Recently, I've decided to ban / delete / unfriend dozens of Pakistani friends / cousins / distant relatives, and just simply aquaintances or friends of friends, from my social media and messaging (like whatsapp) accounts.
Some of these I had 'friended' over the years, whilst other just happened to be in my phone contact lists (which some services, like whatsapp, use).
Reason?
Just sick and tired of the constant stream of (badly photoshopped) photos of 'Allah' or 'Mohammed' written on trees, in the clouds, inside pieces of fruit... or images of quotes of religous verses or hadith as motivational status updates. Worse is when these same individuals start bombarding you with pics and/or videos of a similar nature on your messaging apps.
e.g. Totally out of the blue, one (very) distant cousin, whom I'd never met but I'd added his name in my contact list (- I had a need to contact his father to get some info on an old property matter that my (deceased) father had not fully sorted before he passed away), suddenly started sending me reams and reams of religious essays, and clogging up my messaging app.
And if it's not a million and ten variations of the same religious 'motivational' pics, then it's links to snippets of debates and discussions of politics and/or religion from Pakistani tv channels.
It's as if everyone is competing with each other to see who can find and post the most of such pics and links before anyone else does.
And to cap it all, everyone on your contact list feels that they must post some meaningless congratulary response, usually of the type "subhanallah", "mashallah" or similar.
Unfortunately some of these contacts one cannot simply delete or ban, as occasionally they send genuine messages, which may be important and/or require genuine replies.
Is it just me in that I am very unlucky in terms of cousins / distant relatives/ aquaintances etc, or do others also experience similar problems? Or am I using these services and apps incorrectly?
And if so, what's your method of dealing with them?
