PCB erring on side of caution!

The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced the consortium of Tower Sports and SportzWorkz as its broadcast production partner for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, which will be held across Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi from 20 February to 22 February.

The appointment was finalized following an open and transparent tender process as per the Pakistan Procurement Rules 2004. Pursuant to a rigorous pre-qualification process, the consortium had submitted the lowest evaluated bid.

Tower Sports is a Pakistan-registered company while SportzWorkz is registered in Singapore, and, together, they bring a powerful and respected crew of production management team who have a great wealth of experience of quality cricket production.

As part of the HBL PSL production arrangement, Tower Sports and SportzWorkz will also work to train Pakistani camerapersons and technical crew. This development program is being put in place with an aim to enhance the broadcast production skills of resources available in Pakistan.

The production team is led by industry stalwarts Chris McDonald and supported by Stephen Norris.

McDonald has previously served as Senior Vice-President at ESPN Star Sports. He has also served as the CEO and was one of the founding members of Ten Sports.

Norris has over 30 years of sports media and production experience and was instrumental in the successful launch of BT Sports in the UK and Ten Sports in South Asia. He was also the Head of Production at Ten Sports and helped them become the largest cricket producer in the world, including the production of all Pakistan cricket matches from 2000 to 2006.

Other notable members of the crew include Tim Finlay, Louwrens Rensburg and Graham Rendell.

Finlay has over 30 years of live production experience including work with BPL, SLPL, BCCI and the Australian Open.

Rensburg has worked as Executive Producer for SuperSport and has worked on the Cricket World Cup as well as bilateral cricket for South Africa, England and Pakistan.

Rendell brings with him 25 years of live production experience including bilateral cricket for Pakistan and the IPL.

PSL Project Executive Shoaib Naveed said: “We are excited to have such experienced personnel on board for the live production of HBL Pakistan Super League.

“Since the very first HBL PSL season, we have endeavored to provide world-class production for our fans and media partners and this year, with the wealth of experience that Tower Sports and SportzWorkz bring with their team, we aim to further enhance our production experience.”

Chairman SportzWorkz Chris McDonald said: “A part of our commitment to the PCB and to Pakistan itself is to train local TV production professions on delivering a state of the art, top level, international live cricket production.

“We will be developing local capacity by conducting on venue and classroom style training during the PSL for Pakistan professionals interested in having a career in sports production. Our goal, simply put, is to have a majority Pakistani crew in two to three years from now.”

In a major boost to the coverage of HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, the Pakistan Cricket Board and Sports News Television (SNTV) reached an agreement which will provide news broadcasters around the world access to match highlights of Pakistan’s flagship tournament.

Along with news highlights from all 34 matches, which will be played from 20 February to 22 March, SNTV’s network of global media organisations will also have access to coverage of all press conferences.

Founded in 1996, SNTV is a world class sports video partner relied upon by over 1,200 media organisations to fulfil their content needs 24 hours a day, with 115+ territories reached worldwide.

In US will be available on Willow TV. The schedule for all PSL matches also added on willow.

Ive read its going to show on HUM masala on Sky and HUM tv via the red button on Virgin media. HUM masala launches this week on virgin TV.

As usual the PSL even in it's 5th year will be telecasted in the poorest viewing quality in 480p.

Wonder when they will actually invest in an international viewing experience and for once televise it around the globe in HD where as now the world is mostly watching channels in UHD.

The production quality is in HD if you signup with cricket gateway or watch highligh on youtube

Its just the desi channels they are rubbish and are not willing to pay extra to broadcast their contents in HD

The PCB/PSL should stream it in 1080p on their YouTube channel all across the world for a larger and bigger impact/audience.

Watching the dark full of little pixels and adds after every wicket/over and missing a delivery while doing that is just an awful viewing experience.

The thing with Gateway is that you are a bit behind in the streams that they have to the actual action as I have done so in the past.

Tensport is still decent but quality of PTV sports is utter garbage

Terrible picture quality again.

Better of reading ball by ball commentary on certain websites compared with the quality of production on HUM or PRIME.

For the first time in the history of the HBL Pakistan Super League, the fans and followers of the league will enjoy cricketing-action in the country’s national language.

A star-studded commentary panel – including Ramiz Raja, Bazid Khan, Waqar Younis and Urooj Mumtaz – will call action in Urdu for five overs every innings, which will be carried on the local feeds.

This enhancement is part of the PCB’s drive to provide improved live coverage to its fans and followers, allowing people to get closer to the event and the game.

In another new initiative, the SpiderCam will provide interactions between players and commentators during the two Eliminators and the final in Lahore, giving fans the essence of on-field action.

The coverage of the most-anticipated league will be done in full High-Definition by 28 cameras, which include Ultra motion and Super SloMo cameras, and to bring up-and-close experience of every match, SpiderCam and Hawkeye will implemented across all four venues – Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi – along with real-time graphics and augmented reality.

Joining the commentary panel for the first time in HBL PSL are Dirk Nannes, a former Australia and Netherlands fast-bowler, HD Ackerman, former South Africa cricketer, Mark Butcher and Dominic Cork, former England cricketers, and Kass Naido, while Danny Morrison, Michael Slater, Alan Wilkins, and Jonty Rhodes return to the league.

Alan Wilkins said: “It has been an absolute honour for me to remain associated with HBL Pakistan Super League since its very first game back in 2016 and I am certainly looking forward to being in Pakistan this year for the fifth edition. This is a special occasion for everyone associated with HBL PSL and I feel lucky that I will be a part of this historic event.”

Jonty Rhodes said: “Pakistan is a fascinating country and when you talk about cricket, Pakistani fans make every experience extremely memorable. I have always loved being in Pakistan and I certainly look forward to a very entertaining HBL Pakistan Super League this year. There are some very talented star players who will be in action and that means we will get to see quality cricket.”

Danny Morrison said: “These are exciting times for Pakistan cricket with all 34 HBL PSL games taking place in Pakistan. The quality of broadcast in HBL PSL has been a hallmark over the years and it is just lovely to be involved in such a high quality production once again.”

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board has also announced the online streaming platforms and broadcast partners, which will take the on-field all over the world.

so it seems like no one is gonna broadcast this season in india.Very very disappointed.India and it's petty issues. awful

Viewership was decent in India.

Not sure what influenced this decision tho.

You don't know what happened..(Abhinandan says hi)? And then DSports decided to opt out half way during the season with the broadcast. So no wonder no channel wanted to take the risk this year.

It’s worrying to see that the PSL can’t get a proper UK sports broadcaster to air the PSL in its 5th year.

Most other leagues are shown on proper sports channel in the UK whether it’s sky sports or one of the lower end channels like Free sport.

Even the BPL and the Canada league were shown on Free Sport so it’s a bit disappointing to see it being shown Hum Masala again.

I asked Sky Sports UK - they didn't seem keen to deal with PCB.

That may change in the future, let's see.

At times it's actually difficult to see where the ball is.

I believe the production is in HD quality. But channels which have rights dont have a HD broadcast channel, so they broadcast in 480P.

Is that the issue?

Which channel shows IpL and bbl?

Dsports showed the finals and knockouts even after pulwama Balakot and abhinandan.

The telecast was off for somedays though.

I think if its not on Dsports this season, it may be due to legal issues its having between the two owners. Discovery and Lex Sportel.

That certainly has to be the issue

Sky is gonna show it in NZ this year, Irony is that audience in Pak will get to view it in garbage quality and those in foreign lands will get proper HD broadcast.

None of the Pakistani channels (Ten Sports, PTV Sports) are in HD. I don't think Hum Masala (UK) is either. So yes.

So it’s more of in issue of the PCB’s professionalism deterring people from working with them?

Because, I’m sure the PSL will attract just as much attention as the BPL and Mzsansi league if not more, so it’s puzzling why it’s not being shown on even the smaller sports channels.

Mzansi super league is only 2 years old and has already seen a few financial issues but it was still shown on BT Sport.

From a UK perspective, it's strange that the PSL is still stuck with Hum Masala. They could have gone the IPL way, where in the early days of the IPL the BCCI offered the full rights package on a season by season basis to ITV, a free-to-air channel in the UK, at a very reasonable price. ITV broadcast the IPL on one of it's secondary channels, ITV 4 and ran a basic show with Shonali Nagrani presenting the action. In the early days they de-prioritized it so much that if it clashed with rally car racing, the IPL would be shifted to ITV's website. Eventually because of the action they started getting strong viewing figures, not just from the British asian demo, but from the English public as well. By the time they got to the 7th Season it was so popular that they were getting guest analysts like Dominic Cork, Butcher and Simon Hughes in to analyse the action. Esha Guha got her start through this ITV as well. For those of you wondering why I'm mentioning this and why this is a big deal, ITV had previously never shown and given much attention to cricket at all, including England matches. After the 7th Season, the viewing public was so enamoured with the action, that the BCCI could sell the rights, at a good price, to Sky. Now with BT Sport involved as well, BCCI can play the competitors against each other to get the best price for their product.

Which leads me to the question @Saj
Do u know if the Hum Masala deal is a multi year deal with PCB? If not, at least for next year, PCB could approach ITV to broadcast the action, at a cheaper rate, to grow the UK fanbase. The fact that u have English players involved as well may pique ITV's interest further. The PSL should be a big revenue generator for the PCB, and they need the money to reinvest in infrastructure.

How many sports and non sports HD channels are there in Pakistan?

PTV Sports, Geo Super and Ten Sports are the main sports channels. None of them are broadcast in HD.

There are some HD news channels, but most of the popular ones aren't HD. Like Geo News, ARY News, etc.

Will there be an online stream to purchase in HD ? don't have access to the hum masala etc I usually watch stuff I like on NOW TV etc and use streaming services, I think in the initial season of PSL there was a site who offered a streaming service

pretty sure you can watch on the web. Their prices are pretty fair here in Canada. $10 for the entire PSL. Expect it's probably well priced in India as well.

OSN is no more showing any sports channels and JadooTV has removed PTV Sports/Geo Super.

Last time I tried cricketgateway and it was restricted in Kuwait.

That is because they are still filming it with watermelons and potatoes, they need to buy new equipment and upgrade their system!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe Hum Masala will upgrade their system for the PSL. I really hope that this is the case

For the Indians interested in PSL V , I came across an article which states DSPORT will televise PSL V in India but I am not sure if its true or not.

bhai you are moaning about HD or non-HD while we are stuck with no sports coverage at all.

lately OSN decided to discontinue all their sports channels (Football, Cricket, WWE network and so on) and just compete with Netflix by keeping movies stuff only.

The broadcast here in the US is in High Definition.

98% cable, satellite and all analogue TV viewers in Pakistan are given their feed through SD/Analog boxes.

Doesn't make sense to have HD distribution.

Pakistan Super League will air in Australia on beIN sports - all matches +finals -23 Live/ 11 Delayed

Hum will be paying a pittance- the PCB should have offered the PSL free to sky to develop the brand. Even the ITV 4 or one of the Channel 4s many channels should have been offered for free.

The deal means that beIN Sports will broadcast the tournament’s 34 live matches in Australia, as well as providing sports fans in the country with a daily highlights programme. The highlights will also be broadcast across the beIN Asia footprint in nine territories, including: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, East Timor and Hong Kong.

The 2020 Pakistan Super League, which is set to take place between February 20th and March 22nd, will be held entirely in Pakistan for the first time.

Mike Kerr, Managing Director at beIN Asia Pacific, said: “In a major year for Twenty20 cricket in Australia, we’re delighted to have secured the live rights to the 2020 Pakistan Super League further expanding our sports offering to subscribers in the country.”

I would have liked to have seen some freshening up of the presenters who are bang-average and don't add much value.

Are there any online broadcasters for PSL, even if it's not available in the UK? I've got a VPN and I'd rather not watch on TV especially if it's in SD on Hum.

Foxtel, the largest cable network in Australia, is broadcasting all PSL matches as well as opening ceremony live.

Just see DSports schedule on Jio TV at 9:30 there is schedule for sports programme but no psl match live .

Ive read its going to show on HUM masala on Sky and HUM tv via the red button on Virgin media. HUM masala launches this week on virgin TV.

Yeah, wasn't really bothered about it cos didn't think I had Hum Masala, but its available through red button on normal Hum TV as I've just found out.

For the guys watching PSLV on DSport in India, is the transmission getting disturbed i.e. the screen is getting blacked out frequently (every 1 min) ?

I am not sure if I am the only one facing the issue or are others also facing this?

Completely destroyed my mood for the night.

I dont know if its only in India, but the telecast quality isnt great.

The atmosphere though is 100 times of what it was in UAE.

Just tune in to all three available resources Geo Super D sports & Ptv sports ki looks better then geo super & d sports coverage is worst
