What's new

Pakistan's new captain should be under 25

If we uproot seniority culture how will we pay respect to blessed in all facets Hafeez and "My real age is 41" Younis Khan and Quaid e Azam reincarnated Misbah? :91:

MMHS and Junaids are totally spot on. We need a cyclical approach to captains and players so they play within their ideal baselines.

We are not winning because we are picking players who are over the hill and/or not good enough.

Problem is Pakistan is so knee deep in seniority culture that it's going to take a revolution to climb out. We are also not producing any leaders. Sarfraz, a poor orator and zero charisma is the best we got? Azhar before him? Really is this all we have in the cupboard?

The day Pakistan has 10 players under 32 and a captain under 27 is the day we will start competing. Until then let 30 somethings huff and puff around the ground trying to keep up with the youngsters.

The thing is, seniority culture gets perpetuated by the oldest players, yet Azhar Ali and Yasir Shah and Asad Shafiq - just - are the only guys over 30 who justify a place in the team on performance. Even Younis Khan has reached a point where he fails three times as often as he succeeds.

My Test squad for the West Indies in a post-Sharjeel world would look like this, with a very flat age distribution:

Azhar Ali 32.3 - ineligible for captaincy due to his old age
Sami Aslam 21.5
Babar Azam 22.7
Asad Shafiq 31.3 - ineligible for captaincy due to his old age
Umar Akmal 27.0
Hammad Azam 26.2
Sarfraz Ahmed 29.11
Aamer Yamin 26.11
Mohammad Nawaz 23.2
Yasir Shah 31.0
Mohammad Amir 25.1
Ghulam Mudassar 18.7
Ehsan Adil 24.2
Rahat Ali 28.8

The only controversy here is no Younis Khan. I'd let him reach 10,000 runs in the UAE, but I wouldn't take him on a tour.

Although the thread states the captain to be under 25.... the major flaw comes when we hand captaincy from 43 year old to 24 old one.......

From M Clarke 33 to S Smith 26....
From B McCullum 34 to K Williamson 25....
From M S Dhoni 33 to V Kohli 26....

This Makes an average gap of 7-8 years of the previous captain to the new one, giving a 19 years gap is like making misbahs son the captain ....

What we need to do is to keep the gap maximum to 9 years e.g make someone the captain who is currently 34 but in our Case we can either make Sarfaraz the captain(29) OR M Hafeez (35) but we can make an exception by giving Safi the captaincy

The other thing is to make everyone retire at 34 no exceptions what so ever.

Carrying over the example, If we make Sarfaraz the new captain we should force him retirement even if he has won the ODI world cup ( MS Dhoni) at 34 with no changes in between
NOTE: I am talking about Test captaincy so nobody think that someone becomes a legend if he wins us the WC

From there we make a make new captain with experience of Domestic Captaincy and A well secure spot in the team. The one who should be given should be between 24-27 years of age, nothing below none above.

Carrying your Point of view,

Sami Aslam 25
Babar Azam 26
M Nawaz 27

Then including some other players of our 3-format who have featured at International Level Recently:-

Hasan Ali 27
Zafar Gohar 26
Nauman Anwar 25

Note: I am talking 4 years into the future....

Of the the Above 6 we have 2 great options who should be made permanent members of 2 of the 3 formats + given a try of 10 matches in the 3rd one to secure a spot as Soon as Sarfraz ( Carrying the example) becomes Captain.

Sami Aslam who would be 25...
Babar Azam who would be 26

These 2 should be properly Groomed whatsoever to be made into new Captains...

Nice comparison :))

In keeping with Soviet/Russian tradition, Pakistan should adopt the 'bald - hairy' theory of picking leaders. Misbah was hairy, so the next captain should be bald, and his successor should be hairy, and so on

The only bald person in the team right now is :uakmal
