Pakistan are No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Team rankings, but they come into the series against Bangladesh with six losses in their last six completed games. Will the return of the experienced Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez help them turn things around?

Overview:

Pakistan v Bangladesh
1st T20I
Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore
Friday, 24 January; 2:00 PM PKT), 9:00 AM (GMT)

Pakistan won only a solitary T20I in 2019, losing each of their eight other completed games, including a 3-0 whitewash against a depleted Sri Lankan side at home in October. The management was moved to make wholesome changes after that series, axing Sarfraz Ahmed and appointing Babar Azam as the captain.

Azam's first series at the helm – in Australia – was an unenviable initiation as his side suffered two big defeats. Now back in the comfort of home against a side facing their own challenges, he will want to stamp his authority.

He has a promising young side to work with, including four uncapped players – Ahsan Ali, Amad Butt, Usman Qadir and Haris Rauf. Of those Pakistan will perhaps be most eager to give Rauf a cap after he dazzled in the Big Bash League, demonstrating his sharp pace and accuracy while picking up 16 wickets from just seven matches for Melbourne Stars, including a hat-trick.

Also back in the side are seniors like Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik, who were dropped for the Australia series. Pakistan will hope for them to lend more solidity to a mercurial batting line-up.

Bangladesh showed some spark against a young Indian side in their most recent assignment, in November 2019, registering their first ever win against the opposition, but lost the series after successive defeats. They will be happy to welcome Tamim Iqbal, their leading-run scorer across formats, who is back into the fold after a break, and adds great value to the team with his experience.

Younger players like Mohammad Naim – who was the leading run-scorer in that India series with 143 runs from three knocks – and Afif Hossain have exhibited tremendous potential in their short careers so far, and Bangladesh will know that if they click, they will be in with a strong chance.

What they said:

Shoaib Malik (Pakistan batsman): "Bangladesh are bringing a strong team. Their system has become stronger over the years. A well-balanced side is coming. But if you look at our T20 team, we have lots of players who have plenty of experience."

Mahmudullah (Bangladesh captain): "Everyone in the squad has done well in the BPL. I am confident with my team. We have to see how well we can apply ourselves in Pakistan."

Conditions:

Weather in Lahore is cool and the temperature is expected to drop to single digits later in the evening. The pitch is expected to be a well-balanced one with support for all disciplines.

Honestly, if we're going to play Malik or Hafeez they should be playing up the order. What's the point of adding 'experienced players' and playing them down the order? Although I hope we don't see them.

has any test playing nation played a T20I in Pakistan before 2009 ?..curious to know..
i know srl, windies and bd,zimbabwe but that was post 2009?

Hafeez is the perf number 5/6 imo

No Khushdil Shah. Brilliant job. Seniors given the deserving chance to cement the place

Rameez spent a good amount of time talking about Rauf and then asks Babar whether there is any debutante in the team

3 4 5 all belong to the same category, ridiculous to see. There was no need for Malik and Hafeez, but probably Misbah doesn't want to be in anyone's bad book. No specialist batsmen in the middle order, lol, let us see how it fares. Khushdil Shah should have played in place of either Malik or Hafeez, at least. Ridiculous playing XI.

I don't like this Pakistan team. They may win the game today, but this is not the way to go if you're preparing for world cup. Hafeez, Shoaib, Iftikhar and Rizwan are proven failures and three of them are on the wrong side of age. The match is against BD and the venue is Lahore, the odds are in favour of Pakistan anyway; I would have selected youngsters in the place of Hafeez, Shoaib and Iftikhar.

Why are you against Iftikhar? The guy smashed Cummins and Starc in their backyard. Apart from him, rest of the analysis is fair enough.

That's true. Iftikhar played quite well against Aussies. I take back my comment against him. He has earned his place.

Excellent team, barring Malik and Rizwan.

Just need two proper hitters in place of these two duds and we can win the cup.

Broadcast quality is pathetic. Not even getting 30fps, it's stuttering for me.

Anyone else getting a smooth broadcast?

Hafeez as well. Who would you have replace Rizwan though?

Hafeez can smash the pacers and has good range of shots. One of our top 2 T20 batsmen since 2018. So, I'm not too worried as he will be handy in Aus.

Rizwan can be replaced by Umar if the latter agrees to keep. Or we can look for someone else, but will be difficult to find a keeper who can also hold a bat.

Kamran is best WK option and Sarfraz after that, but both have to play at top 3.

Poor time to start the match. With the Friday prayers crowd won't start coming in until 3 pm.

Pathetic timing

Couldn’t they extend by half hour, namaz sey direct kis tarah ponchay

Why does the camera work seem so shoddy? Its almost like a domestic match, not following balls, not zooming in or out correctly

If we loose this series Misbah will be under pressure. But he will still be our coach.

Is there any reason as to why this is a day game? And what are the timings of the other 2 T20Is?

Because its friday prayers time. I don't understand why people keep asking this question. You must be really oblivious to not know this.

It's pathetic from pcb to start match at this time then.

Agree with you. Its PCB who should be blamed for starting the game right after Jumma prayers. I'm skipping lunch today at work because of this. Idiotic PCB and Wasim Khan.

Hasnain has been really poor since his debut.

Not bowling good pace either.

He isn't going anywhere if he doesn't learn some skills - proper length, ability to move.

Something seems off indeed. Rookie camera work.

If we loose this series Misbah will be under pressure. But he will still be our coach.

He has got PM's backing. He will remain there until 2023 but by then he will destroy the next decade as well.

2 decades of destruction of Pakistan cricket. He is more damaging to our cricket than Match fixing could ever be.

I've been a huge fan of Misbah during his playing career but his selections are horrible. Imad, Hafeez, and Malik are pathetic selections. These players have no future yet he selects them.

We should have started with Haris Rauf. Bad planning by Waqar, Misbah and Babar.

Disappointed both Hafeez and Malik are playing today. facepalm:

Atrocious selection. This is the new revolutionary change chamchaays are talking about.

I fear as though this win will paper over the cracks that we have in our team. With selections like these we will suffer abroad.

How old is Rauf? He doesn't look very young. My guess is at least 25.

Flat pitch....lots of runs expected apparently
