“Against Australia, we had rested seven of our key players and in the last two games we had rested around 10 of our main players but the team still fought hard in those matches and that is a very good sign for me,” the former Test captain told the media in Peshawar on Wednesday.

“I am confident we will pick a very good team for the World Cup and Pakistan will be among the favourites for the title,” he said.

He made it clear that despite the whitewash against Australia he and his selectors believed they had done the right thing in giving rest to seven key players.

“These players needed rest before the World Cup and we have a hectic schedule in England going into the tournament that is why we rested them and we also wanted to try out our bench strength,” he added.

The veteran of 120 Tests pointed out that the series against Australia had produced at least two good talents for Pakistan, batsman, Abid Ali and fast bowler, Muhammad Hasnain.

“We are ready to give some new players a chance in the World Cup because we have a balanced side with variation in the bowling which will be important in English conditions.”

Inzamam terms KP Talent Hunt Program vital for searching new faces

Chief Selector Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Inzamam Ul Haq and star wicket-keeper batsman Rashid Latif termed KP Talent Hunt Programme initiated by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a vital step to search out new faces in cricket and seven other games. Talking to media men during a press briefing here at Media Center, he urged upon the Directorate of Sports KP to extend such programme at U-14 level so that to develop the much needed nurseries of various games at grassroots level.

While appreciating the Talent Hunt Program, Inzamam said allocating Rs50 million for the Talent Hunt Program initially is very encouraging steps taken by Senior Minister for Sports, Tourism, Culture and Youth Affairs Muhammad Atif Khan and keen interest shown by DG Sports KP by involving Kabir Khan, Wajahat Ullah Wasti and other international and first class cricketers who visited across KP and merger tribal districts and conducted trials.

Answering a question about Pakistan team performance against Australia, chief selector Inzamam said that the team have given good fight despite we have rested 5 to 10 playing eleven players and hopefully the selected players would give good result in the World Cup.

Rashid Latif said that looking after the upcoming batsmen mean KP have good talent and certainly these batsmen would go through under qualified coaches would learn more as far their developing their skills are concerned.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Inzamam is the leading run scorer for Pakistan in One-Day Internationals, and the third-highest run scorer for Pakistan in Test cricket, appreciated Senior Minister KP Muhammad Atif Khan for launching Talent Hunt Program in nine different games including cricket.

Inzamam is the only Pakistani batsman to score 20,000 runs in international cricket. He was the captain of cricket team from 2003-07 and is considered to be one of the best leaders in Pakistan Cricket history. Inzamam rose to fame in the semi-final of the 1992 Cricket World Cup. Inzamam retired from international cricket in 2007, following the second Test match against South Africa, falling three runs short of Javed Miandad as Pakistan's leading run scorer in Test cricket at the time. Following his retirement, he joined the Indian Cricket League, captaining the Hyderabad Heroes in the inaugural edition of the Twenty20 competition.

In the ICL's second edition, he captained the Lahore Badshahs, a team composed entirely of Pakistani cricketers. In April 2016, he was appointed the chief selector of the Pakistan National Cricket Team.

Inzamam said that a total of 6000 players from 36 districts including district of recently merged tribal areas took part in the trials in their respective districts, out of the 6000 players 250 players were short-listed for the second phase of trials at Maazullah Khan Cricket Academy Peshawar.

Soon after selecting 250 players, he said, medical checkup of the players were conducted at Shoukat Khanum Hospital to ascertain age of every individual. He disclosed that out of 250, 110 players according to the medical report, were declared overage and 140 were called for the trials.

Out of 140 players, a total of 82 players were short-listed in the morning session of the trials supervised by Inzamam and final 60 were short-listed to make four teams of 15 players each. These teams, he said, would play seven One-Day and as many Twenty20 matches before final selection of 20 players for a longer duration of training and coaching under qualified coaches.

A contract would also be signed with these final selected 20 players for two years. Answering a question, Inzamam said that out of the final 20 players the chances of the players would be high enough to be selected for the forthcoming Under-19 World Cup and other national teams.

This KP talent hunt program sounds good but it needs to channel into grade cricket or FC cricket if it has to provide benefit to Pak Cricket.

Plus there is another hitch. You can find bowlers with potential of becoming good pacers, swing bowlers or spinners or even fielders, but I don't think you can assess a batsman through a few trials. Batting is a comprehensive art that requires a lot of hardwork before it can reap results as compared to bowling which requires special skills that can be further developed with good training and hardwork.

Moreover, they should have appointed a vice captain at least 2 years earlier and should have shown the door to useless uncles.

Naming/announcing the squad isn't called preparation, just like preparing the playing kit.

Every top team prepares like to like replacements of their non-performing & under-performing players & starts working on shortcomings of their team couple of years prior to the WC. Our management & selectors have not done their job properly which is evident from the fact that we are bound to several under-performing/non-performing players in the squad for WC. Moreover, everybody knows the dual standards of our team management regarding fitness test have been used in the past.

Moreover, If you need an explanation regarding the benefits of having a vice captain then I consider it better to not argue with you. Just wait & watch, we will see the results/rewards of this preparation during WC.

A World Cup squad should be ready at least half a year in advance, with those lot practicing with one another and playing in all lead up matches.

What we have done with only a few weeks to go, a squad of complete uncertainty and no momentum is one of the biggest debacles in the history of Pakistan cricket.

We could lose every match for all I care, we can only play with the limitations of talent we have available, but to be so ill prepared in terms of a unit that will be an amalgamation of players who had little practice together in tandem with players who still have no clue whether or not they are on the squad is appalling.

We saw in the Aussie series players simply playing for spots and despite people saying they are selfish, at the end of the day, them playing is for their families, so I cannot say I would play any different if my spot is in jeopardy.

This Aussie series shouldn't have been to gauge who is in the squad, we should have already known that, and that not being the case is all on Inzi.

Even if we lose every match, having set squad would have been much better than this uncertainty and shows the consistent lack of planning and foresight that has plagued Pakistan cricket for almost two decades.

Pakistan’s Chief Selector, Inzamam Ul Haq said if Mohammad Amir can regain his form in the ODI series against England, he can still be considered for the World Cup squad.

The left-arm fast bowler, who played an integral role in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy triumph, has been axed from the preliminary World Cup squad, which raised eyebrows around the world.

“We still have a chance [to select Mohammad Amir],” said Inzamam Ul Haq while talking to ARY News. “He is a senior bowler and has got quality, if he gets his form back and performs well in the England series then we can consider him.”

However, Pakistan’s World Cup 1992 hero brushed off the argument that Amir should be selected for the mega cricketing event just on the basis of experience.

“We can compromise on performance a bit because of experience and other add-ons, but still performance matters,” he said. “If Amir will be in the side, with his experience and quality, the captain will be happy and it will benefit Pakistan.”

On the other hand, Haq justified the selection of Mohammad Hasnain and Abid Ali, who have played 3 and 2 ODIs respectively, saying that there were inexperienced players in the World Cup 1992 squad that made a lot of difference.

“I had played 6 to 7 matches [before the World Cup 1992], Zahid Fazal had 8 to 10 matches under his belt, there were Iqbal Sikander and Wasim Haider, Amir Sohail was also inexperienced, so it is all about the combination,” he said.

The former skipper did not want to select all the fast bowlers with similar pace, he believes the extra speed of Hasnain will add variety to Pakistan’s bowling arsenal.

Inzamam Ul Haq believes that the team has got all the ingredients to win the global cricketing event, however, you cannot be sure about any team that they will become the champions.

“Pakistan are one of the four favourite teams to win the World Cup, I am not saying it, all the experts have this view,” he said.

The mega cricketing event will take place in England and Wales from May 30th to July 14th, where Australia will defend their title against the nine other competing teams.
