Inexperienced Pakistan fight against history

Pakistan have never beaten Australia in a bilateral ODI series in the UAE, and to reverse that, they will have to win the next three matches of the ongoing series, starting with the third ODI on Wednesday, 27 March.

Overview

Pakistan v Australia

Just how much difference can a single series make? Australia came to India as an unfancied side and beat them 3-2. They are now on a five-match winning streak and seem unstoppable. With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 just weeks away, this is a classic sign of Australia before such events: they just raise their game.

Most pleasing in this turnaround has been Aaron Finch’s return to form. The Australia limited-overs captain has gone from being somewhat unsure of his place at the World Cup to being confirmed as captain for the tournament and to making two centuries and a ninety in his last five one-day innings.

At the other end is Usman Khawaja, who has 407 runs from his last five innings. With Finch and Khawaja in the kind of form they’ve been in, Australia’s opening stand averages 104.5 in the last six innings. In this series, they have put on 63 and 209, and it has helped Australia run down targets of 281 and 285 with seeming ease.

The downside of this kind of top-order dominance is the middle order going untested for extended periods. It is the same issue that has ailed India for so long now. But with Glenn Maxwell, Shaun Marsh and Peter Handscomb all having found form recently, it’s not an immediate concern.

Pakistan are inexperienced, but they have had their performers with the bat. Haris Sohail struck a century in the first ODI and Mohammad Rizwan did so in the second. It’s with the ball that they have lacked incision, taking four Australian wickets in 97 overs this series. Yasir Shah, especially, who has had so much success as a Test cricketer in these conditions, has been disappointing, taking 1-116 in 20 overs.

On the bright side, fellow Test regular Mohammad Abbas has had a decent start to his limited-overs career, giving away 82 runs in 17 overs while dismissing Finch once.

But wickets are what Pakistan need. It’s what they need to turn up the pressure and test the Australian middle order. It’s also what they need to pick up a win and keep their hopes alive of winning a bilateral ODI series against Australia for the first time in the UAE

Key players

Haris Sohail (Pakistan): He bats at the all-important No. 3 position, is in good form, and has had a terrific start to his one-day career, where he averages 47.60 after 28 matches. If the top order fires, Sohail will be the one to build on it and launch Pakistan to a big score. If the top order fails, he will be expected to be the glue that holds the innings together and builds it.

Usman Khawaja (Australia): Khawaja is enjoying a tremendous second wind to his one-day career and seems determined to make that opening slot his own at the World Cup. He faces direct competition from David Warner, who like Khawaja, bats left-handed at the top of the order. Since the start of the India series, Khawaja has made 495 runs in seven outings at 70.71 and is Australia’s most consistent batsman in their current line-up.

Raining in Abu Dhabi atm.

Pakistan vs Australia | 3rd ODI | Abu Dhabi | Mar 27, 2019 | Match Thread

Regardless of what transpired the first two matches, Pakistan should still look to bat first if they win the toss. The Abu Dhabi pitch functions on a whole different level in comparison to the one in Sharjah.

Australia will score 350+ and show our trundlers brigade how to play on this pitch.

If aus lose today that would be embarrassing doesn't matter if they're winning 2-0

I desperately want this team gets humiliated so Inzi will force play better players than his favorites.

Well, the management has already confessed that they ain't interested in winning or losing, all they are looking for is to try out different combinations before the world cup to settle to final 15 ... getting humiliated from this Aussie team in our own den would hardly ruffle any feathers...

Mohsin Khan STILL talking about THAT England series. :))) :)))

Lines fron feture Year 2040. Mohsin khan at the age of 90. He is admitted in hospital and his comments are, "when i was couch we white wash england."

If Sadab does not recover from injury Inzi will most likely select Yasir which is my main concern.

my boy shinwari proving to be more effective than amir. but the rain helped him get some swing

Excellent first over from Shinwari.

His lack of performances in T20s and death overs shouldnt be confused with his ability to strike with new ball and in the middle overs with reverse.

Also this wicket is more suited to seam bowling than Sharjah

Good to see Shinwari is bringing it back in to the right handers again.:wy

Edit: nvm just saw it was Kwahaja

Surprising that Junaid isn’t getting the new ball here but hopefully Hasnain can do well here

His swing has always been across to the right handers however sometimes with seam movement his ball nips back to right handers

good move to start with hasnain need finch..i dnt want him to break the record of centuries

Funny how pacers are being dropped and rotated while Yasir Shah is sitting alone on that spinner’s throne with no one to challenge him

Said it before too, Shinwari is a good ODI bowler, just make sure he is used early and a late middle order spell, he is not tight enough for the death overs. We shouldn't judge his spot for the world cup off PSL or the T20s against South Africa

where are the people calling shinwari a trundler? also waiting for 2nd trundler junaid khan, who will also suprise fans

Hasnain hasnt bowled more than 90mph but regularly up there and his control is very good

I reckon, Shinwari, Junaid and Hasnain are fighting for 2/3 spots for the world cup. Amir and Abbass defenitely behind now.

Hasnain has bowled beautifully in this over.

May get a wicket in the next over if Shinwari doesn’t release the pressure.

Under Inzi its hard to tell. He might take both Abbas and Yasir and leave Junaid and Sadab.

Hasnain off already. How did he look with new ball speed and swing wise? Does he look exciting for new ball in uk come summer?

Unless Hasnain gets wicket it will be same story like Amir. Haris Rauf should be tested in this series along with Umer Khan/Usama Mir/I Sheikh..

Waqar suggesting Pak should play two spinners in June and July.

And junaid doesnt play for Pakistan on most occasions. He is most experienced ODI bolwer we have

What about Warner? Warner and Smith direct swap for Marsh and Handscomb?

Warner
Khawaja
Finch
Smith
Maxi
Stonis
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Hazelwood
Zampa

Lyon
Handscomb
Richardson/ Coulter Nile
Marsh

I think that is what Australia will go for. Don’t see Turner making the squad. Handscomb has to at least be in the squad as he is a back up keeper.

Decent pace and got just a little bit of shape. He will be used in 3-4 overs spell due to his pace him still being young. His pace with slightly older ball will be more

even if junaid takes a 5 fer, he will be hated by fans. and the poor guy probably won't get a game in the world cup

Was shape only inswing?

Some tough decisions for Inzi coming up with Junaid, Shinwari and Hasnain all looking good and also better than Amir. However, I believe Amir could have been effective as well in Abu Dhabi.

Seeing Yasir's name in that lineup boils my blood

Same here but it could be worse for World Cup squad and post World Cup. Inzi is very bad as a selector but I fear his replacement will be worse.

Junaid always performs for Pakistan. Just because his pace has gone down to 130s, still has enough skill to get wickets

Was shape only inswing?

Nope ball came in to Marsh a little so outsing to right handers. Still need to work on his seam position to extract more swing in conditions which assist

I hope we don't play 2 spinners, Shadab is enough, need 3 pacers and 2-3 part timers to fill the 5th bowler (Hafeez, Fakhar, Haris)

Who thinks Amir would be great here with swing on offer? We must realise amir played on roads compared to today. Not Amir fan but feel for him not playing on this pitch today

Shinwari has been so impressive so far. Not giving Finch any room to breathe.

Shinwari length bowl accuracy has been pretty good

Finch is so passionate and calm. Our batsmen would have thrown their wickets if they scored back to back centuries.

I am a great Amir fan but unfortunately he is not good enough to play for Pakistan under current form.

still got most of this ODI, and then 2 more to find the right combo. So far Husnain, Shinwari and Junaid have clearly been better than Amir and Abbas
