According to me, most of the batters pick themselves up, either due to being in the team for long time(seniors) or through good performances. So everyone knows, barring injury, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Sarfraz Ahmed will be going to SA, the conundrum here will be the openers and the back ups. Hafeez will be a big big gamble. I would prefer to take Imam(if healed properly and in form) alongside Azhar Ali, followed by Haris, Asad and Babar. The back up batters are likely to be Usman Salahuddin and probably Sami Aslam/Shan Masood, although I would pick Saad Ali or Fawad Alam alam alongwith Fakhar as a backup opener. Whatever our top 6 is, I don't really expect centuries from our batters and it is the bowling department who I am looking at to deliver the goods for us. Get SA under 150 in first innings and you have a great chance to win the Test.
There will probably be Rizwan as a backup keeper for Sarfraz.
So now comes the interesting part.
Yasir Shah will definitely be the lead spinner on tour followed by either Bilal Asif/Shadab. Let's look at how Bilal does in the upcoming Aus and NZ Tests and then decide if he is good to go to SA. Honestly, if I have to pick Bilal, it would only be for his offspinners, I don't think his batting is good enough be classified as a bowling allrounder. His batting is probably at Hasan Ali's level.
Now comes the interesting part, Who would you have in the pace department. India went in with 3 pacer plus an allrounder in 2 Tests followed by all 5 pacers in the final Test if i am not wrong.
I believe there should be 5 specialist pacers plus a seaming allrounder(Fahim Ashraf as we don't have any other option, don't think Amir Yamin is getting a look in for Tests)
Mohammad Abbas would be the first name of the sheet for the spot of 5 bowlers. Who should be the other 4 pacers?
My 5 pacers would be
1.Mohammad Abbas
2. Junaid Khan
3. Shaheen Afridi/Amir (depending on how he is bowling in the domestic circuit and how willing he is to be out there and for 5 days)
4. Hasan Ali
5. Mir Hamza(not sure how good he is, but has been on the radar for a good while, might get a debut soon)
The left field selection would be to bring someone like Ali Shafiq from KRL who has been unplayable in QeA Trophy, but then KRL wickets aren't very batting friendly either.
Junaid IMO should be a must here. He is fit, has looked to be in good form, and conditions in SA will suit him as he will find some seam movement there. In addition, the leg injuries are hopefully behind him, he looks better than ever now. He would be the second pacer in my team.
The third one would be between Hasan, Amir/Shaheen and Mir Hamza.
TBH, I feel Hasan might not be very effective in SA, don't know why but I just have a feeling he will be easier to play in SA.
I hope we somehow manage to win atleast 1 Test this time around in SA.
What would be your bowling attack?
