Pakistan Super League 2020 - Crowd Watch

It was safe to assume dislike for Karachi, when said poster brought in Karachi for no reason and that too for test matches while PSL is going on and National Stadium has been full 70-80% throughout the PSL.

And while Gadaffi Stadium had even worse attendance.

Did you see any test match played in any other city apart from Karachi and Pindi? Pindi crowd love for cricket is the reason I gave that reference.

Do watch the hightlights of Pakistan cup 2019 in Pindi , and the crowd was great.

Pindi has out-shined all crowds in pak.... the attendence has been amazing...

Lahore and Khi shld def learn from "pindi boys" .... well done ....

m from lahore ... just to put thing in context

Scenes in Multan for HBL PSL fixtures were extraordinary, says Wasim Khan

• “High-profile cricket was returning to Multan after a long gap of 12 years and the people of Multan well and truly embraced its return,” says the PCB Chief Executive

Lahore, 1 March 2020:

Approximately 80,000 fans crossed the turnstiles to welcome HBL Pakistan Super League in Multan. The three fixtures played across four days – which marked the first time of the league being held in Multan – saw rousing crowds at the 24,800-capacity Multan Cricket Stadium support not only the home side but also the touring parties.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had promised in 2019 to stage the HBL PSL, one of the most-watched T20 leagues across the globe, in Multan which is in line with its policy to take cricket in every nook and corner of the country and make the game accessible to fans all across the country.

For the very purpose, the PCB had earmarked PKR2billion for the renovation of the cricket stadiums in Multan and Rawalpindi, with a big chunk of it was invested on the Multan Cricket Stadium.

With the last international match in Multan being 12 years ago, that it was the right move was underscored by the humongous turnouts – which had almost the same number as in the stands waiting outside the gates to watch their cricketing heroes. Whether in post-match press conferences or in other interactions, both local and foreign squad members mentioned the resounding cheers of energetic fans.

Multan Sultans, the home team, made the four days memorable for the fans by winning all three matches against Peshawar Zalmi (six wickets), Karachi Kings (52 runs) and Quetta Gladiators (30 runs).

Andy Flower, the head coach of Multan Sultans, said: “Our stay in Multan has been a memorable one, thanks to the warmth and hospitality of the people of Multan. The support of the crowd was phenomenal in all three games and I hope that the home fans are proud of the performances that we put up before them.

“The atmosphere in the stadium was electric throughout all the matches and the fans showed great passion and love for the game.

“I would definitely rate this venue as one of the best ones in the world and look forward to coming back with Multan soon.”

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “High-profile cricket was returning to Multan after a long gap of 12 years and the people of Multan well and truly embraced its return. The scenes at the Multan Cricket Stadium were extraordinary and each and every fan in the stands made their presence felt by cheering every shot and wicket.

“These scenes, however, were not only limited to the stands. People in Multan have serious passion for cricket and one could feel that in every part of the city.

“The addition of another venue in the HBL PSL roaster must have delighted every Pakistan cricket fan. This is yet another major milestone in the PCB’s efforts to return to normalcy and that Multan leg of the HBL PSL turned out to be a success is largely due to the cricket-loving people of the city.

“These are the encouraging signs for the PCB and our next aim is to bring international cricket back to the city.”

some pathitic losers must be slitting their wrists seeing this...

the whinning and inferiority complex of such posters shld be pitied on

Multan really surprised me, i think the players especially the foreigners were taken back and did not expect such a warm welcome. great signs for PSL

I think next year they should do home away for every team each city has their 5 matches. Also could add another city? PSL will get better with time.

Quetta deserves one match next season. There are strong rumors of that happening

The security isn't that great, there have been attacks as recently as last year. I can't see anyone agreeing to play there.

Fly in and fly out

Not a big deal

Yes but you have to convince the players. Its been easy to do that with the rest of the cities which have faced little to zero attacks. Quetta had one literally weeks ago again. So it'll be a pretty big deal. Even I would love it if Quetta got games, but I'd be surprised if they did.

Yup, the gorra security officials wont clear it, regardless of security.

Forget Quetta, no point having a match there. Give Faisalabad a match and/or the next team. Focus on the core cities, build out the brand and go from there.

Stadium is inadequate, and they already got the whole National T20 Cup. Dont need psl as well, bit greedy.

PCB should consider giving less games to Lahore next season. The way their fans were leaving the stadium before the game does not inspire confidence. Not that I blame them. But generally aswell the games in Lahore didn't have the same numbers in the crowd as the games in Pindi, Multan, Karachi. Pindi and Multan in particular have produced capacity crowds on almost every occasion.

At the very least every team (barring Quetta) should be playing all their home games at their home from next season. And Pindi or Multan should get a play-off too.

Pakistan needs at least 10 venues to get the kind of crowds we want to see. Novelty factor plays a huge role. Cities like Abbottabad, Quetta, Mardan, Sialkot, Hayderabad, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Gujarat and Sukkur, should have a functional 40000 capacity stadiums. But that seems a bit far from reality.

The Sindh Government has contacted the Pakistan Cricket Board to show its readiness to host the next phase of Pakistan Super League as scheduled in Karachi. Sindh has assured the PCB that their health experts have given clearance for the matches as the coronavirus situation is under control.

Karachi was the first city where Pakistan’s first coronavirus patient has emerged and until now total two out of four cases in Pakistan have been reported in the port city.

Sindh government is also taking precautionary measures as it would install thermal scanners to check the spectators before they enter the stadium and would provide hand sanitizers all over the National Stadium.

A private company has offered its assistance to the Sindh government and would install over 200 sanitizers all over the stadium during the matches. Special health official would also be deputed at 11 entry points of the stadium along with the security officials.

The provincial government has also requested all such persons and their families not to come to the stadium to see the PSL matches who have recently returned from Iran or China. The second phase of the PSL at Karachi would start from March 12.

I think this is what's going to happen next year (InshAllah)

34 Total games

5 games Multan
5 games Peshawar (hopefully the rennovation is completed soon)
5 games Pindi
10 games Karachi
9 games Lahore

Multan, Peshawar, and Pindi will InshAllah be full-houses
Karachi will at least be 90% full for most games.
Lahore may have about 70-80%.

How the final phase of the tournament proceeds will also be a big indication for next year. The final in Karachi was a full house and people were willing to shell big bucks to get tickets so I think that should be fine.

They can expand it further, with one game at some smaller station. A game at Quetta could be symbolic but I'm not sure if that would be possible. It would be a monumentous task if they manage to get that done.

Such poor crowds in lahore on Saturday with a pathetic pitch.

I wouldn’t call it a pathetic pitch just yet, both teams haven’t batted on it yet.

Plus having one low scoring pitch after dozens of batting pitches isn’t a bad thing. Balance is the key.

Pathetic pitch. This doesn't help crowds as it results in low scoring games.

Loved the shrieking every time Dunk was belting those monster sixes.

I think you missed the pitch report, the amount of rain and moisture the night before made it behave that way. It was a true pitch otherwise

You can't blame Lahore crowd when their teams defeat is predictable even prior to start of the game, until today.

Thanks to Dunk, Lahore crowd will be back to cheer their team.

I also converted back to a Qalandar today.

According to PCB:

After nearly 80,000 spectators attended three matches in Multan, around 100,000 watched live action at the Pindi Cricket Stadium

It's amazing how crowds were full in Pindi even during the rain effected games and during the cold.

Any released figures on the average attendance in Lahore or Karachi?

Is it around 20K per match so far?

Will we be able to have about 500K spectators in the stadium over the entire duration of the PSL?

Pakistani people have given phainta to all the naysayers. The crowds have been astoundingly good.

How much would that be £££ do we know?

InshAllah once we get to a true home away system (or something like it given that QG can't play in Quetta), that's fewer matches per venue and more chances of a sell out. Hopefully InshAllah next year Peshawar, Faislabad are ready to be used and Hyderabad too.

Other factors will also come into play like Pindi having a better drainage system, the number of international series scheduled during the PSL window. InshAllah I'm hopeful that we will see a higher quality of international player next year, especially from England and WI

Lahoris getting their interest back with Qalanders on the rise.

WHAT A CROWDDD. Oh my lord, mazaaa aaa gaya yar. Electric. Another smackdown to the whiners.

Dont see the whiners anymore... :broad

They went on hiding after the first week lmao after getting phainta after phainta

It has been a tough PSL for them and that would be an understatement in itself.

It really has proven that playing at home is a massive advantage.

LQ are a different team playing at home in Lahore.
They have raised their game and level BIG time!

They also performed which has made the spectoats come to the matches or you reakon they would have stil come if they lost the previews matches

Nice crowd in Karachi - really sad this is the last time we will see this in PSL this year.

Hopefully this dead silence puts those who spent the first week of the PSL crying about the crowd in context.

Worrying to see so many people in the crowd not wearing masks.

The PCB had problems with lack of crowds in Karachi and Lahore but no such problems in Multan, Faislabad and Rawalpindi even in 2020 before Covid became a factor

Lessons to be learned

- Make the experience as Fan Friendly as possible ie no fans having to wait for hours, not being allowed to bring outside food, drinks with them, make sure all the double checking is easy and smooth

- Reduce the prices to reflect the state of the economy, keep the bulk of the ticket prices at Rs 100 and the best seats at Rs 1000-2000 for the VIPs. Having a packed stadium with the bulk of the prices at Rs 100 is better than empty stadiums

- Develop ticket stalls all over the city and limit the tickets being sold online.

- The provincial government, the PCB, the Franchises, the media has to promote the PSL, the matches on a war footing which means billboards, posters, lights, TV advertisements all over the city and in all news channels. This approach worked beautifully for the 2019 edition where we had full crowds in khi. The moment PCB takes it easy and becomes lazy that cricket is the only sport in the country, the PSL is the only premier product in the country, we don't have to do anything, people will come on their own, you will start seeing empty stadiums. Wrong, you have to work hard every day to keep this league running. Don't view the advertising, promotion, marketing expenses as an excess expenditure but rather than an important investment as continous full crowds will result in rewards in the form of consistent gate money and increased broadcasting, sponsorship money down the line

- The PCB, Franchises need to get out of their comfort zone and need to be more ambitious about growing the league, getting new fresh names, big names in the league. Make ruthless decisions, get rid of non performing coaches, players and punish non performers as sticking to non performing, ttfs season after seasons will tick off the fans

- Make sure the food vendors charge cheap prices for the fans

- Provide internet access to fans and perhaps phone charging outlets, sockets to fans

- We need to diversify to other stadiums and introduce a proper home and away system. Find a new summer window for the PSL and take this League to Abbotabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Swat, Quetta, Gwadar etc. Spread out the matches all over the country. Limiting matches per season to 4-5 rather than 15-20 per season to a stadium will maximize chances of getting a higher sold out crowd daily

Ramiz Raja mentioned that the PCB has set up a fan engagement department in the PCB. Boy they have a lot of hard work to do.
