Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | 1st Test | Abu Dhabi | Sep 28 - Oct 2, 2017 | Day 4

Pakistan deserves every bit of it for this cowardly approach, and would be a great achievement to lose to 3rd grade SL side. But don't worry they still won't change this approach.

Fans' frustration is understandable. But this is how test cricket is played in UAE.

Pakistan must erase as much deficit as they can with 2 remaining wickets and hope for SL collapse late today.

Otherwise, this one is SL's game to lose.

and the fastest ever 300 plus run chase was done on Mars and fastest century at the time was also scored on some other planet by Misbah? Am I missing something,? and I am not asking to go at 5 rpo but at least 3rpo is more than achievable, and we would have been in the lead by now Big Mac

You're comparing a do or die chase and batting for the declaration with trying to set a first innings total?

Aggressive, brave, attacking Aussies didn't score at 3 RPO on these pitches.

You can't score quickly on UAE pitches, there is a reason why we have played in this manner for the last seven years.

You can score quickly on these pitches if you show intent. Sarfraz has a SR of 72 in the UAE all because he shows intent. Niroshan Dickwella on this same pitch scored at a SR of 71.

Pakistan has played almost the same number of overs as srilanka but still almost 80 in arrears

U can score easily if u show some intent to rotate the strike but pak batsmen looks like every one playing for their spots

2.4 RR is satisfactory for you?

2.8-2.9 should be the target here.

Why has everyone started to panic. Both teams have played with a defensive mindset hence significant time has been taken out from the game. No way is SL declaring before giving a target of atleast 300 which means another 220 runs. If this holds true then SL will be batting for atleast next 2 and half session which means Pak will have to survive the remaining 2 and a half.

Draw seems to be the likeliest of all outcomes at the moment.

Don't underestimate Pakistani bowlers' aptness and Pakistani batsmen's inaptness

:ma

Even Sri Lanka had a RR of 2.71, you simply can not defend a RR of 2.4

One thing is for sure this wicket is very slow and even the turn is nothing alarming so far. Run scoring is not easy but if you are not looking to score getting a wicket is very difficult. Pak lost most of the wickets today while looking to score runs. For me SL will be under more pressure as they cant hold back and while going for shots might just collapse in 2nd innings. The matches in UAE are heavily in favor of team batting 1st as day 1 and 2 was best for batting and SL team has been in field for last 2 days now so its very interesting situation.

SL can lose this match from here simply because they are playing the crucial 3rd innings on the 4th day. if they collapse like we did against WI in Dubai, they could lose this Test match. We're still in a comfortable position I believe. However, a draw seems to be the expected result.

And yet Sarfraz's top score in the UAE was 112 from 195 balls (SR 57.43). Yes, Sarfraz has a good strike rate but look closer and you'll see that a large proportion of his scores are in that 15-40 range. If you're happy to settle for twenties and thirties as long as there is "intent" then I don't know what to tell you.

This match is going to be drawn. Harris Sohail needs to bat quickly and lower the deficit as much as possible by the next session for us to have any chance.

Just get close to parity - Haris must farm the strike and aim for around 380.

Then see if we can induce a 3rd innings collapse.

That is because Sarfraz is not a regular batsman who knows how to construct an innings. All the batsmen in the side don't have to play at a SR of 72 to match Sarfraz. In these conditions a SR of 45 is perfectly fine. Anything above 50 and its excellent. However we are stuck in this 35-39 SR mold from batters 1-6 irrespective of the match situation. Misbah and Younis grafted but accelerated when required. I've never seen Azhar, Sami, Shan, Asad to press on after the new ball has been blunted in the UAE.

It was apparent after SL took 5.5 sessions to score 419 that there were only two ways Pakistan can win the match:

1) Score at around 3.12-3.30 RPO to give themselves time to bowl SL out in the 2nd innings.
2) Rely on a miracle that SL collapses spectacularly in the 2nd innings on the 4th day.

Right now we're relying on the 2nd option. I believe the mindset of the Pakistan management and team is simply to have safety first by not losing the Test match rather than having that mentality of asking yourself "Ok, here's the match situation so how can we win this Test match first and foremost?" It's definitely a mental block.

Yep. Probably a draw but more pressure on Sri Lanka if we can get another 40-50 runs. If they try to bat quickly and lose some wickets it could induce panic, if they shut up shop and deadbat everything then the same thing can happen if they find themselves three or four down for not many runs.

They will be wary of setting us a target after the last time so they will probably aim for at least 350+ and that will take too much time out of the game. Hopefully the next game will be played on a pitch that has a little bit more for the bowlers.

Pakistan struggling against a team that got whitewashed at home just a few days ago. :))

That's what you get for playing negative cricket.

Harris is a terrific batsman who has everything in him to become world class. Salahudddin and Alam are practically the same.

These guys need to get going now. What are they waiting for? I remember Hasan being quite the aggressor and I'm sure Harris can pack a punch. A quick 40 odd here in 3 overs would be more than enough. Come on, boys!

If they could start playing it like the last 5 overs of a T20, Pakistan would at least get as close as possible to the lead. Otherwise we're just going to waste time and get bowler out with a huge deficit.

Herath is seriously underrated cricketer, only fighter in SL team.

Underrated? Who doesn't rate him? Everyone knows and acknowledges he is one of the best spinners in the world.

Hasan Ali can be someone who can contribute with the bat. Hope he keeps working on his batting.

Haris has arrived too late in this lineup , his actual age might be 30 31. Has lost good 4 years due to injury and non selection.

Hopefully Hasan Ali can replicate this type of hitting in LO as we are struggling for a late order hitter.

Classic example of if you want to score quickly, you can irrespective of the pitch. All it needs is intent.

That was excellent ball striking by Hasan.

Pak right back in the match now.

Was looking at Hassan's stats at the FC level with the bat prior to this innings, his average of 16 suggests he can spend time at the crease; hopefully with more experience he gets better. Nice cameo from him though.

Great 50 from Harris, he certainly looks the part at this level. And congrats to Herath, what a old warrior; won't shed a tear at all when he retires SL_Fan :mv the last of a breed which has died, the final cornerstone of Lankan greatness #EndOfAnEra

Very clean hitter, Pakistan don’t have many players who can stand and hit sixes against spinners. Most have to use their feet to come beneath the ball to get elevation.

If I remember before Hasan Ali only Shahid Afridi could do this...?

Lovely batting by Haris and great striking by Hasan.
Another hour of Sarfraz and we would have 100 runs lead. Poor shot by him.

Lols none of the commies know that Abbas has has good defence. Poor stuff.

Few ppers questioned Haris fitness and never played a FC match for so long. He shows what he is made of and his FC average of 52 is there to see

Good stuff from Haris and Hasan, completely taken away the momentum that Sri Lanka had built

Jaan seh bohloh Sohail Tanvir, Piyar seh bohloh Sohail Tanvir. I like this chant Red Devil

So Haris hasn't sorted out his short ball game. Still rely on 'see ball hit ball' recepie. Should focus on getting into a better position after picking the length before swinging his bat.

I think he was trying to hit it straight because midoff and mid on were in and there was a boundary opportunity there.

Am still not compatible with the idea of facing Herath on day 4 or 5 and the wicket as it stands is not too bad so the lankans will look to get the most out of it today. So the momentum has not overly shifted in our favour if at all, it's still pretty even; lets see how the day ends, crucial few hours coming up.

Yea we're def not in control but the feeling on the field seems to have shifted, Sri Lanka were thrilled at lunch but now the Sri Lankan players look frustrated and tired and that might affect how they bat

It's very different thinking from Haris. Letting Abbas to play Herath over... Hmmm...

There's turn but its slow turn. Will need a big effort from our bowlers to force a result otherwise it looks a draw.

Abbas doing his job really well here. Credit to him for working on his batting.

What is the point of blocking? Please get out and let Lanka to bat. 10 runs will not be any difference

Gone back into blocking mode. Please tell me Harris isn't looking for his hundred. It's IMPOSSIBLE.

Finally a boundary after a few overs of blocking. Haris Sohail could get a century if he just starts hitting out now.
