LAHORE: Former Test fast bowler Sarfraz Nawaz has asked his former pace bowling partner, Prime Minister Imran Khan to take notice of a recent move by his appointee, Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ehsan Mani, of finalising the name of a British national for the post of Managing Director of the Cricket Board.

Talking to Dawn, Sarfraz said that Dr. Wasim Shah, a British national, has been interviewed by the PCB for the key post and is the most favourite candidate for the job.

Sarfraz lamented that the PCB has been hiring officials on the basis of friendship and without any merit and asked Imran to check the practice.

He said though Wasim had the experience of holding a key management post with an English county, he had no knowledge about the problems and issues confronting Pakistan cricket. He contended that the post be given to a competent Pakistani national.

Sarfraz also appealed to Chief Justice of Pakistan, Saqib Nisar to take notice of the appointment of Wasim Akram in the PCB’s cricket committee despite the fact the former fast bowler had been penalized by one-man judicial commission of Justice (retd.) Abdul Qayyum in a match-fixing scam back in the 1990s.

Two fails here, one by Dawn and one by Sarfraz Nawaz.

1) The guy's name is Wasim Khan not Wasim Shah.

2) Yeah we've seen the brilliant job of Pakistani execs over the years in PCB. Maybe Sarfraz hasn't noticed but in the corporate world it's not uncommon to hire from outside the country.

Bitter ex-cricketers with colossal egos and no admin experience don't make for a good MD.

There are plenty of British Pakistanis who would love to offer their services for Pakistan and that too with great skill and expertise. This is an ego issue.

Wasim Khan as in the CEO of Leicestershire cc?

Would be a good appointment.

Pakistani ex- cricketers want to keep it as an old boys club

When the post was created, from the ad, I did mention that PCB is probably looking for a foreigner for this role as I don’t see anyone in PAK to fit in.

It’ll be a great appointment if so. May be the name of the post is different but it’s actually the CEO of PCB.

Yes that's him. Would be quite a coup.

This would be great.

He's done well after taking over at Liecestershire.

Here is a bit of perspective for Pakistani ex cricketers as to why Wasim Khan is a good fit

Leicestershire

Two years of recording a small profit, after three years of losses in excess of £500,000, and various upgrades to the facilities at Grace Road has seen the mood at Leicestershire switch to one of optimism under their chief executive, Wasim Khan. Key to the recovery has been increased commercial activity, such as a five-year naming rights to the ground, and the staging of a Sir Elton John concert last summer. This year they host seven matches in the Women’s World Cup, including England versus Pakistan.

Yes, perhaps they are also going to change the name of MD to CEO after constitutional ammendment.

Now I am sure that ad was customized to fit in this guy - below 50, educated, experience in cricket administration ... these basically take out the usual suspects, only left was Misbah who declined a similar role at IU. Add to that no need for international cricket experience as player & not closed for foreigners (passport holders) ... these combination fits perfectly on Wasim Khan.

And doesn’t fit on Intekhab, Haroon, Qasim, Javed, Zaheer, Mohsin, Qadir, Wasim, WY ......

Well they can cry as much as they wish!

Was wondering where this clown had gone, thought he was in jail. Last I remember was the Lahore court issuing a warrant for his arrest after repeatedly failing to appear in a defamation suit filed by the PCB.

Make that three because he also is not a doctor. :ma

Funny the man who fine-tuned his cricket by participating in the county cricket for many many seasons has the nerves to reject someone else who has not only played in the same county circuits and also had great experience as an administrator in the county circuit.

I am certain that Sarfraz is not alone and there are many more who think of PCB high up positions as birthright that are unhappy about it and in upcmoning months (I would not be surprised) we will see a media campaign on TV/Twitter Pak cricket experts voicing their unhappyness on Wasim's performance in this role. His every move, every decision will be questioned. I really hope that he can get through this but deep down I know it is not likely that he is going to sdurvive as he is up against the people who may have multiple grievences among each other (decades old) but they will combine forces in upcoming months to oppose Wasim's every decision, every move. Sad.

On personal note, I just ordered Wasim's biography. Should be interesing learning more about him

Sad but the fact is that many within the world of Pakistan cricket don't want to see non-Pakistan based people being given jobs at the PCB. The main reason being, they will go in and show-up those sat at desks doing nothing.

I read he still holds duel citizenship (PAK Passport), must be comfortable with one of PAK's main languages and guy has an excellent resume. Sarfraz probably doesn't even know him much!!!!!

I am waiting for his first interview at PP - must have to be a detailed one.

Stop PCB from hiring tainted persons, Sarfraz urges PM

ISLAMABAD - Former Test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz has urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to stop Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) high-ups from appointing all the certified tainted persons at high-profile slots.

Talking to The Nation, Sarfraz, who is inventor of reverse swing bowling, said: “As a patron-in-chief PCB, former captain and world cup winner, the PM must intervene to steady the sinking ship of the PCB and made appointments purely on merit. I am getting news from different circles that PCB Cricket Committee meeting is scheduled for August 2, in which MD Wasim Khan will take major decisions.

“I hope Imran Khan will interfere and make sure no tainted person could get any role with Pakistan cricket team. Moin Khan, Wasim Akram and Inzamam are known as tainted persons.

They had inflicted huge damages on national cause. Why PCB is hesitating in appointing people like Abdul Qadir, who had a neat and clean past as chief selector and he can provide justice to the deserving players. Nepotism has played havoc with Pakistan cricket and already careers of a great number of youngsters were destroyed. But hopefully, the PM won’t allow more injustices with our youth,” he added.

Sarfraz said: “I think Younus Khan should be the head coach of Pakistan national team. He was brilliant player, awesome captain and knows modern-day cricket requirements.

I feel he is the best replacement for Mickey Arthur. While for Test captaincy, I strongly recommend Azhar Ali, who is the best choice, as he is scoring runs in England and has the experience to lead and his place in the Test team is secure. Babar Azam must be named as his deputy.”

He said all those, who had played with the futures of Pakistani youth and dirty role in the past and still somehow involved in the present setup, must be shown the doors. “Appointing a fragile captain will serve no purpose to PCB nor the national team. Wasim Khan must take bold decisions in the interest of Pakistan cricket. He should not hesitate to stamp out his authority. The mafia sitting in the board won’t let him work freely, unless he dictates terms and it is only possible through fearless across the board accountability.

“Pakistan cricket can’t afford any further delays in appointment of local coaches. I recommend PCB should stop searching for international coaches and support staff. Pakistan had produced a number of greats, who are more than capable of producing wonders for national team, like they did during their playing days,” he added.

Sarfraz said it baldy hurts to see Pakistan team on a constant decline. “We have brilliant youngsters, best facilities and infrastructure, but we just need to provide youth their due right while merit must hold key to selection.

“Pakistan cricket will continue to suffer unless super flops like Mickey Arthur, Grant Flower and Azhar Mehmood are shown the doors. In fact, Flower has baldy destroyed the technique of Pakistani batsmen, while same is the case with Azhar. Pakistan bowling was always our main weapon, but ever since Azhar was given role with the national team, our bowling has gone from bad to worse. I hope Imran Khan will live up to expectations and won’t allow PCB to appoint tainted persons in any capacity,” Sarfraz concluded.

Sarfraz Nawaz needs to be reprimanded by the mental health act

Why do so many of our 'former greats' get so much media airtime? Does this happen in any other country to the extent that it happens in Pakistan?

These are some highly moderate comments for Sarfraz Nawaz standards. I had to read them twice just to confirm he said them. Becuase this guy is a professional conspiracy theorist so the fact that he said so many coherent senstences without any conspiracy theories definitely shocked me.

"While for Test captaincy, I strongly recommend Azhar Ali, who is the best choice, as he is scoring runs in England"

Azhar Ali averages 25 in the County Championship...

That is what Sarfaraz meant : scoring runs ( at 25). He wanted to be succinct.

Any plan that irks Sarfaraz Nawaz has to be good
