was 130ish and suprised haris with 148 kph extra pace and bounce
Sarfraz:little unlucky
Hafeez;poor shot didn't expect this from hafeez he just poked at the bouncer without looking at it.
Imad:once again poking at bouncer no real intent
Shadab:good ball to get rid of himl came in fast swung away to suprise shadab
All and all a day to forget for pakistan

@QalanderFan we'll quietly move on from this one :))

I watch every Caribbean home season as I retain a soft spot for them and yes their bilateral series results are mediocre.

However they rarely have their T20 stars playing for them. When you combine the likes of Gayle and Russell with the young batch of exciting talent like Thomas, Hope and Hetmyer - you realise this Windies team are highly dangerous and can make any team look silly on their day.

Man for man, West Indies have a more talented team than Pakistan and a higher ceiling. Their bowling attack on fast pitches can bounce any team out - look how they beat England earlier this year !

Batting wise need to switch Hafeez with Malik,.

We will spend the entire tournament switching between these to fundamentally mediocre cricketers, and the best we will get is a couple of 50's that will have no bearing on the game they played.

I'll just say this. Pakistan isn't the top team in the world nor are they the worst. They're a mediocre team but that display of batting looked like a team that let the occasion get to them. They're not this bad and I'd say they'd improve a lot in the upcoming games.

We have seen the short ball been used effectively in this world cup. There has been an element of bodyline, where the bowler has been aiming for the batsman. Watching pakistans bowlers. their bouncers were terrible compared to those viscious one deliveredby the Windies bowlers, this is a side point.

i see a Pakistan team that has no direction, no clear strategy no clear game plan. Batsmen don't know their roles. Every batter was just trying to slog. Babar did not have a clue today surely his role is to hold up one side and be the anchor and bat long, but he was in a hurry to get out. The bowlers have no clue what to bowl their execution is poor. there simply seems to be no game plan, no strategy and no preplanning and preparation in how to bat to certain opposition bowlers and how to bowl to certain batsman. The Pak bowlers bouncers were pathetic and they were simply handing out gifts to allow the ball to be hit out the park.

These failures point to severe incompetence of the coaches and managers.Mickey Arthur and co are just well paid spectators a good job if you can get it.

Wahab riaz maintained his economy of 10rpo...much more than the 8rpo seen by youngsters in previous matches..

Surprised that not many have mentioned the shot Babar played to get out.

I just caught a bit of the highlights and was shocked to see Babar's shot! What was he thinking? I wouldn't expect a batsman to play such a shot even in the nets!

It really made me think his heart was even in this game.

Exactly. Babar's game has stagnated for last year or so. I think he is content with simply being the best batsman in the team. He does not show any intend to improve.

If you look at the CWC15 highlights as well when pak played wi, misbah got out playing the same shot when pak were 25/4. Maybe it's just the pressure.

So teams are targetting 300-400 in each ODI our team score 105....I feel sorry for people who went out to watch the match, not even a small glimmer of a fight....shameful.

His feet were stuck together because he was expecting a short ball into his body like all previous deliveries, he got a short ball he could hit finally but his footwork was not there

No they Tried Short Ball Pretty much whole series
Pitch Had Extra Bounce
There is Difference between Short ball and bouncer.
Batsman were not expecting the ball to bounce that much .
in 2nd odi They bowled Fakhar
Short balls Pretty much every Over fakhar handled it well .
It was unfortunate . Amir was brilliant
Hassan bowled really well and induced 5 edges of Gayles Bat Its just none of the edge Turned into Catch.

Pressure. game pressure . Wickets were falling even Sarfraz wasn't Hitting boundaries and Was playing some dots.
Score board was not moving.
He Tried to Attack Windies bowler To out them under pressure Unfortunately In doing so He got out It simple as that.

Looking back at this match i wish we had scored some more runs because the NRR is going to haunt us. NZ is all set to lose both their matches and we will have a tie with them at 11 points if we beat Bangladesh. England will probably beat this NZ team and they stand a chance against india to achieve 12 points

NRR will cost us more than likely. If we got to 150 and at least made WI face 30 overs , we wouldn't have been this bad in terms of NRR .

Also today was a chance to improve NRR.

Like i said before this defeat is going to haunt us for a long time if NRR comes into play!

Like i said before this defeat is going to haunt us for a long time if NRR comes into play!

NRR shouldn't even be coming into play as we should have beat Aus. I regret that more than losing to WI

Aint the NZ.NRR..will be dented of Eng.beats them and Pakistan tp a get a boost should they beat Bdesg

Guess we will be going out on NRR that will be a sad exit
Losing to WI inside 13 overs was always going to be tough to catch up with. Which is why they should have tried their best to win game against Aus. 140 run a ball with wickets in hand should have been chased. That was pathetic collapse and our captain didn't even bother taking lead role when we needed 40 odd at last wicket.

Only ourselves to blame. No excuses for being bowled out for 105 in 20 overs. Had we tried to battle it out and play the full 50 overs and still took a loss, our NRR wouldn't have been so bad, alas.
