Pakistan & Sri Lanka share one point after their World Cup match is abandoned due to wet outfield

Carrying a win each in their kitty after recovering from thumping losses in their respective opening games, Pakistan and Sri Lanka face each other in the 11th Match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, on Friday, 7 June.

Overview

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka
Bristol County Ground
2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 10
Friday, 7 June; 10:30 am local time, 9:30 am GMT

Despite a stunning batting collapse (from 92-0 to 201 all out), Sri Lanka managed to stave off the Afghanistan challenge in their previous fixture. The win would have served as a confidence booster after a 10-wicket rout to New Zealand in their opening game.

Dimuth Karunaratne’s side will be wary of their batting fragility; against Afghanistan, the middle-order lost four wickets for just five runs, before being bailed out by the bowlers. They run into a resurgent Pakistan side, fresh from a 14-run victory over hosts England, a win that was termed by Player of the Match Mohammad Hafeez as a ‘total team effort’.

After folding for 105 against West Indies, Pakistan’s batting unit came back strong to post 348 against England. Led by Wahab Riaz, the bowlers combined to stifle the hosts, ending a 11-match losing streak.

Key players
Babar Azam (Pakistan): Pakistan’s resolute No.3 batsman boasts a healthy ODI record against Sri Lanka, averaging 58.33, with two centuries in eight games. A fifty against England meant that Azam’s last four ODI scores read 115, 80, 22 and 63.

Kusal Perera (Sri Lanka): With the middle-order still experiencing patchy form, the onus will be on Perera to provide another strong start. Against Afghanistan, Perera looked at ease, cutting and pulling in his trademark style, as he shared a 92-run opening stand with Dimuth Karunaratne.

Conditions
The forecast for Bristol is mostly cloudy, with intermittent showers expected throughout Friday. Including West Indies' 421 in the warm-up game, the ground has witnessed three 350+ scores inside the last one month.

Squads

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

Sri Lanka: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Avishka Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera (wk), Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhananjaya de Silva, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Isuru Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay

How is the weather in Bristol? Does it still look like the match is going to be a washout?

• Pakistan have won their last six ODIs against Sri Lanka, the first encounter in that span
was at another ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 venue (Cardiff Wales Stadium,
June 2017).

• Pakistan have won all seven of their previous ICC Cricket World Cup meetings with Sri
Lanka, including three matches in England and Wales despite losing the toss on each
of those occasions (once in 1975, twice in 1983).

• Sri Lanka have won two of their last three ODIs in 2019, after losing their previous eight
such fixtures to start the calendar year.

• Sri Lanka won their most recent ODI in England and Wales (v Afghanistan); they
haven’t strung together back-to-back wins there since May-June 2014 (W1, L6, T1
since then).

• Pakistan won their most recent ODI against England by 14 runs, after losing their
previous 11 completed ODIs.

• Pakistan have won five of their last six ODIs (L1) in the first stage of the ICC Cricket
World Cup, their only loss in that time their tournament opener in this year’s edition
against West Indies.

• Wahab Riaz’s (Pakistan) 3/82 against England in his last ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup
outing was his best figures in ODIs played in England and Wales (nine played),
coming after going wicket-less in his previous three such fixtures.

• Nuwan Pradeep (Sri Lanka) claimed bowling figures of 4/31 off nine overs in the side’s
most recent ODI against Afghanistan; his career-best figures in the format.

• Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) figured in an ODI victory for his country for the first time
since July 2017; his side losing 21 times in a row beforehand when the pacer had
featured for the Lions.

• Lasith Malinga’s 3/39 last time out against Afghanistan for Sri Lanka meant that the
veteran has now moved inside the all-time top five list for most ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup wickets (46).

This will be a walk in the park for Pakistan. Probably will win by 8 wickets or by 100 + runs.

Can some one at Bristol confirm if it has been raining overnight and what's the weather

It was sunny for a while but now rain has just started. Let's see how it ends. It is supposed to rain for next few hours.

Dark clouds already. Seems like it is only going to get worse.

This is a bit OTT. Sri Lanka known they're minnow level. They'll be pretty pleased actually.
Pakistan is also a minnow. They lost like something 11 matches consistently before winning last match.
Sri Lanka would also consider themselves unlucky. They lost east points. Any team could have won between the two

I dont know why we are making Srilanka out to be a totally hopeless team. They have Kusal perera who is really good, Thisara Perera who has a hatrick against Pakistan, Angelo Matthews who has a Bradmanesque record against Pakistan, Malinga who has troubled Pakistan in the past, Nuwan pradeed who looks quite threatening, Thirimanne who scored a century against Pakistan in the Asia cup final. They are NOT a hopeless bunch when you compare them to Pakistan team. They might be nothing compared to England or India but we are comparing them to Pakistan here.

Well Sri Lanka probably thinking the same!

Salam brother, Srilanka were lucky to win the match against Afghanistan, it seems like luck is with the Lankans. Pakistan are in beast mood, Srilanka has never won against Pakistan in ICC WC, how lucky Srilanka is  We need a washout against England :shakib

What I've seen from footage the darkest clouds were there when team was practicing. It seems it will get worse. Don't know if it is raining atm but it looks like a complete wash out.

And would've ICC known if there will be chance of wash out today when they were arranging the schedule?

When did I say they're hopeless???
So you truly think they'll feel sad that they 'missed' out on two points???
Obviously not.

On a side note: Pakistan have played Sri Lanka 7 times in WC and have beaten them all times :hafeez

How can you predict the weather 3 years in advance?

Hopefully we get some play. D/L will play a huge part today. Should bowl first.

It wasn't directed at you in particular. But the general vibe here is that Srilankans are like a walkover or an easy 2 points for Pakistan. Its not that simple.

Nope.

SL fans are really annoyed about the weather for todays match and are saying how lucky we are

We would have targeted two points today..
No matter what one says about our recent form, realistically this would have been one of the games where two points were realistic...

So one point definitely feels like a point lost.

Any update on the weather? I've currently got tickets but live around 3 hours away from the ground and not sure whether I should leave

We over estimating pakistan and under estimating Sri Lanka wait for match to finished and than give your verdict.

It's going to be a washout. Just spoke to my friend who flew over to England just for the WC. He's got a ticket for this game and he hasn't even gotten out of bed. He's saying it looks like there wont be more tha 10 overs of play. Mach sure to be abandoned.

Don't think Pakistan batters would survive against Lakmal, Pradeep, Matthews on a seaming track. Same goes for SL against Amir and Hasan. Both teams should be happy with 1 point.

Rain seems like the only winner today that is sad wanted to see some cricket.

Heavy rain is predicted till 12noon-1pm, after that if we are lucky we might get sometihgn

I think Pak is taking SL too lightly here with all this talk of “2 easy points”. My guess/hope is they get surprised

I will be very happy with today's 1 valuable point. On Monday I get the feeling that South Africa will beat West Indies. That will put us ahead of West Indies and South Africa on Points table.

I personally do not want this match to happen, deep down i know on cloudy conditions against 4 sri lankan fast bowlers we may not score 200. 1 point will do good to the team. Even in 2017 ICC Champions trophy match v sri lanka they gave tough time to pak on flat wicket.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | 11th Match, World Cup | Bristol | June 7, 2019 | Match Thread

My message for the Pakistan team will always be the same: don´t get over ambitious. Just bat 30 to 35 overs without losing too many wickets, and then from thereon assess as to what sort of a target they can set. Any other kind of thinking or planning from this team could result in a collapse for below 200!

Also, even if they bat second, the strategy should still somewhat be the same. Remember always, even if you´re set 350 to win, no team can hurry up things and get there in 20 overs. You still have to bat out the 50 overs, you still will have to respect good bowling and you still will be required to compromise with the match situation and bat quietly for a phase of may 10 overs. So, in short, apply brains whilst batting - please!

You didn't mention the strategy against rain.

Maybe checl the team PAK played in those games? We played the likes of Abid, Rizwan, Shaheen, Hasnain etc.

With Amir,Wahab, Shadab and Hasan the bowling looks much better and even if this game is a washout PAK will still reach the 4th place.

Well, just pray to Allah I suppose? :D

As someone who has tickets and is 30 mins from the ground at a hotel this is so frustrating.

There was literally no rain yesterday and tomorrow is now supposed to be clear as well so Literally 9am to 3-4pm today to prefectly overlap with match time. Cruel Joke this is.

Is it raining now?

Is it raining now?

Yep!

It was supposed to rain yesterday from 7pm onwards and it was dry most of the night. Even this morning was fine, till about 9am. Now its coming down. 2-3 more hours of this and its over. Like I said extremely cruel timing.

How unfortunate that out of the 3 days of predicted rain it will only actually rain during game time.

This is bad news for Pakistan, it was an easy 2 points

What nonsense. Are we suddenly going to pretend Pakistan are a consistent side after one good win?

There's every chance Pakistan will play horribly as they did in their humiliation against the West Indies, against SL, just as there's a chance they'll play well as they did against England.

The only thing predictable about Pakistan is their unpredictability, so please don't even try pretending this is a foregone conclusion.

Exactly, some arrogant posters making out Pakistan would have easily taken the 2 points.

Funnily enough, many are the exact same posters who predicted they wouldn't even win a game in the WC after the lose to the West Indies.

Why is there never any middle ground? They're either the best team in the world (following a win) or the worst team in the world (following a loss) as far as some of their supporters are concerned.

It’s a rainy, damp day. Doesn’t looks like the match will be going to go ahead today. I live near Bristol.

We're a pretty poor team despite that win against Eng HOWEVER this current Sri Lankan bunch is worse than us, they completely lack basics and Pakistan team at its worst would beat this Lankan team 10/10. These are easy 2 points which we so desperately need. I hope we get a 20 over game to get us a result.

If they game doesn’t go ahead and finishes then Pakistan will sure miss out on 1 point. Sri Lanka is a weak side, Pak should hammer them and boost the NRR!

In overcast conditions pak won't be hammering anyone. We have lost 11 games on the bounce ***

The conditions are tailer made for srilankan bowlers

Well not hammer.

Probably would have been a laborious win but a win nonetheless.

Don't bother with this one, make your plans for the weekend instead.

Pakistan can still qualify to the SFs. Gotta beat one of Aus/NZ/Ind, and Ban, Afg and SA. Won't 11 points will be enough ?

Boys . Don't worry about this game. 4 wins from last 6 is needed.
2 from next 4 against big boys, and then last 2 need to be wins Vs afg and bang
That will see us through. I've worked it all out. Will share later

As long as it doesn't rain for Afg/BD matches. For now, have faith in English weather to rain out Pak-Afg/Pak-BD as well.

This game getting washed out makes things so much more difficult for us, especially if NZ and WI games this weekend don't get washed out.

Dont get why they dont abandon the match now and let everyone go home instead of making crowd wait for 3 hours.

For gods sake it will be a washout. When we beat the likes of Afg and BD we have to make sure we batter them so our NRR is good

And I don’t understand why Pakistan always seem to play on Friday’s.

Dont get why they dont abandon the match now and let everyone go home instead of making crowd wait for 3 hours.

They will try every possibility to get in 20 overs so no refunds can be given . Even if only 10 overs are bowled , 50% refund can only be given .

Bristol doesn’t have state of the art drainage system either. Once the rain stops it will take hours for any game to start.

Guys trust me it will be very unlikely to have a game today.

It’s too early to say if this will have any bearing on qualifying but unlikely Pakistan can crawl back the current rr against those two teams due to the heavy defeat v WI

We should win the matches vs SA, NZ, BD, and AFG plus this one point, I think that should be enough to take us to the semis.
Keep your hopes up.

Guys trust me it will be very unlikely to have a game today.

They have spent a lot of money on the ground in recent years to save their ODI status so I’m assuming drainage was also improved. But yes when rain is persistent it takes a while to start when the rain stops . By then it maybe raining again, we’ve all seen this happen

If a team doesn't make the play-offs because of one rained match where they get 1 point, they really need to ask themselves if they deserved it.

If Pakistan are as good as some of their fans here make-out, they should still be able to win enough games to make the semis, even if they only get 1 point today. If they can't win enough games, then they probably weren't good enough.

Wow, just saw the live pictures, great whether if you're a duck! :dw

In 1992 world, Pakistan lost the first match to West Indies, won the second and third was washed off. So if there is anything called history is repeating itself, we are not going to see any match today.

Allah SWT knows best. There may be a blessing in a wash out.

There could be all 4 teams on the same points and what if Pakistan has another washout say against Afghanistan ?

England prob wasn’t the best place for this format with no reserve days .
