What's new

Pakistan U19s [190/7] beat South Africa U19s [189/9] by 3 wickets to win quarter-final

I must say our batting has no talent what so ever in any age group of cricket whether male or female or else

Team of Shehzads this... not one batsman with any flair... This is what happens when a generation grows up watching Misbah

Taha was looking for innovative ways to get out.

Who is this Taha kid related to? Absolutely useles against off spin! Batting at 6 and can't play straight, threw his wicket away!

The only thing that can save us now is Haal and SA channeling their inner choke !!

The player in the beginning who plays anything down leg side is a decent bat. He can be groomed into a good T20 opener

I'm so annoyed with that Taha kid. The guy bottled it even though the required rate was 4 runs per over! This is what Pakistan is producing??

I think most of our players are selected by connection in PCB. Basit Ali is too corrupt

Australia India New Zealand and SA in semi finals. What is happening at grassroots can be seen at the senior level too

I'm signing off... we will botch this up 100% sure

Pakistanis love...

coming down the track to spinners

Patting each other on the back sides on wickets

All running to congratulate one fielder who does a decent block

Reply to English sledging by blowing a kiss

Extras making a big difference in this low scoring game. 9 for Pakistan in 50 over, 13 for South Africa in 35 overs

Russel arnold being his usual obnoxious self. He has something against Pakistan it seems.

SA capain is dumb

No slip when you need 3 wickets

Pakistan go through.

Zaryab, take a bow man. What an innings under pressure.

So even next generation of Proteas will be chokers ? And Pak will always remain a tournament team so forget abt bilaterals

Pakistan must not play this ordinary leg spinner against India/Ban .
Get in another quick bowler.

Running between the wickets and calling was pretty disappointing. Ali Zaryab looks very sound.

You’re right. Look at Pole, he made to look second coming of Warne against England, whereas against India he got phainty and was taken off after just 3 overs.

Best way to contain India is play your quality seamers.

South Africa is choker at every level on world stage. Their captain is very average. And pakistan is bowling side. Their batting is also bery average. If india reach semi final then it must be a final before final. Whoever win it will win final

Meh, that pair is yet to do anything of note. All talk no substance. :ashwin

Ask the Aussies hahaha

They were shaken by the sheer pace

Lol. First time they're watching young express pace bowler trouble the batsmen, that's why so much excitement. Trust me substance is more important than just talk and excitement.

Wahab also troubled Aussies in the last world cup:ashwin Later he became a crap ODI bowler.

Good work.... Once again they became hero....

they can easily chase this target in 43rd to 44th over but they dragged it and loose their wickets to make it interesting and to have a hero tag.... Gladiators.

It was another thriller at the 2018 ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup, and yet again, Pakistan were involved. Ali Zaryab once again had to perform a rescue act as his teammates floundered in a chase of 190 in the Super League quarter-final against South Africa at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday (24 January). His unbeaten 111-ball 74 propelled Pakistan after their bowlers had restricted South Africa to 189/9.

Given Pakistan’s top-order wobbles – a similar chase against Sri Lanka in their must-win final game was nervy as well – it was never going to be a straightforward chase. Especially with Zaid Alam and Rohail Nazir, their openers, looking to attack the bowlers rather than build a solid foundation. Zaid fell for a 9-ball 15, holing out off Gerald Coetzee, Ammad Alam followed suit and the tone of the innings was set.

At 38/2, Nazir knuckled down along with Zaryab, and the two put on a steady 25-run stand, during the course of which Pakistan seemed to have revived their innings. However, Nazir chased a Rolfes delivery wide outside off, nicking one to the ‘keeper, and it seemed a partnership just wasn’t on the cards for Pakistan. When Jason Niemand then had both captain Hassan Khan (14) and Mohammad Taha dismissed within four overs, Pakistan were 111/5 and South Africa seemed to have edged ahead.

However, Zaryab finally found some able support in Saad Khan. The two cut out all the loose, risky shots, opting to stonewall and inch their way ahead. It was the need of the hour. And it is what eventually won Pakistan the match. Their 65-run stand for the sixth wicket took Pakistan to within 14 runs of the target, with Saad even playing a few exquisite drives later in the stand.

However, in a burst of exuberance, he charged Kgaudisa Molefe and holed out. Muhammad Musa was dismissed for nought, and South African hopes once again rose. But Zaryab guided Shaheen Shah Afridi, and the two managed to sneak past the target with 13 balls to spare.

In the morning, there was some debate over how the pitch would play. Pakistan chose to bowl, with captain Hassan Khan hoping for his seamers to make early inroads, while South African captain Raynard van Tonder said he would have batted on a good surface. It was Hassan who was proven right, and spectacularly so at first, as his three fast bowlers reduced Pakistan to 43/4, finding movement in the air and extracting bounce from the pitch.

It was the bounce that got opener Matthew Breetzke, who added another low score despite briefly looking good. He flashed in the corridor and gave only a nick to the keeper. Second to fall was Jiveshan Pillay to probably the ball of the day, the promising Shaheen getting one to swing in a bit and then seam in further, finding the inside edge on its path to the stumps.

Then it was the turn of Musa, who found the edge of the bats of van Tonder and Hermann Rolfes, South Africa’s two century makers this tournament. Van Tonder’s was a leading edge which looped to mid-on, while Rolfes’ was more standard, driving at a ball that was only full-ish which straightened.

Wandile Makwetu and Jean du Plessis initially struggled against the fast bowling as well, even as Makwetu struck the only six of the innings, a top edge over fine leg. But with the introduction of spin South Africa found stability, Makwetu sweeping well, and du Plessis content to rotate the strike. They were parted after adding 59 by Hassan, du Plessis aiming a cut at a ball too full to do so and top edging to third man. But Makwetu and Niemand continued where they left off, and South Africa could dream once again of 250.

It was Musa who struck the key blow, and it was once again pace and bounce that did the trick, Makwetu being rushed into a pull and looping one to deep square leg. Though that put 250 out of range, South Africa at least got close to 200 thanks to Niemand and Jade de Klerk’s partnership of 36, the pair tucking around the change bowlers to good effect.

It was Shaheen who removed de Klerk, although from with a direct hit from long on rather than with a lifter from the crease, and from then on South Africa struggled, edging their way to their eventual total. It wasn’t quite sufficient.

Saw some of the SA bowlers. They were poor. Their openers could barely bowl at 130k’s. The land of Steyn and Morkel could not send a 140k bowler. All of them were trundlers. That spinner was mediocre.

SA batsman could not handle the pace of Pak bowlers. High 130’s was too much for them. Played like chickens on a belter.

May be SA do not care about these junior world cups. Their bowling was mediocre. I was hoping to see some 140k aggressive bowler opening for them. Instead saw one trundler after another going through motions.

yeah i was surprised too with SA attack but overall the quality of fast bowling in this worldcup is appalling

with few team have decent fast bowlers that about it

Pakistan Under-19’s wall. That’s how Hasan Khan, the team’s captain, described Ali Zaryab after the No. 4 batsman played yet another match-winning knock in a high-pressure chase to seal a spot in the World Cup 2018 semifinal.

Even as wickets tumbled around him, Zaryab remained unbeaten on 74 and took Pakistan home in chase of 190 for a three-wicket win over South Africa, who refused to give up till almost the very end. It was the Zaryab’s consecutive half-century, after a similar knock of 59 against Sri Lanka in a chase of 189 helped Pakistan get to the quarterfinal.

“The wall for Pakistan Under-19 cricket team,” said Hasan after the game. “The way he batted today and in previous match as well, I hope he continues that form and do well in the next few matches as well.”

Pakistan found themselves in trouble at 111 for 5 and still needed 79 more when Saad Khan, the No. 7, joined Zaryab. The two batted together for a 65-run stand filled with sensible batting and calmness the top order would do well to learn from. Saad, and Muhammad Musa, who had played a crucial finisher’s knock against Sri Lanka, fell late in the chase but Zaryab took Pakistan home without any panic.

“I was only thinking about playing the 50 overs,” explained Zaryab. “If I play 50 overs, I can chase on my own. I was confident because I knew that I can finish on my own. My game is to start with singles and score heavily against bad balls, that was my game plan.”

Zaryab’s knock earned praise from the opposition skipper as well.

“Under the circumstances, it was a fantastic innings from him,” said Raynard van Tonder, the South African captain. “He batted really well and was quite calm under pressure. He showed great maturity to finish the game for them, so well done to him.”

Van Tonder’s counterpart was obviously pleased with Zaryab’s effort but agreed the job shouldn’t have been made that difficult.

“We could have finished it earlier and more easily,” he assessed. “But it’s a learning experience for all of us. Hopefully we don’t repeat them in the next match. Exceptional bowling once again. The way they bowled today was outstanding.”

The next match for Pakistan will be against the winner of India and Bangladesh, leaving a potential India v Pakistan clash in the semifinal. Hasan was not bothered who would progress to meet his side.

“Not really, as I said at the start of the World Cup, any team can do anything,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the match, we’re not worried about which team we’re facing, we’ll stick to our basics and hopefully we’ll do well.”

On the other hand, van Tonder rued yet another top-order collapse. Apart from their first match against Kenya when they scored 341, South Africa have been 112 for 5 against Windies, 76 for 4 against New Zealand and now 135 for 6 against Pakistan.

“Our top order didn’t step up today,” he said. “I believed fully that they are going to score some runs but unfortunately they didn’t. Our middle order batted quite well to get us into a decent position. I think we were about 20 runs short, if we could have got 20 runs somewhere, we could have been quite close of winning this.

“As a batting unit we haven’t really stood up. I felt only in the Kenya game we batted well, but we got ourselves into trouble with the bat every game.”

South Africa’s dreams of winning the tournament have ended, but there are learnings van Tonder takes back.

“Today’s game, playing in a quarterfinal on TV, lot of learnings and experiences going into the future if we get into the same situation again,” he said. “I’ve learned as a captain a lot and the team also learned a lot. For me, we haven’t really played on TV, so it’s about dealing with the pressure of other people looking at you from all over the world.”
