Parthiv Patel, who made his debut at the age of 17 for the Indian cricket team during their tour of England in 2002, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The decision brings an end to his 18-year cricketing journey which saw him scale the peaks of Indian cricket team’s success in Australia and Pakistan while it also saw his career being overshadowed by the emergence of MS Dhoni from the period of 2005 all the way until 2020. Parthiv Patel was also part of several franchises for the IPL from Chennai Super Kings to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Parthiv Patel took to his official Twitter handle and made the announcement with a ‘heavy gratitude towards many’. Parthiv Patel did not feature in any games for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2020.

On his Twitter account, Parthiv Patel wrote, “Today, I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket as I bring the curtains down on this 18-year cricketing journey. I feel heavier with gratitude towards many. The BCCI showed a generous amount of confidence and faith in a 17-year-old boy to play for India. I am thankful to all the captains I have played under but I am especially indebted to Dada (Sourav Ganguly), who showed immense faith in me.”

Parthiv Patel also thanked the Gujarat Cricket Association, his father and uncle as well as the IPL franchises for backing him in a career that has spanned close to two decades.

He has had a strange career.

Received a lot of coverage when he was picked for the England tour in 2002 as a genuine 17 year old, but then he lost his place to Karthik and then Dhoni destroyed the careers of both.

In a parallel universe he would have played 150+ Tests for India.

His example illustrates how important career timing is. He was the best WK batsman India produced after Kirmani and before Dhoni, but because he made his debut only 2 years before the latter, he played far less Test matches than he would have otherwise.

Some players have unfulfilled potential because of their own laziness but others are simply unlucky, and he belongs in the latter category.

Sourav Ganguly Hails Parthiv Patel As "Brilliant Ambassador Of Indian Cricket"Sourav Ganguly lavished praise on Parthiv Patel, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly praised Parthiv Patel after the latter announced his retirement on Wednesday and also said that Parthiv's performance in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy final will remain etched in the history of Gujarat cricket. The wicket-keeper batsman had scored a ton in the final to power Gujarat to their maiden title win. He also played 193 List A games and scored 5172 runs, with a best score of 119.

The former Indian skipper congratulated Parthiv on a "fantastic career" and said his work was the main factor behind his success in international and domestic cricket. Ganguly also felt overwhelmed to captain the "brilliant ambassador" of Indian cricket.

"Parthiv has been a brilliant ambassador for Indian cricket. He has always been a team man and it was a pleasure to captain him when he made his international debut at the age of seventeen. His hard work has earned him laurels in international and domestic cricket," Ganguly said in a statement issued by BCCI.

"I congratulate him on a fantastic career and wish him the very best for his future endeavours. His performance in the Ranji Trophy final to win Gujarat their only title will always be remembered in the history of Gujarat cricket," he added.

The youngest wicketkeeper to make a Test debut, Parthiv, on Wednesday announced his decision to retire from all forms of the game.

He represented India in 25 Tests, 38 ODIs, and 2 T20Is. A gritty left-handed batsman, Parthiv, scored 6 Test fifties, which included a fine 69-run knock against Pakistan in Rawalpindi while opening the batting.

"Parthiv Patel has always played his cricket with passion. While he played some hard-fought cricket for the Indian team, his contribution in domestic cricket shall inspire the future cricketers," said BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

"It was a tremendous feat to lead Gujarat to a maiden Ranji Trophy triumph in the 2016-17 season, a testimony to his astute leadership qualities. BCCI congratulates Parthiv on a successful journey and for his contribution to Indian cricket," he added.
n his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, Parthiv played 139 games and scored 2848 runs and won IPL titles while representing Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

"From a young teen making his mark in international cricket to guiding the young generation in the right path, Parthiv Patel has come a long way. I take this opportunity to congratulate him on a fine career with Team India, Gujarat and his IPL franchises over the years. I wish him good luck for the future," said BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal.

very average as a batsmen not too dissimilar to Rizwan, However as people have mentioned had dhoni not emerged he could have developed into a much better wicket keeper batsmen.

i remember the 2002 tour and the coverage he got being the baby faced 17year old, hasn't look like he has aged much either.

35 is kind of early to retire in an Asian context. Looks like he was getting runs too in FC cricket. I think the fact that he didn't get a single game in the IPL this year under King Kohli might have hurt him and drove him to retirement.
